Truths and Trust

“I could ask you the same thing,” he replied, a spark of amusement in his eyes.

“What do you mean?” Twilight inquired, her tone reflecting her confusion.

Sombra fixed his gaze on Twilight, a flicker of something deeper crossing his eyes, but he remained enigmatic, letting the question hang in the air like the stars above them. Of course, he retracted upon remembering the other Twilight from his world.

“Oh, nothing, forget it,” he said with a casual gesture, trying to steer the conversation away.

Twilight watched him closely, determined not to let him off the hook so easily. It was clear now that he was avoiding the question in a rather unsubtle way.

“No, seriously? What were you trying to say?” she pressed, her eyes full of curiosity.

Sombra blinked, choosing his words carefully as he blushed slightly. He knew Twilight wouldn’t let him be until he answered, so he began to ramble, searching for something to say to divert attention.

“Well, it’s just that…” he began, hesitating. “You’re… you’re incredible, Twilight. You always know what to do, you have a kindness and intelligence that… I really haven’t seen in anyone else.”

Twilight was taken aback, unable to believe what she was hearing. She hadn’t expected Sombra to say such things about her, especially when all she had done since his arrival was blame and scold him. Her face flushed, unable to hide her surprise and the emotion she felt.

“You’re brave and generous, and… and you have a way of making life a bit brighter,” Sombra continued, not realizing he was saying much more than he had intended. “And you hit hard, the first time we met. If I hadn’t been on guard, maybe you would have taken me out with that powerful magic…””

As he spoke, his words flowed like a sincere torrent, and although he tried to stop, he couldn’t. His eyes were fixed on Twilight’s, almost lost in her gaze.

“And you’re… you’re…” he said, trying to find the right words as his voice faded into a murmur. “You’re…”

Twilight looked at him with wide eyes, her cheeks even more flushed with emotion. When Sombra finished speaking, she was so stunned that she could barely respond.

“You—You’re a great friend, of course!” Sombra exclaimed, stammering as he realized he had said more than he had intended.

The blush on Sombra’s cheeks was evident, and his awkwardness only added an extra layer of endearment to the moment. However, for Twilight, the word “friend” evoked a deeper reaction.

“Friend?” she asked with a trembling voice, the echo of the word resonating in her ears.

Sombra, still blushing, realized what he had said and tried to regain his composure, though the flush on his cheeks did not disappear.

“Yes, uh, well, I said it because… we’re friends, right?” Sombra stammered, trying to regain control as his mind spun. He wondered why he was acting like a colt in puberty. “Or do you still not trust someone like me?”

Upon hearing this, Twilight shook off her thoughts, questioning why she was reacting this way. She wasn’t a child, and certainly not someone who would distrust him after all they had shared. Setting aside her feeling of unease, she moved a little closer, her gaze filled with longing and tenderness.

“Yes, of course… we’re friends,” Twilight said softly, taking his hoof with a warm smile. “I’m really glad to hear that…”

They sat in silence for a moment, the atmosphere charged with a mix of emotion and nervousness. Sombra questioned whether he had said too much, whether he had made a mistake in expressing his feelings.

Doubt overwhelmed him as he looked at Twilight, whose expression slowly shifted from a mix of surprise to one of determined concentration.

Finally, Twilight regained her usual attitude, the same one she had shown from the first day. With a resolute look, she turned to Sombra and stared at him intently.

“Alright, enough with the evasions,” she said, with the firm and authoritative tone Sombra knew so well. “You still haven’t answered my question. You can’t keep avoiding it forever.”

Sombra relaxed upon seeing Twilight’s familiar demeanor, and a smile spread across his face. The confidence and determination in her eyes immediately reassured him.

“Oh, right, of course,” Sombra said, trying to appear nonchalant, though his smile betrayed his relief. “I hadn’t noticed I was evading the question.”

Twilight looked at him clearly unwilling to let him off so easily. Sombra scratched his neck, trying to hide his amusement as he watched her.

“What can I say?” he continued, attempting to stay serious. “Maybe it’s just that you’re… the only pony capable of making me talk more than I should?”

Twilight raised an eyebrow, clearly dissatisfied with the answer, but Sombra’s small laugh and genuine smile seemed to ease the tension. Eventually, Twilight couldn’t help but smile as well, the atmosphere light and full of camaraderie.

“Better that way!” Twilight exclaimed. “Don’t expect me to give up easily.”

Sombra laughed and nodded, grateful for the familiarity of her behavior.

Sombra began to speak in a halting voice, searching for the right words while avoiding some parts of the story. He had no idea how to be honest with someone without ending up talking too much, and his confusion was evident in his words.

“Yes, well…,” he said, looking at Twilight seriously. “I once became… corrupted by power.”

He paused, searching for words while scratching his neck, clearly uncomfortable. Anxiety gripped him: what if Twilight was disappointed and told him he was just like the King Sombra from this reality? The thought pained him deeply.

“But, when… when I saw that I was hurting the ponies I once cared about, that… that broke me,” he continued, with palpable sincerity.

He stopped again, struggling with his emotions as the memory of his past seemed to weigh on him. His gaze drifted to the floor, as if trying to hide from the confession he had just made.

“I don’t know if… if that’s what you wanted to hear, but… yes, that’s part of who I am now.”

He looked up at Twilight, waiting for a reaction. She looked at him with understanding, her heart touched by his vulnerability. Although his way of speaking was awkward and halting, the sincerity in his words was undeniable.

“I understand,” Twilight said softly, with a warm smile reflecting her empathy. “Thank you for being honest with me.”

Sombra felt an immense relief at her response, the weight of uncertainty lifted by Twilight’s acceptance. Her smile gave him hope, confirming that, despite his mistakes and doubts, there was room for redemption and understanding.

“So, why do you dress so strangely?” Twilight broke the silence with a mischievous smile.

Sombra was surprised and responded with sarcasm:

“Strangely? What’s wrong with dressing elegantly? Maybe it’s your world’s sense of fashion that needs updating,” Sombra said, smiling. “Come on, let’s go inside and get some sleep before you get any more ideas about my style.”
