Chapter 4: Through the Portal

In the last moment before she left the Crystal mirror room, Twilight thought she heard the ponies screaming Spike’s name. But, now that she was tumbling through the air, twisting and flipping through some unknown vortex, it was hard to tell. She couldn’t focus on anything, let alone figure out what had happened to him. Ouch! Twilight thought as her body contorted and stretched. She couldn’t see much. Just flashes of light, colors, and a blurry green-and-purple thing…

Suddenly, in a flash of white light, the unsettling sensation stopped. Twilight groaned from the adrenaline rush. Her eyes slowly opened to see grass and a cold hard gray surface. This hard surface is what she seemed to be on. As her vision cleared more, she saw a little dog that had the familiar emerald green eyes she knew belonged to Spike.

“Spike?” Twilight asked. “Are you a… dog?”

“I think so,” the dog version of Spike replied. He scrunched up his face. “But, I have no idea what you are.”

Twilight was confused as to what he meant. She reached out her front right hoof to look over herself, only to find that what she extended was not a hoof. Instead, it was a thin spindly appendage, ending in five thin digits.

“Huh?” Twilight asked herself. Afterwards, she let out a panicked scream. She covered her mouth to stop her screaming. She looked over herself. She was taller, skinnier, and was wearing some unusual clothes. She wore a light blue blouse fastened with a magenta bowtie, a dark purple skirt with a patch resembling her Cutie Mark, purple legwarmers with lavender argyle print, and black loafers. She had a studious look to her attire. On top of that, her coat appeared more fleshy and a lighter shade than her normal coat color. Her saddlebag even transformed into a backpack. She panted nervously. “Spike, what does the rest of me look like?”

“Well,” Spike said as he carefully looked her over. “You remember the description of that Megan character in the story of Hearth’s Warming?”*

“Yes,” Twilight said.

“Well, your body kind of fits that description,” Spike said.

“This is…” Twilight started to say. “Really surreal, for both of us.” She looked at her clothes again. “Where did these clothes even come from? I don’t remember putting these on going into the mirror.”

“They must have appeared some time between Equestria and here,” Spike guessed. He then looked around. “Although, where exactly is here?”

Twilight looked around herself. “I’m not sure, but, that supposed Sunset Shimmer can’t have gone far.”

“Can I please stay and help you look?” Spike asked.

“You’re willing to stay?” Twilight asked. “Even when we’re both in these… unique forms?”

“I want to help my mom,” Spike said, unconsciously making a face cuter than he ever had been capable of as a dragon.

Twilight couldn’t resist that adorable face, so, she smiled. “Alright,” Twilight said. “Since you’re so willing to stay, then, let’s look together.” She tried levitating him onto her back, but, she quickly found that it wasn’t working. “Something’s wrong, Spike. My magic isn’t working here!”

“Then, it looks like I’ll have to climb on,” Spike said.

So, with Twilight standing on her hands and feet, Spike crawled onto Twilight’s back. She then started off on all fours in an awkward manner.

“Uh…” said a passing-by boy walking a dog on a leash.

“I get the sneaking suspicion we’re drawing attention to ourselves,” Spike whispered to Twilight.

“I get the feeling that you're right,” Twilight whispered to Spike in return.

So, with concentration, Twilight stood upright on her two legs. She then gently set Spike down on the ground on all fours. She wobbled a bit, for she wasn’t used to standing upright on two legs. With a little practice, it started to feel more natural. So, she and Spike walk up to the front doors of a large building that looked like a castle to the two. Twilight suspected that the doors were locked and decided to try her magic again. Since she didn’t have a horn, however, nothing happened.

“I probably should’ve mentioned this earlier,” Spike said. “But, you don’t have a horn anymore.”

“What?!” Twilight gasped. She felt her forehead. “Do I still have wings?!”

“I can’t tell,” Spike answered. “That saddlebag’s in the way.”
