I saw you come out of a dollar store late last year, you were the same shade as lavender haze the clouds take before a storm, before shifting to a sickly bruise yellow.
You had a bulging plastic sack in one hand and your phone glowing under your chin in the other. You were in those adorable starry PJ's. I didn’t even know they made for teens. You had these two sizes too big flip flops that kept falling off you.
You met my eyes as I stepped out from the alley way between the strip mall and the dumpsters. I know I must’ve looked (and smelt) rough. I had been trying to find a free meal when I found you. And your already paid-for sack of instant noodles.
You stood so still I thought for a second that I may have actually become a ghost before you took half a step back, keeping your eyes on me, then another step, before bursting out into a run. Slides, flip flopping away.
I closed the gap quickly and grabbed your shoulder and yanked you back, making you trip over your shoes. One flew up so fast it hit me in the chin. I still have a scar from it making bite into my lip.
I snatched your food and ran away. I could hear you yelling for help but this was on the border of Griffonstone. The only way people start running is if you yelled “Cops!” And it's usually away from you. I remember being so excited because you had all my favorites picked out, it was like Hearth's Warming had come in July.
You were my first. I had never stolen directly like that before. And still over a year later, I remember you. Stealing from you gave me the confidence to keep surviving. And steal more. But mostly survive.
There was this moment, when your shoe hit my chin, and I was man-handling your wrist, it was only for a second but I felt something. And I think you felt it too. Or maybe it's my guilt trying to make sense of itself.
If I wasn’t so hungry (and also committing a crime) I think I would’ve asked your name. But it turns out I didn’t need to, because the receipt had your name on it.
I tried going back to that store and waiting for you, but I never saw you again. Probably because of the hoodwinking. My bad. It closed down last week.
So, Twilight, if you wanna meet up, or just, get your money’s-instant-noodles-worth back, get back to me.

I saw you last week outside my bus window, during that rainstorm. You were crouched in that same alleyway again, but I saw you from the other direction. Between 5th and 6th, looking from that antique store.
I guess we were both too lonely to sleep, or maybe I need to stop drinking caffeine so close to bed. Maybe you do too.
At first, I thought you were scrounging around for loose change or maybe some potable water, and had half a mind to call the police, or at least my brother on you.
But then, I saw you reaching out to the tiniest, mangy, and most angry kitten ever.
Cats fur only stands up because of the arrector pili muscles at the hair follicle base, and I’m pretty sure that little guy was using all his muscles to yell at you. He was a little puff ball, sea urchin, creature rolled up into a tiny kitten body.
And seeing you on your hands and knees, soaked to the bone, muddy, and getting pelted with rain, just to make kissy noises to a kitten and (hopefully) get it out of the rain? I think I can excuse a couple dollars worth of instant noodles.
But if you really want to make it up to me, then message me a picture of you and the kitten both dry and happy. Preferably, both of you smelling less like garbage.
I remember looking from across the street, even when inside a bus clouded by my breath, I could see one of those mass-print books peek out from your jacket. Inevitably ruined and soaked from the rain, but well-loved if the tape and color coded bookmarks told its own story.
I squinted my eyes until I got a headache from trying to read the title. A.K Yearling. My favorite. I wanted to badger you with questions, who's your favorite character? Book? Worst Character arc? My bus lurched forward before I could even consider it.
I can’t stop thinking about you. I wonder where you go to school. If you go to school. Do you have a family? Parents? I wondered if you had someone who also read Daring Do with you. I wondered if you would want to read my annotated copy instead.
I had a dream about us meeting again the other night.
We were in a home I had never seen before, more of a collage of memories and pinterest boards. It was like swallowing nostalgia for a place you’ve never been.
You said something I can’t recall, only that I enjoyed it, and I blushed red like sunlight through skin.
It was like you stumbled into my life, told me to come find you, but then left me mapless and terribly awake.
Also, when you robbed me, did you whinny and try to buck at me? What was up with that?
