Where every story starts.
"Sweetie, breakfast is ready, come down to eat while it's hot" I grumble to myself, why do I have to wake up early, I don't have school or work, at least for now.
"I'm coming" I reluctantly leave the comfort of my bed and walk up to the bathroom, when I look in the mirror, I see the same boring-looking unicorn stallion I see every morning, a light blue coat and a midnight blue mane with a black strip and emerald green eyes, then I proceed with the morning stuff, taking a bath, brushing my teeth and doing what I need to do in the toilet. As soon as I start to go down the stairs I'm hit with the marvelous smell of haybacons and eggs.
When I enter the kitchen, I see my "mom" cooking our meal, a light brown earth pony with a golden mane, and amber orbs looking at me with a light smile on her face.
"Good morning sleepy head," she says with a sweet voice looking back at the stove.
"Morning and it's not even 8 AM," I say a little annoyed, it's too early for this.
"Hey, come on, it's not that early!" She smiles, "Besides, it's a beautiful day outside, why don't you go out a little? It will be good for you"
"Meh, I'm not in the mood, besides, what would I do out there?" I ask while eating my food.
"Well... you could try to meet somepony?" Not this again...
"Please don't start with this again" I scowl at her comment.
"Please, you know you need to-" Before she could finish, I brought my hoof down to the table, to make a little noise, she got the memo.
"Well, at least have thought about what will you do next?"
"I don't know... maybe I will apply to some college, maybe study magic theory? Or whatever" She looks at me with little worry.
"Why don't you try the Celestia School for Unicorns?" I look at her with a confused look.
"You know we can't pay for that school, besides, I'm awful with my magic, I wouldn't even get past the entry exam"
"But you read so many books about magic, you must know something to impress them!"
"Just because I read a lot about magic doesn't mean I know how to cast it, sure, I know most if not all magic that is in the books, but what good it does if I can't cast them?" I say angry at myself, why do I have to be the worst magic caster in history?
"Sorry that I brought that up," she says sadly, her ears on the back of her head, water starting to form in her eyes.
"It's fine, I don't care about it anyway" I lied, I do care about it, but I can't make her suffer more than she already does.
"How else will you apply to be a guard then?" I almost choke on my juice after she says that.
“That was my dream when I was 8, I grew past that, I'm 16 now, and I know how hard it is to be a guard, not sure I want that anymore."
Well, I still want to be a guard deep down, but, if you know you can't succeed why even try?
"But you would look so handsome in one of those golden armors." She says with a glee.
"Ugh, I wouldn't try for the solar guard anyway, the lunar guard was my objective" That's still true, I prefer the night over the day, and since Princess Luna came back, the Lunar Guard became bigger and stronger, probably even stronger than the solar one
"Wait, what day is today?" I ask her "Hm? It's the 12th of December silly" Oh shit, I need to return that book to the library.
"Oh no, I gotta go, you got your wish, I will need to go out" She smiles at that.
"See you later sweetie!" She says with a smile waving at me. "See you later Goldy," I say to her trotting in the direction of Canterlot Library.
As I reach for the door, somepony beats me to it, a light yellow unicorn mare with a tri-color mane, red and two tones of purple, one lighter than the other, Moon Dancer I believe was her name, she was a senior in my school when I was a freshman, she is one of the most intelligent ponies I have ever seen, second only to Twilight Sparkle, the personal student of Celestia, we used to talk a little, she is nice, a little awkward but nice.
“Oh, hey Moon Dancer, long time no see!” I say with little enthusiasm.
The mare doesn’t even look up her book and just says in a monotonous voice “Hey” and starts walking off.
“Uh, Moon Dancer, are you alright?” The mare finally decides to look in my direction, she looks surprised.
“Oh, Crescent Dusk, long time no see” At least she remembers my name.
“Hey, you know it’s just Dusk for you” I take a look at the book she is holding, an advanced tome of ancient magic, outdated but still an interesting read.
“Studying for something in particular?” I ask her.
“Oh, not really, just thought that this book looked interesting” Wait, Moon Dancer, isn’t studying anymore? Something weird happened.
“What? Did you already finish college or something?”
“I didn’t go to college Dusk” What the hay, she used to always say that she would enter the School for Gifted Unicorns, what happened?
“Wait? Didn’t you apply for Celestia’s School?” Her face turns into a sad one, ears drooping and eyes focusing on the ground.
“I... I didn’t pass the entry exam” She says almost in a whisper.
“How? You were the top 2 student from our school, this isn’t possible!” I say with genuine surprise.
“Magic, that’s what kept me from entering, sure I know a lot about magic, but I'm slightly above average at spell casting, that’s not what they were looking for” She sighs and looks back at me.
“Well, it was nice meeting you Dusk, we should meet up for some study session later, see you” She then waves at me and starts walking away,
“See you” Wow, if even Moon Dancer wasn’t able to pass that test, what could I even do there?
As I reach the return table the librarian notices me.
“Hey Dusk, here to check out the magic and tricks for self-defense vol.3?” She says with a smile.
“Hello, Dusty!” I put the book on the counter “And yes, that’s what I’m here for, the book is due today and I already finished it anyway”
“Did you enjoy it?” She asks while preparing all the stuff for the checkout.
“Well, while not as good as the other two volumes, it had some interesting theories about shield magic, I just hoped I would be able to cast them,” I say a little saddened by the statement.
“I’m sorry to hear that, I wish I could help, but I'm just an old earth pony mare,” She says with a concerned look.
“Anyway, everything is all set, you can get another book now if you want” A happy smile on her face again.
“Thanks, but I think I’m going to pass, need to do some other stuff” I waved her goodbye “See you later Dusty”
“See ya Dusk” She waves back.
Now outside the library, I'm alone with my thoughts, too early to go home, I think I'm just going to take a stroll at the local park.
The park is beautiful this morning, even in early winter most of the flowers are still there, decorating the park with a rainbow of colors, the grass is a beautiful green, not many ponies around though, I then sit on a bench near a lake.
Lots of stuff is plaguing my mind, what can I even do? Too poor for a good education, too stupid for a good scholarship, and awful with magic for Celestia’s school.
While I was lost in my mind, I failed to notice the Pegasi mare who just approached me, she cleared her throat to get my attention, which worked.
“You are Crescent Dusk, right?” She formally asks me.
“Yeah,” I simply respond.
“There is a letter for you”
“A letter? From who?” I have never received any letter in my whole life.
“We don’t have the sender’s name or an address” OK, now this sends me the chills, who knows my name and would need to send a letter like this?
I take the letter on my magic and give it a puzzled look.
“Have a nice day” The mare says to me, I just respond with “You too”
After some careful looks and some prodding, I decided to open the letter.
It’s a simple invitation, a little too fancy for my taste, it reads.
Congratulations on getting into Celestia’s School for Gifted Unicorns, as the current head of the board of directors I come in this letter to ask you to get in contact with us as fast as you can so we can set up all the paperwork, we expect only the best coming from you Crescent Dusk.
-Sincerely, head director of the CSCGU, Ink Quill.
What?
Author's Note
Since my brain decided to go blank for the next chapter of "My new life in equestria" I decided to create another story, something more serious, I will try my best to do things I would never do with my other story, but this one won't be updated as fast as the other one, I want this to be the best as it can be.
As I sit there looking at the letter, I can’t stop asking how. How did I get into the most prestigious school in Equestria without paying or taking the test? Something isn’t right here.
Well, the only way to get to the bottom of this is to talk with this Ink Quill Pony. It's still early afternoon, and the school is close by.
After a 15-minute walk, I got there, and what a sight it was. The school is HUGE. The colors, being mainly purple and pink, aren't my thing, but hey, not everything is perfect. A lot of unicorns are talking around the entrance of the school. It's lunch break, I assume. Either way, it's not my problem.
Reaching up to the front door an older stallion with a light blue coat and a gray mane probably because of old age, his eyes look tired with pretty big bags under it, he was approaching me with a tired gaze.
“School grounds are only for students and parents' kid” His voice was deep and raspy, by the looks of it, it was a side effect of too many pipes.
“Oh, sorry sir?” I looked at him expecting him to say his name, but he took a while to catch the hint.
“Ashen, professor Ashen” He responded after a while.
“Crescent Dusk, I’m here because I received a letter about getting into the school, I wanted to talk with the head director Ink Quill about it” He looks shocked by the news.
“That’s weird, a letter of admission in December?” Now that he says that, it does look weird.
“Well, I’m not sure myself, that’s why I came here”
“Alright, follow me, I will lead you to her office”
After a couple of minutes, we reach a fancy-looking door, it has a small window and golden decorations all around, it has a small golden plate with Head Director engraved on it, fancy.
The professor then proceeds to knock twice on the door, but the knocks are weak, almost like he fears that he will break the door while doing so.
After a couple of minutes, a calm but also quite menacing voice comes from inside.
“Who is it?” From the tone, the owner of the voice doesn’t look all that pleased.
“It’s Ashen, a kid was looking for you at the entrance,” The teacher says in a lower tone.
“I’m busy, tell them to come later” So much for that, I guess that I will come back later.
“It’s that Dusk kid” After a brief pause the door slowly opens with a golden color, almost the same as Celestia’s herself.
“Come in” The voice is a little calmer, almost motherly in its tone, I need to be careful about what I say to this pony.
The teacher simply nods me to enter with his head, then he closes the door with a smoky grey aura, which fits his name though.
As I enter the office proper, I can see how fancy it is from the inside, lots of thick tomes and scrolls all around the room, all organized to a tea.
I also see a middle-aged mare sitting on the desk on the other side of the room, she has a lemon coat with a fiery orange mane which has some grey meshes, if I would put an age to her, I would say early 50s or late 40s, I better be on my best behavior.
“Ah, it is indeed you Crescent Dusk, please, sit down,” she says with a warm voice, this mare can fake her emotions quite well.
After I sit down, she offers me some tea, I politely decline, can’t handle the taste of tea, coffee was always my choice.
“Hello ma'am, I was here to-” She interrupts me out of nowhere.
“Oh please, no need for all that formality, call me Ink dear”
“Um, well, as I was saying Miss Ink, around an hour earlier I got a letter saying that I got into the school, but I never applied or took any tests, how can this be possible?” I pass the letter to her as I say that.
“Oh that, well, your case is a bit different” She then proceeds to take one of the thickest books out of them all and put it on the table.
“Aha, here it is!” She says a little too excited in my opinion.
“You see, around two weeks ago, a mare with a cloak came here to enlist you in the school, saying that you deserve the best and that this is to make up for something she did” She then closes the book.
“She never said what though... got me a bit curious I'm not going to lie” She chuckles a bit with that comment, I don’t pay attention, the only thing that is in my mind right now is this mysterious mare, who and why she did this?
“Did she leave a name or an address?” I ask in a dead tone.
“Um, no, she said that she wanted to stay anonymous, which is weird since I assumed she was your mother”
“I have no mother”
“Excuse me? I couldn’t hear that”
“I HAVE NO MOTHER” I shout, my anger just exploded.
“IF SHE DARES TO CALL ME MY MOTHER, SHE CAN FORGET THAT”
Without thinking my horn starts to glow, and I can also feel a warm sensation around my head.
“SHE NEVER CARED TO VISIT ME, OR EVEN SEND ME A LETTER TO ASK IF I WAS DOING WELL” Ink Quill is looking a bit worried now, I don’t know if it is because of my horn or my shouting.
“YOU KNOW WHAT, KEEP THAT FUCKING TUITION, SHE CAN SHOVE IT UP HER ASS IF SHE WANTS TO” I’m not the one to use this type of words, but right now I can only feel anger and resentment.
I start to walk away, but then Ink Quill gets my attention.
“What will I do with the bits she gave me? The school has a no refund policy” She asks me, more as a courtesy than out of worry.
“I don’t care, you can keep it, it’s not my money anyway” I’m feeling a bit calmer now, my horn snuffed out and I no longer feel any heat in my head.
Then I proceeded to leave her office, somehow my magic went haywire, and shut the door way too hard, the only thing I hear is the glass on the door cracking, well that happened.
I then take look around, lots of students are looking at me, and that teacher from before looks at me and nods with respect, I just leave the school after that, I just want to go home after this...
A few minutes later I get home, and Goldy as always greets me with a warm smile, I just get into the living room and lay down, I know that I was angry before, but now, I only feel sadness.
“What happened, sweetie? You look like you could use a hug” I barely leave her with enough time to complete the sentence, I tackle her and start crying on her chest”
“Why didn’t she care? Why is she doing this now? Why not before?” Goldy just uses her hoof to caress my mane cooing loving words in my ears.
“It’s all going to be all right dear, no need to worry now, I’m here” After a couple of minutes I managed to calm down.
“Thanks, Goldy, I needed that”
“Do you want to talk about it?” she asks with concern all over her face.
“Not right now...” I really don’t want to think about it for a while, to be honest, I just want to forget that today happened.
“Oh yeah, I almost forgot to tell you, Princess Luna is doing a parade in an hour if you want, we can go watch it! I know how much you love her” she says smiling.
“I would like that” I can’t do anything but smile at her, she brings the best out of everypony.
After a while we reach the central road of Canterlot, not a lot of ponies around, Luna isn’t the most popular princess, somehow.
And here she was, the younger of the celestial sisters walking down the road, only accompanied by two guards, which is weird, they usually walk around with at least four.
Right as she gets past where both me and Goldy are standing I hear a weird sound just a little behind, some random unicorn is charging up some spell, and from the looks on his face, it won’t be a good one.
My body moved on its own, I galloped following the princess of the night, as the spell left the caster horn, I jumped in its way, somehow managing to create a shield in front of me, the problem was, I was airborne, the impact of the magic on my weak shield makes it explode sending me flying in the direction of the princess, she looks back at me with her horn already charged, but she didn’t have time to cast magic, and just caught me with her body and wings.
“GUARDS, FIND THE FOOL WHO DARED TO TRY AND HURT ME” she shouts with a powerful booming voice, then she looks at me.
“Are you alright young one? Did you get hurt?” Uh oh, can’t talk, too embarrassed, to think.
“Uh, I, um” I stammer not sure what to say.
“OH, MY CELESTIA, CRESCENT WHY DID YOU DO THAT?” Goldy comes rushing with concern all over her face.
“I’m fine Goldy, just a little tired, I was never able to cast a shield magic, never thought I would be able to do so,” I say a bit proud of myself.
“Young colt, if you think that you will not be punished by this think twice! You almost gave me a heart attack” she says a little winded.
“Sorry,” I say while looking down.
“I would appreciate it if you reconsider that decision miss,” Princess Luna says, I almost forgot she was here.
“PRINCESS LUNA, I’m sorry that, I don’t know what happened, he just started galloping and...” The princess raises her hoof to silence her ramblings.
“And he saved me from a mild burn, while I do agree with her that this was a tad bit dangerous of you, it was also quite heroic, yes, the spell would be more a nuisance than a danger to myself but it’s the thought that counts” She then thinks a bit.
“Say, do you have anything important tomorrow at dusk young one?” She asks me, wait, she is asking ME?
“Um, no your Highness, I’m free at the time,” I say uncertain of myself.
“Perfect, please, tomorrow at dusk go to the castle and ask the entrance guards to see me, I will let them know of your visit...?” Oh, right I never said my name.
“Crescent, Crescent Dusk your Highness,” I say with a slight bow.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you Crescent, well, see you tomorrow at dusk”
She then looks around for her guards and starts to talk with one.
What in Tartarus just happened?
