Chapter 7: Wake-Up Call

“I saw the smoke coming from this way,” an unknown voice floated through the trees.

Chorus, Prose, and Ginger Blush wearily opened their tired eyes to the sound of the mysterious voice.

“Did you guys hear that too?” Chorus whispered to the group.

A loud rustling and clamoring sounded out concerningly close to their clearing. The three ponies all shared a worried look as they quietly stood up from their sleeping positions.

“What do you think ponies are doing out this deep in the Everfree forest?” the voice asked.

“Isn’t it obvious? It’s probably Twilight’s spies. They’re hiding from me,” a second voice responded.

The second voice was unfortunately quite familiar to the ponies. It was the Dollkeeper.

Should we run?” Chorus mouthed to Ginger and Prose.

Prose raised a hoof, indicating that they should wait. She wanted to draw as little attention to themselves as possible. The sound of leaves crackling and twigs snapping continued to grow louder and louder. The ponies stayed statue-still, careful not to make a sound. Suddenly, a voice spoke out from behind them, clear as day.

“You thought you could hide from me in my own territory? Tsk tsk,” the Dollkeeper taunted. “I thought Twilight’s spies would be smarter than that. Well, this makes my job easier.”

The ponies whipped around to face the Dollkeeper (and one of his trusty clones) as a cloud of glittering red dust erupted from his horn.

“RUN!” Chorus shouted.

Chorus Prose and Ginger Blush all began to sprint away from the red cloud. The Dollkeeper pushed his magic further, expanding the cloud to extreme proportions. The ponies weaved and maneuvered through the thick trees, eventually getting separated by the winding paths and spooky forestry. Chorus turned around after a few long minutes of running to discover that he had lost the red cloud and the Dollkeeper. Unfortunately, he had also lost his friends in the process.

“Prose!” he called out. “Ginger Blush!”

Chorus wandered around the woods, hopelessly lost. That was when he caught a glimpse of some bright sunlight and some bright green grass. It looked like he was near the edge of the Everfree forest. He bolted towards the light, and burst out into the meadow outside of the forest. He could see Ponyville in the distance.

A faint rustling sound caught Chorus’s attention. He turned around to find Prose stumbling out of the woods a short distance away.

“Prose! Over here!” Chorus called.

Prose turned her head into Chorus’s direction. She immediately recognized her friend and trotted over to meet him.

“You made it out okay! That was a close one,” Prose celebrated.

There was a pause. Something – somepony – was missing.

“Where’s Ginger Blush?” Chorus and Prose spoke in unison.
