The Retreat

"I...I-I don't understand." Chrysalis stood speechless. Not a single changeling recognized her.

"Do you not know your Queen when you see her?" She asked a staring cheese-leg.

"Queen? We've never had a Queen." The changeling scoffed.

"Well...what do you have?" Chrysalis then asked.

"Where have you been living? The surface?" The changeling scoffed again, laughing at the taller changeling's confusion.

"We have High Emperor Faron and Councilmen Greg. Such a weird name that one." The changeling reluctantly said, as if in pain.

"Okay then. Well...thank you for telling me." Chrysalis thought for a moment before turning to head back to the cart. Ezio and Fel'ed were waiting for her there.

"Well? Did you find anything out?" Ezio asked.

"There is a High Emperor and a Councilmen, that's it I think." Chrysalis sighed.

"What now?" Fel'ed turned his gaze away from the window for a moment.

"They all seem so...happy. Like they don't even know how close they are to extinction..." Chrysalis put a hole-filled hoof up against the clear glass.

"They...they don't need their Queen anymore..." Chrysalis was obviously saddened.

"Now, do not say that. Something is amiss here, have you not noticed?" Ezio started, his eyes quickly scanning over the town in Eagle Vision.

"What do you mean? I don't see anything out of the ordinary..." Chrysalis wiped her face.

"Really? Not even the fact that those two changelings, without even being remotely in contact with each other, are in complete synchronization? One leg up, a tap, a flutter of the wings...And that there is nearly three times as many changelings with that particular hoof-scar than there should be?" Ezio pointed out the doubles.

"I find it highly unlikely that they all just happened to have gotten the exact same injury. No one seems to even notice the fact that there was screaming and large explosions coming from the neighboring town? Something is definitely wrong here." Ezio smiled smugly at his findings.

"I see it now...but what does it mean?" Chrysalis stared hard at a group of chatting changelings.

"If I were to guess, I would say these aren't your changelings. If changelings at all. Something is definitely odd around here." Ezio saw movement in the corner of his eye. He turned to see but spotted nothing but a blur.

Palace

Two changelings listened in on the carriage's conversation, nodding and writing down notes regularly.

"They know." One said grimly to the other.

"How did they spot it so fast?" The other changeling swore silently.

"I have no idea Emperor Faron, but they need to be...escorted out of the city, less they bring to much attention to it." One continued.

"I will arrange it, Greg." Faron turned and walked calmly out of the room. He met with another group of executives and sent them on their task quickly.

"Xaran needs to hurry up and get into Equestria. I've given that buffoon enough." Faron sighed. After Faron was elected Xaran Ruying had come to him with a sob-story hoping to get Faron's help with funding an invasion on Canterlot. No, not that one, a different one. One that could work. The basic gist of the story was that Celestia had his sister Gilda exiled after an incident in Canterlot and that rose some red-flags in the Gryphon Mountains. Last straw, blablabla, tired of ponies being the only first-class citizens. So he wanted to bring down the capital and cause a downfall of sorts.

But something about Xaran's story struck Faron as odd. The plan sounds fool-proof though, which is what dumbfounds Faron. Create some more tension between the ponies and changelings by having changeling rebels pose as pony soldiers and cause more havoc in the Hive. When enough get through, changelings attack pony-towns. And just when the cord snaps he sends Canterlot off the side of that damned mountain.

Xaran himself was a bit off a loose-screw. After some research he had found that Xaran had a rap-sheet that could stretch from the far end of Equestria to the capital in The Hive. Things ranging from petty thievery to grand treason.

Faron didn't care anymore. He just wanted to keep his position. No matter what.

Back in the carriage.

Fel'ed had gone to grab some supplies while Ezio and Chrysalis discussed what could be done.

"I think we should just leave..." Chrysalis admitted, disheartened.

"Where would we go?" Ezio asked bluntly.

"I don't know, changelings aren't very welcomed in the Gryphon Mountains, maybe the Diamond Caverns. Or we could risk it and sneak back into Equestria.

"I just know that I would only screw things up here. I couldn't even take Canterlot during a wedding!" Chrysalis half-shouted.

They talked for several more minutes before getting a knock on the carriage door. When Ezio checked he saw that it was most definitely not Fel'ed. Rather a large platoon of changeling soldiers.

"By order of the Emperor you have been ordered to leave the Hive. You have been reported planning acts of treason. Treason is the highest offense." The commander ordered sternly.

"We have done no such thing!" Chrysalis shouted angrily. The commander suddenly drew his blade and sent it through his neighbor's throat. The changeling dropped limp almost instantly.

"There, now there is treason, and murder." The commander scoffed.

"Look, just get out of here before we have to force you." He then said. Ezio stepped outside of the carriage and drew his sword, ready to fight.

"There are thousands of us here, do you really expect to last long?" The commander smiled smugly as the shriek of thousands of blades being drawn filled the air and drowned out any other noise. Ezio could realize when he was outnumbered.

"Kill him." The commander ordered. Ezio's eyes went wide at the unexpected sudden order. Before jumping on the carriage he made sure to drop a smoke bomb. By the time the soldiers had a clear view the carriage was already speeding away. Ezio was crouched on the roof and was picking them off with his wrist-mounted pistol. He knew he wasn't making a difference, he just wanted to spite them.

"Did you see Fel'ed anywhere?!" Chrysalis shouted from the interior of the carriage.

"No! He has no known affiliation with us though, he will be fine!" Ezio answered, hastily loading his pistol time after time.

"Never have I felt so unsure about the odds! We must leave quickly!" Ezio then shouted, dodging a thrown sword.

The chase went on for weeks. Ezio had long ran out of ammo, even the reserves he kept on the carriage. He however wouldn't be able to keep shooting if he could. A couple days back a changeling had gotten lucky and got a very lucky hit on Ezio's shoulder. Ezio would go on to be hastily and sloppily bandaged by Chrysalis. Luckily, the border was in plain sight.

Instead of fighting the ponies that guarded the border, the gate was blasted open by Chrysalis. They would leave the chasing changelings to deal with the ponies. Very soon after breaking sight of the gate the headed deep into the nearby forest to try and rest. The carriage pullers sure deserved it. They had quickly scrounged together a quick meal and camp from what little rations they had. Sure in their hiding place, the group let sleep take them.

Several hours later they all woke up and started packing up the camp. Chrysalis still seemed shaken by the chase. So suddenly cast out of her own...or, it once was her own kingdom? Why?

It didn't matter now, she was no longer Queen Chrysalis. She was now just Chrysalis.

"What am I going to do...?" She asked herself. Ezio laughed sadly.

"I know that look. I had that look for the longest time after Cesare Borgia killed my uncle. The look of not knowing what to do next, whether to give up and run or stay and fight. And you want to run. You want to know what we are going to do? I know what we will do." Ezio drew a changeling sword.

"Based on what Fel'ed has told me, the changeling soldier's use only one style of blade, jagged and rough. A great blade for cutting large portions out of a person. This blade is straight and sleek. Completely different. If those were actually changeling soldiers they wouldn't be using these. I have a feeling something much bigger is happening." Ezio explained. he sighed before tensing and rocketing the blade into a nearby tree.

"You haven't said what we are going to do." Chrysalis remarked.

"You have to trust me on this. We will go to the ponies." Ezio then said. Chrysalis visibly flinched.

"Are you crazy! We can't go to Celestia, I'll be arrested again and you will probably be executed!" Chrysalis quickly stammered.

"The enemy of my enemy is my friend. They are not your people anymore. If any of my assassins turned on me I would not think twice about severing their heads. You do not betray a superior." Ezio explained truthfully. It was obvious he meant every word.

"You will have to trust me. You can explain what happened and negotiate a chance for freedom for information." Ezio then explained.

"Do you even hear yourself?! I would be slaughtering my own people! I suppose assassins are used to stabbing people behind their backs." Chrysalis' ending remark made Ezio boil.

"You think I like doing what I do? I have had to tear apart families, drive the innocent into poverty, and I have had to throw my entire life away for a cause I barely believed in! Do you think that was easy!? È dannatamente scarabeo ingrato (You damn ungrateful beetle)!" Ezio roared.

"I...I..." Chrysalis was in shock by Ezio's sudden outburst.

"No! It was not easy! I have risked my life for you two times since I have been here, be grateful! You will now listen to me, and only me, until I tell you otherwise." Ezio ordered.

"Now, get in the damned carriage!" Ezio pointed a finger at the packed cart. Chrysalis whimpered as she climbed into the cushioned carriage. Just for the hell of it, Ezio lit and threw a Splinter Bomb deep into the forest.

The rest of the five changelings soon were ready and set off to their new destination.

Canterlot.
