The Strong Shall Protect the Weak
Nestled in the heart of the Whispering Woods, the small cabin stood beside a gently flowing stream, its melodious babble harmonising with the rustling of leaves in the summer breeze. Dappled orange sunlight filtered through the thick canopy of towering oak and maple trees, casting long afternoon shadows on the mossy ground. The air was rich with the earthy scent of damp soil and blooming wildflowers, mingling with the faint aroma of pine. A rustic wooden porch extended from the cabin, overlooking the serene stream where dragonflies danced above the water, and fish occasionally broke the stillness by skimming millimetrically close to the shimmering surface.
With long strides of determination, Twilight Sparkle made for the bank of the stream, the H.M.S. Smarty Pants nestled between her shoulder blades for balance. Smarty Pants herself, namesake of the galleon, was currently back in the cabin, supervising Shining Armor to make sure he did all the washing up properly.
Mummy and Daddy didn't always make Shiny do the washing up, but he was in big trouble this time. Twilight hadn't heard the whole discussion, and there were some big words that she couldn't quite wrap her head around, but she was able to get the basic gist of it: Shiny had snuck out in the night to meet up with Cadance. She didn't understand why Cadance had come all the way to the Whispering Woods just to see her stupid big brother. What was so special about him, for pony's sake? Twilight was especially upset that having come all this way, Cadance hadn't even come back to say hello to her.
So much for the coveted title of 'Greatest Foalsitter in All the History of Foalsitters'. Twilight would have to consider whether or not she would have to demote Cadance to a silver medal position. The only problem with that was, she didn't have any other foalsitters.
The train of thought departed her mind at full steam when she reached the bank of the tiny stream. Her little heart swelled as she left the forest behind. Now she was General Sparkle of the Equestrian Navy, ready to set sail for grand adventures, new lands, and maybe the odd political treaty with newly discovered civilisations. She carefully placed the small galleon in the water, watching it bob gently on the slowly undulating surface.
"Okey dokey, Cap’n Smarty Pants, weady for dooty!" she declared, saluting an unseen figure.
Just before sitting down, Twilight paused and glanced back at the cabin. Mummy was sat on the porch, reading her book and sipping at a steaming mug of tea. Every few seconds, her eyes seemed to flicker away from the book in Twilight's direction, a watchful and vigilant sentinel keeping her daughter safe. When she clocked on to the fact her daughter was watching, she gave a little wave of her hoof.
Reassured by Mummy's presence, and more crucially her permission to play, she turned back to the stream and knelt down. The cool, damp moss tickled her knees as she gave the boat a gentle push with her muzzle. It floated with a graceful serenity, catching onto the slow current and turning to point downstream. Twilight's eyes widened as a toothy grin spread across her face.
"Bwace da… uh… erm… the big sail!" she commanded. “Fool speed ah-hed!”
The slightest of breezes caught the small, tissue paper sails as the H.M.S. Smarty Pants began its voyage, bobbing merrily on the stream. Though small in reality, the ripples of water caused the galleon to bounce up and down in a manner that flooded Twilight's mind with visions of mighty ships conquering fierce storms and tidal waves. A small price to pay, she reasoned, when distant lands of dragons, treasure and new civilisations lay just beyond the horizon.
A loud croak echoed through the air. Curious, Twilight turned and spotted a friendly-looking frog perched on a vibrant green lily pad. Its shiny eyes twinkled as it stared right back at her, almost as if it was saying hello. Twilight couldn't help but giggle. With a small, gentle wave of her hoof, she offered the frog a greeting of her own. It seemed to understand her gesture, nodding its head ever so slightly before settling back onto the lily pad, content to watch her explore its watery home.
"Hey dere, Mr. Froggy,” Twilight chirped. "Did'ya wanna join us onna biiig 'venture cross da sea?"
The frog remained silent, not uttering a single ribbit in response to Twilight's wave. She decided that meant he was shy. After all, she knew from her preschool teacher, Mrs. Blossom, that many ponies were shy too. Mrs. Blossom often reminded them that everypony was unique in their own way and that these differences should be celebrated, not judged. Maybe this particular frog preferred listening rather than talking, or perhaps it was simply enjoying the peaceful evening by the river.
Twilight's attention returned to her tiny boat as it floated downstream, navigating the gentle current with determination. Just then, a dazzling dragonfly darted past, its delicate wings shimmering with iridescent hues of emerald, sapphire, and amethyst. Mesmerised by the insect's graceful flight, Twilight couldn't help but wonder if it was more than just a common dragonfly.
Her mind buzzed, flickering with the notion that the dragonfly was a magical creature in disguise, its iridescent wings not just for show but imbued with hidden powers. Perhaps it could cast spells with a flick of its wings, or had the ability to whisper secrets of the forest to those who listened closely. Maybe it was a real dragon, just… a really, really little one.
Lost in daydreams, Twilight was dragged back to reality as a splash shattered the tranquillity. Startled, she glanced up just in time to witness a sleek fish leap from the water, its silvery scales catching the sunlight as it arced gracefully through the air. Then as quickly as it had appeared, and with a loud PLUNK, it vanished back into the water.
Ripples cascaded outwards from the spot where the fish had landed, combining with the current and growing in strength. With Twilight’s attention still lingering on the flight of the little fishie, she was oblivious to the combination of forces that grew into a small wave that struck her beloved H.M.S. Smarty Pants with catastrophic force.
In an instant, the boat that had bravely carried her downstream was overturned by the wave, leaving Twilight momentarily stunned. She watched helplessly as her boat bobbed upside down in the water, its mast dipping beneath the surface. With a squeak, Twilight waded into the shallow water, rescuing her overturned boat and setting it upright again. She gasped as the tiny little sails fell limp, tearing away from the mast as the tissue paper dissolved.
"No! No no, Cap’n Smarty Pants, we gone an lost da big sail…" Twilight whimpered, blinking away the traces of tears that were trying to force their way into the corners of her eyes.
She carefully examined the rest of her small wooden ship. Despite the forceful wave that had overturned it, she was relieved to find that, aside from the damage to the sail, the boat appeared to be mostly unscathed. Running her hoof along the smooth wood of the hull, Twilight inspected for any cracks or leaks, just like Shining Armor had taught her. To her relief, there were none.And despite the lack of a sail, the mast stood tall and sturdy as it ever had.
“S’okay, Cap’n," she murmured, more to reassure herself than the toy. "S’gonna be all fine. We’s gonna get you all better, an den you’s gonna be fightin’ fit for dooty in no time. And den… den we’s gonna get your ship all mended-ed for you, ready for when you’s is back an ready to sail again."
So deeply engrossed was Twilight in thought about how to go about mending the sail, that she completely missed the shadow that had slowly begun to engulf her. When she did notice it, she reacted purely on instinct, squeaking in surprise and turning around. She looked up to see her older brother, Shining Armor, standing nearby. His usually composed expression looked down at her, concern evident in the furrow of his brow..
"Hey, Twily," he said, sitting down to rest on his haunches. "What happened to the boat?"
Twilight puffed out her chest. "Me ‘n Cap’n Smarty Pants, we was on this great big 'venture! But dis big meanie fish almost sanked us, and da sail got all broked."
“The sail huh? Let’s see, I’m sure we can fix it.”
With a tilt of her head, Twilight looked up at Shining and made a big show of narrowing her eyes. “Ain’t you sposed to be doing da dishes?”
Shining Armor laughed, reaching over to tousle his sister’s mane. “All done, Twily. I served my time, and I okayed coming out here with Smarty Pants. She's drying them for me. Now, hold it up, let me see.”
Twilight raised an eyebrow, but otherwise obliged. “I fink essept from da sail getting all broked, iss all okay.”
"Well if the rest of the ship is fine, then all we gotta do is fix you up with a new sail. That should be pretty easy."
“Oh I dunno,” Twilight mused, leaning her head right up to the ship to examine it closely. “I fink dis gonna be a big job, we need'a find da perfect sail for a gallee… gall… for a boat as amazin' as dis one.”
Scratching his chin as he pursed his lips, Shining Armor glanced around the area, eyes scanning the nearby trees. Quickly he spotted it: a large, broad leaf on a maple tree not far away. He trotted over to it, and with a gentle tug, he carefully plucked the leaf from its branch. Making sure not to damage its delicate edges, he held it carefully aloft in his magical aura, and walked back over to where Twilight was still inspecting the masts. Shining had to suppress a chuckle when he saw that Twilight was so deep in thought, the tip of her tongue had poked out from one side of her mouth.
"How about this for a new sail?" Shining Armor offered, holding the leaf out for Twilight to examine.
Her eyes lit up. "Dat’s perfect, Shiny!"
Together, Twilight and Shining Armor worked tenderly to fashion the large maple leaf into a makeshift sail for H.M.S. Smarty Pants. They secured the leaf to the mast using long blades of grass, weaving them around the leaf's stem and tying them securely. The result looked a little on the silly side, but as their Dad would often say, ‘it isn’t silly if it works’.
"It might not be as neat as the tissue paper sail," Shining remarked with a grin. "But I think it'll do the trick!"
With the new sail securely in place, they stepped back to admire their handiwork. The leaf's deep green colour contrasted beautifully against the wooden hull of the boat, giving it a rustic charm. Vague images flooded through Twilight’s head, the contrast of nature and hoof-made craft giving Twilight recollections of the cover art of some of the fantasy books Shining Armor liked to read.
"Ready to set sail again, Twily?" Shining teased, giving his sister a salute.
Twilight giggled. "Aye, aye, Firse Mate Shiny! Onwards, on a 'nuvver 'venture to were da wind takes us!"
"So I'm the first mate, huh? And you said Smarty Pants is the captain? So who're you, Twily, what’s your job on the ship?"
"I'm da Jennawal, silly Shiny!"
With a small chuckle, Shining Armor leant back, giving his chin another thoughtful scratch. "You know what, Twily? I think a General like you needs a proper hat. Wait right here!"
He dashed back to the cabin, disappearing briefly before returning with a piece of paper held in his magic. He settled down beside Twilight, his expression a mix of concentration and anticipation, as he began folding the paper with practised ease. Twilight watched with wide eyes. With each precise fold and crease, Shining Armor's hooves moved skillfully, transforming the flat sheet of paper into a small, intricate shape. Within moments, he revealed his handiwork: a perfect little paper hat, complete with a pointed top and a neatly folded brim.
"There you go, General Sparkle," he said with a proud smile, placing the hat gently on Twilight's head.
Twilight giggled, adjusting her new headwear. "Fank'oo, Shiny! Now, less set sail for a 'venture!"
They sat side by side, Twilight in her paper hat and Shining Armor with a contented smile, watching as H.M.S. Smarty Pants gracefully sailed downstream with its new leaf sail catching the gentle breeze. The sunlight danced on the water's surface, casting shimmering reflections around them. For a while, they were just a brother and sister, lost in their own world of make-believe, where troubles and punishments were far away, and the only thing that mattered was the adventure unfolding before them.
"Cap’n Smarty Pants, less set a course for da island of da dwagons!" Twilight commanded, pointing downstream with a dramatic flourish.
"Aye aye, General Sparkle!" Shining Armor replied, saluting sharply as he pitched his voice upwards in an awful impression of a young filly.
They laughed and let their imaginations run wild, weaving tales of daring adventures for H.M.S. Smarty Pants as it sailed down the stream. Twilight and Shining Armor created a fantastical world where their ship navigated treacherous waters teeming with sea monsters, discovered ancient, sunken treasure troves, and (at Twilight’s insistence) negotiated peace treaties with enigmatic underwater kingdoms. Each story they spun was more elaborate and thrilling than the last, their voices filling with excitement and wonder.
Every now and then, Twilight Velvet would glance up from her book at her two children, watching them without any attempt to disguise the width of her grin.
Throughout their play, Twilight found herself immersed in the moment. Any earlier frustrations with Cadance had long since faded into the background, overshadowed by the joy of sharing this special time with her brother. Together, they laughed at their own creativity, and marvelled at the limitless possibilities their imaginations conjured.
As the sun began its descent, painting the Whispering Woods with a warm orange hue and casting long shadows over the stream, Twilight became aware of the passing time. The air grew cooler, hinting at the approaching dusk. She glanced at Shining Armor, a bittersweet pang of reluctance occasionally tugging at her heart. The same one that bites at every child at play, who knows that bedtime is fast approaching.
"Hey, Shining," their father's voice called out from somewhere behind the cabin. "We need some wood for the fire, come help me chop these logs."
Twilight sighed, but smiled up at Shining Armor. "Guess we’s just gonna hav'ta finish our 'venture tomorrow, Shiny."
"Aye aye, General Sparkle," Shining Armor said with a grin and one last salute. "Tomorrow, we conquer the dastardly dragons of Dumathar’s Deephold."
Dismissed from his naval duties, Shining Armor set off back towards the cabin. As the sun dipped lower still, immersing the Whispering Woods in shades of gold, Twilight sat by the water's edge. Her eyes were captivated by the gentle flow of the stream, as she came down from the emotional highs of her playtime with Shining Armor. The H.M.S. Smarty Pants floated peacefully on the water, its leaf sail catching the last rays of sunlight.
A gentle rustling from across the water drew Twilight’s attention.
There were three of them. A larger rabbit, maybe a mummy as well, and two smaller ones that scampered playfully behind her. They hopped along the water's edge, their fluffy little tails bobbing as they nibbled on tender green shoots bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun.
Their fur was a soft blend of browns and greys, shimmering in the fading sunlight. Twilight admired their twitching noses and delicate, nimble movements as they hopped and scurried about, searching through the long grass as they sought further portions of their evening meal.
The larger bunny, with its ears alert and sensitive, paused in its foraging as if sensing Twilight's presence across the stream. Twilight held her breath, her heart beating softly in her chest as she watched in fascination. For a fleeting instant, their eyes met across the gentle flow of the stream.
Not wanting to disturb the delicate harmony of the moment, Twilight remained perfectly still, her presence a quiet observer in the peaceful tableau. Here, by the babbling stream and beneath the canopy of the forest, was the unfolding of a memory that Twilight couldn’t wait to tell the other foals in her preschool about. When the larger bunny returned to its gentle grazing and the others continued their exploration, Twilight couldn't help but smile softly to herself.
Until a flicker of movement drew her eye, in the bushes behind the bunnies.
At first, Twilight thought it might be a playful breeze stirring the leaves, but then she saw it. Its russet fur blended perfectly with the earthy tones of the forest floor, and its sharp, curious eyes scanned the surroundings with calculated precision. As the muscles in its face twitched, she could make out the outlines of sharp teeth, framed by the blackness of its lips. The long snout hung there, apparently visible only to Twilight. But if it was even remotely aware of her presence, it didn't respond to her. Its attention was focused solely on the bunnies.
With eyes welling with tears, Twilight felt completely helpless as she watched the fox. A quick glance back at Mummy showed she was engrossed in her book and didn’t appear to have noticed the creature, and even if she wasn’t, she was too far away to be of any help. The fox would be upon its prey before Mummy could even get off the porch. Twilight was desperate to call out to the bunnies, to tell them to run for their lives as fast as their little legs could carry them. She wanted to scream, but she could only manage a whisper.
"No, no no no… pwease don't hurt them, Mr. Fox. They dint do nuffin' wrong."
A cold chill ran along her spine. Except, something was different about it. In the dead of the night, when she was sure there was a monster in her closet or under her bed, and Daddy had to come chase them away, Twilight had felt it run down her spine. It accompanied the hammering of her heart, and the dull ache in her stomach.
This chill, however, ran up her spine. And with it, it brought a sense of calm. Previously agitated by the sinister presence of the fox, her heart seemed to settle in her chest. Around her, the world slowed down, brought into clarity with a sharp focus that flooded Twilight’s every sense. She became aware of every twitch of each bunny whisker. The wiggle of their snouts, and the ruffle of their tails. The fox, she could sense the increased salivation in anticipation of the meal to come. As it tilted its ears backwards, she could feel the tension building in the muscles of its legs as it readied itself to pounce.
‘No,’ Twilight thought, as every sense and awareness combined to fuel a tingling sensation that radiated out from her horn. ‘It ain’t fair nor right. Stoopid fox, how bout you pick on a aminal your own size, see how you like it.’
She blinked.
The tingling sensation that had enveloped her horn moments ago now faded, leaving her stunned and breathless. Before her stood the trio of bunnies. Except, they weren't little bunnies any more. They were gigantic bunnies, each one towering over the underbrush, and dwarfing even the largest animals she had ever seen in any woodlands or zoo.
They were larger than Mummy, or Daddy, and perhaps even larger than both Mummy and Daddy put together.
Although of any creature around to witness the sudden transformation, none had been caught more off-guard than the fox. Predatory instincts were swiftly overtaken by fear. With wide eyes and a startled yelp of terror, the fox abruptly abandoned its hunt. Its sleek form turned tail in a frantic dash, disappearing swiftly into the safety of the woods. The sound of its panicked cries echoed briefly before fading into the serene silence of the Whispering Woods.
Twilight grinned in amazement as she watched the giant bunnies continue to graze peacefully, seemingly unfazed by their dramatic increase in size. They nibbled on tender shoots and grass with the same casual demeanour as before, as if they hadn't noticed the remarkable transformation that had just occurred. If anything, the only reaction they seemed to show was a slight confusion that the stalks of grass they’d been feeding on had unexpectedly become much smaller.
About as quickly as they had appeared, the three bunnies seemed to lose interest in the immediate area and decided to move on to explore somewhere new. The mummy bunny, now towering over the surroundings, took the lead with confident hops, her large offspring following closely behind.
Watching with a mixture of awe and amusement, Twilight waved goodbye to the bunnies as the massive creatures made their way back into the Whispering Woods. The forest floor trembled slightly with each powerful leap of the bunnies, their sheer size making even the simplest movements seem monumental. However, as the last bunny turned to follow its family, its colossal form nearly uprooted a small tree with a mighty hop. The branches creaked and swayed noisily, joining the fading cacophony of sound as the thumps of giant bunny hops grew slowly more distant, disappearing further and further away into the forest.
With the wide grin still lingering on her muzzle, Twilight carefully retrieved H.M.S. Smarty Pants, balancing it securely on her back. The makeshift leaf sail fluttered lightly in the breeze as she trotted excitedly back towards the cabin, and she had to stop halfway to adjust the little paper hat still perched on her head. It had almost blown off in a small gust, and while Twilight didn't want to lose it, she was eager to recount what had just happened. She wasn’t sure why the bunnies had gotten so big, or why she’d felt so funny right before it happened, but Mummy and Daddy would probably be able to explain.
Approaching the porch, Twilight saw Mummy still seated comfortably, absorbed in her book as the warm hues of the setting sun bathed the surroundings in a serene glow. Hopping up onto planks that let out a soft creak under her hooves, Twilight couldn't contain her enthusiasm.
"Mummy!" she exclaimed. “Did'ya see the giant bunnies!”
Setting her book aside, she smiled warmly at her daughter. "Giant bunnies, you say? No, I didn't see them," Mummy replied, playing along with Twilight's excitement with a wide grin. "Tell you what, sweetheart. It’s starting to get cold out. So, let’s head inside, and you can tell me all about them!"
