Author's Note

This was originally written in December of 2022 to post on my Ao3 account (where it still is). I made some very minor revisions (mostly just slight grammar improvements and changes of a few word choices). Might not properly represent my currently writing quality, but I still am decently happy with it, and thought it'd be good to upload it here.

The Proper Measurements Of Instant Hot Chocolate

"Twilight, Twilight!" Pinkie called, as she bounced up and down. Twilight Sparkle had just opened the castle doors to find her there, which was more than a pleasant surprise. She had never been the type for surprises, but with Pinkie everything was different. Twilight didn't usually like different, or unplanned, or unscheduled, but she liked Pinkie's different. It wouldn't even be wrong to say that she loved it. “Are you busy today?!” If this were anyponyelse, Twilight would wonder what had them so excited...but Pinkie was usually excited by everything. She was always happy about life, and that made Twilight happy, too. Her joy was something that was often rubbed off onto everypony around her.

Twilight pretended to think for a moment, even though she was already sure of her answer. “Looks like my schedule’s free!” She beamed, a wide smile on her face. She wondered if she should say the next set of words or not, and she hesitated, but after a moment she realized that it would be something Pinkie would be rather delighted to hear. “I’m never too busy for you, anyway, Pinkie.”

Pinkie giggled, and she managed to make the impossible possible by smiling even wider than she already had been (Twilight had almost questioned her understanding of physics once or twice, even if only jokingly so) and she looked especially delighted. “Yay!” She exclaimed, unable to contain her joy. “Can I come in?” She spoke quickly, like if she didn’t get the words out right away she would no longer be able to say them. Twilight laughed a little.

“Of course you can,” said Twilight, using her magic to open the door so she had enough room to walk inside. Pinkie was more than happy to prance inside the castle, and the two ponies, led by Twilight, made their way to the kitchen. This happened to confuse the pink earth pony the tiniest bit, although she didn’t seem bothered by it.

“What are we doing in here, Twilight?” She asked, unable to keep herself still, as usual. She hopped up and down slightly, but she didn’t leave the ground.

Twilight magically opened the cupboards, pulling out two mugs from within. “Do you want some hot coco, Pinkie?” She asked, although she was already approximately 99.9% sure of that answer. Or was it 99.8%?

“I love hot coco!” Pinkie Pie chirped, as if she didn’t love everything. “Yes, please!”

Twilight just giggled, nextly getting out some of the instant hot chocolate powder (she hadn’t researched on how to make it homemade, nor had she felt the need to learn any spell that would create it magically) and some milk out of the fridge. Pinkie watched intently as Twilight poured the different ingredients into the two mugs, making sure to get the measurements exactly correct. She floated one of the cups into the microwave and turned it on. “Is the one in the microwave mine, or is the one on the counter mine? Because I’m okay either way but I just can’t wait to have hot chocolate because I really like hot chocolate!”

“The one in the microwave is yours, Pinkie,” Twilight replied with a smile, and a small giggle. A couple of minutes later, it was done (PInkie was nearly bouncing off the walls at that point), and Twilight took the mug out of the microwave. At the same time, she used her magic to get the tiny marshmallows out of the cupboard and the whipped cream out of the fridge, both things that Pinkie Pie seemed absolutely ecstatic about. She put the whipped cream on top, and added more marshmallows than she would typically deem necessary, since that was how Pinkie liked it. She gave the cup over to Pinkie, who was more than happy to take it with her hoof.

“Thank you so, so, so much! I love you, Twilight!” She cheered, giving Twilight a very quick peck on the cheek before chugging half of the hot chocolate with ease. Twilight giggled. Pinkie Pie said she loved her a lot. She’d once read that ‘saying you love somepony too much takes away the meaning’, but for once she had to disagree with a book. That didn’t seem true at all, according to her personal calculations. The phrase gave her the same amount of delight each and every time, and her happiness was often raised by a significant percentage depending on the context.

“I love you, too, Pinkie.”

By the time Twilight had put her cup in the microwave, Pinkie had already finished her entire cup. If this were a different pony, she’d wonder how they could have drank something that was burning hot that quickly, but, again, this was Pinkie Pie. So instead of creating a math equation in her mind, she just laughed. Pinkie laughed, too, even if she didn’t know what was funny. Pinkie Pie's antics couldn't always be explained with the laws of physics.

“You’re really silly sometimes, you know?” Twilight said.

“Is that good?” Pinkie asked in return, tilting her head.

“Definitely,” Twilight assured. “I love that about you.”

Pinkie giggled, and she had returned to smiling, but she could tell from her blushing face that she had been flustered by that set of words.

The microwave beeped, and Twilight took the cup out of it, and prepared her cup almost the same as Pinkie’s, except there were fewer marshmallows placed on top. Twilight floated the cup near her, but waited to take a sip so it could have the chance to cool down a little. Suddenly, Twilight remembered something.

“There’s cupcakes in the fridge, if you want some,” Twilight told her, “I know they aren’t as good as your cupcakes, though.”

Pinkie Pie looked delighted, jumping over to the fridge in an instant, and taking out one and eating it right away. Twilight laughed softly, “Good?”

“Of course they’re good! They’re Twilight cupcakes!”

Twilight tilted her head a little, but still smiled. “I didn’t make them, Pinkie. They’re from the store.”

“I know! I saw the label,” Pinkie replied, “But since they were given to me by you that makes them Twilight cupcakes! And Twilight cupcakes are always good!”

“Would you still say that if they were the worst cupcakes you’d ever eaten?” Twilight wondered out loud.

“Twilight cupcakes can’t be bad, silly!”

Jokingly, Twilight said, “Hm! Maybe I should do some research on this phenomenon.”

Pinkie Pie giggled rather loudly, which Twilight was sure she would have done whether it was intended to be a joke or not. “You’re already an expert!”

“I don’t think I’m an expert at cupcakes. Or anything baking related.”

Pinkie’s eyes lit up, and you could imagine the lightbulb going off above her mind. “Oh, oh! I have a really great idea!” She burst, raising one of her hooves in the air like she was a filly hoping to get called on in school.

“What is it?”

“I could show you how to make cupcakes, Twilight!” She grinned, seemingly rather excited by just the idea of that. “Can I? Can I?” She was jumping up and down.

“I’d love to bake with you, Pinkie,” Twilight said, thinking for a moment. “Although, I don’t have all the proper ingredients here. Maybe we could do that at your place tomorrow?”

Pinkie nodded at least five times. “This is gonna be so fun!”

“I’m sure it will be. Sorry if I’m not the best baker, though.”

“That’s okay, Twilight!” Pinkie said, “You can’t be the best the first time you try anything!”

Twilight nodded in reply. She sat down, and Pinkie, rather quickly, took the opportunity to run over and sit right beside her, leaning her head on her side. Twilight smiled, and wrapped her wing around her. Although she was certainly happy the way they were, she realized that the kitchen floor was not the most comfortable sitting spot. “Want me to teleport us to the couch?”

Pinkie Pie giggled. “Okay!”

Twilight used her magic, and with a quick zap they were on Twilight’s rather oversized couch in the living room. For once, Pinkie Pie was content with being quiet and just relaxing with Twilight. As much as she adored Pinkie’s antics, she appreciated the chance for some peaceful silence every once in a while. Naturally, she was more than happy to just sit there for a while, with the pony she loved most.
