Ancient Land, but not so ancient rulers
Weeks had passed since Queen Chrysalis had returned to Equestria, and weeks since she had been thoroughly bred by Sprout Cloverleaf. The three settlements have changed. It was hard to say if there were even three anymore. As far as the average pony was concerned, there was only the united love and devotion to their King. From his throne in Zephyr Heights, Sprout ruled just and fairly. His older self would’ve used this power and domination to conquer, ruling as some tyrant, but the affections he felt for and from his herd kept him in line. And it was this love that made him too tired to ever become a dictator. Opaline’s magic, and her many potions, have granted him a body more akin to an alicorn. But unlike the old world, where only pegasi or magical spells could allow one to walk on the clouds, these clouds were modified with potions and magic, making it possible for everyone to walk on them. This caused the pegasi kingdom to become the largest of the three settlements, and thanks to the use of clouds, many non-pegasi were moving to the mountain. This wasn’t uncommon between the three settlements, only adding how multi-cultural they were becoming.
The Bridlewood was the smallest to develop. This came from the unicorns, as a majority, having a preference for the trees. But it wasn’t long before spells of such forestation was given, or rather, re-discovered. In under half a year, the Bridlewood expanded and grew to the point where previously inhospitable and barren lands were now part of this great forest. And as the trees were grow through this magic, the unicorns shaped and warped them, almost crafting them into greater homes, and magnificent facilities. The development of magic, to understand its deeper mysteries became a subject of interest to the unicorns for the first time in centuries, and Opaline was more than happy to help guide them, commenting how this was considered mundane back in her ancient home of Skyros, and so, when she wasn’t servicing her king’s cock, she was teaching unicorns of all ages greater knowledge of the lost arcane.
Maretime Bay, where it all began, such the greatest growth. Being the home of the King, it became practically a place of pilgrimage to the many ponies. The training and studying paid off. Though there wasn’t a lot of knowledge regarding the history of the Crystal Empire, the scholars managed to uncover enough to get a better understanding of its location. The pegasi selected were the finest and strongest flyers. And the earth ponies assigned were strong and ready to serve. This expedition team was perfect, and Sprout couldn’t think of anyone other than Sunny to lead them. But once she was there, she used her magic to expand on this small flicker. It grew, stretching, cracking a little until it was more like an opening in a massive, city spanning barrier. One she managed to pierce through, at least enough to step in, Sunny’s eyes dazzled with a glimmering splendor that nearly rivaled the sights that were before her. Spirally towers of great crystals and metals she had never seen before. But as she and her expedition team walked into this barrier, another sight caught her eyes, one she did not expect; ponies, ponies made of crystal, but armed and seemingly ready to confront her and her team.
“Halt!” Called one of the guards. Raising their weapons, they presented them to the strange ponies entering their domain. “State your business!”
“Hello, my name is Sunny Starscout, from Maretime Bay, Equestria.” Sunny greeted, smiling so much, she spread her wings in her excitement. “Is this the Crystal Empire?” The crystal guards said nothing, only shocked by the sight of this alicorn.
The crystal guards whispered something for a while, muttering here and there about this alicorn, but then a shadow fell over them. Landing in front of them was an alicorn mare. She was pinkish white in color, with a swirl of pink purple and blue mane. She was dressed almost like Opaline would, with some type of royal regalia. The guards seemed to be even more concerned when this alicorn came, as did a more middle aged looking white unicorn mare with a two tone blue mane, all while dressed in a full set of armor. The crystal guards seemed even more tense with her arrival than when the alicorn arrived, but Sunny remained optimistic, studying the expressions on their faces. The alicorn looked only a little older than her, but the unicorn looked old enough to be Sunny’s mother.
“Forgive the caution. We have been sealed away for many years, and haven’t seen another pony, let alone an alicorn in even longer.” The unicorn greeted, speaking directly, as if she was examining Sunny. “You can call me Gleaming Shield, and this is my daughter, Flurry Heart.”
“Gleaming Shield…Flurry Heart…wait, wait. Yes, I know who you are!” Sunny said, getting a little too excited. “You’re the sister…and niece of Princess Twilight Sparkle!”
“We are.” Flurry replied, though she seemed to have less patience than her mother. “You don’t seem to be some enemy. We could sense you on the borders of the Empire for miles. But you still managed to force your way into the barrier.”
“Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to offend.” Sunny said, bowing her head respectfully. “When we were told where to find the Empire, and there wasn’t anything in sight, I figured there was some magical barrier, and you can imagine my surprise when I-”
“Someone told you where to find us?” Gleaming asked, interrupting the mare. “Who could’ve possibly told you about the Crystal Empire? We have been sealed away for too long for anyone to know about us.”
“Oh, well…” Sunny hesitated to respond. Though Chrysalis gave her some instruction, among them was the one to never mention her name if they managed to find the Crystal Empire. The changeling didn’t elaborate as to why, but now the alicorn realized she might’ve said too much. “What I mean is…um…it’s a little awkward. Maybe we could talk more, not right on the border?”
“No, I think you’re going to stay right there until you explain yourself.” Gleaming said coldly, her guards steadying their weapons even more than before. “Now, let’s start from the beginning, and then depending on your answer, we might have a problem.”
Sunny swallowed nervously, her mind finally remembering something she should’ve realized before. Chrysalis’ attack on Canterlot was a major, historical event, especially as it took place between the royal wedding of Princess Cadance and Gleaming Shield, and then her second attempt that saw the abduction of major Equestrian leaders. It was all but common knowledge to the historians of the old Equestria that the Crystal Empire saw the Changeling Queen as an enemy. There was no way that she was going to be able to explain herself without causing an issue. But now it was too little, too late. She was in a situation where she would have to tell them what she knew, and could only hope that they would listen to her.
“Before we begin, how about you start with explaining this?” Flurry commented, igniting her horn. Immediately, a thread seemed to come from Sunny’s horn, leading out of the barrer. The thread then was cut by an invisible for. “There, whoever was using you to spy on us can’t see us anymore.” Sunny’s eyes went wide, she had no idea anyone was watching her, possibly with scrying magics.
At the time this happened, scrying from her cauldron, Opaline was annoyed that the connection had been severed. Flurry wasn’t wrong to be suspicious about Sunny’s intentions with such an enchantment attached to her, but it was still a means for the alicorn to track her fellow alicorn's movements. Shaking her head, she still had enough information where, if need be, she could send more ponies to search for Sunny. As well as this, she was surprised. From the way Chrysalis described it, Opaline expected the mare to come across some ruins, but clearly the Crystal Empire had somehow managed to endure, and even thrive in their magical isolation.
“Anything new?” Izzy, walking in the room, asked. “It’s milf night, Sprout is currently with Haven, Chrysalis, and his mum, so he’ll be busy for a while.”
“Well, if you must know, Sunny found the Crystal Empire.” Opaline replied, not looking as the unicorn eagerly skipped over to look in the cauldron. “Problem is, it seems Chrysalis was wrong about the empire being in ruin.”
“Really?” Izzy asked, looking into the cauldron. “Um…there’s nothing there.”
“That’s the second problem.” Opaline commented with a sigh. “They seemed to have noticed the scrying spell I placed on Sunny to keep track of her, and so now with it severed, I don’t know what they’re talking about. So we can only hope that Sunny doesn’t say anything too troublesome.”
“I’m sure it’ll be fine.” Izzy replied with a cheerful smile. “We both know she’d never say anything that could cause problems.”
“We’ll see.” Opaline pondered, thinking a little to herself. ‘Hopefully, she’s thinking of a way to bring the Crystal Empire into the rest of Equestria; especially under my King’s rule.’ Staring at the cauldron, she felt a sliver of worry. ‘Sunny, you better not mess this up.’
“Well, I hope whatever happens, we can make friends with them.” Izzy giggled. “I’m sure it’ll be fine.”
“What are you talking about?” Pipp, who just so happened to be walking by, asked as she looked into the room. “I guess it was milf night, so I couldn’t get with Sprout, and Zipp was also busy, so I was wondering what you're all up to.”
“Sunny found the Crystal Empire, and there’s ponies living there!” Izzy blurted out before Opaline had a chance to answer. “So now we just have to wait.”
“Really? The Crystal Empire was still intact?” Pipp asked with a curious eye. “Well, I hope we can make friends with them. I can only imagine what a place called the Crystal Empire would look like. I wonder how dazzling it is.”
“We’ll have to see.” Opaline sighed, rubbing her temples as she stared into the still waters of the cauldron. “Hopefully, as an alicorn, Sunny will be able to at least explain everything before it gets worse.”
About a week had passed since Sunny first made contact with the ancient Crystal Empire. Sprout, along with Pipp and Izzy, were on their way there. Thanks to Opaline and Zecora, who were disguising themselves among the many scribes, scholars, and soldiers that were accompanying him. Once the border of the Crystal Empire was in sight, the stallion prepared himself. He had heard little from Sunny, only that she had managed to convince Gleaming and Flurry to have a meeting, but only at the border of the empire. He was incredibly nervous about all of this, but he was thankful that Sunny was at least safe. Once the border was getting closer, he mentally prepared himself. From what Chrysalis had told him, Gleaming was clever, but quick to doubt and worry, while Flurry was fierce, but young and full of hopeful ideals she learned from Twilight.
Arriving at the border, Sprout, along with his entourage entered the silver that served as an entrance to the Crystal Empire. Once past this sliver, the stallion saw that Gleaming and Flurry were waiting for them. Standing there, Sunny and her own group at her side, as well as possibly dozens of crystal pony soldiers. Still nervous at such a sight, Sprout was happy to see Sunny again, and so felt a little more comfortable that these mares were reasonable. Approaching them, he bowed in a show of respect, something that Gleaming and Flurry did in return. Pipp and Izzy walked at his sides, but Opaline and Zecora remained hidden. There was no need for either of them to reveal themselves, not yet. Flurry and Gleaming looked this new group over, and the unicorn understood why even more guards were brought. Clearly, this was the Sprout Cloverleaf that Sunny had mentioned.
“Greeting, Sprout Cloverleaf.” Gleaming greeted. “I am Gleaming Shield, and this is my daughter, Princess Flurry Heart.”
“A pleasure.” Sprout nodded, smiling warmly at the mares. “I am grateful for this meeting, and I have to say, your Empire is gorgeous.”
“Thank you, but we did not allow this meeting for pleasantries.” Gleaming said, gesturing to Sunny, who walked over to Sprout, along with her group. “Your emissary said you were interested in meeting with us, and want to bring the Crystal Empire back to Equestria.”
“Yes, that is correct.” Sprout commented, hugging Sunny, kissing her cheek tenderly. “I understand that the Equestria that exists out there is far different from what you remember, but I promise that this is an alliance.”
“I would hope so. I do not want a pointless war.” Gleaming commented, her tone almost speaking coldly as she stared at the stallion. “But before we can continue…Flurry…” Looking over to her daughter, she nodded.
“I would not resist this, if I were you.” Flurry said, stepping forward. Spreading her wings, she ignited her horn. “Before we can allow you any further, I will see your intention.”
The spell that the alicorn cast spread out across Sprout, Pipp, Izzy, and the others that were with him. It was a brilliant pink shade in color, washing over them like a sweet smelling aura. A warm feeling tingled throughout their bodies, and it was only a few moments later as the spell worked itself over the large group of ponies. Eventually, the spell faded, returning to Furry’s horn. Pausing for a moment, she seemed to be pondering something before walking back over to her mother. The two whispered something as they occasionally glanced back over to Sprout, who stood there curiously. After a few more moments, the two seemed to finish their discussion.
“My apologies, but my daughter has a special talent for sensing the intention of others.” Gleaming explained, looking at the group with a small smile. “And she has sensed that your intentions are pure, and you are sincere in your words. So we may speak.”
“Thank you, I’m truly grateful.” Sprout commented. “Should we have our negotiations now?”
“Now that you are a little more trustworthy, we can wait a little before we can discuss the future of the Crystal Empire and Equestria.” Gleaming commented. “For now, you’re free to walk the Empire, and see our city.”
“Thank you.” Sprout commented, looking at Pipp and Izzy. “We’ll join you in just a moment, I would like to speak with my advisors first.”
“Of course, take all the time you need.” Flurry added, sounded a lot more cheerful than her mother. “If what Sunny said about you is true, I know it’ll be okay.”
“Actually, I would love to interview the two of you.” Pipp said, speaking up and stepping forward. “There’s practically nothing about the Crystal Empire back home, and I know it would be amazing to interview you two to bring back home.”
“I don’t see a problem with that.” Flurry said, looking at Gleaming, who seemed a little more uncertain and hesitant, but didn’t refuse. “Let’s do it at the castle. I’m sure that’ll do.”
“That would be great.” Pipp smiled, fluttering her wings playfully. “Izzy, could you help me out?”
“Sure.” Izzy replied, grabbing a large saddle bag, following after the pegasus. “We’ll see you at the castle.”
With the two of them leaving with Gleaming and Flurry, the crystal guards slowly dispersed, spreading about and resuming their normal guard duties. Now somewhat a little more alone, Sprout approached Opaline, who was the one who seemed the most eager to speak with him. The alicorn’s disguise was still good enough, and it was amazing that she was able to hide herself from Flurry’s spell. Whether it was because she was a stronger alicorn, or maybe the Princess’ spell sensed intentions, and while Opaline, along with the other mares intended to bring the Crystal Empire into Equestria, and by extension, under Sprout’s rule, they were pure in their beliefs. Still, Sprout stood in a way to somewhat hide the older alicorn from anyone’s sight.
“So, how do you think it went?” Sprout asked the alicorn, looking over his shoulder a little. “Do you think it worked?”
“We’re in, so that is very important. And with Pipp and Izzy going to speak with the two more directly, things should go well.” Opaline explained, but it was clear that there was somewhat of a worried look on her face. “But Gleaming Shield isn’t to be underestimated.”
“What do you mean?” Sprout asked, thinking at how Gleaming looked at the ponies. “I know she was looking at us with a little hesitation, but she seems fine now. And Flurry’s spell put her at ease too, didn’t it?”
“It gave us the chance to walk the city, but do not think for a moment that Gleaming has fully trusted us yet.” Opaline stated, keeping her voice to a whisper. “Her daughter’s spell isn’t perfect, and she’s no doubt aware of it. So she has given us the benefit of the doubt, but that doesn’t mean we have as much freedom as she makes it out to be.”
“She is right, and this advice should be heeded.” Zecora added, speaking up a little besides Opaline. “Gleaming is kind and caring, but do not think we can walk through this empire unimpeded.”
“So this was just a way to somewhat make our basic intentions known. But now we are going to be watched to see what we do with the ‘trust’ we’ve been given?” Sprout asked, to which both mares nodded. “Okay, well I can understand their logic. They’ve been sealed away for who knows how long, and no doubt they’ve been worried over what Equestria has become. But it should be fine. We came here to make peace anyways.”
“Agreed, we are here to make peace, and I know you and Gleaming should get along well.” Opaline nodded, letting Sprout turn to leave, content in this comment. But once he was out of earshot, she whispered to Zecora. “But the saddlebag Izzy brought with her. Will it work? We will only have one chance for this.”
“It will work, I promise that this kingdom will be our master’s greatest treasure.” Zecora hummed quietly, looking out as Pipp and Izzy in the distance, along with Gleaming and Flurry. “I only worry about the effectiveness, as who knows how long either have gone without great pleasure.”
Within a private room within the crystalline castle, Gleaming and Flurry were sitting with Izzy and Pipp, who were setting up a camera. The royal mares sat calmly, though it was clear the alicorn was a little more eager about this than her mother was. But once the camera was set, a recorder was placed on the table, and while Pipp was seemingly doing something with her phone, Izzy was placing some red candles on the table, and lighting them. It was all very strange, but since none of this seemed to be aggressive or hostile, Gleaming said nothing about it, and Flurry was becoming more interested in Pipp’s smartphone, something that didn’t exist back in her time.
“Is this all really necessary?” Gleaming eventually asked. “We’ve had interviews before, but this feels…I don’t know, a little excessive.”
“Oh, no, no, no. This is actually the bare minimum.” Pipp said, doing some practice shots with her phone. “It’s all about the lighting. This is the first time anyone has seen a crystal pony, and we wanna learn all about the kingdom.” Before the royals could respond, the pegasus seemed to be content, and began her recording. “Hello to you, my adorable Pippsqueaks, and everypony in Equestria! Today, we have an exclusive interview with Gleaming Shield, and Princess Flurry Heart, two ancient rulers of the fabled Crystal Empire! So tell us, how have you managed to survive in isolation for so long?”
“Well…for starters, there’s been some misunderstandings.” Gleaming said, a little caught off guard by the mare’s excitable introduction. “Flurry and I have only been here for a few years, though the majority of the citizens have lived in isolation for perhaps centuries.”
“Really? Well, that is unexpected.” Pipp said, continuing the interview, which gave Izzy, who had brought a couple bottles of the special potion, and letting her leave without being noticed. “How did that happen?”
“It was Princess Twilight.” Flurry explained, sounding a little prideful. “She was curious what the future of Equestria would be like, so she peered into the future.”
“That is correct, and since both Flurry and I wondered what the future of the Crystal Empire would be, we ventured through a rift of time and space, arriving here an untold amount of time in the future.” Gleaming added, sounding a little saddened. “Unfortunately, it was a one way journey, and we’ve been here for several years now.”
“Oh my, that…I’m sorry to hear that.” Pipp said, looking sorrowful at the two. “Well, Equestria welcomes you back, and we’d love to open up relations with the Crystal Empire.”
“That would be great, but I guess we’ll have to just speak with you…is he a Prince…a King?” Gleaming asked, pondering for a moment since Sprout wasn’t exactly called either term. “I understand that Sprout Cloverleaf is the leader of a new, united Equestria?”
“Oh yes, Sprout had done so well to unite the three tribes again. The earth ponies of Maretime Bay, the unicorns of Bridlewood, and even my mum, the queen of Zephyr Heights.” Pipp explained with a prideful smile on her face. “Myself, along with my sister, Izzy, the unicorn you met before, as well as Sunny, and many, many more mares have become part of his royal harem.” Both Flurry and Gleaming blushed a little at the term.
“I…I see…” Gleaming said, clearing her throat as she was composing herself. “It seems much has changed.”
“Speaking of, where is Izzy?” Flurry asked, just noticing the unicorn was gone. “I could’ve sworn, she was just here a second ago.”
“Oh yes, she went to get Sprout. But I wanted to have this interview with you two before he arrives.” Pipp answered, making sure to wink at the camera. “Now, before this historic event happens, why don’t the two of you tell me about the history of the Crystal Empire.”
As this interview was continuing on, both Gleaming and Flurry were unaware that the candles that burned produced more than just light. They were a special set created by Zecora, laced with a sweet smelling herb that made their bodies feel more relaxed, and the more they talked, the more their minds were unaware of the slowly growing influence that was making them more suggestible. If Gleaming was a little more cautious, she would’ve noticed that she was talking in his interview far more than she normally would about the history of her kingdom, and Flurry was just so happy to learn about what has happened to Equestria, she failed to notice as well.
Walking along, seeing the many sights and sounds of the Crystal Empire, Sprout was marveling at it. The splendor, the sheer, ancient looking grace and beauty of an empire entirely made of some crystal and stone. Even the ponies were of the same crystal, many being almost partially transparent.
