Shadows Of Astroloria
The Farm Princess
Previous ChapterNext ChapterThen for the next two long years, Luna diligently worked as an astronomer a passion of her she often did when time allowed for it, studying the stars and the secrets they held. Meanwhile, her niece Twilight grew into a precocious young girl with a thirst for knowledge. She practically devoured books on various subjects and absorbed information at an alarming rate.
On the day of her 7th birthday, while her mother Celestia and aunt Luna were busy preparing for her party, Twilight donned her favorite dress. It was a beautiful lavender color adorned with twinkling stars. With her mother's permission, she ventured out into the city but not without two guards by her side to ensure her safety.
As she strolled through the bustling city streets, many people stopped to greet her and wish her a happy birthday. But it wasn't until she stumbled upon the apple farm that she met someone who would become a dear friend. Applejack, a fair-skinned girl with long blonde hair tied in a ponytail, caught Twilight's eye as she kicked one of the trees on the farm. Her outfit consisted of an orange top with three red apples adorning the chest, blue daisy duke shorts, and sturdy brown boots. She exuded confidence and strength.
Just as Twilight was about to join Applejack, a tall figure appeared - her older brother Big Mac. He reminded Applejack that she was still too young for such activities. Unfazed, Twilight hopped over the fence surrounding the farm and approached them.
This unexpected action caused some concern from her guards, but the senior guard reassured his junior that Twilight was fine on her own. After all, with a guard escorting her, there was no doubt that everyone knew who she was anyway. Applejack and her brother bowed respectfully as Twilight approached, but she immediately told them to stand up.
"Please, don't bow," Twilight said, her voice soft but firm. "I'm just here to make friends."
Applejack straightened up, a curious glint in her emerald eyes. "Friends? With us farm folk?" She exchanged a glance with Big Mac, who merely shrugged.
Twilight nodded eagerly. "Of course! I've read all about apple farming in my books, but I've never seen it up close. Would you mind showing me around?"
Applejack's face broke into a wide grin. "Well, I'll be! It'd be my pleasure, sugar cube. Come on, I'll give you the grand tour."
As they walked through the orchard, Twilight's eyes sparkled with curiosity and excitement. She listened intently as Applejack explained the different apple varieties, from the crisp Honeycrisp to the tart Granny Smith. The farm girl's passion for her family's legacy was evident in every word she spoke.
Twilight peppered Applejack with questions about stuff like harvesting techniques, and the challenges of running a farm. Applejack was happy to indulge the Princess by answering all her questions.
Applejack led Twilight through rows of apple trees, their branches heavy with ripe fruit. The warm summer breeze carried the sweet scent of apples, and Twilight found herself enchanted by the simple beauty of the farm.
"And over here," Applejack said, gesturing to a particularly gnarled old tree, "is the oldest apple tree on the farm. My great-granddaddy planted it himself."
Twilight reached out to touch the rough bark, her fingers tracing the lines etched by time. "It's amazing," she whispered. "I can almost feel the history."
Suddenly, a gust of wind swept through the orchard, rustling the leaves and sending a shower of apple blossoms cascading around them. Twilight laughed with delight.
"You see," Applejack explained, gesturing to the trees around them, "each type of apple has its own harvestin' time. Some are ready early in the season, others need a bit more time to ripen up just right."
Twilight nodded eagerly, her eyes wide with fascination. "And how do you know when they're ready?"
Applejack chuckled, reaching up to pluck an apple from a nearby branch. "Well, it's part science and part instinct, I reckon. You look at the color, feel the firmness, and sometimes..." She took a big bite of the apple, juice dribbling down her chin. Twilight felt her cheeks get warm at seeing this though she didn’t know why.
“Your home is amazing. And is it true that this farm has been here since the beginning of the Kingdom?”
“Sure is your ancestor King Aviram the first who would have been your what great, great, great Grandfather?”
Twilight thought about it and confirmed that that was correct.
“Well King Aviram wanted a good healthy natural source of food for the Kingdom. My family already had a farm in Gruzia. Which my great-granddaddy worked on. He was the youngest of 6 so he jumped at the chance to come here to start a new branch of the family business. He would plant many trees including this one and became a key member of the kingdom.”
“Wow, that’s amazing.”
Applejack couldn’t help but smile at the Princess and as she looked at her and something about the way the sun shone on her face. Really brought out the Princess’ features which caused Applejack’s checks to heat up and she brought her hat down to cover her face.
“Are you alright?” Twilight asked in concern
“Yeah I’m fine sugar cube. Come on, I'll show you more.”
As they continued their tour of the orchard, Twilight and Applejack's easy conversation flowed like a gentle stream. The young princess found herself drawn to Applejack's down-to-earth nature and infectious enthusiasm. There was something refreshing about the farm girl's honesty and lack of pretense.
"And over here," Applejack said, leading Twilight to a small clearing, "is where we have our annual Apple Family Reunion. Kin from all over come to celebrate and catch up."
Twilight's eyes lit up. "A family reunion? That sounds wonderful! I've read about such gatherings, but I've never experienced one myself."
Applejack's expression softened. "Well, sugar cube, why don't you join us for the next one? It ain't for a few months, but you'd be more than welcome."
Twilight's heart swelled with joy at the invitation. "Really?”
“Yeah of course I’d love to have ya there.”
“Okay then I’ll come to it.”
"So, Princess," Applejack said as they paused beneath the shade of a large apple tree, "what's it like livin' in that big ol' castle? Must be mighty different from our humble farm."
Twilight's eyes clouded for a moment. "It's... it's grand, of course. But sometimes it can feel a bit lonely. There are so many rooms, so many corridors. And everyone's always so formal around me." She sighed, then brightened. "That's why I love coming out into the city, meeting people like you. It feels real."
Applejack nodded sympathetically, her green eyes full of understanding. "I reckon it must be tough, bein' a princess and all. But you know what? You're always welcome here on the farm, Twilight. No fancy titles or bowing required."
Twilight felt a warmth spread through her chest at Applejack's words. "Thank you, Applejack. That means more to me than you know."
As the sun began to dip lower in the sky, casting long shadows across the orchard, Twilight realized with a start how much time had passed. "Oh no, I should be getting back. My mother and aunt will be worried."
Applejack looked disappointed but nodded. "Course, can't keep your family waitin' on your birthday.”
“Wait, would you consider coming to my party?”
“Of course I’ll come, Twilight.” Applejack said with a warm smile.
The two young girls walk off towards the castle the guards who were accompanying Twilight were worried the Queen would be mad but Twilight assured them she would handle it.
As they approached the castle gates, Twilight's heart raced with a mixture of excitement and nervousness. She couldn't wait to introduce Applejack to her family.
The guards at the entrance bowed deeply as Twilight passed, causing Applejack to shift uncomfortably. Twilight gave her an encouraging smile and led her through the grand hallways, their footsteps echoing off the marble floors. Applejack's eyes widened at the grandeur of the castle, its spires reaching towards the darkening sky.
"Whoa, nelly," she whispered. "This place is somethin' else."
Twilight giggled at her friend's awe. "Wait until you see more of it."
They found Queen Celestia and Aunt Luna in the great hall, surrounded by decorations and a mountain of presents. The moment Celestia's eyes fell on her daughter, relief washed over her face, quickly followed by curiosity at the sight of Applejack.
"Twilight, darling, where have you been?" Celestia asked, her voice a hint of concern.
“I’m sorry mom but I was getting to know Applejack here my new friend.”
Celestia's eyes softened as she took in the sight of Applejack, who was trying her best to stand tall despite feeling out of place in the grand castle.
"Well, it's a pleasure to meet you, Applejack," Celestia said warmly. "Any friend of Twilight's is welcome here."
“Thank you my Queen.” Applejack said as she bowed.
Luna stepped forward, her midnight blue eyes twinkling with curiosity. "And how did you two meet?"
Twilight launched into an excited retelling of her adventure at the apple farm, her words tumbling out in a rush. Applejack couldn't help but smile at the princess's enthusiasm.
"And then Applejack showed me the oldest apple tree on the farm," Twilight continued. "It was planted by her great-grandfather! Can you believe it?"
Celestia smiled warmly. "It sounds like you had quite the adventure, my dear. And Applejack," she turned to the farm girl, who was still looking a bit overwhelmed, "we're delighted to have you join us for Twilight's birthday celebration. Please, make yourself at home."
Applejack nodded, her cheeks flushing slightly. "Thank you kindly, Your Majesty.
"...and Applejack knows so much about apple farming, Aunt Luna! Did you know that each apple variety has its own harvesting time? And they use both science and instinct to know when they're ready!"
As they spoke, Celestia and Luna exchanged knowing glances. It had been a long time since they'd seen Twilight so animated and excited about something other than her books. The young princess's eyes shone with a new light as she recounted her day with Applejack.
Twilight and grabbed Applejack's hand and two girl danced together until having some food.
Celestia and Luna smiled at seeing Twilight having so much fun with Applejack. As the birthday celebration continued into the evening, Twilight and Applejack remained inseparable. They sampled delicious treats from the lavish buffet, giggling as they tried exotic fruits and decadent pastries.
Twilight, feeling bolder than ever before, pulled Applejack onto the dance floor. The farm girl hesitated at first, her cheeks flushing.
"I don't know any fancy dances, Twilight," she admitted sheepishly.
Twilight smiled reassuringly. "Neither do I, really. Let's just have fun!"
And so they did, twirling and laughing, their giggles echoing off the high ceilings. The contrast between Twilight's lavender party dress and Applejack's simple farm attire only seemed to highlight the genuine joy on their faces.
Queen Celestia watched the pair with a mixture of contentment and nostalgia. She leaned closer to Luna, speaking softly so only her sister could hear. "It reminds me of us at that age, doesn't it?"
Luna nodded, a wistful smile playing on her lips. "Indeed. Though I don't recall us ever looking quite so... radiant."
"Whew, I reckon I ain't never danced like that before," Applejack said, wiping her brow. "You sure got some moves, Princess."
Twilight beamed, her cheeks pink from exertion and happiness. "You were amazing too, Applejack!”
As the music slowed, Twilight and Applejack made their way to the refreshment table, both flushed and breathless from dancing. Twilight poured them each a glass of apple juice, and they clinked their glasses together in a silent toast.
"I'm so glad you came, Applejack," Twilight said, her eyes shining. "This is the best birthday I've ever had."
Applejack smiled warmly. "Aw shucks, I'm glad I came too. Never thought I'd be celebratin' in a castle, that's for sure."
As they sipped their cider, Twilight noticed Applejack glancing around the grand ballroom with a mix of awe and unease. She reached out and squeezed her friend's hand reassuringly.
As they sipped cool drinks, Twilight's eyes wandered to the pile of presents nearby. Applejack followed her gaze and suddenly looked uncomfortable.
"Aw shucks, Twilight. I feel terrible. I didn't bring you nothin' for your birthday," Applejack admitted, hanging her head.
Twilight quickly shook her head. "Oh no, Applejack! You've already given me the best gift - your friendship." She hesitated, then added softly, "I've never really had a friend before, it's only me, my mom, my aunt and our guards.”
Applejack's eyes widened in surprise. "Never had a friend? But you're the princess! I reckon folks would be linin' up to be your friend."
Twilight shook her head, a hint of sadness in her violet eyes. "It's not that simple. Most people just see the crown, not me. They're too afraid or too eager to please. But you," she smiled warmly at Applejack, "you're different. You treat me like a normal person."
Applejack felt a lump form in her throat. She reached out and gave Twilight's hand a gentle squeeze. "Well, sugar cube, that's 'cause you are a normal person. A mighty special one, but still just a girl like me."
Twilight's eyes glistened with unshed tears of joy. "Thank you, Applejack. That means more to me than you know."
“Well I best head home before it gets too dark. I’ll see you tomorrow Twi.”
“Absolutely AJ.” with that the girls hugged before Applejack took her leave.
And from that day on, a strong friendship blossomed between Twilight and Applejack. Despite coming from different backgrounds and social statuses, they immediately connected and their bond only grew stronger over time. Applejack became a frequent guest at Twilight's gatherings, bringing joy into both of their lives.
