Rarity sighed, gripping her phone to her ear for a moment when she heard the beep. She thought about what to say. What could she say? It’d been so long, how could she just break that silence with a message? Even a phone call was pushing the boundaries of common decency. This was the type of conversation that should be had face to face, but that as an option had yet to present itself. Rarity had to say something, anything, before it was too late. Something light, something open, something welcoming. Something to make the time and distance and bitter arguments feel like nothing. Something impossible.
Instead, Rarity just hung up and slipped her phone back into her purse. She could only imagine the looks she was getting from passersby; What sort of old, out-of-touch hag still used a physical cell phone? Anyone who was even remotely hip and up to date in the modern world had done away with such antiquities in favor of Sparkletech neural implants. Rarity had considered one, not too long ago, but she just wasn’t comfortable. She knew that this technology was Twilight’s baby, and she trusted that her friend wouldn’t ever release such a device to the public if there was even a fraction of a chance of something going wrong. Even still, whether it be an aversion to the doctor or just old-fashioned stubbornness, Rarity opted for a device she could hold in her hand, rather than one drilled into her skull.
It wasn’t a long trip, to get fabric from a nearby textile shop nor was it a strictly necessary trip. A delivery was due the next day, and the design currently being worked on wasn’t expected to be completed for another week anyway. Rarity could have just as easily closed up shop for the day, taken a rare sabbatical, and still be completely on schedule. And yet, even the thought of it made her uneasy. Rarity was the type of woman who needed to keep her hands moving to maintain any degree of sanity. She fit into Ponyville quite well, in that regard. The bustling metropolis, the so-called City of the Future, was never still. Just about every second of every day, Ponyville was busy and so, too, would be Rarity. She checked her watch. Twenty-five minutes before she needed to be back to the Boutique. Just enough time to nip over to Sugar Cube Corner for a coffee. With her fabric in tow, Rarity took off at a brisk jog down the busy, bustling Ponyville streets.
Rarity weaved and maneuvered through the sea of foot traffic, dodging zooming cars as she sped across the busy streets. She knew the city well, and could navigate the maze of industrial streets in her sleep. It only took a few minutes to make her way to the familiar coffee kiosk. Upon first glance, it was little more than a pristine white wall amongst the blocks of stands and shops lining the street. Set in the wall were a half dozen panels, like dumbwaiter doors, with a short line awaiting each. Rarity found the shortest line and was at the front of the line in a matter of moments. She tapped the panel, and it glowed with a bright pink light before emitting a friendly, bubbly, familiar voice.

Despite the changes in her life, it was nice to know that she could visit the local bakery and still hear her friend, just like the good old days. Rarity offered her watch, a Sparkletech device, to the kiosk panel. Once in range, the kiosk’s near-field communicator scanned Rarity’s watch, accessed her wallet, and withdrew the appropriate funds. The panel began to hum, one of Pinkie’s favorite tunes whilst baking, and thirty seconds later, there was a ding; The panel slid down, and in a small compartment behind it was Rarity’s order. Steam wafted from the coffee cup, and even the paper bag that held her scone. Rarity never really understood how such things were possible, for her order to be taken, processed, and prepared fresh in under a minute, all without her ever speaking to another person. Twilight had explained it at some point, before she had moved to Manehattan, but as far as Rarity was concerned, it was nothing less than modern magic.
Her breakfast in tow, Rarity made her way for work. Just three blocks north, and then one block east, and she'd be able to put her hands to work, and keep her mind out of the shadows. As soon as needle and thread were in hand, Rarity knew she'd be okay. She'd be alone, yes, but she could handle that loneliness. The metallic tick of her sewing machine would drown out the noise. Until then, distracted as Rarity was, it wasn't unsurprising to see her go three blocks north, then one block west, making it about halfway down the street before she realized that something was wrong, and it was only because she looked up to where her shop should have been and saw something very, very strange.

For a moment, Rarity couldn't process what was happening. Why was Sweetie suddenly there, standing in a random shop’s window display? Why was she nearly nude, save for some racy pink lingerie? Why did she seem so young, almost like when this whole ordeal between them had started? Slowly, as Rarity’s panic and anxiety began to fade, the details started to present themselves to her. There were seams that ran along the length of her arms and legs, two pieces that slid and locked into place to make one shell for each limb. Her eyes weren't truly eyes at all, but instead screens that played some digital facsimile of the genuine article. Her lips were a little too plump, her hips a little too curvy, her breasts a little too large. “Free upgrades after a year of ownership, plus a lifetime warranty. You could take her outside right now, twist off her head and ship the pieces back to the factory,” explained the shopkeeper. “They'll have her either repaired or replaced in 3 to 5 days.”
“You just have an answer for everything, hm?”
“I'm very good at my job.” The shopkeeper grinned. “So… Have I made a believer of you yet?”
Truth be told, he had a compelling case. If the situation was different, Rarity might actually consider it. A different model, of course, rather than the one built to resemble her sister. But with a date lined up later that very night and some amount of pride and dignity intact, Rarity had to decline. It was just as well, anyway. This wasn't the type of person she was. She didn't judge people for their private affairs, so long as no one got hurt, but buying any sex toy would be out of character for her, never mind a full sex robot. If no one else buys her by then, I'll even have her discreetly delivered anywhere in town, within two hours of your purchase. No additional charge.”
“Oh. Why, thank you.” Rarity took the card, narrowing her eyes at the shopkeeper. “You're being awfully generous about this. What's the catch?”
“The catch is I need someone to buy the thing,” said the shop owner with a smirk. “Before I cave and she ends up going home with me. Have a good day, and as always, it’s been my genuine pleasure.”
“Thanks. I don’t see myself changing my mind, but if I do, I’ll give you a ring.”
Rarity slipped the card in her purse, and slowly made her way for the door. Even as she left, her eyes were locked onto the robot. She shook herself firmly. That robot was not her sister, even if she looked like her. This wasn’t healthy. What Rarity needed was to get to work, get her hands moving, and keep her mind on her date tonight. That’s all she needed, something and someone to keep her mind from her troubles.
Unfortunately for Rarity, she always had a knack for holding on tight to her troubles, no matter how much she’d prefer to let them go forever.
“Unbelievable.”
This couldn’t be happening. Borderline impossible. It was statistically unfeasible. Rarity didn’t know the exact math, but she figured the chances of her setting up six dates with six different men, across six different weeks, and each of them suddenly being canceled at the last moment due to unforeseen circumstances, had to be astronomical. There had to be something that Rarity was missing. Spike had warned her that, in his experience, there weren’t any good men left in Ponyville, but Rarity knew that sort of talk. That was exactly the type of thing she would have said to her less romantically successful girlfriends in her younger years. Rarity could almost feel the pity in Spike’s attempts at consoling her, though she tried not to hold it against him. He was trying to be a good friend. It wasn’t his fault that no one seemed to be interested in her anymore.
“Dessert, ma’am?”
Rarity looked up, away from her pitifully lonely dinner, with confusion. After it had become clear that her date wasn’t going to be joining her, Rarity had decided that she couldn’t feel any more humiliated than she already did, so she went ahead and ordered anyway. She had sat alone throughout the night, dejectedly picking at her meal, but what she certainly hadn’t done was order any dessert. Yet, strangely, there stood her waiter, setting down a rather delicious-looking slice of chocolate cake.
“There’s been some mistake,” said Rarity quietly. “I didn’t order a dessert.”
“On the house. Sorry about your night. Just keep your head up, there’s plenty of fish in the sea.”
And with that, he left. Rarity checked her smartwatch and, sure enough, there was no record of the cake on her bill. She leered at the cake, a rich and luxurious devil’s food cake with a decadent chocolate frosting. Rarity’s absolute favorite type of overindulgent dessert. As she dug into it, she did so with bitter resentment. Bad enough that, apparently, the whole bloody kitchen staff noticed that she had been stood up, but even worse was that they saw the pathetic display and thought 600 empty calories would be just the thing for someone like Rarity.
Rarity ate the whole thing before she paid and left, which unfortunately proved them right.
Once her bill was paid, and she had left a sizable tip for her waiter, Rarity collected her purse, and set out of the restaurant with a scowl. Absolutely terrible night, but at least it wouldn’t need to go on too much longer. Now, it was just a matter of hailing a cab, riding home, and spending the rest of the night in a warm bath with a bottle or two of wine. Sadly, Rarity was actually looking forward to it.
As she stepped out onto the street, she collided with something in her path. With a grunt and a yelp, Rarity tumbled to the ground, the contents of her purse spilling out onto the sidewalk. Just barely noticed was the sound of another body hitting the pavement just a fraction of a second later. Rarity didn’t think, not with all the frustrations she had been trying to keep contained all night, and she snapped.
“You do have eyes, don’t you?” snarled Rarity. “Watch where you’re going, or is that too much…”
Rarity trailed off, partly because she knew she was being unreasonable. Obviously, the guy didn’t walk into her on purpose. Besides, it sounded as though he hit the ground just as hard as she had, so he had served his time, so to speak. Almost as important was the man’s strong jawline, his bold blue eyes, and his toned physique. Strong, but gentle, incredibly easy on the eyes; Rarity’s idea of a perfect man.
“Sorry, you’re right,” said the handsome stranger, shaking his head. His eyes darted to Rarity’s dropped belongings, and he quickly began to gather up her lipstick and various knickknacks. “I should’ve been paying attention. Just… Been having a bad day, my mind isn’t right.”
“There seems to be a lot of that going around. I’m sorry I snapped at you,” said Rarity with a sigh. “Nothing seems to be going my way lately, but I shouldn’t take it out on you.” She stood up, as did The Handsome Stranger, and he handed her most of her belongings, save for a few papers he had to stoop down again to pick up. She only had a moment to decide, but Rarity figured she had already hit the bottom. Why not shoot her shot? “If I could be so bold, maybe I could buy you a drink? Make up for being so rude?”
“A drink, huh?” The Handsome Stranger looked down at the papers he had collected for Rarity, just briefly, before his eyes shot back up and insisted upon looking anywhere but directly at Rarity. “Sorry, I’m kinda running late for something. Hope your night gets better.”
The Handsome Stranger practically shoved the papers into Rarity’s hands before bustling up the road in the direction he was originally headed, much to Rarity’s concern and confusion. What could have caused such a drastic change in his attitude like that? Rarity couldn’t fathom it, until she began returning her belongings to her purse, and she saw the very last thing that the man had given her.

Rarity palmed her forehead, just barely fighting the urge to scream to the heavens and demand to know why, God, why her? She was wrong, at the restaurant. Now she couldn’t possibly feel any more humiliated. This was rock bottom, truly. She somehow managed to find what was apparently the last decent straight man in the ginormous city, and still she found a way to scare him off. He must think she was some sort of pervert. Why else would a woman her age be prancing around with that card on her person? Slowly, as the weight of the failed night out, the embarrassment, on tonight of all nights, Rarity just sort of broke. She slowly pulled the card from her purse and, after inspecting it for a moment, decided that if that stranger thought she was a pervert, then she might as well actually behave like one.
At least for tonight. Call it a little gift to herself.
“I must be crazy,” sighed Rarity. Even still, she scanned the QR code with her phone, and put it to her ear. It rang for just a few moments before connecting. “Hello?”

By the time Rarity arrived home, Felix was already there. He was standing by her door, with a large box of super heavy-duty cardboard right beside him, much to Rarity’s horror; Anyone with a set of eyes would be able to see that a giant package from a sex shop had been delivered to her home and place of business. As she came nearer, however, she noticed the bevy of stickers and receipts stuck to the box, as well as the electronics store uniform that Felix wore. After unlocking the door, Rarity led the way up the stairs to her bedroom, while Felix wheeled the box behind her on his dolly. Rarity tried to tip him for being helpful, but he politely declined stating that—as always—it was his genuine pleasure.
Rarity waited until she heard her door close and Felix’s truck pull away before she went about opening the box. There was a little key near the bottom corner, somewhat similar to the ones you’d see on an old can of sardines, with a very similar purpose. Once Rarity had turned it and peeled much of the cardboard corner up, the box came apart in big, easy-to-move pieces, leaving just the robot standing there in her sexy pink lingerie. Rarity tried not to focus on that, instead looping around the robot’s back. She lifted the robot’s hair and, just as Felix had instructed, flipped the little black switch at the base of its neck. There was a low whirring as the machine powered up, with a panel of artificial skin sliding up and over to hide and protect the power switch.
“Hey there, cutie.” The robot slowly turned to face Rarity. Now that she was powered on, the screens in her face had lit up, displaying an approximation of Sweetie's beautiful green eyes. Stunning. “What's your name?”
It was surreal, to hear that voice again. Months, years without speaking directly with her sister, and yet, here she was before Rarity, in a manner of speaking. The voice was quite obviously recorded from the genuine article, although if you listened very closely, you could hear the impurities, the minor tone shifts on inappropriate syllables from the way her speech was modified for the robot's use. It wasn't enough to be a complete giveaway, but those who listened closely, and those who were deeply familiar with the real Sweetie, would be able to tell that something was amiss.
Despite that, Rarity didn't care one bit, because finally, she would be able to speak to her sister.
“R-Rarity. Rarity Belle.” The words caught on Rarity’s lips, and she reached forward with shaky, unsteady hands. She wrapped her fingers between The Sweetie Bot’s and squeezed gently; beneath the soft, warm, artificial skin, Rarity could feel the metal panels beneath, could feel the motors and servos actuating beneath the surface. Rarity squeezed a little tighter, and looked up into the screens that displayed The Sweetie Bot’s so-called eyes. “Your sister.”
“Saving data… Hi, Rarity!” The Sweetie Bot tilted her head and smiled, just like the real Sweetie often would. Even though Rarity knew what she was getting into, she still found the robot’s demeanor to be dangerously convincing. “How's my cute little sis doing?”
“Little?” Rarity shook her head. “I'm your older sister.”
“Adjusting settings. Saving data… Hi, big sis!”
“This is insane, absolutely mad…” breathed Rarity. She turned for the crate that The Bot had arrived in, searching through the foam padding and packing peanuts used to keep it safe in transport. “Surely there's a manual or something…”
“I can explain my functions and settings for you, if you'd like,” Sweetie Bot reported. Rarity nodded, and Sweetie Bot took a small step back, pulling free from Rarity’s somewhat desperate grasp. “I am designed to meet all of your sexual, romantic, and emotional requirements. I come equipped with programs to allow for dating, cuddling, and aftercare, and I am compatible with a number of accessories and devices.”
“Devices?”
“For instance, if you have a Sparkletech neural implant installed, I can be linked to it and, with your permission, access your vital signs and other metrics to more precisely attend to your needs. If you would prefer, I am also capable of less invasive scans.” Sweetie Bot “blinked”, the screens in her eyes flashing pale green for just a moment before returning to the static image of her pupils. “I'm not detecting an installed implant. Would you like for me to continue with the alternative scan?”
“Alright…” said Rarity carefully. “Scan away.”
Before Rarity could process what was happening, Sweetie Bot moved forward, and brought her lips to Rarity’s. The Sweetie Bot tasted vaguely of plastic and rubber, with an undeniable undercurrent of spearmint. Rarity froze, the mechanical lips and tongue paralyzing her. This was wrong. This was her sister. Except—and some part of Rarity could understand this—it wasn't. It wasn't even a person. It was a toy, a sex bot, a glorified fleshlight. And yet, somehow, Rarity found herself kissing back. The Sweetie Bot held her close, had Rarity wrapped around her finger, until it finally pulled away, wiping the smeared purple lipstick from the corner of Rarity’s mouth with a thumb.
“I'm detecting an elevated heartbeat,” giggled Sweetie Bot. “You must like me.”
“Sweetie…” Rarity could barely string together a thought, never mind a full sentence. Her mind was a mess, her heart thumping and her ears burning. She felt like she could soar, she felt like she could die on the spot. It was all too wrong to be right, but felt too right to be wrong. “You’re… We shouldn’t… I’m your sister.”
“Who cares? I want you, sis,” purred Sweetie Bot. It stepped forward, gently pressing her beautiful, heavy, marshmallow breasts against Rarity's comparatively more conservative bust. “Don’t you want me?”
She couldn’t. Rarity shouldn’t even be thinking about it. What was she thinking, buying a sex bot in the first place? Could she really be so lonely? So unloved? This whole thing was a bad idea, spurned on by stress. Her friends, scattered and living their own lives. Her family, strained and estranged. And when she finally puts herself out there in search of companionship, burn after burn after burn. It was understandable for Rarity to have such a desperate need for someone, anyone, to have and to hold.
But this wasn’t the solution. She should turn off The Sweetie Bot, stuff it back into its box, and pray that she could talk her way into a refund in the morning. It shouldn’t be hard, seeing as all she did was kiss it. That kiss flashed in her mind again, the most perfect kiss she had ever had. Better than any man or woman she had ever been with before, because, somehow, it felt so familiar. It felt like exactly what she had been craving, all this time. Someone close, someone who understood her. Someone like her sister.
Maybe she could still get a refund after one use.
“No. I don’t want you…” Rarity grabbed The Bot around the waist, and pulled her in close, closer than she had been with anyone in quite some time. So close that she could feel the gentle buzz of Sweetie Bot’s internal components, feel the warmth radiating between them. A spark. Just a robot’s inner workings? Or could it be more? “I need you…”
Sweetie Bot brought her lips to Rarity once again, tipping them both forward and sending them crashing onto the bed. In an instant, she was on Rarity, deftly unzipping Rarity’s dress and peeling it from her body, and tossing it aside. Sweetie Bot pulled away for a moment, looking Rarity over top to bottom. Her eyes passed over the simple, but no less excellently crafted and beautiful, lingerie that Rarity had been hoping to show off that night, and paused. That pause sent a spike of panic through Rarity’s very soul. She knew, better than anyone, that she wasn't as young as she used to be. Her last night with a partner—whenever that even was—proved that the march of time was visible on her body, even if she wasn't quite as old as she felt. For a split second, despite how little sense it would make, Rarity was afraid that Sweetie Bot was staring in the same way as her last date: turned off, second-guessing, and trying to think of a way out of this.

Any such concerns were immediately pushed from Rarity’s mind when Sweetie Bot dove back in with a hunger and passion that ran counter to the stereotypical behavior one would expect from a machine.
