A normal morning in the Flashlight Household
“Mmmm,” Dawn hummed, excitedly nibbling on the orange slices mommy had given her. Dawn loved oranges. They were even better Auntie Applejack’s apples! They were just so sweet and juicy! And she could make orange smileys with them, something that always made Soothing giggle.
But Dawn had to be careful not to eat them all before Mommy finished making pancakes. The only thing better than pancakes was pancakes with oranges on them! Apples were a close second, and chocolate was third! At least for Dawn. Chocolate was probably first for Soothing. Especially rock fudge, which was sorta like chocolate, only harder.
Speaking of her younger sister, Soothing was currently eating the apple slices mommy had cut up for her, occasionally sneaking small pieces below the table where Snowflake was currently hiding. Thankfully, said ice puppy had given up on trying to steal Dawn’s orange slices.
“Dawn, sweetie?”
“Hmmm?” Dawn asked, looking up mid-nibble. Mommy was looking at her with a small smile. She had a small bit of flour on her cheek from when Dawn and Soothing had helped her make the pancake batter (not Dawn’s fault), and more on the apron Daddy had gotten her that said “Princess of Deliciousness” (very much not Dawn’s fault).
“Can you go and wake up Daddy?” Mommy asked. “The pancakes are almost ready, and I know he’ll be hungry after all the training he did yesterday.”
Dawn’s orange-filled mouth broke into a massive grin. She LOVED waking up Daddy! It was probably her favorite chore!
She rapidly finished her fruit piece as she nodded. “Yes, Mommy! I can go wake him up!”
I wonder what instrument I should use!
Dawn jumped down from her chair, quickly gave Snowflake a quick pat on the head and Soothing a small hug, and then quickly dashed towards the kitchen door.
“And no musical instruments this time, please,” Mommy called out.
“Awwwwwww. Ok,” Dawn whined before running out the door at a slightly slower pace. She LOVED waking Daddy up with instruments. Especially when he did something silly! Like that time he got all wrapped up in the covers like a giant marshmallow! Or the time he flew straight up and almost bumped his head on the ceiling! But she also didn’t want to lose her dessert again. No amount of Daddy being silly could replace Aunt Pinkie’s cupcakes.
No, focus, Dawn. Mommy gave you a mission! Now if only my legs weren’t so short! When will I be as tall as Mommy? Or maybe Aunt Sparky? No, focus—
“Hi, Mr. Shield! Hi, Mrs. Spear!” she yelled at the two guards standing near the front door, giving a quick wave as she ran up the central staircase. “Can’t talk, need to wake up Daddy!”
“Good morning, Dawn,” the two ponies called in unison. Dawn was preeeeetty sure they were waving back at her, but she didn’t have time to look back and check. Her mission was more important.
She ran past the broom closet. She ran past her room. She ran past Soothing’s room. She ran past her art room. She (unfortunately) ran past the music storage room that the castle had made for her. She ran past the other broom closet.
Why do we have so many of those?
And finally, she skidded to a stop, right in front of Mommy and Daddy’s room.
Time to start my mission!
Slowly, quietly, she opened the door and peeked inside.
SNORT...Hock…Shooo…Honk…Shooo…
There!
On the bed was a big lump, and judging by that snoring, it was Daddy and not Aunt Sparky. He wasn’t awake yet. Dawn felt herself grinning excitedly.
Heheheheh. Sleepy Daddy.
Trying to be as quiet as possible, Dawn softly tip-hoofed her way over to the bed. The bed was big. Really, REALLY big! But Dawn knew how to get up on top of it. Flapping her wings and remembering all of her flight lessons, she leapt!
Her magic flowed excitedly through her wings, making her shudder in excitement as she soared through the air!
WHEEEEEEEEEE WAITTOOFARTOOFAR! Dawn thought, her joy giving way to panic. TOO MUCH MAGICCCCC! Her legs flailed as she accidentally flew over the entire bed, coming to a panicked sliding stop on the other side.
Oops. Too much power! My earth pony magic must be helping again. Silly magic. I only need pegasus magic right now!
Sticking her tongue out to help her focus, Dawn tried jumping again. This time, she managed to land right in the center of the huge bed. Success!
Dawn was so proud of herself, she did a little happy dance, flapping her wings excitedly.
Only for her pegasus magic to activate again and nearly send her flying off the bed a second time!
No, bad magic! No sending me falling off the bed! Dawn thought, quickly regaining her footing.
With that out of the way, she turned to her target. Daddy was still asleep, only the top part of his head sticking out of the covers. He was still snoring, a soft little rumble that he always did.
Good thing my flying didn’t wake him up!
“Oh, Daddy, time to wake uuup!” Dawn softly sang.
Daddy didn’t respond. His ears flicked slightly, but he didn’t wake up.
Now for the fun part.
“Welp, I guess I wasn’t loud enough. Soooooo…Rise and shine, Daddy!” Dawn exclaimed, jumping directly onto the snoring lump.
Bounce!
Dawn blinked, then tilted her head in confusion. Daddy was still asleep?
Hock…Shooo…
Yep, he was still asleep. Only one thing to do then!
JUMP MORE!
Bounce!
“Wake up!”
Bounce!
“Up and at em!”
Bounce!
Dawn’s eyes narrowed. Daddy was extra sleepy today. But she wasn’t going to let that stop her from doing the job Mommy gave her!
“Fine, then…” she whispered, trying to sound as scary as Aunt Sparky could be when she was telling ghost stories. And then, she jumped.
Bounce!
“That’s for not letting me be a clown five months before Nightmare Night!”
Bounce!
“That’s for not letting me play with your communication crystal!”
Bounce!
“That’s because I like bouncing on you, hehe!”
Bounce!
“That’s for all the fluffy animals in the world!”
Bounce!
“That’s because I’m trying to wake you up!”
Bounce!
“Why?”
Bounce!
“Won’t?”
Bounce!
“You?”
Bounce!
“Wake?”
Bounce!
“UP!”
Bounce!
“WAKE UP!”
SNORT!
Daddy let out a really REALLY loud snore. Dawn had cuddled with a napping Snowflake enough times to know that a snore like that meant ‘LOOK AT THIS LOVELY SLEEP I AM HAVING! NOTHING CAN WAKE ME UP NOW!’ It made Dawn frown, but she would not give so easily! Daddy and Mommy and Aunt Sparky never gave up, and neither would she!
Bounce!
“That’s because if this was a bedtime story you would still be reading it to me!”
Bounce!
“That’s because I like jumping on the bed!”
Bounce!
“That’s for not letting me read Uncle Spike’s big pony comics!”
Bounce!
“That’s because Mommy loves you and wants you to come kiss her!”
Hock…Shooo…
Huh, I thought that one would work. Oh well, BACK TO BOUNCING!
Bounce!
“That’s because Aunt Sparky loves you too even though she sometimes says she hates you!”
Love is really weird. I know Auntie Candance promised to explain it when I was older, but it’s still weird.
Bounce!
“That’s because you and Mommy won’t let me wear my Gala dress until the Gala!”
Bounce!
“That’s for going to bed so late!”
Bounce!
“That’s because you’re so tall!”
Bounce!
“That’s because you wouldn’t let me paint hearts all over the castle for Hearts and Hooves Day!”
Bounce!
“That’s for not letting me fly Mommy’s airship except that time I snuck onto it and almost crashed it into the castle!”
Really, how was she supposed to know that somepony forgot to turn off the engnie-thingy? All she did was push the big green button!
Bounce!
“That’s for not letting me practice my flying unless you or Mommy or Aunty Rainbow are watching over me!”
Bounce!
“That’s because I want to see how long it will take you to WAKE UP ALREADY!”
Bounce!
“That’s because it’s so hot outside today!”
Bounce!
“That’s because you love making puns!”
Bounce!
“That’s for covering me in bubbles when we were washing the dishes together last night!”
Bounce!
“That because you and Mommy wouldn’t buy me a white elephant plushy! I want my white elephant plushy!”
Bounce!
“That’s for not letting me wake you up with a violin!”
Bounce!
“That’s for not letting me wake you up with a viola!”
Bounce!
“That’s for not letting me wake you up with a cello!”
Bounce!
“That’s for not letting me wake you up with a bass!”
Bounce!
“That’s for not letting me wake you up with a double bass even though I don’t know if that’s different than a bass!”
Bounce!
“That’s for not letting me wake you up with a piccolo!”
Bounce!
“That’s for not letting me wake you up with a flute!”
Bounce!
“That’s for not letting me wake you up with an oboe even though I can’t play that!”
Bounce!
“That’s for not letting me wake you up with a clarinet!”
Bounce!
“That’s for not letting me wake you up with a bassoon!”
Bounce!
“That’s for not letting me wake you up with a prance horn!”
Bounce!
“That’s for not letting me wake you up with a trumpet!”
Bounce!
“That’s for not letting me wake you up with a trombone after I did it last time!”
Meanwhile, in Flash’s POV…
If you had told Flash that this was how he was going to be woken up in the morning…well, he probably would have believed you. Dawn was nothing if not extremely persistent and original when it came to waking him or Twilight up in the morning. Though even this whole experience had been a bit silly, even for her.
Bounce!
“That’s for not letting me wake you up with a tuba even though I can’t carry one!”
Bounce!
“That’s for not letting me wake you up with a bass drum!”
Flash was just glad that he forgot to take off his protection necklace last night. It was covered in all manner of defensive spells meant to keep him safe in case Dawn or Soothing had a bad magic surge, and one of said spells was force negation. Every time Dawn jumped on him, Flash could feel a small blip of magic around his neck reduce the force of her landing to that of a gentle pat. If not for this necklace, he would probably have a huge bruise already forming on his hip.
Bounce!
“That’s for not letting me wake you up with a triangle!”
Bounce!
“That’s for not letting me wake you up with timpani even though I can’t get them up the stairs!”
In truth, Flash had been well awake by Dawn’s third bounce. It was a miracle Dawn hadn’t noticed him waking up, especially given how confused he had been. However, once he realized what was happening, he had stayed still and pretended to be asleep just so he could see what silly things Dawn would say, and even threw in some fake snoring for authenticity. Plus, with how energetic both she and her sister could be, it was always a good idea to let either of them wear themselves out when the opportunity presented itself. Especially on the weekends.
Bounce!
“That’s for not letting me wake you up with the cymbals!”
Bounce!
“That’s for not letting me wake you up with a glockenspiel!”
The what? Flash thought, glad that Dawn had been so focused on waking him up that she hadn’t noticed him covering up his chuckling with more fake snoring throughout most of her bouncy rant. Is that even an instrument? And if so, why is that the one you’re thinking about right now?
Bounce!
“That’s for not letting me wake you up with a Bikelophone!”
Bounce!
“That’s for not letting me wake you up with a digeridoo!”
Bounce!
“That’s for not letting me wake you up with a yaybahar!”
Bounce!
“That’s for not letting me wake you up with a hurdy-gurdy!”
Ok, I honestly can’t tell if those are even instruments anymore or if she’s just making up random words so she can keep jumping on me, Flash thought with a silent chuckle. I think it’s time I stopped her.
But just pretending to wake up wouldn’t be enough fun. A little plan formed quickly in his mind. He shifted in the bed, moving enough that Dawn paused in her bouncing.
“Daddy? Are you awake now?” she asked. Flash hid a smile.
Yes, dear. I am. But I’m not quite ready to get out of bed yet. So, why don’t you join me?
He yawned loudly and overdramatically, stretching his wings and forelegs to their maximum extension.
“Yes! You finally woke up! Now come on! Mommy’s making pan—wait, wha—EEEP!!!”
Dawn’s victory cheer was interrupted as Flash rolled over, toppling his daughter off his chest and down onto his extended wing. Then, before she could react, Flash brought his other wing down on top of her followed quickly by both of his forelegs. With his prisoner secured, Flash pulled Dawn to his chest, wrapping her up snuggly with all four limbs as he cuddled her the way only a father could.
“ACK! HEY! Daddyyyy, stop! What are you doing?” Dawn protested, doing her best to struggle out of Flash’s grip. Alas, despite being an alicorn, she was still just a tiny little filly and not yet a match for Daddy Flash. Flash, for his part, let out a very fake yet very loud snore before pulling Dawn even closer.
“OH COME ON! THERE’S NO WAY YOU’RE STILL ASLEEP!” Dawn protested, squirming all the harder. But unfortunately for her, the only thing she could really do was to helplessly kick her hindlegs. Flash’s grip was perfectly practiced to handle wriggling fillies thanks to eight years of father-daughter cuddles.
Nothing makes a day better like hugging your overly excitable daughters, except for maybe full-family-cuddles. Even Tempest likes family snuggle time.
Just as Flash felt Dawn begin to calm down and give up on escaping his grasp, Flash heard the door to his room slowly open and a small voice call out.
“Sis? Is Daddy up yet? Mommy said the panny-akes are almost ready.”
“Soothing! Help!” Dawn cried out, her struggles renewing. “Daddy’s captured me and he STILL won’t wake up! I’ve tried everything but a musical instrument or magic!”
I don’t know about that, sweetie. Remember the time Aunt Sparky woke me up using a cup of ice cubes? Or when Mommy tickled me with her wings? Actually, I’m surprised you didn’t try that, Flash thought, doing his best not to laugh at Dawn’s overdramatic proclamation. Though I don’t think I will tell you that one. No need to give you any ideas. He kept still, waiting to see what Soothing would do.
After a moment of continued struggling from Dawn, the bed next to Flash sank slightly, indicating to him that Soothing had jump/climbed/hovered her way up onto the bed. Another moment passed before he felt a tiny hoof poke at his shoulder.
“Daddy?” Soothing’s adorable little voice asked. “It’s time to wake up. Can you wake up plese?”
Flash chuckled at that, prompting Dawn to go still. “Well, now how could I say no to a cute little filly who asked me so nicely?” he said, opening his eyes. Soothing’s own bright eyes greeted him, wide and blinking in confusion. Meanwhile, Dawn squirmed and craned her head to look up at him. Flash had seen that jaw-dropped expression enough times to know she was screaming ‘Wait, WHAT!?’ in her head as loud as she possibly could.
“And by the way, what in Equestria is a hurdy-gurdy?” he asked Dawn. The filly in his legs blinked, and Flash could see the moment the pieces fell into place in her eyes.
“YOU WERE AWAKE THE WHOLE TIME!?” Dawn screamed, causing Soothing to jump slightly in surprise.
“Not the WHOLE time, but for most of it, yes,” Flash said, gently booping Dawn’s nose with his own.
“But then why didn’t you get up!?”
“Because I wanted to hear what you were going to say, I didn’t want to get out of bed yet, and I wanted to get some snuggle time with my excitable little filly. Plus, now the pancakes will be ready when we get back to the kitchen.”
Dawn’s face scrunched up into an angry pout, though it didn’t stay there very long as Flash gave her a quick tickle with his wing.
“Hey! Hehehe NO FAIR HAHAHA! SOOTHING HELPHEHEHEHEHE!” Dawn squealed, trying her best to escape the feathers tracing along her belly.
“Very fair, given how many times you jumped on me,” Flash said, but he did pull his wing away as he sat up, keeping Dawn gently locked in his grip. Dawn stuck her tongue out at him, but when Flash kissed her on top of her head, she giggled and leaned into his embrace. He turned to Soothing, giving her a knowing smile. “Does my little snow flower want some morning hugs too?”
Said extra-tiny-alicorn gave a happy nod and practically jumped at Flash. In one swift move, he caught his daughter and slid her next to her sister.
“That’s not what I meant when I asked for help,” Dawn grumbled, though even she couldn’t resist nuzzling her baby sister as Flash adjusted his grip on them.
Just another day with two silly little fillies, he thought before his stomach let out a low growl. Ah, yes, food. Time for the SS Flash Sentry to take flight.
“Attention passengers,” Flash said in his best announcer voice. “This is your captain speaking. All passengers are now secured, and we are ready for takeoff. Our destination today is the kitchen, where the most amazing princess in the world is making us a wonderful pancake breakfast.” His wings began to beat, lifting him and his two now-very-excited passengers off the bed. “Please keep all limbs and ice dogs inside the vehicle at all times and enjoy the ride.”
And with that, he took off through the still open bedroom door. Even though he was only flying at a moderate pace, both of his little fillies let out excited squeals of joy as he soared down the hallway. Flash could already smell the pancakes Twilight was making, and between them and the joyful laughter of his daughters, he knew that today was going to be another wonderful day.
