Overworked
Chapter 9: Knight in Wonderbolts Uniform
Previous ChapterThe void seemed endless, but Applejack wasn’t about to give up now. She had spent what felt like days in the suffocating blackness, searching for a way out, and now, a faint voice cut through the stillness.
"Apple Bloom? Is that you?" Applejack called out, her voice trembling with hope.
The words were muffled, distorted by the layers of shadow that surrounded her, but she could hear familiar notes of desperation in her sister’s voice. “Wake... up... Dash…”
Apple Bloom’s voice seemed to echo through her mind, tugging at something deep within her. Applejack clenched her jaw, focusing every ounce of her strength on breaking free. She pushed against the oppressive darkness, her legs moving as if trying to buck through an invisible barrier. But it wasn’t enough.
There had to be something more, something stronger, to help her shatter the dark walls trapping her. As she writhed and strained, another voice pierced through the void.
“APPLEJACK! WAKE UP! ME AND APPLE BLOOM ARE WORRIED ABOUT YOU!”
Rainbow Dash’s voice was unmistakable, sharp and clear like the crack of thunder during a storm. Applejack froze, her heart thundering in her chest as the words wrapped around her like a lifeline. For the first time since she had fallen into this darkness, a crack of light appeared in the void.
“Rainbow…” she whispered, her voice trembling with renewed determination.
The faint glow expanded, slivers of light cutting through the shadows. She focused all her energy on that voice, letting it guide her. She wouldn’t let them down. Not Apple Bloom. Not Rainbow. Not herself.
Apple Bloom clung to Applejack’s chest, her small hooves trembling as she pleaded through her tears. “Please, AJ, wake up. I need ya. We all need ya.”
Her sobs echoed through Rainbow Dash’s cloud home, making Dash’s heart ache. She wanted to comfort the filly, but she was barely holding it together herself. For three days, she had watched over Applejack, her worry growing with each passing hour.
When Apple Bloom’s pleas didn’t seem to work, Rainbow stepped forward. Her voice cracked, but she didn’t care.
“APPLEJACK!” she yelled, her wings flaring with emotion. “WAKE UP! ME AND APPLE BLOOM ARE WORRIED ABOUT YOU!”
She waited, her breath catching in her throat as silence filled the room. Then, slowly, Applejack’s body stilled. Her eyelids fluttered, and for the first time in days, she opened her eyes.
“Applejack?” Rainbow whispered, her voice barely audible.
Apple Bloom gasped, scrambling onto the bed as Applejack blinked groggily, her green eyes unfocused but alive. Relief washed over Rainbow, and she stumbled forward, her legs weak with emotion.
“Dashie? Is that you?” Applejack murmured, her voice hoarse.
Rainbow froze at the nickname, her cheeks flushing a deep red. “Uh, yeah. It’s me. You had us scared half to death.”
Applejack gave her a weak smile before a small, orange blur launched itself at her, wrapping her in a tight hug. “AJ! I was so worried! Don’t you ever scare me like that again!” Apple Bloom sobbed into her sister’s chest.
Applejack hugged her back, her movements sluggish but filled with love. “I’m sorry, sugarcube. I didn’t mean to worry y’all. Guess I pushed myself a bit too hard this time.”
A loud crash startled them as the door flew open. Twilight stood in the doorway, her mane disheveled and Spike clinging to her back. “WHAT’S GOING ON HERE?!”
Spike groaned. “Twilight, maybe next time don’t kick the door down?”
Twilight blinked, taking in the scene before her. When she saw Applejack awake and surrounded by her loved ones, she let out a sheepish laugh. “Oh... sorry. Didn’t mean to, uh, interrupt.”
Applejack chuckled weakly, her gaze shifting between her sister, Twilight, and Rainbow Dash. “Looks like I caused quite the fuss, huh?”
Rainbow smiled, the tension in her shoulders finally easing. “You think?”
Apple Bloom eventually pulled away, her tears drying as she sniffled. Twilight stepped forward, her magic gently lifting the filly onto her back. “Come on, Apple Bloom. Let’s get you back to Sweet Apple Acres. I’m sure your family will want to see you safe and sound.”
Apple Bloom nodded but glanced back at her sister. “You’ll be okay, right, AJ?”
Applejack smiled warmly. “I’ll be just fine, sugarcube. Promise.”
As Twilight turned to leave, she gave Rainbow Dash a knowing look and a sly wink. “Take care of her, Dash.”
Rainbow’s wings flared slightly as her face turned crimson. “Uh, yeah. Of course!”
Once they were alone, the room fell silent. Applejack shifted awkwardly, her eyes meeting Rainbow’s for a brief moment before looking away.
“So, uh... thanks for takin’ care of me,” Applejack said softly. “I know you ain’t exactly the cuddly type, so... it means a lot.”
Rainbow scratched the back of her head, her cheeks still flushed. “Hey, what are friends for, right? Besides, I wasn’t gonna let anything happen to you.”
Applejack smiled, her heart warming at Rainbow’s words. “Still... I owe ya, Dashie. Big time.”
Rainbow’s blush deepened at the nickname, and she quickly tried to change the subject. “Just, uh, promise me you won’t push yourself like that again, okay? You scared the feathers off me.”
Applejack reached out, her hoof brushing against Rainbow’s. “I promise. You’ve been more than a friend to me, Dash. I don’t think I coulda made it through without you.”
Rainbow’s heart skipped a beat at the touch. “Well, I couldn’t just leave you hanging, could I? You’re... important to me, AJ.”
Their eyes met, and for a moment, the air between them seemed to crackle with something unspoken. Applejack leaned forward, her muzzle brushing against Rainbow’s in a soft, tender gesture of gratitude and something more.
Rainbow froze, her mind racing. When Applejack pulled back, her cheeks were dusted pink. “Guess I better head home. Don’t want the family thinkin’ I’ve gone missin’ again.”
Rainbow nodded, unable to form words as her brain struggled to process what had just happened. She watched Applejack leave, the warmth of her touch lingering like a spark.
When the door closed, Rainbow finally let out a shaky breath. She flopped onto her back, staring at the ceiling with wide eyes.
“She called me Dashie again,” she muttered, a goofy grin spreading across her face. “And... did she just—?”
Rainbow groaned, covering her face with her hooves as her heart raced. “I’m so doomed.”
