Chapter 14: Put To The Test

“So this is how we die, poison gas fills the room and ends us,” Luigi said as he took off his poultergust.

“Don’t worry, I know there’s a way out of this room!” I exclaimed while I began to search for clues until Luigi stopped me.

“That’s ENOUGH!” Luigi exclaimed in a way I had never heard from him before. “This is it, you always try to find the answer to every single situation we come across! First the spirit balls, then the three doors and you pulling the lever with no idea what would happen! Do you even know what we’re dealing with? This isn’t a game Twilight!” Luigi snapped as he shouted all of this at me.

“But…I…I was just trying to help..” I responded calmly.

“You were just trying to help or were you trying to take over?” Luigi asked furiously.

“I…I wasn’t trying to…I…I just…I was trying to help out…” I said while fractions of tears started to form around my eyes.

“I was here first! You’re the newbie here, YOU ARE NOT IN CHARGE!” Luigi yelled as he sat on a nearby couch and placed his hand on his head.

“I’m….I’m sorry….it’s…” Luigi said calmly as I sat next to him on the couch.

“Is…anything bothering you?” I asked after a few long seconds of silence.

“It’s just that…I’ve always done this on my own. Sure Egad and Poulterpup are helping along the adventure but I’ve always been exploring these mansions on my own, other than Goouigi but he felt more of a device than anything. When you came along, I was glad I wouldn’t be exploring this palace alone this time. I would have someone to talk to, I would have an extra companion, I kind of thought I could also be a mentor of sorts, just like Egad was to me. At first, I was just that but I saw that you knew everything I wanted to teach you. You knew how to light up the room, how to use the ponygust almost instantly, what door to pick, and how to defeat the bigger ghosts, something that I’m still not a master at. I felt like I wasn’t needed anymore, even though that’s a selfish reason for being mad at you for trying to help…I just felt like player two when I thought I would be player one for a change, I’m sorry,” Luigi said as I could see tiny tears streaming down his face.

“I…I’m sorry…I…I didn’t know, I didn’t mean to steal your thunder, I thought I needed to be a master at this ghost-busting business to stand a chance at stopping King Boo and Hellen together. I didn’t know you wanted to help me out, I would have been thrilled to learn from you that way, even if I did learn a lot of moves from you back there,” I said with a faint smile.

“It’s not your fault you learn quickly…just…even though I always get terrified of these places…it’s what I’m known for. My brother always goes on these massive, high steak adventures worldwide and, I’m just his sidekick, his player two. These adventures are all that I get to shine in and well…I felt threatened when I should have viewed you as a friend…I’m sorry,” Luigi said quietly, just as quietly as Fluttershy’s quiet voice, maybe even quieter.

“Well, I can certainly understand your motives, my brother has always been better at talking to other ponies and being a leader while I never learned how to do any of that before I met my best of best friends. Magic was all that I had back when we lived together and I know for a fact I would have felt threatened if you showed up and just mastered it faster than I could have,” I said as I thought back to all the times my brother was in the spotlight while I was more off to the sidelines.

“Seems we both know where we’re coming from, being the younger sibling to player one,” Luigi said.

“Yeah…maybe we both wanted the player one title without knowing it,” I said as a few seconds passed before Luigi spoke up.

“Maybe…maybe it’s time to drop number one,” Luigi said as he stood up.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“Well, we are a team, we can’t be focused on titles if we want a chance to stop King Boo and Hellen while also saving both our worlds,” Luigi said as I stood up.

“Well, there’s no player one and two in a team,” I said.

“That’s the spirit, so, let’s find a way out of here and save the day as a team!” Luigi said confidently.

“I couldn’t say it better myself,” I said as we searched for a way out of the room.

“Hm, there has to be a way out of here,” Luigi said as he flipped the platform back and forth until I noticed something interesting.

“Hey, do you see this? There seems to be some sort of vent,” I pointed out as Luigi stopped the platform.

“You're right, we can crawl out of here!” Luigi said as he started to open the vent until I started to smell something...odd.

"Hey...do...do you smell that?" I asked in-between coughs.

"Yes...oh no, she wasn't lying about the poisonous gas!" Luigi exclaimed as in a few moments, we couldn't do anything but cough for what felt like eons.

"What do we do! I can't...use my magic against this gas! I'm too weak!" I exclaimed between several dozen coughs.

"It's risky, but I think I have an idea!" Luigi exclaimed as he pulled out the tube with the superstars from the Poultergust.

"You want to use the superstars! But Egad told us to save those for a last resort!" I exclaimed.

"This is a last resort Twilight, we have to use them!" Luigi exclaimed, knowing that we didn't have a choice. I nodded my head and with a lot of force, Luigi pulled out the top of the tube as he gave me a star with two oval eyes that looked extremely pretty.

"On three....three!" Luigi exclaimed as he crushed the star in his hand as his whole entire body began to glow with starlight. His body flashed several colors a second, it was hard to look at him with just how bright he looked.

"You're turn Twilight, just crushed the star with you're hooves! We don't have a lot of time!" Luigi said as he wasn't coughing from the gas anymore.

"Alright! Here goes nothing!" I exclaimed as I crushed the star to the ground as swiftly as I could. In that moment, I felt...different. It reminded me of when the three princess transferred there magic into me to keep it safe from Tirek not too long ago as I felt like there magic had been transferred into me. I felt a rush of power throughout my body, I felt....well....powerful. "Woah, I feel amazing!" I exclaimed as I took a look at my powered up self. My body and hooves were shinning with flashing colors and lights like a firework show. I felt my magic levels were through the roof, I felt as if I could do anything in that moment.

"These stars do make you feel amazing, don't they?" Luigi asked.

"They certainly do!" I exclaimed.

"Now we don't have much time before they wear off, we need to sneak through the vents," Luigi said as we did just that.
Using my new, powerful magic, I was able to open the vent door very quickly and it was just big enough for the two of us to crawl through. We crawled through the ventilation for what felt like days until Luigi spotted the hallway from where we entered the living room. We crawled out of the vent until we noticed something odd about the hallway. There were no doors, the lights were practically nonexistent and at the end of the hallway was this huge open door of King Boo. “Seems like we don’t have another option,” Luigi said just as our star powers wore off as we retuned to our normal looks.

"Well it was fun while it lasted, it certainly was a rush," I said.

"It always is, even after using them so much over the last few decades," Luigi responded as we proceeded to trot through the door. We entered this room filled with screens, a desk, a chair, and dim lights, it was quite upsetting and a little bit sad.

“H…hello?” I asked nervously.

“Well well well, I wasn’t expecting you two to make it here,” Hellen’s voice said as we turned around and saw her facing a nearby window, looking mad but also relieved, it was giving me and Luigi the most uncomfortable and unsettling feeling. “You lot are always full of surprises, you know that?” Hellen said as she turned to us.

“Yeah, I’ve been told that before,” I said confidently.

“Yet you wanna-be heroes are always the ones who ruin all of my plans,” Hellen said loudly

“And we’ll ruin this one!” Luigi said nervously.

“Is that so? Do you think you can stop me again? Such confidence from a weak little scary cat!” Hellen laughed.

“That scared cat isn’t alone this time,” I said confidently.

“You’re right, you two have been nothing more than a hole in our plans. Framing the both of you in our little painting will be twice as much fun!” Hellen said with a smile on her face.

“There’s just one more thing that we have to ask,” An unfamiliar voice said just as we turned around and I saw what looked like King Boo holding a painting as he slammed the door close. “How should we watch you pay for all you’ve done?” King Boo asked with a very evil laugh.

“AHHHHHHHH!!” Luigi and I screamed louder than I ever had before. Luigi wasn’t kidding, King Boo looked quite terrifying. With his glowing purple eyes, sharp spiked teeth, not to mention this all-powerful crown with a purple gem that rested on top of his head…he looked tough to beat. My friends and I have taken down many villains before, each being very challenging but this time, I was very unsure of how to take down this villain, let alone King Boo and Hellen at the same time. All we had were these vacuums, we didn’t have many tools.

“You two and that dinky little professor thought you could defeat us, US?” King Boo exclaimed as he used his crown to lift the painting that I could only assume had Luigi’s brother along with someone else in it. He then summoned this small cage that to our dismay, Egad along with Poulterpup was it.

“Egad! Poulterpup!” Luigi exclaimed with tears.

“Oh yes, you can say goodbye to this old coat, and your little dog too!” King Boo exclaimed as Poulterpup barked a few times before Egad threw the two into the painting but he didn’t close it off. “Hm, something is missing from this portrait.....oh, I know what's missing. I think there’s room for two more creatures, and they share you're names!” King Boo said with an evil smile.

“Not this time you wicked beast, there’s two of us now! You couldn't even capture me when it was just me for three times in a row! I'd like to see you try and capture two of us!” Luigi exclaimed with fear as we both drew our Poultergusts at the ready, for a battle.

“You know there’s two of us as well, right?” Hellen asked.

“Oh right, I forgot you were still here, why are you still here?” King Boo asked.

“Because we both want to destroy these pests' sweet checks,” Hellen said.

“Ugh fine, I’ll be loads more fun watching you pay before I portrait you two, this will be FUN,” King Boo said as we stood still with fear as King Boo drew the first attack, waiting no time whatsoever. He and Hellen were ready for a fight, and we were going to give one right back, it was now, or never.
