Blitz The Hedgehog: Adventures in Equestria
Prologue
Load Full StoryNext ChapterLocation: Everfree Forest, Outskirts of Ponyville
The Everfree Forest was a place of ancient magic and untamed nature, where the rules of the outside world held little sway. The dense canopy above cast long shadows over the ground, even in the early morning, and the air was thick with the scent of damp earth and wildflowers. Strange sounds echoed through the trees, from the distant calls of timberwolves to the whispering winds that seemed to carry voices of their own.
In a secluded part of the forest, far from the paths tread by the residents of Ponyville, something remarkable was stirring. The soft rustle of leaves announced the presence of a small, red figure hidden among the undergrowth. As the first light of dawn broke through the canopy, it revealed the creature—a tiny hedgehog, unlike any other in Equestria.
The baby hedgehog’s fur was a brilliant shade of crimson, as if it had been dipped in the very essence of a sunset. Its quills, though small and soft, shimmered with a metallic sheen, and two long quills extended gracefully down its back, almost like wings. The little one’s belly and muzzle were a gentle tan, contrasting with its vibrant red coat. It had a small, black nose and light blue eyes that shone with a mix of curiosity and fear.
The hedgehog had been born—or perhaps transported—to this world only moments ago. The specifics were unclear even to the creature itself. All it knew was that it was alone, and the dense, shadowy forest around it felt both strange and foreboding. With a tentative movement, it pushed itself up on its tiny feet and looked around.
The Everfree was not a place for a creature so small and fragile. The undergrowth was thick and tangled, and every shadow seemed to hide something dangerous. The baby hedgehog’s instincts told it to run, but it didn’t know where to go. It could hear the distant rustle of something large moving through the trees, and the cry of an unknown animal echoed somewhere far off. Fear gripped its tiny heart, and it began to shiver uncontrollably.
But then, something remarkable happened. A warm breeze blew through the clearing, carrying with it the sweet scent of apples, ripe and ready for harvest. It was a scent that spoke of safety, of comfort, and of home. The baby hedgehog sniffed the air, its tiny nose twitching, and a feeling of hope began to grow within it.
With a final glance at the dark forest around it, the hedgehog made a decision. It would follow that scent, wherever it led. Gathering what little courage it had, the tiny creature began to make its way through the underbrush, heading toward the promise of safety and warmth.
Location: Sweet Apple Acres, Ponyville
Meanwhile, just beyond the borders of the Everfree Forest, the Apple family was beginning their day at Sweet Apple Acres. The farm stretched out as far as the eye could see, with rows upon rows of apple trees heavy with fruit. The sound of birds singing in the trees mixed with the gentle rustling of leaves in the breeze, creating a peaceful, almost idyllic atmosphere.
Applejack, the family’s hardworking and dependable mare, was already up and about, as usual. She trotted through the orchard, her Stetson hat perched firmly on her head, and her gaze focused on the task ahead. Applebuck Season was in full swing, and that meant there was no time to waste.
“Alright, let’s get to work,” Applejack muttered to herself, positioning herself in front of a particularly large apple tree. She adjusted her stance, making sure her hooves were planted firmly in the ground. Then, with a practiced motion, she kicked out with her hind legs, delivering a powerful buck to the tree trunk.
The tree shook from the impact, and a cascade of apples fell into the baskets she had arranged around the base. Applejack grinned in satisfaction as she watched the fruit tumble down.
“Yeehaw! That’s what I like to see!” she exclaimed, already moving on to the next tree.
As Applejack continued her work, the sun rose higher in the sky, casting a warm golden light over the orchard. The scent of apples filled the air, mingling with the earthy aroma of the soil. It was a familiar, comforting smell, one that Applejack had known all her life.
But as she prepared to buck another tree, something caught her attention. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a small, red shape moving among the trees at the edge of the orchard. It was so small and so distant that she almost dismissed it as a trick of the light. But something about it seemed… unusual.
Applejack paused, lowering her legs and squinting in the direction of the movement. The shape was definitely moving, slowly but surely, and it was getting closer. It wasn’t a rabbit or a squirrel—those she could recognize easily. No, this was something else entirely.
Curiosity piqued, Applejack decided to investigate. She adjusted her hat, leaving the baskets of apples behind, and trotted toward the edge of the orchard. As she drew nearer, the shape became clearer, and what she saw made her eyes widen in surprise.
Location: The Edge of the Orchard, Sweet Apple Acres
There, on the ground, was the baby hedgehog. It was huddled near the base of a tree, trembling slightly as it looked around with wide, frightened eyes. Its small, red form stood out starkly against the green grass and brown earth, and its quills bristled with a nervous energy.
Applejack’s heart softened at the sight. The poor thing looked so scared, so lost. It didn’t belong out here, all alone. Slowly, carefully, Applejack approached, trying not to startle the little creature.
“Hey there, sugarcube,” Applejack said softly, her voice gentle and soothing. “Don’t be scared. I ain’t gonna hurt ya.”
The baby hedgehog flinched at the sound of her voice, its quills standing on end. It watched her warily, unsure of what to make of this large, unfamiliar pony. But there was something in Applejack’s tone, something kind and reassuring, that made the hedgehog hesitate. It didn’t run away.
Applejack crouched down, lowering herself to the hedgehog’s level. She extended a hoof toward it, keeping her movements slow and deliberate. “It’s okay, little fella. I’m here to help.”
The hedgehog sniffed the air cautiously, its tiny nose twitching as it caught Applejack’s scent. For a long moment, it simply stared at her, its light blue eyes full of uncertainty. But then, as though sensing that this pony meant no harm, the baby hedgehog took a tentative step forward.
Applejack held her breath as the little creature edged closer. It paused just before reaching her hoof, its tiny body trembling slightly. Then, with a sudden burst of courage, it scurried forward and pressed itself against her hoof, seeking warmth and comfort.
Applejack’s heart melted at the sight. The hedgehog was so small, so vulnerable. She could feel its tiny heartbeat through her hoof, fast and nervous, but gradually slowing as it began to calm down.
“Well, ain’t you just the cutest thing,” Applejack murmured, a smile spreading across her face. She gently scooped the hedgehog up in her hoof, cradling it carefully so as not to hurt it. The hedgehog curled up in her grasp, its quills soft and warm against her fur.
“Let’s get you back to the barn,” Applejack said, placing the hedgehog on her back. It nestled down into her fur, its eyes half-closing in contentment. “The family’s gonna wanna meet ya.”
Location: The Barn, Sweet Apple Acres
Back at the barn, the rest of the Apple family was busy with their morning chores. Big Macintosh, Applejack’s older brother, was hauling hay bales into the loft with his usual quiet efficiency. His powerful muscles rippled under his red coat as he worked, the sweat on his brow glistening in the sunlight.
Granny Smith, the family’s matriarch, was bustling about in the kitchen, preparing a fresh batch of apple pies. The smell of cinnamon and sugar wafted through the air, mingling with the scent of apples to create a mouthwatering aroma. Despite her age, Granny Smith moved with surprising speed and agility, her years of experience in the kitchen evident in every motion.
Apple Bloom, the youngest of the Apple siblings, was outside near the barn, practicing her apple-bucking technique on a smaller tree. The yellow filly had her eyes set on one particular branch, where a shiny red apple was just out of her reach.
“Almost… got it…” Apple Bloom muttered, her face scrunched up in concentration as she prepared to deliver a well-aimed kick.
“Hey, everypony!” Applejack called out as she trotted up to the barn, the little hedgehog still nestled on her back. “Y’all gotta see this!”
Apple Bloom’s kick missed its mark as she was distracted by Applejack’s call. The apple remained stubbornly attached to the branch, but Apple Bloom didn’t mind. Her sister’s excited tone had piqued her curiosity.
The rest of the Apple family gathered around as Applejack came to a stop near the barn. Big Macintosh wiped the sweat from his brow and leaned against one of the hay bales, while Granny Smith pushed open the kitchen door and stepped outside, a pie balanced expertly on her back.
“What in tarnation is that?” Granny Smith asked, adjusting her spectacles to get a better look at the tiny creature on Applejack’s back.
“It’s a hedgehog, Granny,” Applejack explained, carefully lifting the baby hedgehog off her back and holding it out for the others to see. “Found it out in the orchard, all by its lonesome. Poor thing looked like it was lost and scared. Figured we could take care of it.”
Big Macintosh frowned, his expression thoughtful. “Are ya sure that’s a good idea, AJ? We don’t know nothin’ about takin’ care of a critter like that. It could be wild, or maybe it belongs to somepony.”
“I know, Big Mac,” Applejack replied, nodding in agreement. “But I couldn’t just leave it out there alone. It’s just a baby. It needs us.”
Apple Bloom, who had been peering at the hedgehog with wide eyes, suddenly burst into an excited grin. “Oh, can we keep it, Applejack? Please, please, please? I’ll help take care of it, I promise!”
Granny Smith chuckled softly, her old eyes twinkling with amusement. “Well, I reckon it wouldn’t hurt to give the lil’ feller a home. What do ya think, AJ?”
Applejack looked down at the baby hedgehog, who was now fast asleep in her hoof, its tiny breaths soft and steady. The sight of the little creature, so peaceful and content, filled her with a warm sense of responsibility. She had found it, and now it was up to her to make sure it was safe.
“I think we should give him a name,” Applejack said, her voice soft but firm. “How about… Blitz? He seems like a speedy little critter, don’t ya think?”
“Blitz! I like it!” Apple Bloom cheered, hopping up and down with excitement. The name seemed to suit the hedgehog perfectly, given the way it had moved through the orchard earlier.
“Eeyup,” Big Mac agreed, nodding his approval. Despite his earlier reservations, he couldn’t deny that the little hedgehog had a certain charm.
Granny Smith smiled and patted Applejack’s shoulder. “Blitz it is, then. Welcome to the family, lil’ Blitz.”
As the Apple family gathered around, Blitz slept soundly, feeling safe and loved for the first time. Little did they know, this was just the beginning of many adventures to come.
Location: The Apple Family’s Living Room, Sweet Apple Acres
Later that evening, after all the chores were done and the sun had set, the Apple family gathered in their cozy living room. The room was warm and inviting, with a crackling fire in the hearth and the scent of freshly baked apple pie lingering in the air. The walls were adorned with family photos, each one telling a story of love, laughter, and hard work.
Blitz, now fully awake and much more relaxed, was nestled in a small basket that Applejack had lined with soft hay. The little hedgehog had already started to explore his new surroundings, scurrying around the basket with a surprising amount of energy. His light blue eyes sparkled with curiosity as he took in the sights and sounds of his new home.
Apple Bloom sat on the floor beside the basket, watching Blitz with a look of pure delight. She reached out a hoof, letting the hedgehog sniff it before gently stroking his soft fur. Blitz responded with a contented chirp, leaning into her touch.
“Look at him go!” Apple Bloom exclaimed, her eyes wide with wonder. “He’s so fast! I bet he could run circles around Winona.”
Applejack chuckled, settling down on the couch with a sigh of contentment. “He’s got a lotta spirit, that’s for sure. We’re gonna have our hooves full takin’ care of him, but I think it’ll be worth it.”
Big Macintosh, who was sitting in his favorite armchair, nodded in agreement. “Eeyup. He’s part of the family now.”
Granny Smith, who had been knitting by the fire, looked up and smiled. “Every family needs a lil’ excitement now and then. Keeps us on our toes.”
As the evening wore on, the Apple family continued to bond with their newest member. Blitz seemed to be growing more comfortable with each passing moment, his initial fear and uncertainty giving way to trust and affection. He had found a home, a place where he belonged.
But even as the Apple family laughed and played with their new friend, none of them could have predicted the adventures that lay ahead. For Blitz was no ordinary hedgehog, and his presence in Equestria would soon set off a chain of events that would take them all on a journey they would never forget.
