Chapter 7: Within the Dark

The slow, steady rhythm of the heartbeat returned, and with it came a fragile sense of calm. Applejack didn’t know how long it had been gone, but she hadn’t realized how much she relied on it to keep herself grounded. The darkness still pressed in from all sides, suffocating and unrelenting, but the steady thrum gave her something to hold onto—a tether to keep her from completely losing herself.

The only other thing she had was the vibrant orange of her coat. Against the black void, it was the only light she could find, and she clung to it desperately. Her hoof reached up instinctively to adjust her hat, but she came up empty. That familiar, well-worn Stetson was missing.

"Figures," she muttered to herself. “Even my hat’s gone.”

She hated being alone. It wasn’t something she had ever consciously thought about before, but now that she was here, isolated and adrift, it was all she could focus on. She’d spent her entire life surrounded by others: her family, her friends, the bustle of Ponyville. Even when she worked on the farm, she always had the company of the orchard’s rustling leaves and chirping birds. But here, there was nothing but silence and the endless dark.

Yet she didn’t feel completely alone.

The warmth was what first tipped her off. She’d been so cold before—shivering as if the chill had seeped into her bones—but now, a soothing heat wrapped around her like a protective embrace. It wasn’t just physical warmth, either. It was something deeper, something that reached into her very core and eased the ache of her loneliness.

Applejack couldn’t pinpoint where it was coming from. It wasn’t Luna; she had felt the princess’s presence earlier, a brief flicker of light that had been pushed away by the suffocating blackness. No, this was different. It was subtle and steady, like someone standing just out of sight, watching over her without intruding.

The realization brought a flicker of comfort, enough to push back the worst of her fears. For the first time in what felt like hours—or maybe days—Applejack closed her eyes and let herself rest, trusting that whoever or whatever was out there wouldn’t let anything harm her.

As the morning sunlight streamed through the windows of her cloud home, Rainbow Dash stirred awake. She blinked groggily, her body still curled protectively around Applejack.

AJ hadn’t moved much through the night. Her breaths were steady but shallow, her face peaceful in sleep. Rainbow stared at her, the weight of the situation settling heavily on her shoulders.

She had promised to stay with AJ until she woke up, but as the hours dragged on, Rainbow couldn’t shake the gnawing guilt in her chest. She knew how worried Apple Bloom must be back at Sweet Apple Acres. AJ’s little sister was probably pacing herself into exhaustion, just like Rainbow was worrying herself into knots.

Still, Rainbow couldn’t bring herself to leave. The thought of Applejack waking up alone, disoriented and scared, was enough to keep her rooted in place.

Sighing, she reached for a piece of paper and a pen, scribbling out a note:

To the Wonderbolts,
Feeling under the weather. Won’t be at practice today. Back Monday.
—RD

Satisfied, she set the note aside and turned her attention back to AJ. Her mane was slightly mussed, her golden strands splayed across the pillow in a way that made her look softer, more vulnerable. Rainbow felt her chest tighten, a strange mix of protectiveness and something she wasn’t ready to name swelling within her.

“You really know how to keep a pony worried, don’t you, AJ?” she murmured.

Rainbow hesitated, then reached out a hoof to brush a stray strand of hair from AJ’s face. Her touch lingered longer than necessary, her heart beating a little faster as she pulled away.

“You’ll be okay,” she said softly, more to herself than to AJ. “You have to be.”

At Sweet Apple Acres, Apple Bloom paced the floor of her room, her small hooves tapping out an uneven rhythm on the wooden boards. Spike sat in the corner, watching her with a mixture of concern and exasperation.

“Apple Bloom, you’re gonna wear a hole in the floor,” Spike said, crossing his arms.

“I don’t care!” Apple Bloom snapped, her voice cracking with emotion. “It’s been too long! What if somethin’ happened to her?”

Spike sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. “Rainbow Dash said she’d look after her. You trust Rainbow Dash, don’t you?”

Apple Bloom stopped pacing and turned to face him, her eyes wide and glistening. “Of course I do, but I trust Applejack more! And AJ wouldn’t just leave without tellin’ me where she was goin’!”

Spike frowned, unsure how to comfort her. “I’ll send another message to Twilight,” he offered. “Maybe she can figure out what’s going on.”

Apple Bloom sniffled but nodded, her shoulders slumping in defeat. “Thanks, Spike.”

“Hey, it’s gonna be okay,” Spike said, placing a reassuring claw on her shoulder. “AJ’s tough. She’ll pull through.”

“I hope you’re right,” Apple Bloom whispered, her voice barely audible.

Back in Rainbow Dash’s home, the day wore on. Rainbow alternated between pacing the room and sitting at Applejack’s side, watching for any sign of movement.

As the afternoon sun dipped lower in the sky, Rainbow sat back down on the bed, her wing instinctively draping over AJ’s sleeping form.

“You’re not alone, AJ,” she said quietly. “Whatever’s going on, I’m here. And I’m not going anywhere.”

Applejack didn’t stir, her breathing steady and even. But somewhere in the dark recesses of her mind, she felt the warmth grow stronger, wrapping around her like a shield.

And for the first time since the nightmare began, she felt like she wasn’t truly alone.
