Lingering Thoughts

The air in the royal chambers felt heavy tonight, tinged with a strange stillness that Shining Armor couldn’t quite shake. The low flicker of candlelight danced off the crystalline walls, casting shadows that seemed sharper, more alive. He stood by the window, staring out over the dimly lit streets of the Crystal Empire- his new home, mind a tangle of thoughts he couldn’t unravel.

“Shiny?” Cadance’s voice broke the silence, soft and tentative. She was behind him, her presence a gentle warmth in the cold.

He turned to face her, his heart clenching at the sight of her. She looked as radiant as ever, her pink coat glowing softly in the golden light. Her expression was tender, —the look of a mare who had loved him through everything. But tonight, something felt off. Or maybe it was him. He couldn’t be sure anymore.

“You’ve been distant,” she said, stepping closer. Her voice wavered slightly, a hint of vulnerability breaking through her usual confidence. “Talk to me, please.”

“I’m fine,” Shining replied, a little too quickly. He turned his gaze back to the window, unable to meet her eyes for too long. “Just tired. I am sorry I have been a bit out of it the last few weeks. Moving here from Canterlot, ruling of the empire…. Changelings. Its been quite a month.”

Cadance sighed softly, her arms resting lightly on his shoulder. “You’ve been saying that a lot lately.” She paused, her touch lingering. “Let me help. I am the Princess of Love! ” She let out a laugh that felt a little forced.

Shining felt his body tense as Cadance moved closer, her muzzle nuzzling into the crook of his neck. Her scent, soft and familiar like roses on a summer breeze, washed over him, but instead of grounding him, it only deepened the ache in his chest. He wanted to relax into her touch, to let her love melt away the tension that had been building inside him. But every time he closed his eyes, he saw her.

Green eyes. A sultry laugh. Eyes that glowed with a predatory intensity. The glow of lust. He had insisted that she be taken to the Crystal Empire due to its older, more secure dungeons. It had seemed like the right thing to do at the time.

He shivered.

“Shiny?” Cadance pulled back slightly, her brows furrowing with concern. “Are you cold?”

“No,” he said quickly, shaking his head. “I’m fine.” He forced a smile, reaching up to cup her cheek. Her coat was warm and soft under his touch, but even as he touched her, he couldn’t banish the phantom sensation of harder skin, the memory of claws trailing down his back in a dream he couldn’t forget.

Cadance’s gaze softened, and she leaned into his touch, her lips curving into a small smile. “You don’t have to carry everything alone,” she whispered. “I’m here. Always.”

Shining’s heart twisted at her words. She meant them. He knew she did. But why, then, did her voice sound distant, her touch feel hollow? Or was it just him? She sounded the same as she always did but it felt like he almost registered the words wrong. Maybe he the one who had changed?

Cadance leaned closer, her breath warm against his lips. Her familiar kiss was tender, searching, a quiet plea for connection. He kissed her back, trying to lose himself in the moment, to focus on the mare he loved. But as her lips moved against his, his mind betrayed him.

It wasn’t Cadance he felt anymore. It was the other Cadance. The kiss deepened as he let himself fall into the illusion. His hands slid around her waist, pulling her closer, and he felt her shiver against him. But it wasn’t the soft, gentle warmth of his wife he felt. It was the fiery, commanding presence of a queen who had stolen her body and his mind once before.

This is how it should be,” a voice whispered in the recesses of his mind. Not Cadance’s voice, but hers. “You and I, together.

He crept his tongue into her mouth, he remembered it, long and snake like curling around his own. She feels so perfect. Cadance made a sound or surprise at the sudden shift in his mood.

Shining broke the kiss abruptly, his chest heaving as he came back to his reality. Cadance blinked up at him, startled.

“Shiny?” she asked softly, her voice tinged with hurt. “What’s wrong?”

“I’m sorry,” he muttered, stepping back. He couldn’t look at her, couldn’t bear to see the confusion in her eyes. “I just… I need some air.”

Before she could respond, he turned and walked out of the room, his heart pounding in his chest. As he stepped into the cool night air of the balcony, he gripped the railing tightly, his breath fogging in the chill of the crystal north.

it’s not the same. She’s not the same’

Inside, Cadance stood alone as she stared at the door Shining had walked through. Her heart ached with worry.

“Why doesn’t she feel like she used to?”

The whisper, faint but unmistakable, sent a shiver down his spine. He rubbed his temples, trying to force the voice away, but it lingered, curling around his thoughts like smoke.

He didn’t go back inside. Instead, he stayed on the balcony for what felt like hours. Long after the candles in the chambers behind him had burned he climbed into bed beside his wife and drifted off. He hoped his nightmares would not repeat themselves tonight.

He was in their honeymoon suite on the day of their wedding. He would remember this night for the rest of his life. The warm glow of the fireplace cast flickering patterns over the walls, and the soft hum of the city below filtered through the curtains. The bed was vast and inviting, its silky sheets tangled around him and the mare beside him.

Cadance.

She smiled at him, her eyes filled with love and mischief. Her mane spilled over her shoulders in soft curls, framing her face like a portrait. She was radiant, perfect—the Cadance he’d fallen in love with, untouched by the weight of everything they had been through in the last few months.

“You’re staring,” she teased, her voice a soft melody.

Shining chuckled, leaning closer to brush his lips against hers. “Can you blame me?” They kissed before breaking. Shining then jumped on her repeating his kiss over and over.

Her laughter filled the room, light and carefree. She pulled him down, her hands sliding over his shoulders, her touch warm and familiar. “You’re too sweet for your own good, you know that?”

Her lips met his again, and this time, the kiss deepened. The world outside the room faded away as Shining let himself sink into the moment. Her touch, her scent, the way her body molded perfectly against his—it was everything he had been yearning for.

The warmth of her touch turned sharper, her grip tightening around his shoulders. Her laughter, once soft and sweet, grew richer, darker, until it wasn’t laughter at all but a low, sultry hum.

Shining pulled back, startled, and stared into her eyes. For a moment, they were still Cadance’s—soft, violet, full of love. But then they flickered. Just for a heartbeat, they gleamed green.

He blinked, shaking his head, but the flicker was gone. She smiled at him, her expression tender and amused, as if she hadn’t noticed his hesitation. “What’s wrong, my love?” she asked, her voice low and soothing.

“Nothing,” he said quickly, though his heart was pounding. “I thought I saw something.”

Her smile widened, and she leaned in close, her lips brushing against his ear. “You’re imagining things. Relax. You’re with me. There’s nothing to worry about anymore. ”

Her hands slid down his chest, her touch growing bolder, hungrier. Shining felt his breath hitch as her lips moved over his neck, her teeth grazing his skin just enough to make him shiver. She looked up at him, eyes half lidded with a sly smile on her face. She reached down and stroked his cock, now erect. Shining moved away in surprise.

“Why doesn’t she feel like she used to” her voice whispered, though her lips hadn’t moved.

Shining froze, his mind reeling. “Cadance?” he asked, his voice shaky.

“Of course,” she purred, but her voice wasn’t quite right. It was deeper now, richer, dripping with suduction. “Who else would it be?”

He pulled back again, his gaze locking onto hers. This time, the green didn’t flicker—it burned. Her smile widened, revealing sharp fangs where there should have been none.

Shining stumbled back, his heart hammering. “No,” he whispered. “You’re not—”

“Oh, but I am,” she interrupted, her voice silk and venom. The firelight reflected off her form as it began to change. Her pink coat shimmered, darkening to a sleek, chitinous black. Her mane shifted, green and her eyes—those eyes—gleamed with triumph as she stood before him, no longer pretending.

“I’ve always been here,” Chrysalis said, stepping closer. “In your thoughts, in your dreams, in the quiet moments you share with her. Haven’t you felt it? The emptiness in her touch? The distance in her eyes? That’s because it isn’t real. None of it is.”

Shining tried to back away, but the bed was behind him, its silken sheets tangling around his body. “This isn’t real,” he said, his voice trembling. “This is just a dream.”

Chrysalis laughed, a low, throaty sound that sent chills down his spine. “A dream?” she echoed, her tone mocking. “Perhaps. Or perhaps it’s the only moment of clarity you’ve had in weeks.”

She reached for him, her hand brushing against his cheek. He flinched but didn’t pull away, his body frozen as her touch sent waves of warmth and cold through him.

“You’re tired of pretending, aren’t you?” she murmured, her voice softening. “Tired of lying to yourself. You know the truth, my prince. Deep down, you’ve always known.”

When Shining woke, he was drenched in sweat, his heart racing. The room was dark, the faint light of dawn just beginning to creep through the curtains. He sat up, rubbed his eyes, his mind spinning.

It was just a dream, he told himself. But as he glanced at the empty space beside him in the bed—Cadance already gone to her morning duties—he couldn’t shake the feeling of green eyes watching him from the shadows. That was Cadance he shared his bed with last night, right?
