Sarah Declynn: Equestrian Detective | Book - 1
Chapter 1 - The Beginning of it All
Load Full StoryNext Chapter'Today is the day that I finally get to spend some quality time with my friends!' I thought before I heard an all too familiar, unpleasant thump on my desk. I looked up from what I was doing only to see Charles, my best friend since kindergarten, standing in front of my desk with his signature smirk. “What’re you smiling at?” I say rhetorically, rolling my eyes.
He chuckles and sits down in one of the corner chairs just a few feet from my desk. “I just find it funny that after all this hype and all this hard work, they send you another case!” He says, chuckling loudly. I just let my head fall on my desk, letting out a slow, loud, exasperated groan.
“Best be getting to it, Sarah!” He said, getting up from his rather comfortable position.
“I guess you’re right, Charles.” I say as I turn the case folder towards me, only to see a picture in the bottom right corner of the folder depicting a slim, caucasian white female; split apart from the top of the abdomen, down. “Jane Doe, with a missing half, huh?” I said, putting my glasses on.
“How’s the ‘Incredible Declynn’ going to solve this one?” he says while crossing his arms, sarcasm smeared on his face.
Ignoring him, I grab my car keys on the left side of the desk. “Come on, we should go search for anything that might lead us to the unsub.” I say, walking past him only to hear a light scoff-like chuckle.
Once we got to the scene, the commanding officer walked towards us with an unnerving scowl. “So,” He said. “They decided to call the ‘special girl’ in.” He spat with annoyance.
Charles looked over to me, rolled his eyes and looked straight at the officer with a grin.“This ‘Special Girl’ has solved over four-thousand seven hundred-thirty-eight cases that your force couldn’t!” He exclaimed. “So if you want to complain about her, you’re better off going back to your boss and telling him exactly why you couldn’t solve this case!” He said, eyes locked on the officer, his face inches away from him.
The commanding officer then took a step back, scoffed, and walked away. “What is it with him? Why does he hate me so much?” I said as I got out of the car along with Charles.
Charles looked at me and sighed. “I honestly have no clue! He’s always hated the Declynn family.” He stated, patting me on the shoulder.
I scoffed. “You don’t think it has to do with my powers, do you?” I ask, walking towards the crime scene. He smiled, shaking his head.
An officer of N.C.S.O.U (National Crime Scene Operations Unit) came over, shook our hands, and took us over to the scene. I looked over the bush that we stopped at only to see a mangled mess of the bottom of the torso, her eyes still in shock. I could tell just by looking at the mess that the death was near, if not completely immediate.
“Jesus.” Whispers Charles, disgusted at the sight.
I lean down, touching the body and closed my eyes, activating my power. Vivid visions rip into my brain as if they are my own. They pulse and flow into my head, in my own memories. A massive, un-tamable migraine occurs as my powers complete its task. Then as if a blaze turns into an inferno, they burn and sear themselves into my mind, I felt as though I was being held down and branded in my head.
I fall, my body numb and convulsing, my eyes roll back, as my brain reads and processes all the information I just absorbed. After what feels like an hour, but has been only mere seconds, my body finally regains its feeling and the convulsing stops almost as quickly as it started.
“My god, Sarah! Are you okay?!” Charles exclaimed as he ran over to my cripple-looking form.
“Y...Yes...I’m fine.” I choked, as I attempted to lift myself up, only to weakly stumble back onto the ground.
“Need help there?” Charles says to lighten the mood while holding out his hand.
I smile and nod, grabbing his hand and lifting myself back up. After a few seconds of stumbling, my balance is restored and I’m able to walk on my own. “Okay.” I breathed. “We should get back to my office so we can analyze what I saw, and how to find the unsub.” I say, giving Charles my keys. “You drive, my head hurts too much.” I said, head in my hands.
~(15 minutes later; in the car)~
We've been on the road for little bit, then all of the sudden, a strange energy arose; causing me to shiver a bit. The pulsing from the migraine throbbed with pain as we drove, it got worse as we hit bumps or potholes. I groaned as we hit a dirt road filled with small rocks making the car bump around a bit. The car rocking and the bumps started to hurt my head as my vision started to slowly blur. The burning came back, blurring my vision more and more as the intensity grew. I grab my head only for me to quickly realize that doing so caused me to get dizzy and faint back into my seat.
I was floating in a black endless void for what seemed like eternity before a vision started to appear. This vision was different from the ones I get from touching corpses. This vision didn’t burn, but it tingled. All of a sudden I was at a Medical Bay looking over a body with a confused look.
It was the day I got my powers, the day I got put in the investigator position by the New World Government. I was putting a body on a Scanner Rail; a device that reads and processes the memories of the deceased and displays them on a small-ish screen. I walked over to turn on the scanner but, for some reason, still unbeknownst to me, I had a hold of the body’s shoulder. The machine started to whir and do its thing. But as it got to my hand, the radiation and void energy somehow grasped my hand and flowed through me like a tornado. All of a sudden I could see the victim’s memories and what happened to them. I screamed and turned off the machine. I looked at my scorched hand, a red and tight almost perfect circular burn scar was all that remained from the machine’s physical damage. Mentally, however, I had another type of scar, one that will be etched into my brain for an eternity. The same burning feeling soon took place and I crumpled on the ground and I fainted.
A doctor found me and put me in a room where I woke up. I looked around the stark white room; shiny, small white tiles were plastered all over the floor, making it cold to stand on. I got up and looked for a nurse or doctor to find out what had exactly happened. I walked around the seemingly empty hallway only to find a room with a bunch of doctors and nurses in it. I assumed it was a break room so I opened the door and gently knocked, getting their attention. As they looked at me, I got a very peculiar look from a doctor in the back of the room. He nods to me and walks out of the room, gesturing for me to follow him. I follow, only to be lead back to my hospital room.
The doctor sits down and tells me to do the same, to which I obey, and listen close to what he has to tell me. “You were in a coma for at least two and a half weeks…” he trails. “We were just about to try some new methods to wake you up.” He says with a half-smile.
“But?” I asked, curiously.
“But…” He said. “It would require a massive amount of power, we’d have to shut the whole hospital down to use a machine. The Avi-Matum.” He said, pointing to a large machine with two seats and a neural transmitter mounted on the head of the seat.
I then snap awake, my mind buzzing from the migraine and the flashback. “Oh, my god!” I exclaim to myself. I look at Charles, who has a worried look on his face, yet still looking at the road ahead. “Charles…” I started, air seemingly going stale in my mouth. “...The Avi-Matum.” I said. “That’s the energy source that I felt after touching that body, it matches the void-link energy the Avi-Matum uses!” I said, eyes wide and head pounding.
He looked at me, his expression went from worried to quizzical. “The Avi-Matum?! That system is used to wake others from their comas; how would–” He said, the cogs in his head turning. His eyes goes wide. “Oh, dear god…” He trailed off. “That girl was in a coma?” His voice, sorrowful. “How?” He nearly choked out.
I looked at him, a saddened expression filled my face. “I believe she had powers, too.” I stated. “Someone found out and killed her.” My voice angered. “I assume someone who has powers as well.” My fist clenched at this realization. “They did it either because they were scared of the power, or jealous of it.” My eyes burned and my vision had a hue of blue wash over everything.
I heard Charles slam the breaks and gasp. “Oh, fuck! Sarah!” He cried, frightened. He pulling over to the side of the road. He saw my eyes glow a hot white-blue, and energy of the same colour flickered and zap around my hands.
In a panic I look to him. "Charlie?!" I croak, breathing heavily.
Charles looked at me in utter shock – or maybe horror, I couldn’t tell – as the palms of my hands began to emit a harsh blue-white glow. “What the hell is happening to you?!” He exclaimed.
As soon as he asked that, the built up energy that was accumulating in my hands finally burst in every direction and everything went black.
(Meanwhile on Equus)
A dark blue mare shoots upward from her bed and bolts out of her room.
"Sister!" She exclaims.
A white mare looks to her sister in worry. "I felt it too, dear sister..."
