And for the first time in her long life, Luna didn’t feel alone.

The night was silent save for the sound of Celestia’s labored breathing as she lay sprawled on the cold stone balcony, her body still trembling from the overwhelming intensity of what had just transpired. The moon hung high in the sky, casting a pale light over the scene, illuminating the slick sheen of sweat that glistened on her fur.
And then, in the stillness, there was a soft knock at the door.
A young servant pony entered cautiously, carrying a small silver tray piled high with Nightmare Night candy. He hesitated for a moment as he took in the scene before him - the Princess of the Night, still towering in her Nightmare Moon form, standing over the prone form of Celestia, who was too dazed and spent to even acknowledge him. Swallowing nervously, the servant cleared his throat.
"Your... your Highness?" he stammered, addressing Luna, "I brought the treats you requested."
For a long, tense moment, Nightmare Moon didn’t respond. Her glowing eyes remained fixed on Celestia, her expression unreadable. Then, without warning, her entire demeanor shifted. The dark aura that had enveloped her flickered, and with a soft, almost playful giggle, the towering figure of Nightmare Moon seemed to shrink - the swirling cosmic darkness receding, her eyes softening from the fierce predatory glow into the familiar, gentle gaze of Princess Luna.
“Oh!” Luna gasped, clapping her hooves together in foal-like delight as she glanced at the tray. "My snacks!" she chirped, her voice now light and innocent, completely at odds with the raw, domineering presence she’d exuded moments earlier.
The servant blinked, confused, but Luna wasted no time, her horn glowing softly as she levitated the tray towards her. She sat down beside Celestia, cross-legged on the stone floor, and began happily munching on the colorful sweets, humming softly to herself as if nothing strange had just happened. She popped a candy into her mouth, the sugary treat making her grin with childish joy.
Celestia, still lying on the ground, blinked in disbelief. She turned her head to stare at her sister, her brow furrowed in confusion. “L-Luna?” she asked, her voice hoarse and breathless, her mind struggling to process the sudden shift. “What... what’s going on? You were... you were Nightmare Moon a moment ago...”
Luna looked up from her candy, her cheeks puffed out as she chewed. She swallowed, then gave Celestia a cheerful, almost innocent smile. “Oh, that?” she said casually, as if the dark, intense scene that had just played out was no more than a passing thought. “That wasn’t really Nightmare Moon, sister. The Elements of Harmony banished her for good, remember?”
Celestia’s confusion deepened. She slowly pushed herself up onto her elbows, still feeling the weight of her exhaustion. “But... then what was all that?” she asked, her voice still shaky.
Luna giggled again, clearly amused by her sister’s confusion. “It’s just a costume, Tia! I can wear the aura of Nightmare Moon like a mask, just for fun, you know, for Nightmare Night! It’s my holiday after all.” She winked playfully, biting down on another piece of candy. “You looked like you were really into it too.”
Celestia’s mouth opened and closed in stunned silence, trying to comprehend what her sister was saying. "A... costume?"
Luna nodded enthusiastically, her tail swishing with excitement as she continued nibbling on her sweets. “Mhm! After all, what better way to celebrate Nightmare Night than by embracing the legend? I can still use a bit of her power, wear the dark persona like a cloak. It’s so much fun scaring the ponies in the town square! You should try it sometime.” She gave Celestia a mischievous grin, licking some sugar off her hoof. “Though, I think I may have overdone it this time.”
Celestia stared at her, still struggling to piece together the wild shift in tone. “Luna,” she said slowly, her voice filled with disbelief, “you... you nearly made me beg for my life. And now you're eating candy?”
Luna tilted her head, as if genuinely surprised by her sister’s bewilderment. “Oh, Tia, you know it was all in good fun! Nightmare Night is the one time of the year where I get to be a little... naughty,” she said with a sly smile. “And besides, I couldn’t let you have all the fun, could I?”
Celestia’s jaw hung slightly open, her mind still reeling from the sheer absurdity of the situation. She had been utterly dominated by her sister in the guise of Nightmare Moon, only for Luna to revert back to her usual playful self within seconds, as if nothing had happened. She couldn’t decide whether to feel relieved, exasperated, or just plain baffled.
But as she watched Luna happily munch on her Nightmare Night candy, a soft, incredulous laugh escaped her lips. “Luna,” she sighed, shaking her head slowly, “you never cease to amaze me.”
Luna grinned widely, her eyes twinkling with mischief. “I do my best,” she said around a mouthful of candy, offering the tray to Celestia. “Candy?”
Celestia stared at the tray for a moment, then let out a deep, tired sigh. "Why not?" She reached for a piece of candy, her body still aching, but a small smile tugged at the corner of her lips.
Nightmare Night had always been Luna’s night. This time, it was a night neither of them would soon forget.
