Chapters In the corner of a crowded, noisy room, a young Doberman pup lay curled up on a worn-out blanket, her ears laid flat against her head. She was trembling, not from the cold, but from fear and confusion. Her chocolate-brown eyes searched the room, trying to make sense of the unfamiliar sights and smells. This was not the place she remembered calling home. The floor was hard, the air was filled with the yelps and howls of other animals, the light was too bright and the smell of disinfectant constantly hung in the air.
Her name tag read 'Sunshine', but she knew that was not her name. She was Rainbow Dash, the fastest flier in Equestria. But here, in this place, she couldn't even spread her wings without bumping into cold metal bars. When she had wings anyway. Words couldn’t describe how she misses feeling wings on her back. She had learned from the employees of the shelter she was a six-month-old puppy, but she knew better. She was a pegasus. Fully grown, independent, a hero of her town and the Element of Loyalty. She had a life, a home and friends and family who she loved and missed badly. She didn't belong here. Since the day she woke up in this cage she remembered everything. Or at least she thought she did. She could recall her foalhood easily enough. Her old job as weather manager and eventually into a Wonderbolt. Most of all she could remember the five greatest friends she could have ever asked for. So why couldn't she remember how she got here?
The kennel she resided in wasn't in Ponyville, she knew that much. So her friends couldn't know she was trapped and helpless in a kennel with no hope of getting back to her old life.
At first she thought it was all an elaborate prank set up by Discord or possibly Twilight with some kind of illusion spell. When the first day ended Rainbow held onto the belief she was being tricked, hallucinating or locked inside her scrambled brain while she was really in the hospital recovering from a brain injury. Then the day turned into a week and the week turned into a month. Has it been a month? She couldn't know.
Rainbow Dash's stomach rumbled, a reminder that she hadn't eaten in what felt like forever. The food they gave her was strange, like nothing she'd ever tasted. It was dry and crunchy, not at all like the fresh fruits and vegetables she was used to. She knew it was dog food but calling it that only made it harder to eat it when she felt hungry enough to eat past the taste. There was always a full bowl right in front of her which she did her best to ignore. Then there was also the constant feeling of deep depression that was helping keep her ribs visible. When they let her out to "do her business" Rainbow Dash hardly found the will to get up and leave the cage to be under the sun. It was seeing the sky that made it most painful. The one thing she could no longer have was forever out of reach and she didn't want to look at it if she could help it. All she wanted to do was stay curled up in a ball and hope to wake back to her old life.
The ponies who worked here tried to cheer her up by giving her special toys, treats and lots of praise. Nothing was going to make her stubby tail wag. If anything their attempts made her feel worse, because they were treating her like the dog she appeared to be.
She wondered if the girls were looking for her. How much time has passed since she disappeared from Ponyville? The conversations she picked up from employees and potential adopters never mentioned her real name or of any missing pony. It was like she never existed.
One day the only shimmering bit of hope was a dark shadow. The usual two ponies that cared for the animals came in that morning as usual to refill their food and water bowls. When they came to Rainbow Dash the ponies still stopped to look down at her despite having two full bowls. Rainbow paid them no mind as they spoke of her. It was just another day of depressing captivity.
"She's going to die," one of the mares spoke.
The words cut through the cacophony of the shelter like a knife. Rainbow Dash's ears perked up at the whispered conversation between the two employees. She had heard similar comments before, but this one was different. It was said with a sadness that the others lacked, a genuine concern that made her heart clench.
"No, she's just really scared," the other pony replied, her voice gentler. "Look at her eyes. They're full of life. She just needs the right home, someone who can understand her."
"Sunshine has been here for over a month now," the first mare replied. "Nobody wants a depressed dog. We tried everything we could to make her happy. I don't like it anymore than you do but I think we need to start considering..."
Her voice trailed off as the other mare's eyes grew wide. Rainbow Dash could guess what that meant. Heck, she thought, maybe that is the only way I can leave this personal nightmare.
The gentler mare looked down on Rainbow with pity. She bent down to look into the pup's eyes. "Don't worry, Sunshine. I won't let that happen," she whispered. "I'll prove to them that you’re worth something. It’s just a matter of time before someone sees that in you like I do.”
Rainbow could almost appreciate the love and care this mare was showing but she was still talking to her like a dog. Still calling her that damn name! If only she could tell her her real name she would know just how special she truly was.
The next day, the shelter door swung open with a jingle of bells, letting in a burst of cool morning air. Rainbow Dash barely lifted her head from her paws, too tired to muster much interest in the latest round of potential adopters. They would barely glance at her, see her hopeless look and move on to the next kennel. Good riddance, Rainbow would say. But then she heard it. The unmistakable rasp of a young pegasus's voice. It was faint, muffled by the chatter of the ponies around her, but it was enough to make her heart race. Was that Scootaloo?
Rainbow forced herself to stand, her legs shaking as she stepped closer to the bars. There, among the crowd, was the young, orange pegasus filly with a purple mane and a sadness in her eyes that almost matched Rainbow's own. She was a little older than Rainbow recalled her to be but it was definitely her with her Winged Shield Cutie Mark. She was standing next to a taller, older pegasus, who had to be her mom. Now, here they were, searching through the kennels for a new family member.
Scootaloo's mom spoke to the employees while Scootaloo half-heartedly looked around the kennels.
"Scoots, come look at this one," she said, pointing to a hyperactive golden retriever. Scootaloo dragged her hooves, clearly unenthused by the idea.
Rainbow felt a pang of hope. If they were here for a dog, then maybe they could take Rainbow! Then she could find a way to communicate with them and get help from Twilight!
With all the strength she could muster, Rainbow started to bark. It was an awkward, forced sound, nothing like the majestic voice she had as Rainbow Dash but she hoped it would be enough to get Scootaloo's attention. It didn't get Scootaloo's attention but the mare who was talking with her mom gave her a confused look with a touch of hope. Rainbow didn't notice this as her attention was solely focused on getting her little sister to notice her. Scoots, it's me! she screamed in her mind. Scootaloo! Get me out of here!
"Look, she's trying to talk to you," the staff mare said to Scootaloo with a smile.
Scootaloo gave Rainbow a glance and looked around at the other dogs who were mimicking her. Scootaloo raised an eyebrow at the mare. "They all are."
The staff mare chuckled. "No, really. Sunshine here's usually so sad. It's like she's lost her will to live. But today, she's barking like crazy!"
Scootaloo shrugged, still not seeing the point of looking at another sad animal. Even if it did suddenly become a barking machine. She had enough of her own sadness back in Ponyville.
"Look, I know you may not think much of her, but she's so different now that you're here," the mare insisted. "See the way she's looking at you?"
Rainbow was indeed looking at Scootaloo with every ounce of hope she had left. Scoots, it's me! Rainbow Dash! Please, you've got to help me! Her thoughts echoed in her head, even though she knew they couldn't be heard by anyone else. She watched her like a hawk as Scootaloo took a half-hearted step closer, the sadness in her eyes momentarily lifting. Rainbow barked again, willing the filly to understand she needed her.
"Why is she so skinny?" Scootaloo asked, a little sadness in her tone.
The sudden question from Scootaloo made Rainbow's tail wag, despite the sadness that weighed it down. The employees looked at her with surprise, not expecting such a reaction from the usually unresponsive pup. Rainbow recognized the worry in Scootaloo's voice, and she tried to bark back, to reassure her, but all that came out was a pitiful whine.
The staff mare leaned in closer. "Aw, she's just not been eating much. She's really shy and has had a tough time adjusting to the shelter life."
I'll eat! I'll eat! Rainbow dove at her food bowl and began scarfing down the now stale food. Happy now? I'm eating! Still chewing the kibble in her mouth she threw her head back to see if Scootaloo was watching, making bits fly out and hit her face. Oops...
The mares exchanged glances, surprised by Rainbow's sudden change in demeanor. Scootaloo looked on, feeling a tug at her heartstrings. Something was definitely off about this pup. Her mom stepped closer to Rainbow's kennel, a gentle smile gracing her lips. "Looks like you've made a friend," she said to Scootaloo.
Scootaloo stepped closer, studying Rainbow with curiosity. Pondering on the decision she was about to make. Rainbow's eyes never left her sister, begging for her to understand. Please... please don't leave me here...
Finally, with a small nod, Scootaloo turned to her mom. "I guess she can come back home with us."
Rainbow couldn't believe it. Was this really happening? She felt a spark of joy that she hadn't felt in what felt like forever. It was like a warm light shone down from the heavens. She wagged her tail so hard her whole body wiggled. The employees looked shocked but delighted. They opened the cage door and let her out. Rainbow didn't bother to hide her excitement anymore. She bolted out and practically tackled Scootaloo to the floor and barked happily. This was it! This was her chance to get back home!
Rainbow could barely contain her excitement as she sat beside Scootaloo in the shelter’s front office. The staff were busy with Scootaloo’s mom filling out all the paperwork while they waited by the door. The door , Rainbow thought dreamily. She was going to walk out that door with hope because was leaving and never coming back. Not only that, she was leaving with her little sister! Someone she loved. Someone she trusted! Whether it was luck, fate or a random act of chance Rainbow wasn’t going to question it. She’ll be back in the air any day now.
Rainbow couldn’t help eyeing the quill they were using. How badly she wanted to jump up, grab that quill and with its sweet, black ink she would write out the message of who she really was. Maybe I should go for it now? I may not be able to fly but I’m still fast. I could write it fast. I’m Rainbow Dash! As if her canine body was agreeing with her mind Rainbow found herself already bent low to the ground ready to sprint and pounce. Before she could make her move a hoof began stroking her back, breaking her concentration. Whipping her head back with a cross look on her face Rainbow saw it was Scootaloo rubbing her back. She had practically forgotten she was there. Almost on instinct Rainbow immediately relaxed her body and backed up a little more into Scootaloo. On second thought, maybe it would be better to wait to get back to Ponyville. Rainbow had learnt a few moments ago the shelter she had been trapped in resided in Trottingham of all places. (The name of the town caught her ears as the staff were reading out the adoption contract.) It would be a far journey home if she did something to mess up the opportunity to get the fastest and easiest way home.
“Sunshine.”
Rainbow wanted to growl in frustration as Scootaloo said her ‘name’. It was a fine name and all for another dog she guessed but it wasn’t her name. She had a brown coat now for crying out loud! Apparently the staff named her that since they thought it would bring luck on improving her mood here. They were wrong. Dead wrong. Pegasi crashing, fire burning, moon shattering wrong.
“I’m not sure I like that name for you,” Scootaloo went on. “You need a cooler name.”
Rainbow’s ears perked up at the words. Of course Scootaloo didn’t like the name either. She was her little sister for a reason after all.
“Maybe Rain…” Scootaloo started. Rainbow flinched at the start of her name. “Actually, no…. No, I can’t make you live up to that name.”
Rainbow didn’t realize she tilted her head at Scootaloo’s words. What did she mean by that? Is she referring to Pegasus me? Does Scootaloo know something of what happened to me?
“But maybe something close to it.” Scootaloo looked down at Rainbow both clearly in deep thought for different reasons. “Something Rain… Cloud? No- Rain Splash? Ugh, that’s even worse. Rainstorm? Or maybe just Storm?”
Getting impatient with her confusion and hearing silly names, Rainbow let out a small bark at Scootaloo hoping to make her stop. You’re going to give me a headache, kid!
“You like the name Storm, huh?” Scootaloo asked, assuming that’s what the Doberman puppy wanted. “I guess it’s close enough. And a lot cooler than Sunshine.”
Storm is a cool name . Rainbow internally agreed. And a lot better than Sunshine. Just don’t get too used to calling me that cause I’m gonna be back in the air any day now. I’ll make sure you have an awesome dog to call Storm when I’m back. Something fast. Like a greyhound. For now, I’ll play along . She looked up at Scootaloo with hopeful eyes, her tail shuffling lightly on the floor. Wait, when did my tail start wagging?
The paperwork was soon completed and the gentle staffmare handed over a leash to Scootaloo. "Remember to keep Sunshine on a tight leash when outside. She might be a little frightened of the new sights and sounds. Your mom said you’re taking the train home tomorrow so don’t feed her too much before the trip and it will help if she has a chew toy to go for the ride.”
Scootaloo took the leash and nodded solemnly. Rainbow could tell she was excited but wasn’t letting it show. Rainbow herself felt a mix of emotions. She was happy to be out of the shelter but she was going to have to stay in this form for a bit longer. "Thanks," she replied to the staffmare with a smile. "I’ll take good care of her. And it’s Storm now.”
The staffmare blinked, confused. "I’m sorry, what did you say?"
"Her name is Storm now," Scootaloo repeated firmly, stroking the pup's back. "It suits her better. Also, it reminds me a little of my old sister.”
The staffmare looked puzzled but nodded, making a note of the name change. Rainbow unknowingly tilted her head again. ‘Old sister?’ Doesn’t she mean ‘Older sister?’ Whatever. It didn’t matter. All that mattered now was that Rainbow was to never see the inside of this shelter ever again. Even if it did mean being led out on a leash by her sister.
They stepped outside and Rainbow felt the sun’s warmth on her fur for the first time in what felt like an eternity. The sounds of the city were deafening compared to the cacophony of the shelter but she didn’t care. It was the smells that hit her first. The smell of fresh grass, the distant scent of rain, the faint aroma of donuts from a nearby bakery, and oh, the sweet scent of the clouds she longed to touch. Rainbow’s nose quivered, taking in every scent, trying to remember them all for when she’s back to her rightful form. The concrete was hard under her padded paws and she missed the feeling of the cool clouds beneath her hooves.
Soon, Rainbow. Soon.
Scootaloo’s mom led the way back to the place they were staying as Scootaloo and Rainbow followed close behind. They had to walk back since carriages didn’t allow dogs unless they were in a crate. Rainbow didn’t mind though. For the first time in what felt like eons she was actually feeling quite happy.
The sights and sounds of the city were indeed overwhelming to Rainbow’s canine senses. Every little thing was a new experience to her. Carriages rolling, birds chirping, foals laughing, it was like her mind was a sponge soaking everything up. Rainbow’s eyes widened at certain things she saw. Things like a squirrel scurrying up a tree, a cat lounging on a windowsill, and other dogs that came too close for comfort as they walked by. Why am I only now feeling tense at the sight of other animals? I was locked up with them for what felt like years and handled it easily enough . It was a world she knew so well but had never truly experienced from such a low point of view. The sounds were so much louder down here, the smells so much more pungent and the sights so much... much more. Guess you really don’t know what you have until you’re a dog.
They arrived at a large apartment building. It was cleaner than Rainbow had expected and had a fancy glass door with a gold handle. She had to admit, it was really decent. Something a Wonderbolt could retire in. They all approached the door that had a buzzer with a list of names. Rainbow tried to read the names but they were written in some kind of squiggly code that she couldn’t make out. Who makes squiggly lines rather than actual names at a door buzzer? Was this some kind of fancy place only ponies like Rarity could know why the list of names were in code?
They didn’t need to buzz in, it seemed as Scoot’s mom produced a key from her saddlebag and unlocked the door for them. Feeling hesitant for some reasons Rainbow followed behind Scootaloo as far as the leash would allow it. She wasn’t looking to try and run off or anything. She needed Scootaloo. This place just felt so big. Like she didn’t belong here and the building knew it. Fully inside the entryway Rainbow jumped feeling a strong cold breeze go over her body followed by a strong scent of metal. What the hay is that? Scootaloo noticed Rainbow’s little panic and was quick to see what the problem was.
“It’s just the AC, Storm,” she explained, giving a gentle tug on the leash. “You’ll get used to them.”
Rainbow eyes found the metal contraption on the wall. She had never felt so cold in Ponyville, not even during winter. As a Pegasus she easily adapted to the cold weather like all pegasi did. Being a weather manager required more tolerance to the cold, too. Now as a dog she was feeling the bite of air conditioning. The coat she now bore was so sleek and short it made her feel weak and vulnerable. No, Scoots. I won’t get used to it. I don’t want to get used to it. I want to go home and get my life back and that’s exactly what I’m going to get. Rainbow gave the AC a dirty look before walking on.
Seeing there was no elevator in this apartment they had to take the stairs. From the long walk and the journey up the stairs Rainbow was now finding herself worn out. Again, this sort of exercise would be an easy thing to do as her old self. She looked at Scootaloo who was trotting up the stairs with ease and envy filled her. Even with her shorter legs she was doing better. Rainbow’s tongue lolled out of her mouth, panting as they stopped in front of a door leading to a hall of door. They were almost there now. Whether the place had a cold stone floor or shag carpet Rainbow was going to collapse on it and sleep for a month. This puppy gig sucks rocks! And what kind of fancy apartment doesn’t have an elevator?
They finally reached the apartment and with another twist of the key they were inside. Rainbow took in her surroundings. It was definitely more decent than the shelter. One of the first things she noticed was the plush feel of carpet beneath her paws. The walls were painted a soft yellow adorned with family photos, the couch was a plush blue velvet, a rather long dining table and what had to be the most beautiful thing Rainbow had ever seen in a long time was a writing desk. A writing desk with quills and ink to be exact. Oh yeah, I’ll definitely be using those later. But for now I really need to rest up. I doubt I could even make it to the desk let alone write out a message.
“Make yourself comfortable, Storm," Scootaloo said, unclipping the leash.
Rainbow didn’t need a second invitation. She stumbled over and flopped down on the carpet with a contented sigh. Rainbow could feel the fatigue from the day wash over her. Scootaloo sat beside her gently rubbing her back, “Good girl, Storm.”
And that was the last thing Rainbow heard before falling into a deep sleep.
The sound of the bustling streets down below was the first thing she could hear when Rainbow woke up. She yawned and stretched out her limbs, her body feeling surprisingly rested despite the discomfort of the floor. Gently raising her head, she looked around and found the room bathed in the soft glow of moonlight. Guess they decided to not to disturb me and went to bed themselves.
With a renewed sense of urgency, Rainbow felt her need for water. As a dog, the necessity for hydration was more pressing than ever. Her tongue was sticky and dry, and she could feel the thirst from her core. She pushed herself to her feet and padded over to the kitchen area, her eyes searching for a bowl or anything that would hold water. There it was, a shiny metal bowl by the fridge. Making her way to it like a mare lost in a scorching desert Rainbow shoved her muzzle in the water and began to drink, and drink, and drink. Never had water going down her throat felt so good.
As she lapped up the cool water she couldn’t help but stare at the quills and ink on the desk in the other room. Now that she wasn’t tired anymore she knew exactly what she had to do. Rainbow’s mind was racing on what words she’d use to write. I’ve got to let them know it’s me. That I’m not just some stray puppy. That I’m a Pegasus! That I’m Rainbow Dash! And I have to do it without waking anybody. Who knows when I’ll get another shot at this?
Moving as quietly as she could, Rainbow crept over to the desk. She took a deep breath, trying to calm herself. She had to be careful. If she knocked something over, she’d be caught for sure. With a silent prayer to Celestia she picked up a quill with her mouth and dipped it into the inkwell. The quill felt strange between her teeth. It was so much thinner and more fragile than she was used to. But she had to try. She had to get her message out there. Rainbow approached the paper with determination, her tail wagging slightly with excitement. This was it.
But as she went to write, she found herself frozen. The quill hovered just above the paper, trembling slightly. Rainbow stared at the paper, feeling utterly lost. The thoughts in her head were as clear as the noonday sky, but she couldn’t translate them into the familiar strokes of ink she knew so well. Panic began to set in. Did she forget how to write? It couldn’t be. She’s written hundreds, no, thousands of times. Maybe not big words like Twilight could but still!
She took a step back, bumping the ink pot with her paw and dropped the quill in her teeth. It clattered on the desk, and she watched as a tiny pool of ink began to spread out. Rainbow felt a strong feeling of frustration. How could she have forgotten something so fundamental? So easy to remember? Could there be anything else she couldn’t now do as a dog? Wait… those squiggly lines on the buzzer list. No… Surely not.
Her eyes darted to the bookshelf. It was filled with books of all colors and sizes. Rainbow trotted over to it, her tail tucked between her legs. Her eyes scanned the spines, hoping to find some semblance of order. But as she looked closer, she realized she couldn’t read them either. The letters and words were just more squiggles, indecipherable to her canine eyes. Panic turned into horror. What kind of curse is this? To take away not just her ability to fly but to read and write? Rainbow felt a low growl build in her throat, she hadn’t realized she had forgotten how to read and write too. She nosed through the books hoping that she could at least read some small words. But it was like trying to catch smoke with her teeth.
The room began to spin around her as the reality of her situation sunk in. She had been so focused on flying again that she hadn’t even considered the possibility that she had lost more than just her wings. Rainbow felt a tear slide down her furry cheek. It was a sadness she hadn’t felt since she was stuck in the Everfree Forest all those years ago, lost and unable to find her way out. But she wasn’t lost anymore. Not in the same way at least. Lost in the sense of who she was and what she had become. Lost in a world she knew so well but was now so alien to her. Lost as Rainbow Dash. Lost as Storm.
Rainbow stepped back from the bookshelf, her body trembling slightly. She couldn’t do this. Not now. Not when she was so close to getting home. She had to keep it together. Rainbow took a deep breath and turned around to find Scootaloo standing in the doorway, her tired eyes locked on her newly adopted puppy. Rainbow looked up at her wondering how much she seen? Rainbow stood frozen in the dark waiting to hear what Scootaloo would have to say because all she could manage to get out was a small, reluctant whimper.
“Storm, what have you done?” Scootaloo scolded in a hushed tone, looking at the mess she made on the desk along with the books scattered on the floor. “This isn’t even our home!”
Rainbow looked back at the ink mess she had made earlier, then back at Scootaloo. Her canine face looked as if to say, Whoops.
Scootaloo sighed, walking over to the desk and carefully picking up the quill. She dipped it in the inkwell to clean it off before setting it back in its stand. Rainbow watched her sister’s deft hooves move with a grace she no longer possessed. Her paws felt clumsy in comparison, unable to hold the quill the way she used to. Thinking she should at least help where she could Rainbow went back to the books and began to pick up a book between her teeth.
“Storm, no!”
Rainbow immediately dropped the book in her mouth and looked back to see her sister coming over to her with a cross look. She snatched up the book and shoved it in Rainbow’s face.
“You don’t chew books!” Scootaloo whispered angrily, pushing the book closer to her face as it were a holy artifact that would expel the chewing demon from her body. Thankfully, Rainbow wasn’t playing as Twilight’s new pet or she may not have lived to see tomorrow. “These are not for you! No!”
Rainbow couldn’t help recoiling at the scolding. She was just trying to help and Scootaloo was angry at her for it. It made her feel worthless, scared and small. Like… a bad dog… The sudden thought felt like a bee sting to her heart. No, I’m not a bad dog! I'm not a dog at all! I’m Rainbow Dash! I’m the Rainbow Dash! I’m cool! I’m awesome! I’m … Rainbow glanced back at Scootaloo’s angry face hoping she would understand. I’m not a bad dog. I’m not a bad dog. I just want to go home, Scoots… I just want to go home.
Scootaloo saw the fear in Storm’s eyes and realized she may have gone too far. Storm was in new surroundings after all. She didn’t know the rules of any of that stuff yet. Letting out another deep sigh, Scootaloo put the rest of the books back into place, cleaned the desk up and came back to Storm whispering comforting words. Storm seemed to understand she was forgiven as she sat up properly and rested her head against Scootaloo’s chest whimpering softly. Scootaloo gave her head a gentle pat and a scratch behind the ear. Her touch was oddly more comforting than Rainbow thought it would be.
“It’s okay, Storm. I shouldn’t have left you alone. I’m still kind of adjusting to the idea of how you’re gonna be my best friend. I’ll try to remember that.” Scootaloo gave her one final pat and turned away. “Come on, you can sleep in the bed with me.”
Rainbow stayed put staring into space trying to process what just happened. Why did I submit to Scootaloo like that? Why was I so afraid of her? And why did I feel so guilty? I’m supposed to be her big sister. Well, you’re not her big sister, are you? a nasty voice spoke in her head. Not anymore.
“Storm, come on. Let’s go to bed, okay?” Scootaloo’s voice was softer now, filled with concern. “We’re going home tomorrow.”
Home.
That sounded so awesome right now. Just get home first. Then she could worry about finding a way to communicate to her friends. Her five best friends… her one friend…. Hope began to swell inside Rainbow Dash like a balloon. Holding on to the idea tight in her mind Rainbow went after Scootaloo eagerly accepting the offer to share the bed.
Fluttershy, you and I are gonna have a long talk.

I just wanna say thanks to those who appreciate the story. I honestly didn't expect anything from readers. I just wanted to finally leave my piece on the fandom. Honestly, the support of seeing just one user following or favouriting the story gives me a boost to write out more. I was planning to post once a week but seeing the small yet awesome support I decided I'd post this early.
This story was meant to be short but as I wrote it became longer than I thought it was going to be. I already have several chapters planned out.

The next day dawned with the promise of a new beginning for Rainbow. The morning was a blur of excitement and nerves as they packed up their things and headed to the train station. The staffmare at the shelter had warned them that dogs weren’t allowed in the passenger cars, so Rainbow found herself being led into the cargo hold. The smell was intense. A mix of hay, engine oil, and something she couldn't place. It was a tight space, filled with crates and luggage. Rainbow looked around, her ears drooped as she realized she’d be spending the journey in there.
The door slammed shut with a heavy thud, and the world outside grew quieter as the train started moving. Rainbow whined a little, feeling the vibrations of the train’s engines beneath her paws. It was eerie, being in such a confined space, surrounded by strange noises and smells. She felt so... small. So helpless. Not like Rainbow Dash at all. She chastised herself when the thought What would Rainbow Dash do? crossed her mind. You’re Rainbow Dash, dummy! And what you’re going to do is not panic, not cry and certainly not wet yourself! Scootaloo made sure you went before getting on the train. Oh, thanks brain! I totally never want to forget one of the most humiliating parts of my life!
The journey was long and uncomfortable. Rainbow tried to sleep but the constant jostling of the train kept her on edge. She could feel the anticipation building with every passing moment, her muscles tense with the need to be out of this metal box. She missed the open sky, the feel of the wind in her cyan coat. She missed flying. She missed being Rainbow Dash. Right now all she had to help her cope was a plush teddy bear. She managed to ignore it for about five minutes before finally deciding to give a chew toy a try to calm her down. Rainbow was embarrassed to admit to herself that the act was sort of helping. Still, it kind of felt like she was a foal sucking on a pacifier to keep her from wailing.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the train screeched to a halt. Rainbow’s ears perked up at the sound of hooves and voices outside the cargo hold. The door slammed open, and the blinding light of Ponyville’s sun filled the space. Rainbow Dash was relieved to see Scootaloo already waiting for her, leash in hoof. Rainbow Dash had other plans, though. She didn’t want to upset Scootaloo with her plan but it had to be done. She’d understand soon enough.
Keeping a passive look on her face Rainbow patiently waited for Scootaloo to unlock the cage door. The second she heard the unmistakable click of a lock being undone, Rainbow burst out with such force it knocked Scootaloo on her flank, and she was on the run. Rainbow heard Scootaloo calling for ‘Storm’ to stop and come back along with the urge to listen. No, she had to do this. Fluttershy’s cottage wasn’t far from the train station. She could make it. She had to.
The wind felt strange blowing through her fur as she sprinted through the streets of Ponyville. Rainbow felt a bit of pride knowing she was probably the fastest dog in the town. At least she still had that. The town looked different from this perspective. So many more things to sniff and pee on. Wait, what? Focus, Dash! Ignoring the yells of surprise from the ponies she rushed by, Rainbow had to focus harder to block out Scootaloo’s voice. She sounded close but Rainbow wasn’t going to chance looking back to see what would most likely be a look of hurt and betrayal.
It took her less than five minutes to reach the cottage. Rainbow’s legs burned from the exercise and she panted heavily. She was severely out of shape. This whole being a dog thing was really ruining her cardio. Forcing herself to push past her exhaustion Rainbow leapt up at the front door and began frantically scratching followed by immense barking. Barking for regular pony folk but Rainbow knew Fluttershy would understand she was yelling for her to open the door.
“Fluttershy! I need your help! Open up! It’s me, Rainbow!”
The door swung open and standing there was Fluttershy, looking as lovely as ever. Rainbow’s heart soared. She was home! Fluttershy yelped in fright as Rainbow pounced upon her friend and began frantically explaining her situation.
“Fluttershy, it’s me! Rainbow Dash! I’ve been turned into a dog, and I need your help! Don’t be scared, I know I look different, but I’m still me!” Rainbow’s barks were a flurry of hope and desperation.
Fluttershy took a step back, her eyes wide in shock. Rainbow’s hope began to dwindle as she watched her friend’s expression shift from fear to confusion. Did she not recognize her? Or was she just so out of her element that she couldn’t comprehend what was happening? Rainbow felt a cold droplet of doubt trickle down her spine. What if Fluttershy couldn’t understand her? What if none of them could?
Then Fluttershy spoke, “Rainbow Dash?”
Her voice was a whisper, but it washed over Rainbow like a cool breeze on a hot day. Relief flooded her. She had been heard. She hadn’t lost everything.
But before Rainbow could bask in the sweet victory of being recognized, she heard the sound of hooves thundering towards them. Rainbow turned to see Scootaloo, panting and out of breath. She had been chasing her this whole time. Rainbow felt bad for making her run all this way, but it was overshadowed by the fear of not getting back to normal. Knowing they were short on time, Rainbow looked back at Fluttershy.
“Fluttershy! Please, I need your help!” Rainbow begged. “You need-“
“Gotcha!”
Scootaloo had finally caught up with her and snapped the leash back onto her collar. Rainbow felt the cold metal tighten around her neck, and she knew she was in deep trouble. No, I’m not in trouble! I’m saved! Fluttershy knows it’s me now! All hope of that was snuffed out when Rainbow looked back at Fluttershy to see a scared look on her face. No… she heard me. She understood me! She said my name! My real name!
“Fluttershy?” Rainbow whispered, feeling scared. Not because she had made Scootaloo angry with her. It was because Fluttershy was showing no sign of willing to give the help she so desperately needed. “Flutters? Please.”
I can’t believe you did this, Storm!” Scootaloo snapped, yanking Rainbow away from Fluttershy’s doorstep. “Just what were you thinking? I’m so sorry, Fluttershy! I just got her from Trottingham and I think the train ride spooked her too much. No prizes for guessing why she would feel safe here, huh? Funny she knew how to get here though.”
Rainbow’s heart sank. Fluttershy was looking down at her with disbelief and pity. Not recognition. Why? Why won’t she help me? Fluttershy closed her eyes and took a deep breath before opening them and faced Scootaloo. Was she going to help her now? Did she just need a second to process seeing her old friend was a dog now?
“It’s okay, Scootaloo. She’s just overwhelmed. Poor girl,” Fluttershy said, her voice gentle despite her obvious distress. “I’m sure she’ll start to relax once you take her home. And if you don’t mind me saying: she needs to put on some weight. Dobermans aren’t meant to be this skinny.”
"Will do, Fluttershy! And sorry again for the disturbance."
Fluttershy's words felt like lightning strike to Rainbow's heart. Her pointed ears flattened and she slumped, defeated. As Scootaloo pulled her away, she threw a pleading look over her shoulder. Fluttershy remained in the doorway, watching them leave with a sad expression that spoke volumes of her disappointment. Anger began to rise in Rainbow’s chest. She had just been betrayed by someone she knew she could count on. The absolute nerve of that yellow-bellied Pegasus! That turncoat!
“I know you heard me, you traitor!” Rainbow barked furiously at her. “I trusted you! I hate you! I hate you!”
The words have done what Rainbow wanted them to do this time. She watched in satisfaction seeing tears begin to well up in Fluttershy’s eyes. Then the satisfaction was quickly diminished as Rainbow’s dog ears heard a soft sob and the slam of her door. The sound of her crying still reaching her. No, she had to fix this. She didn’t know why Fluttershy wouldn’t help her. There had to be a good reason. Rainbow tried to pull back on the leash to get back to Fluttershy; Scootaloo’s grip wasn’t going to allow her weak puppy body to do so. Tears began to well up in Rainbow’s own eyes now.Oh, Fluttershy, I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.
“Come on, Storm, let’s go home,” Scootaloo said, seeming to be happy there was no serious harm done. “Everything will be okay. I promise.”
Home . Rainbow had thought she had just arrived there, yet she hadn’t. She was in a town she hadn’t been to in a body she hadn’t wanted. And she had no idea how to get back to being herself. She had thought that getting to Ponyville would be the end of this nightmare, now she knew it was just the beginning. Rainbow’s head hung low as she let Scootaloo lead her away from the cottage. The anger was gone. It had been replaced with a sadness so deep it felt like it was going to swallow her whole.
As they walked, Rainbow took in the familiar sights of Ponyville. Everything looked so different. So much had changed in the short time she’d been gone. New stalls had popped up, new faces in the crowd. And yet, it was all so... the same. Like nothing had changed at all. The irony wasn’t lost on her. Rainbow had been the one who was always looking for the next adventure, the next thrill. Now she was stuck in a body that couldn’t even get her to the clouds she called home.
They arrived at the house and Scootaloo led Rainbow into a cozy looking room with a large bed, a bowl of food and water already waiting for her. Scoot’s aunts must have known they were coming. Rainbow felt tired beyond belief. Maybe it was the running or maybe it was the weight of her failure. Either way she didn’t resist as Scootaloo guided her to the bed. She curled up into a tight ball. What now? Was she going to live out the rest of her days as a dog? Would she ever get to tell her friends the truth? Would she ever get to tell anyone the truth? Rainbow’s stomach twisted at the thought. She had to find a way to tell them. To get them to understand. Right now it felt like any plan she could think of wouldn’t work. So for now she was done making plans. There was something more important to take care of anyway. She needed to make things right with Fluttershy. And Scootaloo. I need to stop being so reckless. I may not be her big sister in this body, but I’m always going to be her friend. No matter what I look like.
Scootaloo sat by Rainbow Dash’s side, her eyes never leaving Rainbow’s. Rainbow hoped she could see how sorry for taking off like that. She didn’t deserve it. She didn’t deserve to have her emotions toyed with. Rainbow closed her eyes and took a deep breath, willing herself to take a much needed nap. When I wake up maybe I’ll try giving this puppy thing a shot. For now.
Upon waking up Rainbow found herself in the middle of the Ponyville park. She was laying on her back on the grass with all her friends surrounding her looking down with concern.
“Y’all took quite the tumble there, sugarcube,” Applejack said.
“Just what were you trying to do anyway?” Twilight chimed in.
Rainbow took a second to clear the cobwebs from her mind. Then one by one she looked at all her friends' looks of relief on their faces. In turn Rainbow felt massively relieved herself. I’m back! She raised her hoof over her eyes to see her sweet, sweet blue hoof. A wide smile spread on Rainbow Dash’s face. It was all just one big nightmare. I’m gonna have to send a letter to Princess Luna about the length of my nightmares. Right now she was all too happy to be back with her friends.
“Yeah,” Pinkie Pie exclaimed, smiling ever so brightly. “You know how expensive vet bills can get? It’s crazy!”
Rainbow Dash’s blood ran cold. What did she just say? Before she could ask Pinkie to repeat herself Rarity spoke up.
“Honestly, Darling, anyone watching that reckless stunt one could have sworn you were trying to fly. The absurdity of it all! A dog thinking it can fly!”
No…
“No, guys! I’m not a dog!” Rainbow scrambled to her hooves. “Look at me! I’m obviously a pony!”
The girls all looked at Fluttershy as if she was Rainbow’s translator. Fluttershy cleared her throat and responded confidently, “She said she was pretending to be a Pegasus and got a little carried away with the act.”
“What? No! I-“ Rainbow’s protests were cut short as her tongue fell out of her mouth. It was now long, flat and slobbery. An icy cold fear instantly overcame her.
Rainbow shot her hooves up to her mouth trying to push her tongue back in. The feeling of sharp teeth came to greet her. Tears began to roll down her eyes. The humiliation of the transformation of her mouth and crying in front of her friends burned like fire.
“I think Sunshine has had enough excitement for today,” Fluttershy said, walking towards her with a leash.
My name’s not Sunshine! I’m Storm! Wait, I mean Rainbow Dash!
The words remained stuck in Rainbow’s throat as she felt the cold metal of the leash clip onto the collar she didn’t know she was wearing. This isn’t happening! This isn’t real! This isn’t real!
Fluttershy began to lead Rainbow away while their friends waved and called goodbye to them. The words of them yelling out how she was such a good girl today felt so mocking. The fact that they sounded genuine made it worse.
Why was Fluttershy acting like this? Why wouldn’t she help her? Rainbow felt the anger rising again, and she began to struggle against the leash. Fluttershy’s grip was firm, and she pulled Rainbow back into line with surprising strength.
“No, Sunshine, no pulling. You know better than that,” Fluttershy said, her sickly sweet.
Stop calling me that! A deep, angry growl emitted from her muzzle promising a world of hurt. You want to treat me like your dog? Fine, I'll be your dog! Rainbow launched herself at her friend and knocked her down to the ground. Not giving her a chance to even guess what happened Rainbow was on her front, her muzzle continuing to make savage growls. The fear on Fluttershy’s face was pleasing to Rainbow Dash. This was gonna be so much fun.
Rainbow eyes snapped open, swiftly trying to push herself away from Fluttershy; she didn’t notice she was still laying down in her dog bed and Fluttershy was nowhere to be seen. When her mind began to understand it was all a bad dream Rainbow felt so disgusted with herself. Despite knowing one can never really be in control of their actions in dreams Rainbow still felt ashamed of what her mind had made her see.
Thankfully, she had woken up before she could act upon the evil deed, but not before she heard Fluttershy’s terrified scream.
As much as she hated the feeling, Rainbow felt the need for someone to hold her. Tell her it was all going to be okay. She noticed Scootaloo was in the next room sitting up at the table appearing to be in the middle of writing something. Shoving back her pride as far as she could, Rainbow slowly walked towards Scootaloo’s side and rested her head against her lap, adding a soft whine to let her know she needed comfort.
Scootaloo paused her scribbling, looking down at the sad puppy beside her. Rainbow watched as she put the pen down and slid off the chair. She knew what was coming next and she didn’t fight it. Scootaloo’s forelegs wrapped around her in a gentle hug, which was more than Rainbow could have ever hoped for. It was soothing and comforting in a way that the fluffy bed wasn’t. Rainbow leaned into the warmth and felt the tightness in her chest ease up.
“Still feeling scared, huh, Storm?”
Rainbow involuntarily nodded with her head over Scootaloo's shoulder so neither of them noticed.
Scootaloo patted her back once more and pulled away from her, “Well, maybe this will cheer you up.”
She reached for the paper she was scribbling on and brought in front of Rainbow’s eyes. The sight before her wasn’t squiggly notes she couldn’t read but a sketch. A sketch of what appeared to be of a shield with what Rainbow guessed to be chaotic lightning in the middle of it. Assuming that’s what it was, Rainbow looked at Scootaloo for clarification.
“It’s gonna be your new collar,” Scootaloo explained, happily pointing at the sketch. “Cause my Cutie Mark is a shield and your name being Storm I thought this would be the perfect design. Also, I’m thinking the collar should be purple but I don’t know if that’s your color. Maybe dark blue. There’s still a lot of time to decide since I still need to collect the bits to get it made.”
Rainbow felt a warm feeling in her stomach, a feeling she hadn’t felt since she was in her own body. It was a feeling of belonging. Scootaloo had accepted her, even went the extra mile to make sure she felt she was at home. Rainbow looked into her eyes and gave a gentle lick on her cheek. It was all she could do to express her gratitude.
It looks great, Scoots.
There was a sudden knock at the door, and Rainbow’s head swung back. She began to bark, the sound echoing through the house. Her tail wagged nervously, and she jumped to her paws, ready to protect her home. It wasn’t until Rainbow got to the door that she realized what she was doing. Why did I just lose myself there? I mean I know why, but why?
“Back up, Storm,” Scootaloo nudged her away from the door so she could open it. “Oh… hi Fluttershy. Is this about Storm?”
Fluttershy was here? I need to see her! Forcing herself between the doorframe and Scootaloo she was stopped by her hoof before she could fully get out. Rainbow’s body was too weak to outmatch her strength. “Whoa there, girl. It’s okay, calm down,” Scootaloo soothed, pushing Rainbow back gently. Rainbow still tried to push past but stopped when she saw Fluttershy's eyes. She had clearly been crying. I did that to her. Rainbow suddenly didn't want Fluttershy to see her anymore. I don't deserve her help. Not after what I did.
“Well…” Fluttershy spoke, looking more nervous and timid than usual. “Yes.”
Author's Note
It’s chapters like these that make furious when the author leaves it incomplete and never comes back. Even though I understand how life gets in the way of what we really want. That being said if this story goes untouched for about two weeks it means I’m dead
Scootaloo nodded understandingly, “I take it Storm did something in your gardens? Sorry, I’ll come clean it up right now.”
“Oh, no, nothing like that,” Fluttershy replied, showing a slight blush. “I was actually hoping if I could see Storm a bit more closely? I know you already know of her diet situation but when I thought more about the state of her I think I noticed some other concerns. Nothing serious,” she added, seeing Scootaloo’s worried expression.
“Oh, okay then. She’s right here,” Scootaloo gestured to an empty space that Storm had just occupied. “Well, she was. Storm?”
Rainbow ignored Scootaloo’s call. She was still working on stuffing herself under Scootaloo’s bed, her doggy nails scratching at the wooden floor as she tried. It was easy enough to do with Scootaloo not having too much stuff under her bed. This isn’t a dog thing , Rainbow assured herself. If I could fly home and lock my door I would. This is my best option.
Rainbow Dash wasn’t ready to face Fluttershy. Not yet. Not after the awful things she yelled at her. After her little outburst Rainbow wasn’t able to look Fluttershy in the eye and crept away before she or Scootaloo could notice. This day was putting too much on her. So much has happened from the uncomfortable train ride, the mad dash to Fluttershy's cottage, Scootaloo chasing her, hastily told Fluttershy that one of her best friends had turned into a dog and needed her to do something. Fluttershy had understood her, there was no doubt about that. Now that she had time to think under Scoot’s bed she guessed she could have waited to find Fluttershy. It would only be a matter of time before Scootaloo ‘introduced’ Storm to her. Rainbow had completely forgotten how sensitive Fluttershy could be. She must have seen Rainbow thinking she was a stray and needed help. Then I started spewing out crazy nonsense even though it was the truth; I came on too strong. I definitely came as too much of a shock to her and who could blame her? I don’t know how long I’ve been gone or what caused me to disappear. She probably thought she had gone nuts. All because I was aiming for what I wanted. I couldn’t have cared less if her house was on fire with the way I acted.
“Storm, are you in here?”
That voice. That sweet, kind and caring voice: Fluttershy.
Rainbow curled up tight under the bed trying not to make any noise to give away her hiding spot. Just go away. Please just go. I’ll just mess up again.
Fluttershy’s hooves moved, telling Rainbow she was getting closer. She breathed in as quietly as she could and held it in. There couldn’t be even the slightest clue she was under here. Then the clouds opened up revealing the majestic Princess Celestia in all her glory. She smiled down upon her scared subject’s predicament and said, ‘I hate you, Rainbow Dash.’
In other words: Rainbow Dash had sneezed.
There was no way Fluttershy didn’t hear her. Rainbow could see her yellow hooves pause, inches away from her nose.
“Storm?”
Rainbow thought for sure she had been busted. That sneeze was practically a thunderclap. Yet, Fluttershy resumed to pace around the room. It was as if Princess Luna, with all her grace, had flown in front of Celestia’s eyes of doom, blocking the misfortune it would bring down upon her. Then Luna winked at her most awesome subject and said, ‘We hate thee as well, Rainbow Dash!’
In other words: Rainbow sneezed again.
“Oh, you’re under the bed, aren’t you?" Fluttershy said, knowing the answer.
Rainbow’s eyes shifted left and right. She had been discovered. Maybe there was still a chance she could get out of it? Gotta be careful now, Rainbow shuffled backwards hoping to get out from the under the bed before Fluttershy could peak underneath. There was hope Princess Cadance would-
*bump*
The familiar feeling of a pony's legs were felt on Rainbow's hindquarters. She didn't need nor want to look back to know Cadance had indeed hated her guts, too. Without a second thought, Rainbow Dash scurried back to the middle. She knew she was being a coward but she had her fill of today. Whether Fluttershy was here to yell at her or forgive her, Rainbow didn't want to know.
“Did you find Storm? I can’t find her anywhere!” Scootaloo rushed in, her voice laced with panic. There I go, putting Scoots through unnecessary drama.
“Calm down, I found her,” Fluttershy spoke in her motherly tone. “She’s under the bed- but before you try to pull her out,” she quickly added as Scootaloo moved toward the bed. “I would like to have a few moments alone with her. I think she needs to get something off her chest. Can you give me some time with Storm, Scootaloo?”
“When you’re done can you share what’s bothering her?” Scootaloo asked. “I want to help any way I can.”
“I’ll see what I can do.”
With a nod Scootaloo left the room, closing the door gently behind her incase Storm would make another break for it. Rainbow was shaking like she used to in the shelter as she watched Fluttershy’s hooves draw closer. Her trio of butterflies Cutie Mark came into view as she sat down. Rainbow looked back at her own flank almost expecting to see her Cutie Mark. Of course it was nowhere to be seen.
“Rainbow Dash,” Fluttershy began with a tone that asserted there wasn’t going to be any argument. No backtalk and no insults.
Rainbow practically felt like she had no choice but to answer, “Yes, Fluttershy?”
“You really hurt me,” she stated.
“I’m sorry.”
“I know you are but your behavior was inexcusable. I have put bigger puppies on timeout for far less, you know.”
“That’s not why you’re here, though... Right?”
“As much as I should be, no I’m not. You came to me for help and I do want to help you, but we can’t discuss it here. Not like this.”
“Why not?”
“Because I need to understand, Dash. I need to know how exactly you got here like you are now. In order for that to happen we need to talk more privately.”
“I’ll tell you everything I know but can’t we just go to Twilight now? She’ll understand better than any of us.”
“I know you want that to be an option but it’s not. Twilight isn’t in Ponyville right now and there are things you don’t understand yet. Things you’ll have to understand before we do anything.”
“What could I possibly need to understand?”
“I promise we’ll talk about it. Until then you are going to be on your best behavior for Scootaloo. You have no idea how badly she needs you as Storm. The poor filly has been through enough as it is.”
“What? What happened to Scootaloo? What did I miss? How much did I miss? Fluttershy, how long have I been gone?”
There was long silence before Fluttershy answered, Rainbow was about to ask again when Fluttershy forced herself to speak.
“I promise we’ll talk about it soon. Now one more thing before I go.”
“What’s that?”
“Will you please come out? So I can hug my friend?”
Rainbow’s eyes watered up as she heard the sincerity in Fluttershy’s voice. She had missed this so much. Being able to communicate with her friends. Being able to feel their love and warmth. Taking a deep breath she slid out from under the bed and looked up at her old friend. Tears were already coming down her face as they came face to face. Unable to hold back anymore the two embraced each other in a tight hug.
“I missed you,” Fluttershy whispered in her ear.
Rainbow had to take a second to steady her voice before responding, “I missed you, too, and I’m really sorry for what I said earlier. I didn’t mean a word of it.”
“I know, Rainbow,” Fluttershy assured her friend. “I know. Just don’t do it again, okay?”
“Pinkie promise.”
They didn’t know how long they stayed holding each other. All that seemed to matter now was that Rainbow had her friend back and no intention of losing her again. A big part of Rainbow didn’t want Fluttershy to leave. Scootaloo would still be there for her, however, Fluttershy was now the only pony she could speak with and there was so much to say.
The next morning, Rainbow awoke to find herself alone in Scoot’s bed. Sniffing the air, Rainbow could smell Scootaloo was close. Her hearing also tipped her off that she was downstairs. Getting up on all fours Rainbow yawned, circled around the bed and laid back down; only this time she was taking the pillow for herself. Sleep almost came back instantly to her before a different scent wafted into her nose. Hold on… I know that smell. Oh my gosh there’s hay bacon strips on the stove! Rainbow’s eyes shot open and she jumped off the bed hustling downstairs. She couldn’t remember the last time she smelled something so heavenly. Mouth watering, Rainbow sped down the stairs and practically pranced into the kitchen.
Standing at the front of the oven cooking the food of the gods was the light yellow earth pony with an orange mane: Aunt Holiday. Scootaloo already introduced ‘Storm’ to her and her other Aunt Lofty when they got home yesterday afternoon. They both took an immediate liking to her. Especially Holiday who thought her to be ‘the most sweetest baby girl in town’. Rainbow was glad Scootaloo came to her defense telling her aunt, Storm needs to be known as an awesome dog. Not as a baby. Holiday only smiled and whispered to Lofty so Scootaloo wouldn’t hear her say: ‘an awesome, sweet baby girl’. Rainbow Dash, however, did hear. Times like that she was glad she couldn’t blush.
“Well, good morning, sweetheart!” Aunt Holiday sang out as Rainbow walked into the kitchen, her eyes locked on the heavenly smelling food. Kneeling down Aunt Holiday squeezed her hooves between her muzzle giving her the face one would make to a foal. “Aren’t you just the cutest thing to come into my kitchen? Did you smell something tasty? Did you? Yes, you did! Yes, you did!”
As a pony Rainbow would have had to show immense self control to not buck this pony into next week. Scootaloo’s relative or not. However, as a dog, she had no such luxury. Plus, there was hay bacon on the line! At this point Rainbow was willing to let Holiday baby talk and pet her all she wanted as long as she got a good portion of that hay bacon.
Knowing a bit of an act would seal the deal Rainbow jumped up and down, wagged her stubby tail and pranced in place.
Aunt Holiday laughed fondly at her little show “Oh, look at that, someone’s happy to see me!”
Rainbow gave her best doggy smile and let out a little bark. The bark was cute and high pitched. That oughta do it. Shows over. Now hoof over the goods, lady!
Aunt Holiday chuckled, “Okay, okay. But first, little miss, you’ve got to go outside and go potty. Don’t worry you’ll get your food. You need fattening up after all.”
Oh come on! I dance, you feed! That’s the deal!
Rainbow watched hungrily as Aunt Holiday scooped the sizzling hay bacon onto a plate. With a defeated huff she padded over to the backdoor. Holiday followed, opening it for her. Rainbow took a look outside and took a deep breath. The cool morning air was a stark contrast to the warm kitchen. She could hear the distant sounds of Ponyville waking up.
Stepping out onto the grass, Rainbow did her duty quickly and raced back inside. Funny thing about being a dog Rainbow found was that she could pee on command and not even feel the need unless she absolutely had to. Even then she had more to let out if she wanted. Like her bladder was more of a storage container than an essential organ. She’d have to ask Fluttershy about that sometime.
Back inside Rainbow found a large heap of hay bacon waiting for her. The sight of it had never been so inviting to her even if it was in a dog bowl. It was like the hay bacon was waving her over speaking in a seductive tone, ‘Take me, Rainbow Dash! Take me, I’m yours!’ Never one to deny her stomach Rainbow zipped straight to her bowl and took a large bite. The second the taste filled her mouth, Rainbow almost wanted to cry. She took another bite, this one even better than first. A third bite. Forget friendship! Hay bacon is the real magic!
Going for the fourth bite, Rainbow instead found an empty bowl. What! Where did the rest go? Whimpering, Rainbow looked left and right thinking she must have knocked some over. I couldn’t have eaten all of it! Could I? Apparently, I did but I need more! I’m still hungry! Rainbow looked up at Aunt Holiday who was busy cooking more breakfast for the others. Rainbow put on what she hoped to be a charming smile and trotted on over. Pegasus or dog no one can resist my charm!
Upon looking down on Rainbow Aunt Holiday only burst out laughing at the silly face Rainbow had going on, “Oh, Storm! Your face! You look ridiculous!”
That was not the reaction she was looking for.
“More?” Aunt Holiday exclaimed, holding back her laughter. “But you just had a whole plate of it! You’re such a greedy little puppy!”
Rainbow's ears drooped and she gave her best puppy-dog eyes, hoping it would work. It had always worked for Winona, but apparently, it didn’t hold the same charm on Aunt Holiday. She just chuckled and returned to her cooking. Rainbow knew she had to be more persuasive. She trotted over to her bowl and nudged it with her nose, making it scrape against the floor dramatically.
“Oh, alright. You win, little miss greedy. But just a little more, okay?” Aunt Holiday said, scooping up another helping of hay bacon.
Rainbow felt a spark of joy and sat up eagerly, her tail swishing against the floor. As the food was placed before her, she realized that maybe she had overdone it. The smell was overpowering, and her stomach was already feeling a bit queasy.
Hunger won out, and she took another bite, savoring the flavor before it all went downhill. The fourth bite was the tipping point. Her stomach churned, and she realized she had made a mistake. Rainbow felt sick. So sick she couldn’t even enjoy the awesome hay bacon. She looked up at Aunt Holiday with wide eyes, trying to convey her distress.
“What’s wrong, Storm?” Scootaloo rushed over, noticing Rainbow’s discomfort.
Rainbow whined and licked her lips, trying to find a way to explain without words. She didn’t want to cause trouble for Scootaloo or worry her. But her stomach was insisting she do something.
Friendship, we are pleased to announce you are hereby reinstated as the best thing to happen to Rainbow Dash. Hay bacon, back of the line.
“You okay, girl?” Scootaloo asked, placing a hoof on Rainbow’s back.
Rainbow’s response was the unmistakable sound to any dog owner. Starting up a multitude of dry heaves, Scootaloo and Aunt Holiday knew full well what was coming.
“Oh, dear, I should have known this would happen,” Aunt Holiday said, her caring smile replaced by a look of regret.
“No, Storm!” Scootaloo cried. “Outside! Throw up outside!”
Rainbow looked around frantically, in her panic she had forgotten where the backdoor was. In her haste she did remember another place she could go. Knocking over a chair in the process, she ran to the bathroom. Rainbow had never felt this desperate to throw up in her life. It was as if she had swallowed a tornado.
Making it just in time she threw herself at the toilet bowl and let it all out. Hay bacon pieces flying everywhere. Rainbow had never felt so relieved and ashamed at the same time. With one more launch of perfectly good hay bacon gone down the drain, she began to feel so much better. Falling back to the floor she found herself caught in Scootaloo’s hooves.
“You’re okay, Storm, you’re okay,” Scootaloo comforted her, stroking her back.
Rainbow looked up to see the concern in her sister’s eyes and felt a wave of guilt. She was doing a terrible job of this puppy gig. She needed to stop making Scootaloo worry about her so much. She had to do better.
“How’d you know to puke in the toilet?”
Rainbow looked up at Scootaloo trying to appear like it was a natural thing for a dog to know to go throw up in the toilet. She had no idea how to explain her innate pony knowledge manifesting in her dog body. It was just something she knew she had to do. It was like her body had a manual override button for pony instincts in a dog’s body. She hoped Scootaloo wouldn’t make a big deal out of it.
“Well, Fluttershy did say Dobermans are exceptionally smart,” Scootaloo said to herself, shrugging it off. “Guess I got the smartest Doberman alive! Awesome!”
Thank you, Fluttershy.
After a proper breakfast of dog kibble, (which didn’t taste as bad as the kibble from the shelter) and a lot of cooing apologies from Aunt Holiday, Scootaloo announced she had to go meet up with her friends for a meeting at the clubhouse. Naturally, Rainbow assumed she would be joining her so she waited by the door until Scootaloo came up with her scooter. The look on her face told Rainbow this wasn’t going to go as expected.
“You can’t come with me, Storm,” Scootaloo said as she put on her helmet.
Rainbow’s ears fell. What? Why not?
Rainbow whined, trying her best imitation of a canine version of Rarity.
“I know you want to come, but I got other things to do today and I can’t watch you every single minute. Soon as you’re properly trained you can come a lot more. Until then,” Scootaloo moved for the door. “You can stay with Auntie Holiday.”
Rainbow slowly looked back to see Aunt Holiday standing there with a smile so sweet it could give her diabetes. Rainbow swiftly turned her head back to Scootaloo.
No, Scoots! Don’t leave me here with her! Rainbow bit down on Scootaloo’s tail. Scoots, don’t! She’s gonna torture me with the baby talk! Scootaloo, no!
Auntie Holiday meant well, Rainbow knew that. But there was only so much she could take from all the gooey, smoochie voice. A whole day with that would drive her insane.
Scootaloo giggled. “Oh, Storm, you’re such a goofball! I won’t be gone that long.”
“Why don’t you take her with you and have her wait for you at the farm?” Auntie Lofty said, now standing beside Holiday who looked a little betrayed.
“Oh! Yeah! That’s a great idea!” Scootaloo took Storm’s leash off the hook. “She’ll love it on the farm!”
Rainbow’s eyes lit up at the mention of the farm. Those two words meant Applejack would most likely be there too! Despite being unable to communicate with her it would still be great to see another one of her old friends.
“Come on, let’s go, Storm!” Scootaloo said, pulling Rainbow to the door. Rainbow didn’t need much encouragement. She bolted out the door and ran beside Scootaloo down the path to Sweet Apple Acres.
The feeling of the wind on her face and the dirt under her paws was exhilarating. Rainbow had never felt so free since her transformation. Running beside Scootaloo, her eyes sparkled with joy. For a brief moment she forgot her troubles and felt alive again. Ponyville was a blur of colors as they raced towards the farm. It could never rival with flying but it was nice.
They arrived at Sweet Apple Acres and Rainbow took a moment to take it all in. The smell of apples in the air, the sound of birds chirping, and the sight of the sprawling orchard brought a sense of peace to her heart. A peace she hadn’t felt in what felt like ages. Rainbow was about to run off to find Applejack when she remembered she was still leashed to Scootaloo. She couldn’t just run off again. Scootaloo would probably never trust to let her off the leash outdoors.
As they approached the barn, Rainbow saw a flash of orange. Her heart skipped a beat. It was Applejack! Rainbow's eyes widened and she gave a loud bark to get her attention. Scootaloo helped by calling out, “Applejack! Hey, Applejack!”
Applejack looked over from her work, her expression unreadable. Rainbow knew she couldn’t just go bounding over to her like she used to. This was a whole new ball game. Applejack’s eyes landed on Rainbow and for a moment she just stared. Rainbow had no idea what she was thinking. Then she gave them both a smile.
“Well, howdy there, Scoots. Who’s this here doggy?” Applejack asked, her voice as warm and welcoming as ever.
Scootaloo looked down at Rainbow, a hint of excitement in her eyes. “This is my new dog Storm. She comes all the way from Trottingham. I adopted her when vacationing with my mom and uncle. I thought maybe she could hang out here while I’m at the clubhouse. Do you think that’s okay?”
Applejack took a step closer, her focus on Rainbow. “I'm not so sure that’s a good idea, Scootaloo. I can see a fire in her eyes that not even a storm cloud could extinguish. I don’t want her scaring the cows or anythin’.”
“Don’t worry, Applejack. I promise she’ll behave. She’s a real good dog and really smart, right, Storm?” Scootaloo said, looking at Rainbow.
Rainbow stood up straight and gave her full attention to Applejack trying to show she would listen. Anything to be around her best friend again.
“That so?” Applejack stood in front of Rainbow, eyeing her skeptically. “Won’t mind if I take a look at her then. Storm, sit.”
Time came to a halt for a Rainbow Dash. Just who do you think you are, AJ? Where do you get off at talking to me like some- oh, wait. Hold on… okay but still! The nerve!
Letting Scootaloo give Rainbow commands was a hard enough pill to swallow. She only gave in to Scootaloo, because she was a special case. A very special case. Giving control over to Applejack, her number one rival and friend was entirely different. It felt like by obeying the command it meant Rainbow was conceding to the rivalry. That Applejack was the better pony. Then a thought occurred to Rainbow. Maybe I can have some fun with this. Alright, AJ you want me to sit? I’ll sit; among other things.
Showing compliance Rainbow sat before AJ appearing as innocent as she could be. Applejack seemed satisfied but before she could acknowledge it Rainbow suddenly laid down, rolled over back and forth, and went to play dead. Her tongue lolled out of her mouth, eyes wide open staring up at the sky.
Applejack's expression went from skeptical to bemused to flat out annoyed. Storm had gone full show-pony on her. “Cute, real cute, Storm. Let’s try this again. Storm, sit!”
With a dramatic huff, Rainbow rolled onto her stomach and pushed herself up with her paws. It was so satisfying to see the look on her face. This was the best kind of fun messing with Applejack like this. Rainbow had missed their banter and competition against one another.
“That’s better!” Applejack said, nodding her approval. “Now give me a paw.”
Rainbow looked up at Applejack with a glint of mischief in her eyes. She knew exactly what Applejack was referring to, but she had other plans. Quickly, she turned around and offered her hind leg, sticking it up in the air as if she were a well-trained dog waiting for a treat. Applejack’s mouth dropped open. Well, you didn’t specify which paw you wanted , Rainbow thought smugly.
Scootaloo couldn’t contain her giggles anymore. She watched as Applejack’s jaw tightened, trying to keep a calm face. Rainbow knew she had her. Now it was time to be more tame before Applejack kicked her off the farm. Putting her hind leg back down, she faced her orange friend again and playfully nudged her on the leg.
It took Applejack a second before the chuckle escaped her. Even as a dog I still got my awesomeness.
“Alright, alright, she’s clever. I’ll give ya that. I guess I can watch her. Even if she is a bit of a troublemaker,” Applejack looked at her dubiously then an idea came to mind. “Ya know, now that I think about it, Storm would do perfect on using her energy and sharp mind for an exhibition dog show. Provided she decides not to be such a little joker,” she added, still a little miffed a dog played her.
What’s an exhibition dog show?
“What’s an exhibition dog show?” Scootaloo asked, confused as Rainbow Dash was.
Applejack leaned down and petted Rainbow’s head, her expression growing a bit more serious. “It’s a competition where dogs show off their obedience, agility and tricks, sugarcube. It’s a chance for them to shine and show everyone what they’re made of. It’s a bit like a talent show for ponies, but with dogs instead. Me and Winona used to enter them every year. And I reckon with the kind of smarts and determination Storm could be a real showstopper!”
Huh?!
Scootaloo’s was ecstatic. “Really? That sounds so awesome! Can we train for it, Applejack? Could you teach me?”
Dozens, possibly hundreds of ponies watching me, Rainbow Dash, do dog tricks? No! Not happening! That is crossing the line! I know I’m all about competition but that is downright degrading!
“Well, I guess if we start training her now she might have a shot at being qualified to enter this year’s show. It’s about 4 months away I think. It’s been some time since my last one.”
Applejack, I swear to Celestia I’m gonna sneak into your house and wet your bed in your sleep! How’d you like that, huh?
“Great! Can we start training now?”
“Whoa, slow down there, Scootaloo. I have a full day of work ahead of me and don’t you have a meeting to get to?”
Scootaloo gasped. “Oh no, I’m gonna be late! Storm, stay here with Applejack and be good!” She gave Storm a quick hug and an unexpected kiss on her forehead and sped off on her scooter. “I’ll see you soon, girl!”
Rainbow watched Scootaloo go, resisting the urge to follow after her. As much as she was happy to spend time with AJ she suddenly wasn’t feeling too enthusiastic about hanging out with the pony that sentenced her to compete in a dog show.
“Well, looks like it’s just you and me today, partner! Come on, you can keep me company in the orchard.”
Applejack’s words didn’t exactly thrill Rainbow Dash. Times when she was feeling this upset a good fly through the skies would calm her down, not trotting through rows of apple trees. However, the sight of the orchard brought back some fond memories of the times she had with Applejack. For now, Rainbow decided to push aside her pride for now and enjoy the company of her friend, even if it was under these peculiar circumstances.
I’ll get her back for this someday. Maybe I’ll let one go in front of Granny Smith and let AJ get the blame
Letting out a frustrated huff,Rainbow Dash permitted Applejack to lead her into the orchard. The scent of the ripe apples was very inviting to her nostrils. Are dogs allowed to eat apples? Because I could really go for one right now.
Applejack began her work, filling a basket with the fruits of her labor. Rainbow watched her friend grateful to be in her company but was getting bored rather quickly. She had no idea what was so thrilling about picking apples. Rainbow could see the orchard was in good shape. The trees looked healthy and the apples looked as ripe as the day she had to help Applejack and her family harvest them. Rainbow sighed, missing the days when she could just fly around and help.
Then a sudden challenge appeared to Rainbow in the shape of an apple. Caught snugly in between the branches that no bucking could shake down was a juicy, red apple. The tree wasn’t that tall. Perhaps she could get that one apple? The need for a challenge was too much to resist. Eyes narrowed, Rainbow imagined that the apple was laughing at her. Mocking her short frame. She was going to make that apple very sorry for ever sprouting out of the branches.
Rainbow took a running start and leaped up at the tree. Applejack watched in amazement as the dog shot into the air like a rocket. Rainbow’s muzzle reached out and barely managed to graze the apple with her sharp teeth. After a few more attempts Applejack was glancing over her shoulder more and more at Rainbow’s antics.
“What’s gotten into ya, girl?”
Rainbow landed on her paws, looking slightly defeated. She glanced back at the apple and took a deep breath, ready to give it another go. She could feel Applejack’s eyes on her now, watching curiously. Rainbow knew she had to make this look good. With a fierce determination, she took a running leap and this time she managed to bite the apple clean off from the tree. It snapped into her mouth with a satisfying crunch. Rainbow looked over at Applejack with pride, tail wagging, apple in her mouth.
Behold! The spoils of my victory!
“Well, I’ll be. Never would’ve thought you had that kind of jump in ya, Storm,” Applejack said with a chuckle, setting down her basket. Rainbow spit out the apple and looked up at her friend expectantly. Applejack just nodded with a smirk. “You go ahead and enjoy that. You certainly earned it. Wonder what other tricks you got?”
Getting the go ahead that dogs can eat apples Rainbow chomped down on her prize. It was much easier to chew as a dog, interestingly enough. The apple juice dripping down was a pleasant bonus. As she swallowed, Rainbow mulled over Applejack’s words. When she was a pony she had all kinds of tricks in her bag. Now as a dog she could make new tricks. Tricks a regular dog could never do. It may end up encouraging Scootaloo to want to have her compete in a dog show but she could worry about resisting that crazy idea later.
For now, Rainbow’s mind was racing with ideas. With her new canine body she could combine her old Pegasus moves and speed with the agility of a dog. She looked around the orchard and the trees began to look less like a place for apples and more like a playground. The lower branches looked like bars for her to scramble up to. A high apple could be her target and reward. Dogs weren’t known for climbing trees but this one was for sure going to make it happen. The trunks could be used as obstacles to weave around. Rainbow’s eyes sparkled with excitement.
Yeah… I can make this work.
Feeling no need for Applejack’s permission, Rainbow Dash took off. She sprinted around the trees, her paws barely touching the ground. She knew that if she was going to prove she was more than just a regular dog she had to show off. Rainbow had always loved parkour and she was pretty good at it. Now she had four agile legs to work with.
Weaving around from tree to tree, Rainbow felt a thrill she hadn’t felt since flying. Her muscles burned in the best way possible as she pushed herself to jump higher and further. Each leap was a declaration of her superiority over the fruit that once taunted her. Applejack watched in amazement as Rainbow sped through the orchard, clearing branches with graceful bounds. Rainbow had always had a flair for the dramatic. It seemed that hadn’t changed.
Applejack had actually paused in her work to watch Storm go. This wasn’t just a clever trick or some random stroke of luck. This was a full-blown parkour routine. It was like watching a little tornado bounce through her trees. Scootaloo, you sure got one impressive pooch, Applejack thought to herself.
“Alright, settle down now, girl,” Applejack said with a grin, cutting into her path. “You’ll burn yourself out and I’ll have to carry you back home.”
Rainbow Dash came to a screech halt in front Applejack and gave her a playful bark. It was good to know that a big part of her was still alive and well. Rainbow carelessly wagged her tail, feeling the thrill of the chase and the joy of pushing her limits once more. It was a small victory but it was something.
“You have a lot of heart. Just like my Winona did!” Applejack said proudly, picking up her basket again.
‘Did?’ Did Winona pass? Rainbow Dash came to know Winona when she was about five years old. Did an accident occur on the farm or did Winona pass naturally? The question she asked Fluttershy last night came to the front of her mind. How long have I been gone? Do I even want to know? Not right at this moment but soon.
They continued their day in the orchard, Rainbow occasionally showing off her newfound skills. She always had a way of making any situation interesting. Even if it meant turning a simple day of apple picking into an acrobatic show. Always the best at making the best out of a bad situation. The shelter in Trottingham made her forget that.
As the day went on, Rainbow felt a strange sense of belonging in her new role. It wasn’t flying, but it was something she could do, something that was uniquely hers. And if it meant getting to spend time with her friends, even in a roundabout way, then maybe this wasn’t such a bad gig after all. But deep down, she knew she couldn’t ignore the reality of her situation forever. The looming shadow of the talk she needed to have with Fluttershy hung over her like a dark cloud. Rainbow Dash needed to know the truth. Then have Twilight find a way to fix this mess.
In the meantime, Rainbow Dash had Applejack’s attention, and she was going to make the most of it. As the sun reached its peak, Applejack called for lunch. Rainbow’s stomach rumbled in anticipation. What kind of dog food did they serve here? Applejack’s cooking was always the best, but she wasn’t sure if she would be served the usual apple treats.
They sat under a big, shady apple tree with a basket of sandwiches. Rainbow was pleased to see Applejack pull out food she used to enjoy as a pony: Carrots and broccoli. Applejack tossed a full carrot to her, and Rainbow caught it mid-air, her reflexes still sharp despite her new form. Applejack smiled and laid her a plate of broccoli. It was a simple meal, but Rainbow greatly appreciated it.
“Ya know, Storm. I’m actually glad Scootaloo asked me to hang out with you today. When I first saw that fiery look in your eyes I could’ve sworn you were someone I used to know in a dog suit. You’re actually a lot like her. She was never a fan of dogs but I think she’d love to have you.”
Rainbow Dash suddenly was no longer interested in finishing her meal. Her focus was now solely on Applejack, internally begging for her to go on.
“She was a great pony. A great friend. Stubborn as a mule!”
Rainbow’s ears flattened giving Applejack a dark look. You’re no Mare Theresa yourself, AJ!
Applejack let out a soft sigh as she started to pet Rainbow on the back. “I still miss her to this day. I keep looking up at my trees expecting to see her napping in one of my trees. I don’t think I’ll ever get over what happened to her. Not so sure I want to. Her name was Rainbow Dash."
Hearing her real name be used made Rainbow stand up and brought her muzzle close to her unsuspecting friend. AJ just spit it out! What. Happened?!
Applejack didn’t seem to notice how she and Storm were practically nose to nose now.
“I suppose maybe it’s time I get a puppy myself to fill the void in my heart like Scootaloo has. I think I need a dog like you, Storm. Of course, I don’t think any dog could live up to Winona's name.”
Aaannnnd there goes my answers.
“Speaking of puppies. I bet plenty of ponies will be wanting to breed you with their studs once they see you in action,” Applejack said slyly, giving her a small wink. “Once you’re good and ready I’ll bet you’ll make one heck of a momma.”
If dogs could blush Rainbow’s face would have caught fire. If she could talk at that very moment she would have no idea what to say. Studs? Breed? Good and ready? Momma?
Way to kill the moment, AJ! You can definitely expect a little break into your bedroom tonight; along with a chewed up hat!

Holy smokes... if you're still reading this from the beginning I thank you. Really it means a lot if you do enjoy the story. This chapter drained me so I'll be taking a bit of a break. And by break I mean I gotta do some chores.
You may have noticed I changed the title from My Little Storm to the current one. It just felt kinda lazy to slap that title on. I know this one is just as lazy but I think its suited better.
I figured I dropped the ball on the Fluttershy I chapter. I wanted to end it on a cliffhanger but then the continuation of it was short. So to make up for it I unleashed what I had to make this chapter the longest yet.
As I said this was intended to be a really short story but then, well this happened. Even though I'm writing this story I'm in the dark with you on knowing how it will end. Happy like Past Sins? Or Sad like My Little Dashie? I really can't say. But I'll tell you this: Storm- I mean Rainbow Dash is gonna have that promised chat with Fluttershy in the next chapter. The great mystery soon revealed!

I really need to stop posting here what my plans are and what's gonna happen next. This was supposed to be the big reveal chapter but then a comment was made how this story is funny. That word: funny. It inspired this chapter and I just had to write it out. Also, the intended chapter was DARK. Too dark, so I scrapped it. I’m keeping the plot line just not the gruesome details.

Dressing in Style
A full week had passed since Rainbow Dash reconnected with Fluttershy. A whole week and the only couple of times she was able to see her again was when Scootaloo was walking near her cottage. Scootaloo wasn’t keen on walking by every time to see Fluttershy but Storm had been rather insistent. Every time it was the same thing: Rainbow would ask hopefully if they could finally have their private talk, Fluttershy would only discreetly shake her head as she whispered back, ‘Soon.’ or ‘Just a little longer.’
Now Rainbow was getting seriously impatient. She couldn’t shake the feeling she was being toyed with. Why wouldn’t Fluttershy just tell her what she wanted her to know so they could then get Twilight to put everything right? Just what was the holdup? That outburst Rainbow unleashed on Fluttershy had broken both their hearts but the temptation to lash out again was beginning to grow. While she was happy to see Scootaloo happy, Applejack had informed them both yesterday she was able to pull out all the necessary equipment for exhibition training and they could start tomorrow. In a way Rainbow was glad she could have something other to do with Scootaloo other than walk, cuddle and catch frisbees (something she was terrible at). The problem was she had no intention of entering this dog show. She was not going to spend the next four months as a pet. Over my dead body , Rainbow told herself. I’ll be back in the skies by then… Right?
Yesterday’s day on the farm had Rainbow feeling ragged. She slept through the night and didn’t wake up until it was nearly noon. She would have stayed asleep longer if Scootaloo hadn’t forced her to get up for their daily walk. This Doberman puppy body getting its mandatory exercise was still something Rainbow was adjusting too.
Whilst on their walk Sweetie Belle and Applebloom ran into them asking Scootalo if she wanted to have lunch at Sugarcube Corner. Rainbow thought how great it would be to possibly run into Pinkie Pie. No doubt Pinkie would say or do something that would make her laugh. What fond memories she had of her hyperactive friend. Even if Pinkie wasn’t there right now the smell of the bakery would be a treat to her sense of smell. Yeah, Scoots! Let’s go to Sugarcube Corner!
“I’d love to join you guys, but…”
But what?
Scootaloo unnecessarily tightened Storm’s leash. It was as if she thought Storm was gonna try and run away from what she was going to say next. Was she?
“I don’t want to make Storm wait outside too long. She’s still new to Ponyville after all. I should really take her home first.”
What? Take me back home to the cootie demon?
“Aw, but y’all live across town and Ah gotta get back to the stall soon. My lunch break is only for an hour!” Applebloom whined.
Sweet Celestia, help these poor foals! My weather job only gave me a half hour break. Then only a twenty minute break during a show with the Bolts. I know it’s a lot coming from me but kids these days are lazy!
“Ooh! I got an idea! We can drop off Storm at my sister’s!” Sweetie Belle said excitedly. “It’s not far from Sugarcube Corner!”
Rainbow made a huff that almost sounded like a laugh. Rarity was absolutely terrified of mean-looking dog breeds. As much as it would be cool to see Rare’s, there is no way in Tartarus she’ll let me hang out in her shop. I bet she’ll take one look at me and scream ‘Rabid dog!’ Heh, I remember that one time when she told the story of a customer that thought it would be okay to bring their Pitbull in the shop. Classic Rarity!
“Um… isn’t Rarity scared of dogs like Storm?” Scootaloo asked, giving her a concerned look.
“She’s up in Canterlot right now. Something about business or whatnot,” Sweetie Bell said with a wave of her hoof. “We all know how well behaved Storm is so I see no reason she can’t wait there for a little while.”
“I guess that’ll be okay then. Let’s go!”
Saved from the cootie demon to be sent to the frilly dungeon. Yay me.
And that was how Rainbow ended up napping on Rarity’s drama couch. It would have been nice to see Pinkie but on the bright side she did need to catch up on her sleep. When she woke up, however, she found herself alone surrounded by frou frou dresses. Not knowing how long she slept made her more frustrated. At least Scootaloo had the decency to leave the radio on for her so it wasn’t dead quiet.
But the music was doing little to ease her mind. Rainbow’s eyes scanned the room, looking for any sign of distraction. That’s when she saw it. The mannequin in the corner dressed in a tacky pink ball gown. Rainbow Dash had to admit that even though it was a bit extra it was pretty. It reminded her of the days when she and the rest of the Mane 6 would go all out to the Gala. Rainbow took an uncertain step closer to the mannequin, her curiosity creeping up on her. It had been a long time since she wore clothes, her Wonderbolts bomber jacket especially. It was her favourite thing to wear. It had to be the coolest thing she ever wore in her life, and it kept her warm during the winter practices.
It is rather cold in here… I mean it’s not like I want to wear the dress. It wouldn’t fit me properly anyway. An icy chill ran down Rainbow’s spine that had nothing to do with the temperature. She immediately backed away from the dress. No way! Uh-uh! I am not putting on that frilly pink nightmare! … Smells nice, though.
The smell of an elegant perfume was wafting off the dress. Rainbow took this as an excuse for herself to return to the dress. It smelt just like the roses fans would throw to the team during Wonderbolt performances. Those sure were the days.
Giving a nervous glance left and right several times over, Rainbow brought her front paws on the mannequin and gently used her teeth to pull the dress off. I’m only doing this because it’s cold and it smells of better times, Rainbow told herself but she couldn’t exactly convince herself of that statement. It took a couple tries to navigate her way into the dress. It was three times as big as her and the silky fabric kept sliding off her paws.
Finally, after a few moments of struggle, Rainbow managed to pull the dress over her head. The fabric was heavier than she thought it would be and it was surprisingly warm. The material clung to her fur in places it shouldn’t. Rainbow took a couple steps back and looked into the full-length mirror across the room.
Seeing the Doberman puppy in the mirror wearing an oversized dress Rainbow actually forgot it was her for the moment. At first she saw a little sadness in the puppy’s eyes that made her feel bad for the poor girl. Those adorable brown eyes had no business looking like that. She wanted to comfort the puppy. Tell her she was a good dog and there was no reason to be scared. Then her eyes locked onto the pink abomination she was wearing and Rainbow made a barking laugh. The sight of the big bad Doberman puppy wearing such a horrid dress was so hilarious! No wonder that pup is sad! I would feel the same way in her situation!
Rainbow’s laugh turned into a full-blown roll on the floor laugh fest. Her body was shaking as she couldn’t believe she was doing this. The dress was so big it looked like a pink blob that swallowed a puppy whole. Her paws flailed about in the air as she rolled around on the floor. It was like she was a pony again. Free to laugh without a care in the world. Free from the worries of being stuck in a dog’s body and free from the stress of it all.
The boutique’s door suddenly swung open and Rainbow’s laughter abruptly stopped. She saw an all too familiar pair of piercing blue eyes staring directly at her.
Rarity stared at the Doberman puppy completely speechless. Rainbow stared back at the unicorn rooted to the spot suddenly feeling the weight of being a dog brought back onto her. A dog that was wearing one of Rarity’s dresses, getting dog hair all over it.
The white unicorn’s eye twitched.
“Just. What. Do. You. Think. You’re. Doing? In my dress!?”
Rarity’s voice was a mix of shock and horror. Rainbow Dash, retreated into the oversized pink dress, scrambling to hide underneath its folds. Oh my gosh! Rarity is going to skin me alive! Save me, Scootaloo!
“Oh, no, you don't!” Rarity stomped over to the cowering puppy. “I demand you come out of there this instant! While I’m pleased to see a brute such as yourself taking an interest in fashion, this dress is simply not for you! I would need your measurements first before we even begin fitting a dress on you!”
Say what now?
Rarity grabbed the dress with both her magic and began to shake it vigorously. Rainbow’s eyes went wide and she braced herself for the worst. She had seen Rarity in a tizzy before but she had never been the direct cause of it. Rainbow felt the fabric loosen around her and began to slide out of the dress.
Catching Rainbow with a hoof before she hit the floor, Rarity stretched her hooves out with Rainbow trapped between them. Now face to face with the furious Fashionista, Rainbow struggled to keep her bladder in check, unlike the other night when she snuck out of the house to ‘visit’ AJ in her sleep. The little Doberman was more than ‘good’ at holding it and was born ‘ready’ to let it all go. Now she’d be lucky to keep her other assets from breaching.
“Well?” Rarity exclaimed, bringing Rainbow close to her muzzle. “What do you have to say for yourself?”
Before she knew what she was doing Rainbow found herself licking Rarity’s nose. She didn’t know why was doing it. Only that something told her it might get her out of this mess and her body went with it.
Rarity’s eyes went wide with shock, the dress momentarily forgotten. Then against all odds, Rarity cracked a tiny smile.
Wait, is this whole licking thing working?
Then Rarity’s cross look resumed as she held Rainbow away from her again.
“Ooooh no! Don’t you try and butter me up now! I’m afraid you’re still in big trouble for your little shopping spree!” Rarity set Rainbow down on the floor and picked up the now wrinkled dress. “This is going straight to dry cleaning.”
Rainbow’s ears drooped. She had no idea how she was getting out of this without Scootaloo. She just wanted to get warm. Rainbow looked up at Rarity with her puppy dog eyes hoping she’d show some leniency. Rarity’s expression softened slightly but she was still clearly upset. Rainbow felt a pang of regret. It wasn’t like her to upset other ponies, especially for someone she cared about. But how could she explain she was actually Rainbow Dash? There was no way.
With a heavy sigh Rarity tossed the dress into a laundry chute and came straight back to Rainbow Dash.
“Now let’s see who I have to thank for the trouble.”
Rainbow Dash winced as Rarity flung out a hoof. At first Rainbow believed Rarity was going to strike her but it turned out she was studying the tag she bore on her collar.
“Of course!” Rarity scoffed, letting the tag drop. “Who else would think it would be appropriate to turn my home into a dog pound? Sweetie Belle, you and I are going to have words!”
Rainbow was a little relieved to know she wasn’t going to get the sharp end of the stick in this situation. She could only hope Scootaloo would get back soon before Rarity called the pound to come take her away. Rainbow couldn’t comprehend the idea of going back to a shelter. She knew Scootaloo would be there in a wingbeat to bail her out but she couldn’t face such a place again. Never again.
For the next several minutes Rarity paced back and forth sweeping all the dog hair and dirt Rainbow tracked on the floor. At least that’s what she thought she was doing. Maybe Rarity had bionic sight because Rainbow was positive she didn’t shed that much to warrant a deep clean. All she could do now was sit tight and try not to give Rarity a reason to snap.
By the time Rarity brought out the mop and bucket, still muttering to herself, she suddenly stopped as she saw something out the window. Or someone. Rarity gasped and ran out the door calling out, ”Fluttershy! Fluttershy, will you please come here, darling? I’m in dire need of your help!”
Rainbow Dash was saved! She didn’t dare move as Rarity left the door open for Fluttershy to trot in, looking around the room before spotting Rainbow sitting by the mirrors.
“Oh! I see you met, Storm.” Fluttershy’s gentle voice was music to Rainbow’s ears.
“A ‘Storm’ of trouble is what she is! I just arrived home from a long journey and I came back to find this ruffian wearing one of my dresses!”
Fluttershy gave Rainbow Dash a confused look that easily said, ‘You were doing what?’ Rainbow could only look away in shame. She did not want to talk about it. If Rainbow had her way they would never speak of this again.
“Well, I’m sure she didn’t mean any harm,” Fluttershy said, patting Rainbow on the head, giving her a knowing look. “After all, what good girl doesn’t want to look pretty now and then?”
“Fluttershy!” Rainbow snapped, still refusing to look at her. “Can we just go?”
Rainbow would rather have Fluttershy tell Rarity the truth about who she really was but under these circumstances, all Rainbow wanted was to forget this ever happened.
“She can dress up herself in all the dresses I have as long as it’s bought and paid for. Now seeing she doesn’t have the necessary funds I’d really appreciate if she were removed from my shop. I’ll be sure to let Scootaloo know where this ‘Storm’ is when she comes back.”
“Rarity, I know you just met her but don't be too hard on Storm,” Fluttershy spoke with a bit of a bite in her voice. “She’s been through a lot. Now would you please say something nice to her before she goes? I know she would greatly appreciate it.”
Rarity looked a little surprised on how much Fluttershy seemed to care for Storm. Everyone knew all animals were loved by the Pegasus but there was something about Storm that made Fluttershy more protective over her.
“Oh… I’m sorry, darling. I didn’t mean any offense to Storm. It’s just been a long day for me.”
“Tell that to Storm,” Fluttershy said assertively, pointing at Rainbow. “Not me.”
Another flicker of surprise crossed Rarity’s face. She looked down at Storm, who had her head down, and Rarity’s heart ached for the poor thing. There was something different about this puppy. It was like Storm could understand their conversation. Swallowing hard, Rarity leaned down and gently guided Storm’s muzzle to face her, but she kept her eyes averted.
“I’m sorry for my little outburst, Storm. I have had quite a long journey and to come home finding a dog of all things wearing one of my dresses was a bit more than I could handle. And I suppose you could have done a lot worse to my shop than trying on a dress. And you were quite the lady waiting as I cleaned up. You really are a good girl.”
Rarity’s words were intended for a dog she had just met but to Rainbow it meant so much to hear that from her. She may have never had a strong bond with Rarity. They were complete opposites after all. But Rarity was and always will be her best friend.
Unable to stop herself, Storm stepped forward and laid her head against Rarity’s. She tried to show a lot of meaning to the gesture and hoped Rarity would understand one day when she was Rainbow Dash again.
Rarity may not have fully understood Storm's plight but she could understand this puppy was in need of the love it desired. She gently stroked her back as Storm nuzzled her.
“I suppose this mishap can be our little secret,” Rarity straightened up, smiling. “Just make an appointment next time you want to spruce yourself up. I’m sure I can make you something more fitting to your size.”

Fluttershy nodded in understanding, clipping the leash onto Storm’s collar. Rainbow, still feeling a few shades embarrassed, followed her out of the boutique. The fresh air outside was a welcome change from the tension in Rarity's shop. They didn’t get far before Rainbow managed to gather up the courage to speak.
“Fluttershy, please. I can’t go on like this. I need to know. What happened to me? What happened to Scootaloo? Why can’t our friends know it’s me in here?”
Fluttershy showed no signs of hearing Rainbow Dash, and for a moment, she thought she was being ignored. Then Fluttershy took a deep breath and nodded.
“Okay. I’ll tell you.”
