With her brow knit and fists clenched, Rarity storms through the streets of Ponyville. This year was supposed to be different, when her life finally took a long overdue turn for the best, yet fate had robbed her yet again. Another Hearts and Hooves day was coming to an end, and she was no closer to finding love.
She lifted her head as she rounded a corner and set her sights on her destination. Days like these were the worst, even if she’d grown used to them as she’d gotten older. The bad news was that her hopes had been dashed once again - the good news was that there were ways to deal with such lamentable circumstances.
Barging into Sugarcube Corner, she slowed. Would an abundance of calories help her keep her filly-like figure? No, not in the slightest. Would gorging herself on sweets make her feel better? Yes, for a time - plus it was a more reasonable option than picking up a bottle of wine. As her eyes drifted over the various confections and baked goods, a great many of which had been depleted from the occasion, her grimace deepened.
Great - fantastic. She had intended on purchasing some cookies for herself, specifically oatmeal raisin, but the only ones left in stock were chocolate chip, peanut butter, and a handful of snicker-doodles. Turning and glancing at the displays by the exit, she paused when she saw her reflection in the glass of the front door.
She tried to look her best at all times, regardless of whether she was toiling in the bowels of her boutique or while she was out and about, although she’d pulled out all the stops today. Her cocktail dress was revealing but tasteful, riding just high enough to show off a bit of her thighs, and her makeup was immaculate. Between her attire, neatly styled mane, and the touch of cosmetics she’d applied, she could have been mistaken for a model - sadly, nopony was going to appreciate it.
“Be right there,” a familiar voice called out, shaking her from her thoughts.
Turning and glancing to the back of the shop, past the counter and beyond the confectionary, she faintly smiled. Pinkie Pie, one of her oldest, most trusted friends, had a way of brightening nearly anypony’s mood; her cheerful demeanor and positivity were a light in the dark, infectious in the best of ways, and she was the finest baker in all of Ponyville. Brushing herself off, she sauntered over to the cash register.
“Take your time,” she responded, “it’s just me.”
There was a clatter of cookware and a clamoring of shoed feet from the kitchen area before Pinkie replied. “Just in time!” Skipping out with a steaming sheet tray in her mitted hands, she beamed. “Ta-da!”
Rarity’s eyes widened as she gazed upon two dozen fresh, moist, piping hot oatmeal raisin cookies. She would have been surprised with such a serendipitous development, had similar things not happened on innumerable occasions in the past. With a smile that reached her eyes, she lifted her head and peered over at her friend.
“Pinkie sense,” Pinkie chipperly noted as she sat the tray down and peeked back at her tail. When she finally looked over to Rarity’s face, her mirth wavered. “Everything alright?”
“I…” Rarity stopped herself.
It would be trivial to lie, to brush off her miserable day and pretend that she was just fine, though she thought better of it. Deceiving anypony, much less a friend, was wrong - on top of that, Pinkie had a way of telling when somepony was out of sorts. There was only one thing to do under such circumstances, but that didn’t mean she was looking forward to it.
Closing her eyes and pinching the bridge of her snout, she shook her head. “No - honestly, I’m anything but alright.”
“What’s wrong? Did one of your dresses not sell well? No, wait ~ is there a spider in the boutique?” Pinkie inquired. Drawing a deadpan glance from Rarity, she frowned. “Oh, right. Is it because it’s that day?”
“Yes,” Rarity grunted, “it’s that day.”
Pinkie threw her hands in the air in frustration. “Seriously? Don’t tell me it happened again!”
“Fine, I won’t tell you,” Rarity sighed.
She’d had more failed dates than she dared to count, yet those were far better than being stood up entirely - just like she had been earlier. Everything had been going so smoothly that she should have realized something was amiss. She’d had no small amount of correspondence with Lothario, a handsome stallion she’d met through a matchmaking service run through the Canterlot Gazette, and they’d agreed to meet in Ponyville face to face. It wasn’t until she’d waited for the better part of two hours at the cafe that she finally realized what had happened.
Stamping a hoof, Pinkie crossed her arms over her chest. “Did he at least show up?”
“No,” Rarity lamented, “and that’s why I’m here. I’ll take a dozen of those cookies and a pint - no, a quart of rum raisin ice cream.”
“I think we just got some rum raisin in. Hang on, lemme check,” Pinkie thought aloud while she turned and bent over a deep freezer situated behind the counter.
Rarity’s gaze was drawn to an expanse of pink peeking from beneath Pinkie’s collar. Unlike herself, the esteemed baker was heavy of chest and exquisitely shapely. It wasn’t like she was jealous of her friend, taking pride in her own looks, but it was a marvel that somepony hadn’t scooped the happy-go-lucky mare off her feet.
Straightening up, Pinkie placed a chilled tub next to the register. “Here ya go, a quart of rum raisin and two dozen cookies. Just let me get them all boxed up for you.”
“Pinkie, darling, you’re an absolute peach,” Rarity murmured. Twisting and slipping a hand into her pocket book, she fumbled around for her bits. “What do I owe you?”
“Owe me?” Pinkie parroted with a confused look on her face. “Rares, you don’t owe me a thing. After what you just went through, and especially with you having done yourself up like that,” she observed, waving a hand at Rarity, “you don’t owe me a thing. I don’t know who the stallion who left you high and dry was, but he was a real jackass - actually, no, that gives jackasses a bad name!”
Rarity snickered at the glib comment and small joke. “He most certainly was a waste of time, that’s for sure, and he won’t be hearing from me again.”
“Good,” Pinkie snorted, “because you deserve way better - like way better!”
As gratifying as it was to hear such a claim, it did little to bolster Rarity’s spirits. Everypony she knew had told her she’d find her prince charming, a fine, gentlecolt to sweep her off her feet, although it had never happened - worse still, she wasn’t getting any younger. It wouldn’t be long until the ravages of time took a toll on her, robbing her of her youthful appearance and making it increasingly difficult to find her special somepony, and the thought of that alone was enough to crush what little happiness she’d gotten from arriving at Sugarcube Corner.
Slapping the counter and causing Rarity to start, Pinkie removed her apron and stomped away. “Actually, you wait right there ~ ok?”
Rarity shrugged, too melancholic to worry about a few spare minutes. “Ok…”
Whatever Pinkie was intending to do, it likely wouldn’t do her much good. The hole in her heart wasn’t going to be filled by desserts, she felt more miserable than ever, and she even questioned why she’d gone off to get a temporary, sugary reprieve from her loneliness - still, she did as she’d been asked and waited. At best, she may get a laugh from whatever harebrained scheme her friend was going to enact - at worst, she’d stop by the wine shop on her trek back home.
Within minutes, the unmistakable click-clack of heels echoed from the stairwell leading upstairs and to the Cake family’s residence. Rarity presumed that it was Mrs. Cake at first, likely going out for the evening with her husband, but she couldn’t have been more mistaken. To her shock and utter bewilderment, she found herself looking over at none other than Pinkie.
“Ta-da - second one for the day!” Pinkie exclaimed, spinning and showing herself off. “What do you think?”
“Pinkie…” Rarity trailed off, at a loss for words.
Simply put, Pinkie looked gorgeous. Gone was the simple and functional apparel of a baker - in their place was a gown, heels, and top that wouldn’t have looked out of place at the Grand Galloping Gala! Who’d made the attire and why Pinkie had it were both mysteries, although she was sure of one thing - she was dumbstruck.
Adjusting the shoulder straps of her top, a frilly v-neck that gave an immaculate view of her cleavage, Pinkie giggled. “It’s not as nice as yours, but it’s only fitting that I wear something nice on our date.”
The singular word snapped Rarity from her stupor. “Beg your pardon?”
“Date!” Pinkie repeated. Traipsing over and locking one arm with Rarity, she used her free hand to begin boxing the cooling cookies. “I mean, yeah, even though it’s not a date date, we can still have a fun mares’ night ~ right?”
The proposal gave Rarity a moment for pause. On one hand, she’d planned on shutting herself away, feasting on snacks, and cursing her poor luck until she eventually fell asleep - on the other, having a bubbly and oftentimes bouncy distraction may be just what she needed. Shifting and helping Pinkie box the cookies, she came to a decision.
“I suppose you’re right,” she replied. “Just please don’t smuggle your party cannon with you. I swear, I’m still finding confetti in my shop after the last time.”
Hopping in place, Pinkie enthusiastically nodded. “Okey-doke-loke! I Pinkie promise, we’re going to have a great time - just you see!”
Rarity couldn’t help but smile. She adored and cherished each of her friends; Twilight Sparkle was a genius, Fluttershy was one of the kindest ponies she’d ever met, Rainbow Dash was bolder than most stallions, and Applejack was hard-working to a fault, yet Pinkie held a special place amongst them. The unassuming baker was a harbinger of joy, bringing cheer and good times wherever she went, and that, despite her having no true magic, was miraculous in and of itself.
“Ready?” Pinkie asked, balancing the box of cookies in her free hand.
Taking up the tub of ice cream, Rarity nodded. “As ready as I’ll ever be, Darling.”
No sooner did they walk out of Sugarcube Corner, with Pinkie shouting to tell Mr. and Mrs. Cake that she was going to be leaving early, then she found herself locked in a meandering conversation. Many ponies would have talked about the weather, recent gossip about town, or speculated on the mundanities of what the upcoming week would hold, but not them. Being two of the six Elements of Harmony, they waxed poetic about the adventures they’d shared, evils they’d overcome, and the perils they may face in the future.
“I have to ask,” Pinkie began, glancing around conspiratorially before bringing her snout to Rarity’s ear, “do you really think Discord and Fluttershy are - you know…”
Rarity chuckled and shook her head. “I would say that’s preposterous, but those two have been rather close lately. Just the other day, I caught the two having tea together ~ can you believe that?”
“No!” Pinkie gasped. “You don’t think he’s using some kinda weird chaos trick on her ~ do you?”
“I wouldn’t think so, no,” Rarity answered. “If Twilight had suspected such a thing, which is entirely possible, I’m sure she would have investigated it long before now…”
In no time whatsoever, continuing to speak about whatever came to mind, they’d completed their brief journey. Similar to Pinkie, who lived with the Cakes above Sugarcube Corner, her home was built into her business. Nestled in the back of the Carousel Boutique were a number of rooms for her and her sister, Sweetie Belle.
Seeing herself inside, she flicked on the lights and sauntered into the kitchen. “Sweetie’s away with Scootaloo at the Apple’s for the night, so we don’t have to worry about -”

Rarity was given no time to get a word in edgewise as she was led away. Pinkie knew her house as well as she did, having visited more times than she could possibly count, but that raised a question. As she was dragged along, barely managing to grab the box of cookies before she was led out of the kitchen, her eyes shot to the side.
“Pinkie, the living room is that way,” she remarked while they passed the den.
“Living room - pffft,” Pinkie glibly remarked. “Rarity, there’s only one place to have a mare’s night.”
It wasn’t hard for Rarity to figure out Rarity’s intentions. Led into her bedroom, she was released as her friend thrust the cookies into her hand, scampered to the closet, and set herself to work. Within seconds, her bed had been stripped clean - after only a minute or two, a fortress of linens, pillows, and cushions had been constructed on the floor.
Peeking out from the makeshift stronghold, Pinkie beamed. “You coming?”
Pinkie wasn’t a small pony by any means, being plump in the best of ways, so to see her work so quickly was astonishing. Tittering and without a care in the world, she disappeared behind a blanket wall. Seeing no reason to dither, even if it meant she’d be cleaning up crumbs in the morning, Rarity walked over and poked her head into the comfy little refuge.
“I was hoping to - Eeep!” she squeaked as Pinkie pulled her inside.
Shockingly and in defiance of reasonable explanation, the fort’s interior was immaculate. Pillows had been heaped up to make something like a loveseat, there were blankets, and her radio, something that had been in her living room, was sat to the side. Such a thing should have been impossible, not for the least of which reasons being Pinkie hadn’t left the room, yet there it was.
Hauling Rarity in and beside herself, Pinkie flopped back and sat down. “Much better.”
“Now that we’ve got that out of the way,” Pinkie hummed as she popped the lid off the container of ice cream, “we can get down to the important business.”
Rarity settled in and crossed her legs. “That being…?”
“When Dash is finally going to become the captain for the Wonderbolts, silly!” Pinkie clarified. Helping herself to a heaping helping of ice cream, she cleaned the spoon, gathered up a second, and offered it to Rarity. “Say Aaaaaaaah.”
“Pinkie, we have two spoo-Mmmph!” Rarity was cut off as the little mound of creamy sweetness was jammed into her muzzle.
She only chimed in to periodically give her thoughts or opinions on matters, content with the energetic and one-sided conversation. All things considered, things couldn’t have been better. It was nearly impossible for her to dwell on anything that had transpired before she’d trudged into Sugarcube Corner, it was getting harder and harder not to laugh or smile, and she actually felt nice - still, there was one thing that was odd. While the evening stretched on, she found herself more and more fixated on her friend.

Pinkie remained silent, not saying a word, then threw herself forward and snared Rarity into a hug. The move was fast, setting them off balance and leaving her atop the askance unicorn. With their bodies pressed together, hidden beneath the linens and away from prying eyes, they snickered, locked eyes, and went quiet.
Some things in life don’t make sense, happening purely by happenstance, and Rarity couldn’t understand what happened. One moment, she’d simply been embraced by a cherished friend - the next, she was craning her neck and expectantly pursed her lips. What drove her to take such an action was beyond her, as unknowable as it was confusing, yet it was quickly addressed.
