Chapter 8: Applejack and Apple Bloom’s trial (The Haunted House of Panic)
Previous ChapterNext ChapterThe dimly lit graveyard simulation felt eerily real as Applejack and Apple Bloom slid out of their shared tube, landing in a patch of fake, damp grass surrounded by tombstones. Fog curled ominously around their boots, and faint wails echoed in the distance. Apple Bloom shivered, clutching Applejack's arm.
"This ain't real, sugarcube," Applejack said with a soft smile, pulling her sister close. "It's just part of the game. We got this, together."
Before Apple Bloom could reply, two glowing orbs of light floated from the mist and embedded themselves into their chests. Apple Bloom giggled, surprised at the strange sensation.
"That tickles!" Apple Bloom exclaimed, poking the faintly glowing orb.
Applejack, however, frowned as the orb's presence made her chest feel heavy. Her nerves only worsened when glowing red numbers—5—appeared on the surface of each orb.
The uneasy silence was broken by a holographic ghost materializing before them with an earsplitting shriek.
"Yaaah!" Apple Bloom yelped, jumping behind Applejack.
Applejack stumbled back with a loud gasp. "What in tarnation—?!"
The ghost, a glowing specter with sunken eyes and a mischievous grin, floated closer. "Welcome, contestants, to the Haunted House of Mayhem!" it announced. "Your challenge: survive ten minutes inside the haunted house ahead! Complete challenges, overcome your fears, and don’t lose your lives! Each time you wuss out or fail to keep your composure, your orb will lose a life. Fail entirely, and—poof!—you're outta the game!"
As the ghost explained, the numbers on their orbs ticked down from 5 to 4.
"Hey, wait a minute!" Applejack snapped. "That jump-scare wasn't fair! How are we supposed to keep lives when y'all scare us before the dang challenge even starts?"
As she finished, her orb ticked down to 3.
"Complaining costs lives too," the ghost said smugly.
Applejack groaned, gritting her teeth in frustration, while Apple Bloom managed a nervous smile. "C'mon, sis, we can do this! We're Apples, ain't we? Tougher than a barrel of cider! Let's stick together."
Applejack straightened up, drawing strength from her sister's confidence. "You're right. Let's do this."
The ghost cackled. "Good luck!" A door to the haunted house creaked open, and the timer began to tick: 10:00.
Challenge 1: Maze of Electrical Wires
The first room was a dark labyrinth of buzzing, sparking wires suspended just above the ground. A sign on the wall read: Cross without getting shocked! Five zaps equals one lost life.
Applejack tested the path ahead, her keen farm-trained reflexes helping her dodge the sparking wires. She made it across unscathed.
"See, Apple Bloom? Just gotta take it slow and steady!"
Apple Bloom hesitated before stepping in, her hands trembling as sparks flew around her. Her confidence wavered, and she flinched, accidentally touching a wire.
"Zap!"
"Agh!" Apple Bloom yelped. She winced but pressed on. Another zap. And another. By the time she reached Applejack, she’d been shocked ten times, and her orb's number had dropped to 2.
Applejack looked at her worriedly. "You alright, sugarcube?"
Apple Bloom nodded, though tears pricked her eyes. "I'm okay, I can keep goin'."
Challenge 2: Bobbing for Rings
In the next room, a long coffin sat in the center, filled with writhing snakes. A sign above it read: Retrieve the ring inside with your mouths!
Applejack's face turned pale. "N-nope. Not doin' that. No way, no how."
The instant she backed away, her orb ticked down to 2.
Apple Bloom steeled herself and stepped forward. "I-I'll do it." She reached in, trembling as snakes slithered around her head. With a triumphant pose upon rising, she pulled out the ring.
"Got it!"
Applejack smiled. "That's my brave little sis!"
Challenge 3: The Flooding Room Escape
The next challenge pushed them both to their limits. The door slammed shut behind them, and water began pouring in through grates in the walls. Words etched into the far wall read: Find the hidden exit to escape!
As the water rose, sharks swam in, their fins slicing through the surface.
Apple Bloom’s breath quickened, her eyes darting frantically. "A-Applejack, I-I can't—!"
"Apple Bloom, listen to me!" Applejack said, gripping her sister's shoulders. "Breathe, sugarcube! We'll find a way out!"
But Apple Bloom couldn’t stop panicking. The water reached her waist, and her orb’s number dropped to 1.
"Apple Bloom, focus!" Applejack pleaded.
But when a shark swam closer, Apple Bloom screamed, and her orb hit 0. Her body shimmered with golden light before breaking apart into particles, leaving Applejack alone.
"Apple Bloom! No!" Applejack cried, sinking to her knees as the water drained away and her orb disappeared.
The trapdoor beneath her opened, dropping her into the corridor where Sci-Twi, Spike, Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash were waiting.
"Applejack!" Rainbow exclaimed, rushing to her side.
Applejack couldn’t hold back her tears. "She’s gone! Apple Bloom’s gone! She lost her five lives!"
Fluttershy gasped, her sad feelings getting even worse.
Rainbow put an arm around her as Sci-Twi and Spike exchanged grim looks.
"Pinkie Pie failed her trial too," Sci-Twi said quietly.
The corridor felt colder than ever as Applejack wiped her tears, steeling herself. The challenges weren’t over yet—and the stakes were higher than ever.
