She sighed. Today was not a good day for her. Twilight was in heat. It was a common occurrence for adult mares but this one felt… different.
The average pony was in heat for 5 to 7 days once every 21 days from April to October. Nightmare Night was usually the signal that heat was over for the year… and foals thought the holiday was just for fun. For older mares, it signaled relief.

Twilight shuddered at the thought, the idea of her father having to repeat this with her niece making her stomach twist. She had thought she’d seen the worst of it, but now she realized there was so much more, so many layers of this ancient duty that she had never imagined.
Night Light’s gaze softened, but the weariness in his eyes remained. “This is the price we pay, Twilight. To ensure the survival of your kind. To keep the magic balanced. There’s no escaping it, not for me… and not for any of you.”
Twilight sat in stunned silence for a long moment, her mind racing with too many thoughts, too many emotions to sort through. She stared at the floor, still trying to absorb everything - the truth about her mother, about Shining, about her father’s secret role in the lives of Equestria’s alicorns. And now… her own foal. Twilight felt her heart tighten. She had always thought she would have more time - time to fall in love, to build a family. The thought of giving the foal away felt like a cruel twist of fate, but the alternative… Could she raise it herself, knowing the circumstances of its conception?
“If it pleases you,” Night Light continued, sensing her hesitation, “Velvet could raise the foal. Just as she raised you. She doesn’t have to know the truth, and she doesn’t need to. To her, it would be like raising a grandchild. She would love them, care for them… You know that.”
Twilight swallowed hard, her throat tight. The thought of Velvet raising the foal was comforting, in a way. Velvet had been a wonderful mother, nurturing, kind, always supportive. If anyone could raise this foal with love and care, it was her. But would that be enough? Would that be the right choice?
“And if I want to keep the foal with me?” she asked softly, almost afraid of the answer.
Night Light nodded, understanding. “That’s your decision too, Twilight. No one will force you to give the foal up. You can raise it yourself, here, in the castle, or wherever you choose. But know this - whether you keep the foal or let Velvet raise them, the decision is yours alone. You’re not bound by tradition. You’ve already broken the cycle by knowing the truth.”
Twilight took a deep breath, her mind heavy with the weight of what he was saying. The choice was hers - her life, her foal’s life, and everything that came with it. There was no easy answer, no perfect solution. But as she looked at her father, she realized that he had given her something none of the other princesses had ever had: a choice.

Luna and Cadance made similar choices, for different reasons.” He paused, his eyes softening. “But this is different. You don’t have the same constraints they did. You have the chance to do things your way.”
Twilight’s chest tightened. She had always wanted to make her own path, to be the kind of ruler that balanced her duties with her personal life. But now that she was faced with this choice, it felt impossibly heavy. “I never imagined I’d be a mother like this,” she whispered, her voice shaking. “I always thought… I’d have time. I’d fall in love, and then… then I’d have a family.”
Night Light’s heart ached at the vulnerability in her voice. “Life rarely goes the way we plan it,” he said softly. “But that doesn’t mean it has to be any less meaningful. You’re strong, Twilight. Stronger than you realize. Whatever choice you make, you’ll do what’s right for you and for the foal.”
Twilight’s thoughts raced. If she kept the foal, she’d be raising them in the midst of her duties as the ruler of Equestria. But if she gave the foal to Velvet, it would be raised in a loving home, away from the pressures of royalty, just as she had been.
“Would it be easier to give the foal to Velvet?” she asked, her voice barely a whisper, almost afraid to hear the answer.
Night Light sighed deeply, his gaze soft but firm. “It might be easier in some ways, but that’s not the same as it being the right choice for you. Velvet would raise the foal with love, but if your heart tells you to keep them close, then that’s what you should do. You’re not bound by tradition, Twilight. You get to choose.”
Twilight closed her eyes, the weight of the decision pressing down on her. She took a deep breath, trying to center herself, to listen to her own heart. The choice was hers. No magic, no ancient tradition, no other princesses could make it for her.
Finally, she looked up at her father, her voice steady but filled with emotion. “I’ll raise the foal,” she said softly, the words coming out more certain than she felt. “I’m not going to hide them away or pretend they don’t exist. They’ll know who they are. I’ll give them a chance to be part of my life.”
Night Light’s expression softened with a deep sense of pride. “That’s a brave choice, Twilight.”

“I’ll do it my way,” she whispered to herself, her resolve hardening as she thought about the future. “No more secrets.”
Night Light smiled softly at Twilight’s decision, a deep sense of approval in his eyes. I’ll always be around - for you and for the foal.”
Twilight smiled back, a mix of relief and gratitude washing over her. Knowing that her father - really her father - would be there gave her a sense of reassurance she didn’t know she needed. "Thank you," she whispered, feeling the weight of her choice settling, but in a way that felt manageable now. “I’m going to need all the help I can get.”
Night Light nodded. "Of course. I’ll be here, Twilight, for as long as you need me."
There was a brief pause as the weight of their conversation began to lift. Twilight looked at her father with a curious glint in her eye, something stirring in her that she hadn’t expected to feel so soon after everything.
Her voice took on a lighter, more playful tone as she asked, “And… what about in-between heat cycles? Could I… call on you for some of those Royal Impregnator services?”
Night Light raised an eyebrow, a small chuckle escaping his lips. He had seen that look before, from other princesses and mares who’d come to understand the deeper benefits of his role. “Well,” he said with a sly smile, “I’ve always been at the service of the crown. Celestia used to summon me from time to time for… other purposes. She’d offer me as a reward to mares in the guard or in the court. It kept things… interesting, let’s say.”
Twilight’s eyes widened at the thought of her mentor doing such things, but at the same time, the idea stirred something in her that she couldn’t quite push aside. "So, I could just… summon you whenever?" she asked, a hint of playful curiosity in her voice.
Night Light nodded, his tone light but still serious. “Whenever you like, Twilight. It’s your privilege as a princess. If you ever feel the need… just call for me. My duties aren’t limited to heat cycles, after all.”
Twilight’s heart fluttered at the thought, her cheeks flushing slightly as she considered the implications. The heat was gone, for now, but the idea of having him whenever she wanted, on her terms, filled her with a sense of power and control that she hadn’t expected. She looked up at him, her voice soft but full of curiosity. "Maybe I’ll take you up on that sometime."
Night Light smiled warmly. "Whenever you’re ready, Twilight. I’m always at your service."
Twilight felt a strange comfort settle over her as the weight of the conversation lightened, a playful glimmer returning to her eyes. With everything that had happened, the idea of leaning into humor - even the dark, teasing kind - seemed like a small reprieve from the intensity of the moment. She smirked at her father, the corners of her mouth curling up mischievously.
"So," she began, her tone playful, a hint of teasing in her voice, "you want a turn with the foal once she’s eighteen?" Her eyes sparkled with the challenge, waiting to see how he’d respond.
Night Light raised an eyebrow, a grin tugging at his lips as he caught onto her teasing. He chuckled softly, shaking his head. “Incest doesn’t normally do much for me, Twilight,” he said, his voice warm and light. “But if it’s what my princess commands, I’ve never been one to refuse.”
Twilight giggled, feeling the tension of the day dissipate with their banter. She knew he was teasing back, but there was something comforting in knowing that, despite everything, their relationship still held room for humor. It made the enormity of their situation feel a little less overwhelming.
“You’ve always been so dutiful,” she teased again, leaning into the moment, “I might just hold you to that.”
Night Light smirked, his eyes filled with warmth. “Whatever you say, Princess,” he replied, his tone playful but full of affection. “I’m here to serve.”
