It was safe to say Fluttershy was having a bad day.

She had just moved to a town called Ponyville about a week ago and had helped many local animals with various injuries, but due to the fact that she was trying to help a very skittish rabbit. She was now hopelessly lost in the middle of the forest, while there was a thunderstorm raging above in the sky. But her one solace was that she had just found a cave.

As she entered the cave, subconsciously ducking her head. She wondered if she should stay near the entrance or go deeper in, the roar of thunder that was far too close for her liking. She quickly ran deeper into the deeper darkness of the cave, briefly overcoming her fear of the dark and just about everything else.

POV
I sat there, heaving for breath and my lungs burning. “it’s so scary out here, I want to go home.” there was a tremble in here voice, she was on the verge of tears. Then she noticed that she could actually see the cave around her. She looked up to find an opening in at the end of the tunnel which was letting out light. She nervously walked over, still on the verge of tears. She passed through the gap and emerged on the other side blinking rapidly, as her eyes adjusted to the bright light. She saw mountains of gold everywhere. Her jaw dropped and she just stared blankly at her new surroundings.

”what manner of creature might you be”

She instantly flopped to the ground, covered her eyes with her hooves and began to cry heavily. All the pent emotions from the new move, meeting way too many ponies and getting lost in the forest. All spilled out because of that scary voice , causing her to cry uncontrollably.

Smoug POV

I had just talked to the first living creature since turning into Smaug the dragon and now it was on the floor covering its eyes and crying. This meaning two things in his mind, one it was a sentient creature like a human, two he had no idea what to do.
So he tried the only thing he could think of. Trying to console her.

”It’s okay, you’re fine.” his voice, which sounded like death and the rumbling of an earth quake did not have the intended effect. I don’t think she even heard me.

As I thought what to say to console the, pony ?, Pegasus?. The girl, at least as far as I can tell, I brought my hand over to nudge her to see if that would get her to respond. But as soon as I touched her see clamped onto my finger, like a baby clinging to its mother’s leg. She was mumbling something I could only half make out through her tears, something about moving and being in a new place alone. Honestly it kinda sounded like my situation.

“It’s okay little one, I’m here for you”. That seemed to have actually gotten through to her, because she stopped crying heavily and instead quietly sobbed into my scales.

“Your voice is just so scary and I had to move and I had to meet so many new people and think I’m weird for not talking to them.” She sobbed into my hand.

“It’s okay, I’m here for you, just let it all out.” I said, in my softest voice possible.

After saying that I laid down and looked away, so she could let it all out in some sort of privacy. After a minute or two the sobs finally stopped, I looked over to find her curled up against my finger. I let out a soft sigh of amusement, then moved my chest in closer to hopefully keep her warm in her sleep.

Fluttershy POV

I woke slowly, holding what I assumed to be a pillow even if it felt a bit too warm and a bit too stiff to be a pillow. I try to remember last night because I remember being lost in the forest, but don’t remember going home. I found a cave, then I… found mountains of gold and a scary voice. I guess it must all been a dream because that is just ridiculous, even though the scary voice was very nice. I hope I thanked him.

So with the thoughts of last night’s dream fading from my mind, I went to start my day of animal care. But when I opened my eyes I was met with a wall of red scale. My mind went blank trying to figure out how my pillow could be scales, then my mind kicked itself into action. I scrambled up and away from the scales with a yelp of surprise, I continued to walk backwards terrified of the strangeness of my situation. I was so focused on the scales I was completely surprised when my rump bumped into something, I whirled around to see a yellow eye with a black vertical pupil, like that of a cat.

I stood there paralysed with fear, I wanted to run or even call for help , but my body wouldn’t let me do any of that. Then a voice broke me from my stupor, it rumbled like an avalanche and sounded very scary.

”Good morning.”

It was the kind voice from my dreams, at that exact moment It dawned on me that the dream from last night wasn’t a dream but reality. So as my mind raced at the implication of that, I said the only thing that came to mind “thank you”.

Smaug POV

After just saying good morning to the small pony how seemed to be terrified, in an attempt to calm her down. She responded in a way I didn’t expect.

“Thank you.”

I tried to come up for a reason why I would be thanked by a pony, that only saw my face a few seconds ago. I raised my head and turned it to look at the pony face to face.”For what.”

“For being so kind to me last night.”

“It is basic curtesy to be polite to a guest in one’s home.”

At that she began to look at her surroundings, seeing the carved walls and pillars. As well as the mountains of treasures that up the vast space. Her mouth began to slowly drop open at the sight of the large quantity of wealth on display, Not to dissimilar to last night.

“This is your home”

”Of course, there is no more fitting place for a dragon such as me to live.”as I said that I brought my body round to match up with my head and rose to my towering full height. But just as quickly brought my head back down as too not frighten her.

”But never mind that, where are my manners. I am Smaug, what might your name be.”

“My names Fluttershy.” She said in a surprisingly meek voice, the shock and general confusion of the situation dissipating to leave her more usual self in place.

“An interesting name to be certain.” it was quite the unique name, at least to me.

After my statement a moment of silence enveloped the conversation, so as the big scary dragon I decided I would break the ice.

“Fluttershy, if I may ask. What brought you to my home.”

“Well, I was trying to help an injured rabbit that kept running away. But eventually I lost it’s, then the storm started and made me lose my way. Until I eventually found a cave which lead me to your home.” As she spoke she seemed to almost shrink in on herself, as her voice also grew quieter.

You poor thing, I would offer a comforting cup of tea. But unfortunately I have none to give due to baseless misconceptions. I hoped a comforting word would help her feel a tad more comfortable in my presence, but which elicited a most unexpected response.

“I could get you some”

“A most kind offer, but I do believe it is an appropriate hour for such tasks.” She tilts her head to the side in one of the most adorable displays of confusion I have ever witnessed, though I am able to stop a from reaction showing. As to dispel her apparent confusion.

You may not have taken notice, but a considerable amount of time has past since you fell into your slumber. Eight or ten hours to be a bit more specific.” Her eyes widened at that.

“Then I need to get home quickly.” She turns around quickly as to leave then stops.

“Could you please give me some directions.”

“I can do you one better, I can show you there.” As I say that I spread my one of my wings out, to let her climb onto my back. There is some slight hesitation from her, but a quick nod of my head gets her to swiftly climb onto my back. After she gets settled I move quickly to get to the front gate. I slow down to open the gate but that is done easily and before she knows it we are in the air, circling above the tip of the mountain with the stars shining down on us.

“I am presuming you live there.” I say my head pointed down towards the town at the edge of the forest. I hear her reply of “yes” over the slight howl of wind. So with that confirmed I glide my way down towards the town. I am skimming over the tops of the trees when I say.

”Unfortunately I must leave the rest of the journey to your own wings as to not scare the townsfolk.”

“Okay. I’ll make sure to bring you that tea.”

“I would be delighted to host you as a guest again”

“Goodbye”

”Farewell” With those closing remarks, she flys off my back and I preform a tight right turn back towards my mountain. All I can think of is that I hope she does visit me again, it would get boring to just sleep all the time and she was very kind.

Until next time my dear reader, it has been my pleasure.
