Nightshade
It was often said that Nightshade was the queen of flowers. Like most rare and highly coveted flora of its type, it bloomed incredibly rarely, could only be nourished by the most delicate of hooves, and only seemed to grow in the most exotic, secluded little crevices of Mother Nature.
Of course, its name was of no small significance. Unlike most flowers, when it bloomed, it only did so at night during the full moon.
It made sense, then, that Starless Night had heard whispers of it ever since she was a little batty. If the rumors were true—and it did make a lot of sense if they were—then it would serve as a crucial ingredient if she ever wanted to summon back her beautiful Queen of the Night, Nightmare Moon.
Starless’s fluffy mane prickled with pride as she reflected upon her self-imposed task. It was said that Nightshade could only be retrieved by the most resilient of adventurers—and her warrior blood fit the bill perfectly. She didn’t care how long it would take; she would follow her snoot to the ends of Equestria and back if it meant getting her hooves on the rarity.
She sent out a playful scree, listening as it reverberated off the nighttime forest foliage and bounced back into her twitching ears. Good, she was wandering deeper, and deeper she would go. Not even the fiercest of manticores or the most heinous of hydras could stop her. She was on a mission, dammit!
She giggled. Not like any of those creatures would be awake, anyway. It was good being a bat pony!
She pushed her way through another dense thicket and found herself in a meadow clearing. The crisp air was still, and soft moonlight gently illuminated its center.
Starless gasped. Right in the middle, a small patch of delicate flowers blossomed in the pale moonlight. Its hue was a deep and mysterious purple, freckled with yellow and orange spots that almost glittered.
Starless didn’t truly know what flower this was, but something in her gut told her this was it—this was Nightshade.
She swooped over to observe the flowers with a leap and flap of her wings. With wide eyes, she licked her toothy lips in anticipation. She bent down, and in reverent solemnitude, did what had to be done: she shoved her snout all the way in and took a big sniffer, absorbing every last scent to determine the flower’s origin.
Her mouth dropped open. Oh yes… it smelled sweet, fresh, and good! It was one of the most succulent sensations she'd ever seen, almost like it was speaking to her directly. Taking an even bigger sniffer, she observed that the pollen of the plant didn’t even begin to suggest it would make her sneeze—rather, it reinvigorated her mind and focused her thoughts even more on the pretty flora.
She squished her silly little cheeks with both hooves in delight. There was no denying it. Surely, there was no other flower than Nightshade that could make her feel as good as this!
As if the plant had heard her, it spritzed her with another light shower of its pollen, almost like it was telling her how much it looked forward to being pollinated. Of course, that was something Starless would do. She was getting wet just from the thought of it!
Wait, what?
A shudder of pleasure ran through her body, and she shivered in delight. Cheeks flushing at the sudden development, she gave the flower another sniff.
