Ocellus was a professional at being the third wheel. Tonight was proof of it, she thought, sitting quietly in the dark of the back seat of Gallus’ motor carriage, biting her lip to the sound of lips smacking lips, and giggling and grunting and whispering. I can’t take much more of this.

Snapping her mind back to reality, Ocellus sighed quietly as she watched Silver lie against Gallus’ shoulder as he drove. She was helpless but to stare at the way they held each other, the way Gallus’ eyes traced Silver’s mane and her eyes and her skin. No one’s ever looked at me like that.
The best she could hope for was to watch, silently, from the dark of the back seat. Twice she caught her hoof inching towards the wetness spreading under her skirt. They’ll see. There was Patty Peppermint and Berry Bliss, and of course, the new recruits too - four ponies, Winnie Waltz, Scootaloo, Vaporwave, and Buttercup, and a dragon, Moira. Vaporwave resembled Shimmy Shake, only smaller, as the two were sisters. Ocellus winced at the sight of them, who were all drenched in sweat and covered in bruises. There were red streaks on all of their flanks, the result of a vicious hour-long spanking session. Buttercup was blindfolded for some reason, while Scootaloo's face was caked in an excessive amount of makeup. Winnie had a clothespin stuck on her tongue, and Moira's arms and wings were tied to her side with rope. “ALRIGHT YOU LITTLE BITCHES!” barked Berry Bliss, “AIR RAID!”
The recruits all threw themselves down to the ground, sprawling out on the pavement.
“THAT WAS PATHETIC!” Berry laughed. She was a pink mare with bouncy, purple curls tied up in a ponytail, a sweet little smile and a skip in her step. She used to play as a starter for the school’s buckball team, but had since switched over to cheerleading after she was stuck on one too many bench shifts.
Nearby, Shimmy Shake, Lighthoof, Patty Peppermint, and Smolder were all laughing.
“LET’S TRY IT AGAIN! THAT MEANS GET UP! YOU LAZY LITTLE BITCHES! GET UP!”
The recruits sprang back up, and as soon as they made it to their hooves, Berry began again.
“AIR RAID!”
The recruits fell back down to the road, quicker this time.

Ocellus sighed. The five recruits all looked half-dead, exhausted no doubt after a full day of torment.
“OK, let’s call it for the night,” Ocellus said.
“Ocellus, we just got here!” Silver said.
“Yeah, I was just about to make them do the taste test again,” Berry grinned, wickedly.
“NOT THAT! ANYTHING BUT THAT!” wailed Buttercup.
“Shut up, newbie!” yelled Berry.
“We’ll pick it up tomorrow,” Ocellus said. She spoke softly still, for all her efforts to be more of an assertive leader, there were some habits she could not shake. Luckily, Lighthoof came to her aid.
“I’ve got some food and drinks inside. My parents won’t mind, we just can’t make a mess. She’s right, Berry, it’s getting late. You five can get yourselves cleaned up, too,” Lighthoof said. She caught Ocellus’ eye for a moment, and Ocellus could hear the recruits all sigh in relief.
Ocellus caught Scootaloo and Vaporwave before they could follow Smolder and Yona, who were heading inside the house.
“Are you two OK?” Ocellus asked.
“Yeah, it wasn’t too rough,” Scootaloo insisted, though she did seem a little shaken up. Ocellus rested a hoof on her shoulder.
“If it gets to be too much, talk to me, OK? I don’t want anyone getting hurt,” Ocellus said.
Scootaloo and Vaporwave smiled and nodded, and took off after the others.
Ocellus sighed and turned away from the house, back towards the road.
“You won’t come in?” Lighthoof asked. Shimmy was beside her, equally perplexed.
“I just wanted to make sure they were OK. I should get home, it’s been a lot today,” Ocellus said.
Lighthoof raised an eyebrow.
“ “Look, uh, Ocellus,” Lighthoof said, glancing at Shimmy, who gave her a look of encouragement, “We’ve been meaning to say that, uh, we’re getting a little worried about you.”
“What?” Ocellus asked.
“I just….Well, you never want to hang out, y’know? I feel like outside of practice, we’re like…we’re not really like, friends,” Lighthoof said.
“Of course we’re friends!” Ocellus said, “I just…Y’know. I don’t like to go to the same stuff you guys do, that’s all.”
“But why not?” Shimmy asked, “We like, totally miss you. Don’t you want to hang out with us?”
“I do, but….I just don’t want to do certain things, is all,” Ocellus said, “Why’s it an issue?”
“Because the grass is a lot greener on the other side,” Lighthoof said, “There’s a whole life that you’re missing out on! Don’t you want to meet creatures? Maybe even a special somepony?”
Ocellus blushed.
“There’s only a hoofful of boys who even know I exist,” Ocellus said, grimly.
“And that can change. It’s not hard to get their attention,” Lighthoof said, “They’re boys.”

“Yeah. But it’s a better way of having fun,” Lighthoof laughed, “At least I think so. And I’m usually right, aren’t I, Shimmy?”
“Yuh huh,” Shimmy assured.
“You might like it too, if you gave it a try,” Lighthoof continued, “What have you got to lose?”
“A lot,” Ocellus muttered.
“Nothing worth keeping,” Lighthoof corrected, “You’ve gone on all this time sticking to your guns, and we’ve always respected that, but I mean, c’mon Ocellus, we both know it’s about time for something to give. I can tell you’ve been wanting to try.”
Ocellus sighed and glanced at the floor.
“Hey, tomorrow night Shimmy and I are going to a party over at Patty’s. You should come with us,” Lighthoof said.
“I don’t know, I…” Ocellus began.
“PLEASE?” came Lighthoof and Shimmy in unison.
Ocellus fought hard against a smile. She sighed and shook her head,
“....Maybe….I’ll let you know by tomorrow.”

By Friday afternoon, Ocellus was still far from making up her mind. When the school bell rang she knew she only had a few more hours to decide, but she had work to do in the meantime, anyway.
She found the team manager’s office abandoned, as it usually was. Ocellus had taken on more responsibilities than what was expected of the team captain, though she considered it a necessary burden.
Her afternoon was supposed to be quiet that day - some health forms needed to be processed, and some event details needed to be registered with the school. Then she would deal with Shimmy and Lighthoof.

Berry slammed a stack of papers down on the desk. Ocellus glanced down.
“The financial report?” Ocellus asked, “How’d you-”
“That little office aid twerp gave it to me, said I’d be grateful to know what you’ve been up to. How could you, Ocellus? How could you?”
“What are you talking about? I ran all those numbers three times, I didn’t make a mistake,” Ocellus said.
“Exactly. You told them the truth?”
“Was I supposed to lie?” Ocellus stammered.
“YES!” Berry roared, “They’re gonna find out what we’ve been spending the school’s money on, Ocellus, and we’re gonna get screwed!”
“What we’ve been spending on? You’re the one cheating the school, not me..”
“It’s the captain who’ll be held responsible,” Berry pointed out, “They pay us eight grand and we only spend half. They’re going to ask you where all the rest of the money is going to, you do know that?”
“...Yeah, and I’m going to tell them. I didn’t want this to be a blow up, but this is your mess you put yourself in. If I don’t say something, they could shut down the entire team,” Ocellus said.
“Ocellus, don’t,” Berry said, meekly, throwing her hooves in the air, defeated, “Please. You know what that will mean for us?”
“You’re the one laundering money to pay for your parties and Adderall, Berry,” Ocellus said, eyeing Berry up and down, “If we own up to it they might go easy on us, but if we try and be sneaky it’ll only make this worse. I know it’s tough to be honest but this is the right call, for you and for all of us. And we actually do need that money for supplies and events. You’re leeching off us and you want me to just sit by and let that all slide?”
“I guess I thought you were my friend, so yeah,” Berry said.
“If you were my friend, you wouldn’t be trying to use me to get away with everything. I’m set on this, Berry. At the meeting I’m telling the truth,” Ocellus said.

“Berry talk too much,” Yona laughed, “Her and Shimmy and Lighthoof. What they say to you?”

“Berry’s just trying to make my job difficult. And Lighthoof, she wants me to come with her to that party tonight,” Ocellus said.

“Really? You do?” Ocellus asked.
“I can tell you’ve been wanting to try it. As long as you look after yourself, I’m sure you’ll have a good time,” Smolder said, “But I think Yona and I will sit this one out. You’ll have to fill us in tomorrow.”

“Did you try talking to her?” Patty asked.

Berry’s smile faded off her face, and she glanced at the ground, pensively.
“OK, then you’re going to help me oust her as captain,” Berry said.
Patty considered it, glancing away from the TV for the first time.
“You’d need a majority vote for that,” Patty said, “And I don’t know if the rest of the team sees things the way you do.”
Berry laughed.
“Well, they’re going to.”

Lighthoof, meanwhile, wore a pink tube top and a purple miniskirt that left most of her posterior completely exposed. Her tail served as the only cover for her privates, which were otherwise entirely out in the open. Ocellus was blushing beet-red at the sight. Both of the girls reeked of sweat and cheap perfume.
“Ocellus! Babe! You look totally bitchin’! That dress is super choice!” Shimmy Shake chimed, “Sorry we took so long, we got a little lost. Are we ready to jet?”
“Yeah,” Ocellus smiled, shyly, and tagged along. Lighthoof held her hoof as they descended down the stairs to find the ground floor.
The whole walk to Patty’s house over in uptown Ponyville, Ocellus hardly said a word. Lighthoof and Shimmy each talked enough for the three of them, anyway.
Ocellus recognized the house, high up on the Mire Hills. There were carriages parked all along the street and in the driveway, and the bass from the music could be heard all the way from down the street.
“There’s so many creatures,” Ocellus remarked, wondering how many she would recognize. She made sure not to fall behind, as she followed after Shimmy and Lighthoof like a child with her parents.
The front door was unlocked, to Ocellus’ surprise, and nopony was there to vet the attendants. I wish Smolder and Yona had come with me. She did not want to end up alone in there.
With just one step through the door, Ocellus was overwhelmed by the heat, the result of the fifty-odd creatures that had crammed themselves into Patty’s kitchen, living room, and dining room. Patty’s parents must have out of town for longer than just tonight, otherwise there was no way Patty could ever hope to clean all this up in time.
“OH MY GOSH OCELLUS I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU’RE HERE OH MY GOSH!” squealed the voice of Silverstream from the living room. She was sprawled out on the sofa, hidden in the crowd, facing a TV playing Pride and Prejudice.
In front of Silver, Ocellus spied a half-started line of powdered cocaine on the coffee table, beside some rolled-up dollar bills and quite a few empty beer cans. Silver’s lipstick was still smudged all over Gallus’ face, who was sitting on the edge of the sofa, with one claw on a beer and another on Silver’s ass.
Silver leapt up to shove through the crowd and hug Ocellus, who warmly received the gesture.
“I didn’t think you - You look great! Holy fuck holy fuck holy fuck! You’re so gorgeous Ocellus like fucking shit like holy shit WOW. Hey, Sandbar! Sandbar! SANDBAR!”
From across the dining room, Sandbar finally heard Silver’s call, and he started over, sauntering through the shallow crowd of creatures. Ocellus had not even realized that she had moved away from the foyer now, as the current of bodies straddled her along.
“Ocellus, no way, you came!” Sandbar smiled, once he arrived. .
Gallus had already pulled Silver back beside him on the sofa, winking at Ocellus, who felt her throat close up as soon as she locked eyes with Sandbar.
“Yeah, I’m like, um, super stoked to be here, dude,” Ocellus smiled, awkwardly, doing her best Sandbar imitation. She remembered him loving the way she mimicked his mannerisms, but this time he only seemed confused. Sandbar’s smile wavered.
“We don’t get to hang out as much anymore, it’s a total bummer,” Sandbar said.
“I know, I’m just, so busy with school, and the team, and….I mean, I miss you, so so much, we really should - “ Ocellus tried to say, before Sandbar’s attention was diverted by two passing ponies. She recognized them both as friends of his, Sugar Maple and Huckleberry, but never got the chance to introduce herself, before the three boys all began laughing together about something and wandering off. Ocellus felt her smile fade as she watched him float away, and her thoughts were left leaking out of her mouth into a puddle on the floor. She felt herself shrink there in the middle of the room, surrounded on all sides but utterly alone. Or so she thought, before Lighthoof and Patty Peppermint emerged from the crowd, the latter arriving with her boyfriend, Slate, wrapped around her arm. Slate was handsome, bluish-gray with a dark cerulean mane.
“Hey, Ocellus,” Patty smiled. Ocellus eyes her. There was something odd in the way she said hello; it was if she was addressing a wild animal, or perhaps somepony who doesn’t know about their upcoming surprise party. Surprise. What surprise?
“You know Slate, right?” Patty asked.
“Only from what you tell me,” Ocellus lied. She recalled all the nights in her bedroom she would phase into Patty and masturbate over a print-out photo of Slate, or other nights with the roles reversed. Lighthoof laughed.

Ocellus mustered up her courage and put the cup to her lips, at the same time Shimmy did with hers. Nodding along to count themselves in, they each threw the cup back towards their mouths, pouring the contents straight down their throat. Ocellus realized she was swallowing too fast, and took slower gulps, focusing on pouring as much as she could down as fast as possible.
To her shock, she made it to the bottom of the cup in less than a minute, and she only gagged a few times.
“Nicely done,” Lighthoof smiled, “We’ve got to do some shots together later. I just love your dress, by the way!”
“Thanks, you look great too!” Ocellus said. She only felt like smiling then, and what was so strange was that all of her fears and doubts had seemed to stop occurring to her entirely.
“A lot of creatures have got their eye on you,” Lighthoof smirked.
“They do?”
Lighthoof nodded.
“They’re not so hard to crack. Everypony’s got their vulnerabilities, y’know? Putting yourself out there is a huge start, but you’ve got to know how to please other creatures too, and how to please yourself, of course.”
Ocellus could not stop herself from laughing. None of you could deal with how I please myself.
“I think I already screwed up,” Ocellus said, glancing over at Sandbar.
“Sandbar? Aww, you two would be cute together!” Lighthoof said, “Go talk to him! One bad conversation isn’t the end-all, y’know.”
“I don’t want to seem desperate,” Ocellus said, “It’s supposed to be him chasing me, not…Forget it.”
“No, I hear you,” Lighthoof said, “But sometimes you have to take what you want.”
Shimmy left Ocellus with a hoof gliding over her side and her thighs. Ocellus tensed up at the touch.
In the kitchen, Patty and Slate had rejoined with Berry Bliss, who was impatiently waiting for Auburn to finish using the bathroom.
“I can’t believe she actually came,” Berry growled.
“Berry, just let her have this night, at least. I think it’s good she’s coming out more,” Patty said, while struggling to keep a dizzy Slate from falling onto his face.
“She thinks she’s above all this, but she shows up anyway? Are you fucking kidding me?” Berry said, before noticing Shimmy Shake and Lighthoof strutting past.
“Hey, both of you! C’mere,” Berry said.
Shimmy and Lighthoof exchanged a wary look and approached, while Patty continued holding Slate up.
“Never thought I’d see the day Ocellus shows up to one of these,” Berry said.
“Yeah, it’s like, totally awesome!” Shimmy smiled.
“She didn’t waste any time on Sandbar. She’s got it for him, I think,” Lighthoof said.
“...Really?” Berry asked, intrigued.
