Author's Note
This was originally written in October of 2022 to post on my Ao3 account (where it still is). I made some very minor revisions (mostly just slight grammar improvements and changes of a few word choices). Might not properly represent my currently writing quality, but I still am decently happy with it, and thought it'd be good to upload it here.
A Letter For You
Pinkie Pie was quite the lively pony to say the least. She was energetic and always knew how to make those around her laugh. The fact that she had trouble being serious at times was pretty easily overlooked with just how much of a joy she was to be around. She made everypony she met happy, and that was especially true for a specific unicorn: Twilight Sparkle. Nopony made Twilight happy quite like Pinkie Pie.
It had been quite some moons since they’d first met now, hadn’t it? Twilight giggled thinking of their original meeting. It had been rather confusing at first, the way she’d seemed to be so astonished with the purple pony’s presence. And while it was true that she was, it wasn’t really for the reason Twilight would have hoped. It was just because she was new to Ponyville. Speaking of the town she currently resided in, she was more than glad that she’d made the decision to stay. Her friends meant everything to her.
Pinkie Pie had eventually become more than that in her eyes, however. It was hard not to be infatuated with her existence, Twilight thought. She could light up an entire room without the slightest of effort. Although Twilight wasn’t all that knowledgeable when it came to simple romance…she was certain she was in love by now.
Back when she was just a filly, Twilight had no reason to consider romance as a foreseeable part of her future. It wasn’t that she was opposed to the idea necessarily, but she had always just assumed that it was something that got in the way of her success rather than helped her along with it. Pinkie Pie had opened her eyes, however. She wondered how she ever could have thought such a silly thing! Twilight already had her around all the time, so why wouldn’t the love of a specific pony fill her days with nothing but happiness?
However, there was just one problem. Twilight had zero clue whether she felt the same way or not.
Of course, she tried to use books as a way to figure it all out. Though, Twilight hadn’t realized just how unhelpful books relating to romance could be. They were all endless fairytales of ‘you’ll just know’ and ‘the love will make itself clear at first sight’. Twilight didn’t know a thing besides her own feelings. How in Equestria was she going to figure out Pinkie’s feelings without being told? It wasn’t that easy..!
Twilight eventually came to the conclusion that she would just have to tell Pinkie how she felt. The idea made her nervous, but she knew in her heart that even if she didn’t feel the same way, Pinkie would never just stop being her friend. Pinkie Pie wasn’t like that, and she was (mostly) confident that however it turned out she would be okay with it. Sure, she would be sad if Pinkie didn’t have feelings for her. Devastated, maybe. But she would make it work. Right? She could make it work!
Okay, now she was less sure. Or maybe she wasn’t all that sure in the first place. Perhaps lying to herself about being confident that things would all work out in the end wasn’t the best idea.
Endless possibilities haunted her mind, but she tried to shoo them away. Pinkie seemed happy when she was around, didn’t she? That had to count for something, she hoped.
Twilight decided that she would pair her confession with cupcakes and flowers. Although Pinkie was definitely better at baking than she was, ( by approximately one hundred four times , Twilight concluded) she hoped she would appreciate the gesture regardless.
Making the cupcakes became easy when a recipe book accompanied her. All she had to do was follow the instructions, and everypony knew that Twilight Sparkle was great with directions. So, although it did take a bit of getting used to, they were ready before she knew it. It wasn’t anything too complicated, but Twilight thought they still looked nice. They were vanilla with the same flavored frosting, which was dyed pink with food coloring, topped with rainbow sprinkles. Twilight had to admit she was proud of the creation. She had to stop herself from eating more of the batch after the first taste test.
The flowers were an easy pick after she’d read up on them, too. Purple lilacs, she chose, which she had discovered meant new love, new beginnings, or similar ideas. The fact that when paired up with the cupcakes displayed both of the ponies signature colors was just a nice bonus. When researching, Twilight had found it very interesting that many flowers represented different messages. She decided that she would look more into that in the future.
The confession would be in the form of a love letter. Twilight was much better with words when they were written on paper. It would be easier to get all of the feelings out before there was a chance of interruption. Twilight thought long and hard about what she was going to write to her, Should it be long, or short? Should she keep it simple, or say everything on her mind? Even when staring at a paper with her feather quill held with her magic above it, she could feel the pressure weighing on her shoulders. After a few minutes of staring, she took a deep breath, and began her writing.
Dear Pinkie Pie,
I hope this letter is not too unexpected, or that if it is, you will accept it nonetheless.
I had considered making this long, and going into each and every one of my feelings in extreme detail. You know I do love details!
However, things like these are quite hard to describe properly. This is certainly not the first draft.
I will just say it outright, without any sort of stalling:
I am in love with you.
Whether you feel the same way or not, I hope to hear from you soon.
Sincerely,
Twilight Sparkle
P.S.: I hope you like the flowers! And the cupcakes, too! I made them myself!
Twilight exhaled with a feeling of completion now with her, placing the quill off to the side. She hoped this would do fine. Yes, it was short, but she’d come to the conclusion that that would be the best for something like this. After a few minutes of reading it over and over, she secured it neatly inside an envelope with a pink heart sticker to seal it. She would give it to the mailpony later on to give to her. She was truly hoping for the best here. Twilight had no way of predicting how this would go, and that made her nervous, but she hoped it would be okay anyway. She reminded herself over and over that even something like this couldn’t tear them apart. She was sure of that.
It was not too far in the future that Twilight gave up her letter along with the cupcakes and flowers to the mailpony, who thankfully didn’t pry when seeing that Celestia’s star student was sending what was more than clearly a love letter. She knew that meant Pinkie would be reading it within the next couple of hours; she was the type to read her letters as soon as they arrived. Twilight wondered how, or if, she would respond. Maybe she would write a letter back to her in return?
The hours from 11am to 3pm were agonizing, to say the least. Spike had tried to comfort her in her oddly panicked state, but she wouldn’t spill the details of what had happened to him in any regard. After the first couple of tries, the baby dragon had given up, settling to just read his comics instead.
It was 3:06 when Twilight heard a knock on the library door. Could it be?
Twilight practically ran downstairs to the door. When she opened it, she saw the pink earth pony she had been expecting. Twilight was preparing for some sort of rejection in her mind.
“Hi, Pinkie—Woah!” Twilight was quickly interrupted when she was pounced on with a hug. Pinkie Pie’s hugs were usually suffocating, but this was a whole other level of can’t breathe. ...That wasn't to say she disliked it, however. Her mouth hung open in surprise as she tried to formulate a sentence, but Pinkie spoke first.
“I love you, too, Twilight!”
Pinkie’s voice was slightly muffled through Twilight’s mane, but she had heard her loud and clear. She could hardly believe it. Pinkie Pie loved her. She couldn’t stop the words from repeating over and over again in her mind. Her heart swelled with an unimaginable joy. The smile she smiled right then was like no other she had smiled before. She wrapped her hooves around Pinkie, finally returning the hug.
Everything was wonderful.
