The Cold Sucks
Not a morning pony
Load Full StorySunset snored quietly into her pillow, a thin trail of drool running down her cheek onto the pillow as she curled up in a ball deeper into her sheets subconsciously.
Her dark black curtains were drawn tight to keep the sunlight out. Sunset didn’t necessarily like the color black, but she had to admit it was useful at keeping the sunlight out. Sunset was only a fan of the sunlight after ten am or occasionally twelve in the afternoon. She was not a morning pony by any means.
Sunset’s windows had a thin layer of frost on them as some ponies outside were salting the sidewalks or pegasi moving clouds around the sky. None of which she was concerned about. All she was interested in was the warmth of her bed as she nuzzled her pillow with a large smile.
Sunset’s smile faded slightly as some ponies laughed outside and she grumbled slightly under her breath and shifted deeper into her mattress.
She didn’t know what they said, but she did know she didn’t care at this point in time. Sleep was all she cared about in her nice warm mattress that she enchanted specifically with her magic to stay at a comfortable eighty eight degrees. Comfortable to her at least.
“Ughhh,” Sunset grumbled and held her second pillow over her head as she covered her entire body with her blankets. “Out of all the towns Mom sent me to, it had to be the one where they wake up singing songs at- what time even is it?” A pair of teal eyes was all that could be seen as Sunset peered out from her cocoon, straining to read the clock. “Fucking seven forty am.”
Sunset cuddled her pillow as she dropped the blankets back over her and attempted to go back to sleep. Her ears flicked as she made out singing and she slammed her head repeatedly into her pillow.
“For fucks sake!” Sunset cursed and closed her eyes harder. “Is that Shoeshine singing? What the fuck is going on?”
“After months of summer and warm days,” Shoeshine’s voice came through Sunset’s window and Sunset smiled slightly despite her anger of being woken up. Shoeshine almost never sang at all to her knowledge so this was pretty rare.
“Wait, I’m supposed to be angry,” Sunset realized and shook her head. “Shut the hell up out there! It’s only-” Sunset glanced at her clock again. “Eight am! Wait four hours.”
The singing stopped abruptly and Sunset waited for a verbal reply. Instead, she got several loud knocks on her window and she jumped, watching some small pebbles falling and she snarled, throwing her blankets off her to the floor.
“Oh, heads are gonna fucking roll.”
Sunset shivered as she trotted down Ponyville’s main street, gritting her teeth. She hadn’t counted on it being so cold out otherwise she would have grabbed her sweater, scarf, hat and boots. The cold sucks and Sunset was personally not a fan of it.
Sunset had cast a heating spell on her but it yet to have any affect on her, to her chagrin as she kept trotting till she found her friends sitting on some benches laughing.
“Holy Celestia,” Roseluck commented as she and the others stopped to look at Sunset. “Girl, where is your coat? It’s like, thirty degrees out.”
“Not like thirty degrees out. It is thirty degrees out,” Trixie corrected casually and she examined her blue hoodie with stars in the sleeves a light purple skirt for some reason with blue lining and a wand on it followed by four blue boots with purple and stars on the front. Roseluck shot her a dirty look. “Anyway, what’s up? You look cold.”
“I am cold,” Sunset mumbled and sat down on the bench shaking. “W-w-why the hell is it so cold out? What the hell is going on out here with everypony trotting around with paper and quills?”
“Planning out the path for this year’s Annual Running of the Leaves,” Derpy explained as she and Silverspeed wrapped wings around Sunset. “This will help warm you up. I don’t know what you were thinking.”
“I was thinking of tracking down who ever the fuck threw pebbles at my bedroom at eight am and giving them a piece of my mind,” Sunset grumbled and Roseluck chuckled. “What?”
“That was me. It didn’t break or crack, did it?” Roseluck asked and Sunset shook head. “Excellent. We’re preparing for winter. Dinky, Liza and Ruby are currently helping Fluttershy with the animals. Since you’re here, you can help too now!” Roseluck excitedly clapped her hooves and Sunset really didn’t want to help in all honesty. She just wanted to go back to sleep now. She was starting to regret leaving her room.
Sunset yawned and rubbed her eyes with her hooves as her spell finally started warming her up, thankfully. She was half way to giving up on it ever working.
“Remind me to get a book on animals of the Everfree for Hearths Warming,” Sunset muttered and paused. “Wait. Why aren’t you just using magic to get ready for winter like they do in Canterlot? They clean up winter using magic too.”
“Not a chance. This is an earth pony town. We do things the earth pony way,” Shoeshine clarified and frowned slightly. “No magic allowed. We use our hooves or mouths for everything.”
Trixie chuckled and Silverspeed rolled her eyes, whapping her upside the back of her head.
“Get your mind out of the gutter,” Silverspeed muttered and Trixie laughed again as the others groaned.
“She’s at least telling the truth. They do use their mouths or hooves for everything,” Trixie shrugged and made a gesture to her mouth with a hoof.
“You are insufferable some days, you know that?” Roseluck grumbled and Trixie nodded as she fished some peanut butter crackers out of her hoodie pocket.
“I know. Anyway, this town only uses earth pony ways and pegasi ways. No magic or well, no unicorn magic at least. There’s a few other towns like this I’ve been in,” Trixie explained to Sunset before stretching out. “You get used to it. It takes forever for them to get done.”
“You said no magic, right?” Sunset asked and Shoeshine nodded. “What do you say about the pegasi using their magic to get clouds ready?”
“I uh well that’s different. I’m talking your horn. Them using their wings doesn’t qualify. It’s the only way they can get the skies ready for snow,” Shoeshine answered and Sunset raised an eyebrow slightly at her blue friend. One of them, at least. Sunset never realized how many blue friends she had. Weird how things like that work out. She had Trixie, Shoeshine, Minuette, Screw Loose and a few others.
“Mhm,” Sunset snarked and rolled her eyes. She didn’t really see it being much different to her. In her eyes, the other two tribes had their own version of magic. It wasn’t limited to just unicorns. Earth ponies naturally had an affinity to nature and strength. Pegasi had their wings and the ability to control the weather. Sunset stood up and started trotting away.
“Where are you going?” Derpy asked as Sunset glanced back at her confused friends.
“Back the fuck to sleep. It’s too early for this.”
Author's Note
For context, yes Trixie's described outfit is her human outfit we saw from Equestria Girls.
And yes, this is the whole story. I didn't want Sunset to have the whole winter wrap up thing. S1 of mlp is fucking weird. We go from sunny weather one episode to them clearing up winter the next, like the fuck? The winter stories are gonna take place in my version of S2 along with some more stuff.
