“I already have tickets to a concert next weekend,” the filly reminded her. “That's too soon to bring my grades up, whatever ‘up’ means. I can still go to that right?”
“I'm afraid not,”she sighed derisively. You should have thought of that and focused on your studies before this conflict arose.”
“Seriously?” She looked to her father for a long shot veto or some kind of curtail of the sentencing at least.
“I'm sorry Diamond,” he shrugged but you've just brushed this off for too long. You really do need to take your schooling more seriously. If your grades drop too low we won't even be able to buy you into a good college.”
Diamond looked back at her smug looking mother but lacked the bravado to shoot her the icy glare she wanted to. “Fine.”
“That will be all, Diamond,” said her mother pompously. “Perhaps we can reassess your grades in a couple of weeks and take you off restriction if you have, at very least, Bs in all classes.”
The filly gritted her teeth, spun around and marched angrily to the stairs as her parents began to quarrel behind her.
“Let's just shoot for no longer in danger of failing for right now to get her ungrounded sooner and then we can worry about being exceptional later,” argued her dad.
“We've been far too soft on her,” retorted her mother dismissively. “If we want her behavior to change we need to lay down the law and she needs nasty consequences for her actions.”
Diamond galloped up onto the landing and flew to her room. She flopped upon the posh comforter of her four poster bed and gnashed her teeth in aggravation. “Evil bitch,” she growled. She'd been looking forward to that concert for months. Her mother knew that. She was always looking for a way to make things harder for her. Life would be so much easier without her.
She rolled over onto her back with a huff. It was then that she became reacquainted with the wetness between her thighs and realized that her unwanted ember of arousal had yet to fizzle out on its own. She let out a defeated sigh and parted her legs before slipping a hoof down between them. Diamond stormed past her, marching down the sidewalk toward school. “My fucking mom,” she growled, shooting a glare back at the mansion almost expecting to see Spoiled smirking down at her from the second story window. “Not only am I grounded but I can't even go to the concert now!”
“Are you kidding?” gasped Silver in dismay.
“No I'm not and you had better not even think about going without me,” Diamond threatened menacingly.
Silver Spoon hung her head in despair. “Ugh… shit… this is the worst thing that's ever happened to me.”
“Well at least you're not grounded on top of it.”
Diamond brooded in her desk for the first two periods of school. The so-called consequences for her actions were unfair and she craved retribution, but how would she get it? Historically she'd enacted a policy of guerrilla warfare and striking from the shadows against her mother, opting to take actions that would look like bad luck and not calculated reprisals that would just escalate their disagreement.
She might be able to flout her grounding and escape for the night to go to the concert but the chances of her doing it without being discovered were slim. She'd have to leave home before dark. They'd know she was gone and then she'd be in deep shit. Would it be worth it?
Her brain was fully occupied with these questions out the door and all the way down the street to the enormous oak tree library which was also inexplicably the home of Twilight Sparkle. Unlike revenge, Diamond hadn't given the field trip any thought at all. What was she supposed to do at a stupid library anyway?
“He looks so bored with her babbling continuously in his ear,” muttered Silver as she watched Sweetie and Rumble enter the library in front of them.
Every student was allowed to check out three books and then return them to Cheerilee when they were done with them. For most of them this was at least mildly exciting because the Golden Oak Library had a much bigger collection than that of the school. The foals broke up into their default friend groups to meander around the stacks of books. Diamond yawned as she lazily tailed Silver Spoon who was eagerly searching, for what she didn't know.
“You should pick out some books even if you're not going to read them,” suggested Silver. “That way you can at least give off the appearance that you want to learn and maybe ingratiate yourself with the teacher who holds the keys to your grades.”
“That's actually a smart idea," agreed Diamond.
Silver looked back at her with put-on braggadocio. “Of course it is. You didn't think my glasses were just for show all this time did you?”
Silver took them down the romance aisle and began to peruse there. As she pulled one title off of the shelf she became aware of movement beyond it. Her eyes flicked up to look through the gap just over the tops of the books into the next aisle where Scootaloo and Button Mash were locking lips passionately to the tune of muffled sighs. Unlike Sweetie Belle, Scootaloo looked like she was probably up for anything if the opportunity arose.
“Pervert,” whispered Diamond in her ear before turning to watch too. How far would the two of them be going in an open library on a school field trip, the both of them wondered. Their question was soon answered as they broke away from one another, panting and flush-faced, before exiting the aisle.
Silver braced her hooves on the wall of housewife smut before her. “I am wasting my teen years,” she muttered. “I'm prettier than Scootaloo and don't have chastity hangups like Sweetie Belle and I'm richer than both of them put together… at least my parents are. I should have a coltfriend.”
“I think Snips and Snail are single and looking,” Diamond suggested sarcastically.
“I have standards ,” grumbled Silver indignantly.
“Picky picky.”
Silver was unable to resist grabbing a country girl in the big city romance before they left the section and moved on.
“Cheerilee will be really impressed if I check this out,” quipped Diamond, holding up a book on quantum mechanics.
Silver scoffed and looked past her to the wall at the end of the aisle. She pointed over her friend's shoulder. “Hey, look.”
Diamond turned around to see a door with a placard that read Restricted: No Admittance.
That was interesting. The word restricted was particularly provocative, more so than just saying Staff Only. A room that said Staff Only surely contained office supplies and cardboard boxes of holiday decorations but one that said Restricted made one ask a question.
“What do you think is in there?” whispered Silver.
“Maybe that's where Twilight keeps her porn stash,” suggested Diamond dryly.
“It's probably dangerous stuff like spells and potions. Forbidden knowledge.”
Diamond shrugged. “There's only one way to find out. She looked both ways at the opening of the aisle to make sure no one was coming and then approached the door. The handle turned easily when she put a hoof on it and the door clicked open.
The two exchanged surprised glances.
“Ooh,” cooed Silver in excitement.
“How good can it be if it's unlocked?” asked Diamond.
“Maybe she just forgot,” answered Silver hopefully.
“Come on.”
The two hurried inside and shut the door behind them, immediately snuffing out all light in the room.
“Can't see at all,” whispered Silver.
Diamond fumbled around, stroking the wall next to the door and flipped what felt like a light switch. The room illuminated weakly in the light of a single naked bulb hanging by a cord from the ceiling. She grumbled disappointedly as she surveyed the musty old monochrome collection of books packed together on a few freestanding shelves. It looked like a special library within the bigger library but not one that was particularly interesting.
“Looks boring,” she yawned. “Unless you're Scootaloo and Button Mash.”
“You haven't even looked at anything yet," argued Silver pouncing on the stacks. There's a reason all this stuff is off limits.
Diamond sighed and wandered over near her friend. “Yeah, it's probably all just out of circulation trash marked to be burned. She ran her hoof across a row of spines as she absorbed the titles. Abyssal Magic. Sacred Flame Tribulation. The Wallflower Diaries.
“I knew it,” groaned Diamond. "It's just junk.”
“Oh really?” scoffed Silver.
Diamond turned around to see her waggling her eyebrows and holding up a book called ‘How to Commit the Perfect Murder.’ “What about this ?”
“Wow…” Diamond put a hoof to her chin. “Huh…” she thought.
Silver frowned back at her. “I just thought the title was cool; I wasn't suggesting anything. I don't want to go to the concert that badly.” She shoved the book back in the stack and continued looking. “Oh, there's a book of necromantic practices.”
“What the hell is that?”
“Like bringing ponies back from the dead.”
“Oh, necromancy? That can't be real.”
“I mean, I'm holding it in my hooves. It's real to someone at least. They put it in an off limits closet. It's unicorn magic based of course so it wouldn't make much sense to us.”
Diamond came across a crude, unlabeled spine that just called out to her. She yanked it out and was surprised to find it floppy. It wasn't really a book but a ream of papers bound together with metal fasteners and marked classified . The cover page read Project Mockingbird .
“What the,” she muttered to herself, her interest mildly piqued.
She brought it over to a nearby cluttered table to set it down. Then she began to flip through a series of typed documents, images of brain scans and dossiers on convicted criminals.
“What is that?” asked Silver Spoon peeking over her shoulder.
“I don't know but it looks crazy.” Diamond kept turning the pages through a collection of lab reports.
Silver stopped her by planting a hoof on a photo of what looked like a skin rash and then read part of the account aloud.
“Subject followed full battery of orders including inflicting first degree burns on his left foreleg. Subject did not appear to sense pain during the test until brought out of the receptive state.”
She allowed Diamond to advance to the next page and continued reading. “Subject fully rejected both survival instincts and deeply held values including safety of loved ones in order to carry out given commands.”
Diamond scratched her head. “This is reports from the government using prisoners as guinea pigs for…”
Suddenly Silver slapped the book shut to look at the cover, the name, the date, the royal insignia. “Woah, you know what this is?” she gasped.
“Proof that Celestia is more fucked up than I am?”
“Debatable. No, it's some kind of old cold war era secret mind control experiment probably for like… making hypno assassins or something.”
“No way. How does it work?”
“I don't know. Magic or drugs. It's probably in there somewhere. I wonder how this got here.”
Diamond opened the book again and kept flipping arbitrarily through the pages until something literally jumped out at her. It skittered out of the fold, a tiny paper envelope that had been tucked away loosely in the pages almost like a lost bookmark. It looked like a seed packet. On it was written in permanent marker ‘Blue Wraith.’
“Blue Wraith?”
“You think this is the mind control drug?” asked Diamond, undoing the little brad on the envelope.
“Don't touch it,” warned Silver abruptly. “Let's get out of here.”
Diamond sighed and scooted the envelope back into the crease of the book before closing it. She conceded that perhaps now was not the time but she absolutely needed to know more about whatever this was.
“I think I've found the book I want to check out.” laughed Diamond, tucking the documents into her foreleg.
“I don't think they're going to let you check that out,” said Silver warily.
“Clearly it was a figure of speech, Silver,” she scoffed, making for the door.
“With you I never really know.”
It took a little bit of distraction and sneaking but Diamond was able to smuggle the classified documents into her saddlebag by the door before everyone made their selections and it was time to go.
Back at school she fantasized about what secrets might be inside that book all the way up until the final bell. What if it contained a solution for exacting revenge on her mother? She'd never been so motivated to read anything in her life. She could hardly keep from pulling it out before she was back home alone in her room with the door closed.
Sitting at her vanity Diamond pored over pages of morbid imagery coupled with detached and cynical accounts of more than a few disturbing tests.
One told of a prisoner who collapsed with severe dehydration after being programmed not to drink and obeyed even though he was presented with unlimited and easily accessible water. Another did not sleep for three days and stood the whole while. The substance's ability to override a pony's basic hardwired instincts seemed almost borderline superpower in nature.
Diamond grimaced in disgust when she finally got to the answer she'd been searching for. Blue Wraith wasn't a drug, it was a genetically modified brain parasite. The envelope contained a sample of dehydrated worm eggs that could stay alive for decades in near stasis. They activated in liquid and were to be ingested by the intended host that way.
She read the next passage of the official document aloud. “After exposure to Blue Wraith the parasites can propagate within the host's brain rendering them completely receptive to commands indefinitely.” Her eyebrows went up with intrigue. “Wow… maybe science and history are actually interesting.”
“Subject was assigned the activation phrase ‘tumbleweed soup,’” she muttered, after flipping back into the live testing accounts.
Every test subject got a different ‘activation phrase’ as it was called. A subconsciously programmed phrase that would put a host pony in the receptive stage or bring them back out again. The phrase was always something weird that would likely never be said in a natural conversation.
Diamond picked up the little envelope and gave it a shake in her hooves. She could hear the little eggs rattling around inside. Dozens of specks a size between a grain of sand and the head of a pin.
Could such a thing really work, she wondered. More importantly, was there any risk in failure? Not really, she decided. After reaching a critical mass of knowledge over the parasite, what it did, and how to use it to enslave a host's mind, she began formulating a plan to use it on her mom immediately. Spoiled was always drinking something. Getting her to ingest Blue Wraith would be easy. Just don't get caught tampering with her drink. The hardest part would probably be imprinting on the parasite. It had to be done while she was asleep and between thirty minutes and twelve hours of ingestion. If she couldn't catch her in an afternoon nap she'd have to do it tonight when she was asleep in bed next to her dad and that would be a lot more troublesome.
With the packet concealed in a regular school book that was tucked in her foreleg she went downstairs to scout out what her mother was doing. She found her in the living room watching her stories on the TV. This was her second favorite place and time to sleep other than her room at bedtime so the outlook for the plan was auspicious so far. However there was no wine in her hooves or the table next to her which was definitely odd. She never watched without a drink unless… Diamond turned around and scampered to the kitchen we're Cufflink was just setting a clean, empty glass on the tile counter. He spun around and marched to the wine pantry. A burst of adrenaline shot through her. This was her shot; she needed to be fast.
Diamond set her book quietly on the counter and split it open to reveal the packet of Blue Wraith. She bent The brad prongs closed with the tip of her hoof while Cufflink hummed out of sight in the pantry as he searched for the correct label. She shot a glance in his direction to make sure he wasn't returning and then inverted the envelope between her hooves over the wine glass. A bit of tan colored particulate, not unlike sand, fell silently into the vessel, collecting in the dimple at the bottom. She crinkled the envelope once just to make sure it was empty and then scurried away to her book. She tossed the envelope inside, closed it and gathered it up just as Cufflink emerged from the pantry with an unopened wine bottle cradled in one hoof.
Diamond walked casually out the door but lingered on the other side just long enough to witness him uncork the bottle and pour a bit into the glass. The filly turned away and pumped her hoof in triumph. She’d cleared the first hurdle. She loitered around in the entryway until she saw Cufflink come out with a platter en route to her mother. He came back shortly empty-hooved and only then did she venture to the living room to investigate. He’d left both the glass and the bottle and Spoiled was already drinking. Now she just needed to wait and see if she fell asleep at some point in the near future.
Over the next twenty-five minutes Diamond continued to peak around the corner to check on her and as a result effectively watched her mom's entire shitty soap opera. "Useless," she scoffed in annoyance.
Finally the program ended and the TV clicked off but her mother didn't move from her spot. Her head slumped down disappearing from over the back of the couch. This was it, she was going to take a nap.
Diamond checked the grandfather clock in the hall planning to wait for ten minutes but could only manage to wait seven before entering the room. She was within the activation window but was her mother asleep yet?
The filly wandered quietly around to the other side of the sofa and up to her mother's motionless form. If she made the wrong call here the moment would be more than a little awkward.
“Mom, are you awake?” Diamond whispered. She paused but her mother offered no response. “I accidentally knocked your favorite painting off the wall and it broke,” she added. Spoiled continued to do nothing but breathe softly, her lips parted slightly as they puffed red wine fumes into the air. Yep, she was definitely asleep.
Diamond cleared her throat to recite the root programming command verbatim. “Spoiled Rich, when you hear me say the words tumbleweed soup you will become fully compliant and obey orders only from me.” According to the reports she was essentially making a bond with the parasites through the bioelectric impulses of her mother's brain as it processed the root command.
That was it. If it was going to work it was already successful. It felt like there should be more to it though but she guessed a lot of the work was already done by the engineering of the parasite itself. The only thing left to do now was test it out. Diamond took a deep breath and then jostled her mom with one hoof to rouse her back into consciousness. She groaned in aggravation and her eyes cracked open.
“Mother, wake up; it's time for tumbleweed soup.”
Diamond swallowed as she waited for an inordinate amount of time while her mom just laid there silently staring at the ceiling like she'd just gotten stuck. Something was very strange about this… Did it work?
“Stand up,” breathed Diamond.
Without protest or question, Spoiled got to her hooves and stood up on the springy couch, something that was conspicuously out of character for her to do.
Diamond's eyes bulged. “Stand on the floor,” she said pointing down.
Her mother stepped onto the floor and stood before her. Diamond leaned in close to look her in the eye. Her pupils appeared dilated and unfocused with a vacant expression almost like she was sleeping with her eyes open.
“Spin in a circle,” she ordered.
Her mother walked in a tight circle and then another and then another and then another like a dog chasing its tail.
Diamond's mouth dropped open in disbelief. “Stop and face me,” she commanded.
Spoiled did as she was told and stood there appearing to wait for further instructions.
Diamond looked around, wary that someone might be watching what they were doing. “Follow me to my room," she ordered. Then she turned away heading for the stairs. The filly cast a glance behind as she started her ascent and saw that her mother was right in her hoof steps. She followed her onto The landing, down the hall and into her daughter's bedroom.
“Shut the door,” commanded Diamond.
Spoiled shut the door behind her and then waited there as if she didn't have a thought in her head unless someone put it there.
“Tumbleweed soup,” said Diamond. She watched as the presence returned to her mother's eyes and she adopted a confused expression as she looked around the room.
“How did I get here?" she asked.
“What do you mean? You walked,” answered Diamond disingenuously.
“I mean, I don't remember…” her words trailed off
She really didn't remember anything that had transpired while in the receptive state, just like the notes said. From her perspective it was as if she had teleported straight from laying on the couch in the living room to standing in her daughter's bedroom.
“Tumbleweed soup,” said Diamond.
Spoiled’s eyes became glassy again as her consciousness took a nap. This was big. If her mother had no memory of the things she was doing, Diamond had no consequences for any of it.
Diamond pointed at the nearest bedroom window. “Gallop away and jump through my window.”
Immediately Spoiled broke into a full speed gallop toward the pane of glass.
“Stop,” shouted Diamond before she could reach the glass. Her mother skidded to a halt and stood idle once more. She really would do anything she was told. “Lick the bedpost,” she asked casually.
Her mother approached the closest wooden bedpost at the foot of her bed and without hesitation extended her tongue and began to lap at it in an upward stroke.

I'm going to take you to your husband and when we get there you are going to tell him that I spoke with Diamond and I decided we can unground her today and let her go to the concert this weekend as long as she makes a genuine effort to improve her grades.” Diamond gave a lengthy pause before continuing. “Can you repeat that for me right now?”

Her voice was not robotic or monotone but simply a little listless. She no longer had a terse edge to her.
Diamond rubbed her hooves together. “Perfect. Say exactly that to him and don't forget to make eye contact with him while you're doing it and then afterwards follow me out of the room when I leave the room. Let's go.”
Diamond led her dazed mother back downstairs. They wandered around for a while, the filly poking her head in and out of rooms before finding her father seated at the bar with a drink and an open newspaper. She walked her mother over to her distracted dad and watched her mother with breathless anticipation.
Spoiled reared up on the opposite side of the bar and tilted her head to look him invasively in the eye before launching straight into her lines without introduction. Diamond facehooved. In her attempt to make her act normal during the conversation she'd made her act weird.
“I spoke with Diamond and I decided we can unground her today and let her go to the concert this weekend as long as she makes a genuine effort to improve her grades.”
“Oh, okay,” nodded Filthy. “Nice to have a rare moment of diplomacy. Well, what are we thinking for a target grade?”
Spoiled produced an awkward silence as she had reached the end of her programmed spiel and she couldn't add lib, at least not unless she was ordered to perhaps.
“She said all Bs would be a good target," offered Diamond.
“Sounds fully attainable,” he smiled. Then he looked curiously back at his wife who was still standing there like a soldier at attention.
“Great,” blurted Diamond, desperate to bring the exchange to an end and make her escape. She turned and walked briskly for the door. She looked behind and breathed the sigh of relief when she saw her mother close behind.
“Enjoy the concert then,” added Filthy before taking a swig of whiskey.
It really worked. She wasn't grounded anymore and she was going to the concert and she could do so much more than that that it boggled her mind to think about. She led her mom back to the living room, giddiness bubbling inside her.
“Lay down on the couch and pretend to be sleeping.”
Spoiled got on the couch and assumed the position she had been in before being awakened by her daughter. Then she shut her eyes and waited. With any luck she'd open her eyes after this thinking she was awakening from a nap which would explain the missing tract of time. Also, anything weird that she saw, such as a blink of being in her daughter's room and having a short conversation, could be explained away as a dream. Miss Cheerilee was right , she thought. I am smart. I should have been on the Project Mockingbird team.
“Tumbleweed soup.” she called over the back of the couch before ducking down and creeping silently out of the room.
“It worked,” was the first thing that Diamond said to Silver the next morning when she burst out of the gate of her estate.
“What do you mean?” she blinked back at her.
“The mind control thing,” she whispered. “It worked and the concert is back on.”
She wanted to accuse her of kidding but her reaction just seemed too genuine.
“Yes!”
They smacked hooves in celebration.
“What happened? How did it work?” asked Silver as they began to trot down the sidewalk.
“I'll show you exactly how it works after school but the short of it is I can make my mom do whatever I want now. I can flip between normal consciousness and mind control like a light switch and she doesn't remember anything she did during that time.”
“That's amazing.”
“Yeah but what's also amazing is that the book was actually interesting to me on its own even without the added bonus of enslaving my mom. But I now essentially have the powers of an adult with a ton of money combined with the impunity of a minor. I learned that word from the book. Oh and do you know what Blue Wraith actually is?”
“What?”
“It's genetically modified brainworms.”
Silver's lips curled in disgust. “Eew.”
“Yeah, that little packet was full of unactivated parasite eggs that had just been sitting there in that report for like forty years,” she laughed. - - -
“Which one of these do you think matches my eye color best?” asked Sweetie Belle.
She floated a pair of green barrettes up next to her eye and waited for approval. Rumble, who was turned around backward in Scootaloo's desk seat, looked back and forth between the subtly different colors.
“Uh… the little one I think.”
“Yeah, that's what I thought,” agreed Sweetie.
Scootaloo was standing over at Button Mash’s desk while the whole room seemed to converse except for Twist who read quietly and Diamond who just zoned out the window until the teacher finally brought class to session.

At lunch she wanted to talk all about it with Silver but she didn't want to risk being overheard by anyone so she just pestered those around her as she usually did when idle.
“You're still eating that crap? scoffed Diamond from across the table.
“I like it,” shrugged Pip Squeak before taking an unapologetic bite of his horseradish sandwich.
“It stinks.”
“Leave him alone,” growled Scootaloo who turned around specifically to glare at her from the other table.
“Literally no one was talking to you,” snapped Diamond.
“Literally no one is friends with you,” retorted Sweetie Belle.
Their friend group gave a hearty laugh except for Rumble who just sighed and unwrapped a granola bar with his teeth.
Diamond fumed with embarrassment and long-standing contempt for the fillies.
“Literally untrue,” said Silver Spoon nudging her in the side with a dorky overwrought grin.
Hooves thundered across the field as the blue team made another attack on the goal. Diamond and Applebloom blocked Featherweight’s advance. He passed it to Sweetie who feigned a charge before kicking it back out high to Scootaloo who headbutted it at the goal.
Snail, the red goalkeeper, lunged for the save but the ball tipped off of his outstretched hooves and plunged into the net.
“Damn it,” he grumbled as he got back on his hooves.
“Woo!”
Sweetie and Scootaloo smacked hooves.
It was tied at four now. Snail got the ball and kicked it to Hondo who brought it to the center. Rumble waited for the whistle before kicking off to Diamond. She bolted ahead desperate to make a clutch goal before the clock ran out. She dribbled far downfield into blue territory. Suddenly Scootaloo blindsided her. Skidding in, she knocked the ball from her control, her hoof clipping Diamond’s foreleg in the process. Diamond went tumbling forward on her face in the turf while Scootaloo broke away downfield with the ball.
“Are you okay?" asked Twist who lingered behind as a blue center-back.
Diamond staggered to her hooves with a groan. “Ugh, yeah… Where the hell was the whistle?” She shook the pain out of her leg and glared down to the opposite end of the field where the action was. With clenched teeth she broke into a gallop making a beeline for the ball, changing trajectory as it passed around the outskirts of the goal. She entered a slide just as it stopped in front of Scootaloo and the pegasus wound up for a shot. Diamond's forehooves connected with the ball but also Scootaloo's single planted hoof.
Diamond scrambled clumsily out of the tackle to reacquire the ball just as Hondo's whistle sounded.
“That's a yellow card,” warned the gym teacher.
“What?” Diamond protested. “She just did the exact same thing to me!”
Scootaloo picked herself up and brushed herself off before shooting her a snide grin. She went down but not as hard as Diamond had.
Diamond groaned as Hondo set them up for a penalty kick, Scootaloo versus Snail. Scootaloo blasted the ball into the top right corner out of his reach and her team cheered in celebration as they took the lead.
Hondo blew the whistle. “That's it. Good game. Head inside.”
“Fuck,” whispered Diamond as she stripped off her jersey and tossed it in the bin. She walked off the field alone with her head hung low.
“Thanks, Diamond,” mocked Sweetie from behind her. “You were the best player on our team.”
“Maybe you'd be better at sports if you could pay someone to do it for you like everything else,” cackled Scootaloo.
Diamond looked back at her over her withers as smug of an expression as she could manage. “I might not be best at sports but at least I can still fly as well as you can.”
Scootaloo’s laughter came to an abrupt end as her face contorted with rage and she lunged at Diamond. - - -
Diamond pranced across the polished wooden threshold of her mansion,
“Welcome back Miss Tiara and welcome Miss Silver Spoon,” greeted Cufflink before shutting the door.
“Hello,” replied Silver.
“Cufflink do you know where my mother is right now? " asked Diamond, passing him her saddlebag.
“Yes she is presently gardening in the back," he replied, taking Silver's bag as well.
Diamond gave a knowing nod to her friend and the two fillies cantered through the house straight to the rear double doors and out onto the veranda.
“There she is,” pointed Diamond excitedly. “Come on. Follow me and stay quiet.”
The two crossed the lawn and slunk up behind Spoiled who was turned away and pushing dirt into a hole with her forehoof. At three body lengths away she stopped and recited the words. “Tumbleweed soup.”
Immediately her mother abandoned the task she was working on and stood up straight before turning in and turning around to face them. She said nothing, her eyes were empty and her expression was impassive.
Though she hadn't even done anything yet, everything about her seemed strange somehow to Silver.
Diamond turned to Silver. “It's in effect now but we need to go somewhere safe first before trying anything. Come to my room, mom.”
All three ponies turned toward the house and headed for the veranda. Diamond could hardly wait as she tromped up the stairs but soon enough they were together in Diamond's room with the door closed.
“Okay, check this out,” she began. “Roll on your back.”
Spoiled promptly dropped to the floor and began to roll on her back like a playful foal.
Silver's mouth dropped open.
“Stop,” commanded Diamond. “Go eat the piece of paper lying on my vanity.”
Her mother turned to the vanity, trotted over and bent her head down. She took the piece of paper in her mouth and began to chew it. Slowly it crumpled together as she sucked it into her jaws.
“This is nuts,” muttered Silver, shaking her head.
It took nearly a minute but finally it was masticated enough for her to swallow completely. Then she turned around to face them in the same expectant gesture as always.
“Her eyes look off," remarked Silver absently. “Kind of creepy.
“Flag your tail at us,” continued Diamond.
Spoiled spun back around and lifted her tail to the side, revealing her plot to the both of them.
Silver raised a hoof while averting her eyes. “Oh come on, really?” she groaned. “Okay, I get it.”
“Lick Silver's pussy until she cums,” commanded Diamond casually.
“What?” blurted Silver Spoon in alarm.
Spoiled approached the filly briskly and began trying to walk around behind her. Silver quickly maneuvered her hindquarters away from Diamond's mom but she continued her pursuit.
“N-now hold on; I don't want that, at least not from a girl.”
Diamond giggled and then winced clutching the rib that twinged from her tussle with Scootaloo. “Just close your eyes and give it a try," she suggested as she watched her friend scamper away from her persistent mother. “I'm sure it'll feel just the same. I can leave if you want.”
Silver vaulted desperately over the bed with spoiled zeroing in on her rump from behind, her tongue already protruding with anticipation.
“Diamond, seriously, stop her,” she pleaded, backing her ass into the corner where she thought it was safe. “I will run out of the room screaming.” Realistically though she would have eventually succumbed, whether she liked it or not, to the tenacious relentlessness of Spoiled.
“Okay, fine, stop,” ordered Diamond, a little disappointed that she wouldn't get to watch someone else using her mom as a tool and also that her friend was still a zero on the Kinsey Scale.
“Spin in a circle, mother.”
Spoiled began chasing her tail again in the same way that had delighted her daughter the day before. Silver breathed a sigh of relief before coming out of the corner to stand with her friend and watch the strangeness unfold.
Silver's comical reaction to her spontaneous sexual offering got Diamond thinking. Surely there was someone else out there other than herself who would be very interested in her mom's tongue and probably her other end for that matter. Someone like… Rumble… a grin spread across her face. Rumble, a hormonal and sexually frustrated colt who wasn't getting any from his fillyfriend Sweetie Belle who she despised. It would take some significant planning and perhaps a bit of deception but she could get two birds with one stone.
“I think I've got a plan to get back at those Cutie Mark Crusaders,” muttered Diamond.
“What is it?”
“It's a surprise. I don't have everything figured out yet but I'm sure it'll involve my mom.” She liked surprises and hated being caught failing at anything.
Her thoughts returned to her mother’s absence from the garden. “I guess I need to put her back now. I can't mess around with her for too long too much or she's going to start thinking she's insane when she completely loses track of place and time.”
Silver watched as Spoiled continued to spin around. “Hey if she won't remember anything she's doing right now then your mom still thinks you're grounded. How does that work?”
Diamond screwed up her face in thought and nodded. “We just need to make it to the weekend without that whole issue popping back up again in discussion. If I can get out of the house and on the train then we should be good. Even if she figures out that I went to the concert and blows up about it, both my dad and I were there to witness her saying I could go. As long as she doesn't figure out that we're not all on the same page as her before we leave then I shouldn't get in trouble.”
“It's your call,” shrugged Silver. “But you know I want to go.”
“It'll work out," replied Diamond dismissively. She looked back at her mother who was still a pink blur.
“Stop and sign this incident report about when a certain shrimpy-winged skank viciously attacked me.”
She pulled the folded up piece of paper out of her mane and placed it on her work desk next to a pen.
“Are you going to tell your dad about what happened?" asked Silver.”
“Nope.”
“You might get sympathy points from him though. Scootaloo is the one who got suspended, not you.”
“Yeah but even though I beat the rap on this one, whenever I'm involved in anything negative it still goes into the pot and when the pot fills up I still have to eat it.”
She checked her mother's signature on the paper and nodded in approval. It looked perfect and it was right where it needed to be. She did need some hoofholding but she still retained some critical thinking skills and personal knowledge of herself and others.
She turned back to Silver. “I need your help with one simple test before I release her.”
“What is it?" asked Silver warily.
“Just order my mom to do something right now.”
“Lay down on the floor,” said Silver.
Spoiled didn't even twitch at the request.
“Mrs. Rich, lay down on the floor,” she tried again but she remained standing still in defiance.
“Mom,” called Diamond, “obey the orders that Silver gives you. Try again,” she coaxed her friend.
Silver adjusted her glasses. “Mrs. Rich, lay down on the floor.” Like magic the mare knelt down and folded her legs under her. Then she turned her head toward Silver Spoon as if officially recognizing her new deputized status as an order giver.
“Sit on your haunches,” she ordered.
Spoiled pushed herself up so that only her rump was the floor and she was sitting like an obedient dog. The two friends exchanged awestruck glances.
Diamond rubbed her chin with one hoof. “This makes things even more interesting…”
It was late Saturday afternoon and Diamond escaped her house without incident, only saying goodbye to her dad. She hurried to Silver Spoon's estate, expecting to make a quick getaway as her friend knew what was on the line.
“Hello Ms. Tiara,” greeted Silver's family maid. “Please come in. Silver will be down short-”
“Right here,” blurted Silver scampering to the door with a saddlebag jostling on her back.
“Have a good time at the recital, girls.” came a female voice from inside.
“We will,” chimed Silver before the door shut behind them.
“A good time at the what ?” cackled Diamond as they started down the walk.
“She thinks we're going to a college recital,” explained Silver. “What did you tell your parents you're doing?”
“I said we were going to see Villa Shade. She's having a concert there too but it's actually tomorrow. I know they're not going to look into it though.”
The two fillies gleefully climbed aboard the 4:10 train and found an open bench seat in a nearly empty car. Diamond's heart didn't relax until the initial jerk of the train as it pulled out of Ponyville Station. They were free as birds. This night was going to be incredible. As soon as the train was up to speed she opened her little pack to get ready for the show. She slipped on four black fishnet sleeves, one on each leg and then pulled out the spiked collar she was finally going to get to wear.
“Help me buckle this,” she said, holding the accessory to her neck and turning in her seat to present her withers to her friend.
“Okay,” she agreed, beginning to fiddle with the buckle. “Then you do my eyes for me.”
Silver cinched the buckle around Diamond's neck and tucked the end into the loop. Then she got out her compacts of eye makeup and slipped off her glasses letting them hang by their retainer.
“The purple glitter eyeshadow,” she directed.
Diamond picked up the little brush in her mouth and began to paint her eyelids. The applicator drifted as the train car swayed.
“Careful.”
“I am being as careful,” mumbled Diamond. “As careful as I can be in a moving train. That's why I'm doing deranged instead of glitzy."
Silver put her glasses back after her friend finished with the eyeliner. She. grinned at herself in the mirror.
“You're going to wear your glasses over my art?”
“Yep.”
Diamond sighed and then commenced with her own makeup in a much quicker fashion making black rings around her eyes and streaks of eyeliner below that looked like they were from tears. Then they painted their Hooves black. Diamond rotated her hoof in the light watching the high gloss reflection play off of the contours before blowing on it.
“You brought the remover so we can get this off on the way back, right?” she asked.
“And cotton balls. I got everything.” Silver opened up a little container of snap-on jewelry to install in the places where they weren't allowed to get piercings yet.
“What's your list of the less popular stuff you want them to do?” Diamond, snapping a skull barrette into her mane. “I want to hear Soul Stealer, Blood Pact and Dying in Flames.”
“They're definitely not doing Soul Stealer,” mumbled Silver, looking at her neat row of ear cuffs in the compact mirror. “They don't have the rights to it anymore.”
“Damn it, I forgot,” groaned Diamond.
From the train stop it was a short walk to the amphitheater venue where they got in line for security and showed their tickets below a marquee that read ‘Sleigher.’ Then they were in. They were there early enough to get priority in their section and stake out the front of the stage.
“This is perfect,” Silver celebrated looking around. “Think this will be the pit?”
“The entire standing section is going to be the pit," replied Diamond confidently.
They held their spot vigilantly as roadies in band t-shirts set up equipment and did sound tests. Concert goers trickled in and their area filled up slowly over the next fifty minutes. Concert time came and went.
“Five minutes past,” declared Diamond jittering with excitement. “Any second now.”
A cheer swelled over the crowd as the band members swarmed the darkened stage and took up their instruments.
The rolling thunder from the intro to Reigning Blood boomed over the speakers and the crowd screamed with excitement. Diamond and Silver exchanged ecstatic expressions as the black stage filled with swirling fog and strobe flashes to simulate lightning.
“Holy shit,” shouted Diamond. “I thought they would close with this!”
The ominous wail of the electric guitar gave way to the hook and when the gallop began the whole amphitheater lost control. A wall of ponies thrashed behind them and an enormous mosh pit opened up. Diamond’s mane went wild as she banged her head and bucked in a circle.
“Come on, Diamond,” screamed Silver inaudably while shoving her into the pit. The two of them pushed and jostled around ricocheting off of other ponies and getting faces full of whipping manes and tails.
“This is amazing,” screamed Diamond.
Silver slammed into the side of a burly stallion in a jean vest and her glasses went flying into the aether.
She felt her face as she staggered about. “Oh shit!” Not even her eyewear retainer had saved her. She paused momentarily to try to look for her lost glasses but was getting pushed away and couldn't even see the ground beneath the mass of writhing ponies. Quickly she decided that even if she could find them they were likely already pulverized and useless so she went back to moshing. - - -
When Diamond woke up late the next morning her ears were still ringing from The assault of the amplifiers. She smelled her own mane to see if it had absorbed any illicit substances from the concert and decided that the scent warranted an immediate shower.
After a night of animalistic revelry she descended the stairs fully regressed to her prim and socially acceptable self. Getting home late the previous night she had to check in with the staff and had yet to see either of her parents.
She could hear her father now though, grousing loudly in the kitchen but not about her.
“We don't get a bit for the project until it clears those last two hurdles with the city,” railed Filthy. “They have four dozen move-in ready houses in the Eastside that have just been sitting there unoccupied for weeks now.”
“The city council is a joke,” scoffed Spoiled twisting a corkscrew at the counter. “They should have greenlit everything months before construction even ended.”
“It's the new laws that just went into effect,” clarified Filthy.
“Hi Daddy,” chimed Diamond, rearing up to put her hooves over her father's shoulders from behind.
“Good morning, Diamond. How was the concert?”
“Great,” replied Diamond, expecting her mother to jump at any moment. “She did all my favorites.”
Right on cue, Spoiled spun around with a contemptuous glare on her face. “Concert? What concert?”
“I went to the Villa Shade concert last night with Silver Spoon,” she explained.
Her mother's eyes narrowed. “Oh, is that so? Completely disregarding your grounding? You're in big trouble now.”
Diamond shrugged innocently. “But mom, you said I wasn't grounded anymore and I could go to the concert. We made a deal that I’d try to get at least all Bs in school.”
Spoiled scoffed in disgust. “I said no such thing you little liar,” she snapped. "You're just digging your hole deeper!”
“Dad, you were there, remember?” prodded Diamond with level confidence.
“It's true, Spoiled. That's exactly what I heard. Don't you remember? We decided she could go to the concert. You came up with that on your own and proposed it to me here in the kitchen while I was reading the paper.”
Diamond had to turn away to keep her composure when she saw her mother's expression go slack.
“I- I did?” she questioned bewilderedly.
“All three of us were there,” answered Filthy.
Realizing she had no argument whether it made sense to her or not she was silent for a few moments before speaking again. “Oh yes, of course, I remember now,” she bluffed nervously. “Anyway, carry on.” She walked away with knitted brow, still trying to recall a memory she didn't possess. She was so frazzled that she abandoned her wine on the counter.
Diamond left the room to catch up with her mother in the hall, suddenly struck with an idea. She snuck up behind her and when she was sure no one else was watching spoke the words ‘Tumbleweed soup.’
Spoiled stopped in the middle of her stride and stood up straight before turning around to face her daughter with vacant eyes.
Diamond opened up the door to the nearby storage closet. “Get in the closet," she ordered.
Her mother turned promptly and marched into the walk-in storage space. Diamond closed the door behind them.
“Just stand right there in the middle of the room.”
Spoiled did as she was told while her daughter flicked off the lights casting the room into total blackness.
“Tumbleweed soup. Tumbleweed soup. said Diamond. “Stand where you are and don't move.” The filly left her alone in the closet and went to the study where she got the most hideous Zebrican mask from off of the wall and carried it back with her. She turned the closet light back on, slipped the distorted visage over her face and stood directly in front of her mother before reciting the words again.
“Tumbleweed soup. Tumbleweed soup.”
She turned the lights off one last time.
“Tumbleweed soup tumbleweed soup.”
She fumbled for the door handle and then escorted her mother back into the hall directly to the spot where she had been standing before she got highjacked.
“Stand right here,” commanded Diamond before running away.
“Tumbleweed soup.”
Spoiled gasped at the visual jump scare that had shot through her brain like a lightning bolt. She looked around in a panic before rubbing her eyes and cantering away. Diamond stifled her giggles just out of sight around the corner as she clutched the ugly mask to her. - - -
As much as Diamond would have loved to waste the rest of her Sunday screwing with her mom to the brink of insanity but she needed to be diligent in her personal side project. She dropped by Silver's house after she knew she was done with her violin lessons. Silver was wearing new glasses or rather a backup pair of black square frames to replace the lost ones.
“Are your ears still ringing?” asked Diamond, shutting the door of her room.
“Yeah, my body is sore too,” laughed Silver.
“Did your mane smell like weed when you woke up?”
“Yep.”
A sudden thought occurred to her as she approached Silver's bed: her mom could just walk into the local dispensary and buy them weed now among other things. She shook her head, trying to refocus as she dug through her pack.
“I brought a surprise with me. Check this out.” Diamond dumped out an envelope of fresh photos on Silver's bed. They plopped gracelessly in a stack.
Silver's eyes widened in shock as they fixated on an image of Rumble and Spoiled passionately making out on the edge of a crappy motel bed. She spread the pile of pictures out with one hoof and her jaw hit the floor. There were over a dozen candid photos of Diamond's mom deepthroating the enraptured colt or Rumble on top of Spoiled, buried all the way inside her marehood, toned flanks and back tensed at the apex of his thrust.
She turned to Diamond in abject horror. “You set up a trist for them and then took pictures of it?”
“Yep,” she nodded smugly.
“How could you do this?”
“Well planning it all out was the hardest part. Getting him actually in bed with her wasn't too-”
Silver gritted her teeth. “No! You know that I…”
Diamond blinked cluelessly. “Know that you what?”
“Don't hurt Rumble,” blurted Silver at a loss for words.
“Why not?” demanded Diamond.
“Just don't!”
“But my entire plan was basically going to end up doing that either directly or indirectly by wrecking Sweetie's relationship with him in a horrifically embarrassing way and it took a lot of work to get to this point.”
“Don't… do it,” protested Silver obstinately. “Do something else!” Her eyes flicked back to the lurid images and she continued to spred them out on her comforter.
“Ugh, fine.” groaned Diamond throwing up her hooves. “I hate when you get like this. Wait, are you upset that I got Rumble to fuck my mom or that you weren't in on it?”
“I don't know,” she snarled angrily. “Can I have some of these photos?”
With her plan nixed on the behest of her friend the only thing she had achieved now was getting Rumble laid. She was back to square one but at least she had a solid proof of concept for her mom's capabilities. She would figure out something but at the moment her thoughts returned to punishing her mother or at least deriving some sort of pleasure from her mistreatment and degradation whether she was conscious of it or not. Pimping her out to someone for their own sexual gratification produced its own vicarious catharsis but what she really wanted to see was Spoiled getting railed at both ends by a long line of well endowed stallions. It just didn't seem feasible though. While Diamond was crafty and brazen she didn't know how to go about arranging something like that.
Dealing with colts was one thing but prepositioning adults seemed like a good way to get busted quicker if she spoke to the wrong one. Colts were stupid and desperate and were happy to get what they got and didn't like to snitch. A stallion, while they could certainly be enticed by free or cheap pussy as well, would be more likely to spot and flag suspicious behavior especially when it involved a minor like herself.
The idea came to her at lunch that day when she was looking over the crowded tables of chattering foals. A party. A big party. One with all the off limits shit that teens wanted but couldn't get, all right there on a silver platter. She could do that but how could she do it without getting in trouble? She'd need a venue, a disguise and plausible deniability. If she could pull this off it would be epic.
The gears in Diamond's head only stopped turning when they were interrupted by silver as they were walking home at the end of school.
“Did you hear?” asked Silver excitedly. “Sweetie's gone for two days this week. Some singing tryouts in the city. I need your help. It's the perfect time to strike.”
Diamond screwed up her face in wonder. “For what?”
“For… getting a date with Rumble.”
Diamond scratched her ear incredulously. “A- a date with Rumble? You want a date with Rumble?” She had to repeat the words twice because they sounded just as ridiculous the first time. “Actually the best time to strike would be when he's not dating anyone and when his market value as a significant other has cratered which is what we could have had right now if you would have let me just do my thing.”
“No, this way is better, don't you see? Rumble will voluntarily leave Sweetie for me once I show him how much better I am. She'll be sad, we'll be happy and there won't be any collateral damage.”
Diamond's lips crinkled as she fought off a smile at her friend’s borderline delusional plot. “So do it, she shrugged supportively, even though she had serious doubts about Silver's ability to close a deal like that.
Silver rubbed her hooves together anxiously. “I can't. That's why I need your help. You're better at talking to boys and coming up with schemes. You convinced him to meet with your mom while he was dating Sweetie, you could convince him to go on a date with me while she's out of town. Just one date, one time to try me out and if he still wants Sweetie then we'll leave him alone and you can do some other plan.” Then her eyes narrowed with conviction. But he won't say no by the end.”
“It's weird to have someone negotiate a date for you.”
“But isn't that kind of what a wingmare is?” insisted silver. “If I just do it alone it won't work.”
Diamond sighed. “This isn't a dirty trick on Rumble?” She asked. “You're actually aiming to be his serious, committed, long term fillyfriend here?”
“Yes,” she replied emphatically, her eyes sparkling.
“After I showed you pictures of him cheating on Sweetie Belle with my mom?”
“Sweetie brought this on herself,” she glowered. “She doesn't even deserve him.”
“I think you're missing my… you know what, okay. I will do my best to get you one date with Rumble while Sweetie is out of the picture. One shot and we'll set up one amazing date night.”
Silver grinned ear to ear. “Thank you diamond!” - - -
Silver was right about one thing: Diamond was good at schemes. By the end of the next day when Sweetie was gone from Ponyville she had thrown together a complete plan that might even give her friend’s pie in the sky fantasy a shot at success.
In a moment that felt very much like deja vu Diamond caught Rumble alone as he was leaving the school the next day.
“Hey, Rumble, got a minute?”
Rumble turned around and eyed her nervously. “No, I'm not going to do that again,” he shook his head.
Diamond waved her off. “No no no, this is something else. Wait, you're not? Why don't you want to do it again?”
“Because it was wrong.”
She's stifled a titter. “Well aren't you sweet. Listen, forget about that. You see my friend over there?” She turned and pointed to the gray filly in glasses standing some distance away out of earshot. She blushed under his gaze and twiddled the end of her braid with one hoof.
“You mean Silver Spoon?” he groaned, obviously recognizing the filly classmate that he'd known for half his life.
“Yeah. Well it turns out that she likes you.”
“So?” he shrugged apathetically.
“So she wants to go on one date with you.”
He shot her an exasperated expression. “Are you kidding? I'm dating someone else, we're not in the same social class and she's a dork.”
“Valid points all,” she agreed. “But look at how excited she is. If you don't like the word, you don't have to call it a date. Just call it ‘doing something fun with a classmate.’ Sweetie won't know and she can't just expect you to sit around doing nothing while she's gone. It's not like it's some kind of betrayal. It's certainly not up to the level of what you've already done with my mom.”
Rumble blushed with shame.
Diamond lowered her voice. “Unless you want it to be of course because confidentially she's guaranteed to put out if that's the direction you want to go but that's between you and her. Just go with her and eat some food, watch a movie, maybe walk and talk somewhere and… whatever else but you don't have to do anything you don't want to do.”
“You mean besides the entire thing?” He scoffed.
“You eat and watch movies all the time. What difference does it make if Silver Spoon is there with you when you do it? You're just getting to know a classmate that you've more or less ignored your whole life while getting free stuff. You don't have to pay for anything.”
He had to admit that actually did sound good but with someone else.
Silver Spoon furrowed her brow as she watched their extended back and forth conversation. “Why is this taking so long?” she murmured anxiously.
“No, I can't,” concluded Rumble bluntly.
Diamond sighed frustratedly. “Okay Rumble, I didn't want to have to do this but you leave me no choice.” She surreptitiously pulled out a folded up photo, flattened it out and held it up on her hoof to him making sure to block Silver's view.
His blood ran cold as he recognized the illicit moment recorded in the image. “What the fuck?” he whispered angrily.
“I have more and they get much worse… or better depending on how you look at it.”
“You took pictures of me?" he hissed.
“No, I took pictures of my mom , you were just in them.” That sounded a little better then what she really did, she decided and maybe it salvaged the tiniest bit of good faith.
“You're blackmailing me over this?”
“If I have to.”
“You said Sweetie would never find out.”
“And she won't if you're not stupid about this.”
“If you put those photos out there your mom would be in a lot more trouble than I would be.”
“Yes you're probably right but I don't really see that as an issue. I think you might be underestimating how much I hate my mom.” It was a bluff. She wouldn't expose him now that she had promised Silver to play nice but he didn't know that.
Rumble’s mouth hung open in defeated shock.
“For once I didn't want to come in being a bitch about this so let's find a solution that works for both of us. If you say yes to one outing with Silver I'll give you all the negatives right here and now. And after your date, or whatever you want to call it, I'll give you all of the photos I have and then we won't bother you again about this.”
The force driving her aggressive hardball approach on selling a night out with her friend eluded him at the moment but it was also far too overwhelming to scrutinize.
“Okay, fine,” he agreed resentfully.
“Great,” chimed Diamond. “How's tonight at six to ten?”
“Whatever, fine,” he shrugged apathetically. “My curfew is at ten.”
“Meet in front of the movie theater. Just go and enjoy it for what it is. Be nice and don't tell her that I had to extort you into doing this; it would make her sad and I hate having to deal with sad ponies. Now smile and wave at her like you're excited to go out and do something fun with her.”
Rumble slowly turned to look at the bashful earth pony and waved and smiled compliantly. Silver's face brightened immeasurably and she waved back. - - -
The next few hours were quite the flurry of activity for Diamond and Silver whose heart was all a flutter with an almost euphoric nervousness.
Rumble didn't style his mane, put on cologne or do anything to indicate that this was a special event. Because it wasn't, unless one viewed being manipulated into doing something as special.
At the prescribed time and place the young Pegasus swooped down from the sky landing on the sidewalk in front of the Cinema 8 movie theater. Silver was already there waiting for him, smiling and fidgeting anxiously. Rumble tried to mask his disdain for the situation as he approached her.
“H- hi, uh, Rumble. Thank you for coming.”
Thank you for coming, he thought. It was difficult to separate the two of them in his brain but her demeanor was a stark contrast to Diamond’s dirty tactics when arranging the outing. While it was still a breach of etiquette to ask him out knowing that he was already dating someone, the disconnect between her and Diamond made him think that maybe she deserved the benefit of the doubt on some level. She probably just asked Diamond if she could ask him out for her not knowing that she would put him in a chokehold over it.
“Hi,” he greeted cordially with a half smile. “So what are we going to do first? A movie?” he guessed, looking up at the marquee.
“Well I thought maybe we'd go to a movie first and then do dinner,” she explained. “I got us tickets to Hardwire but we don't have to go if you don't want to. We can just go see whatever you want.” She spoke quickly and louder than usual as if terrified that he'd lose interest at any moment.
He blinked in surprise. “You got us tickets to an R-rated action flick?”
“Y- yeah?”
“Cool… I mean… yeah, that works.” He turned toward the door.
“Want to get snacks?” asked Silver, pointing at the snack bar as they walked into the lobby.
“Sure.”
“Um… you haven't seen this one yet, have you?” asked the filly.
Rumble shook his head absently. “No, the only pony I could maybe get to take me would be my brother.”
“I haven't seen it either,” she added.
“I think your family would be even less likely to take you than mine,” he mused.
“They would be,” she agreed.
“How did you get tickets then?” he prodded suspiciously.
She pushed up her glasses. “I have connections.”
They got popcorn and soda at the snack bar. Rumble felt weird about letting her pay for everything. Was it wrong in that it felt like tacit approval of the situation to accept her offerings and not pay for himself or should he view it as a sort of compensation for the unorthodox arrangement? The ticket taker side-eyed them dubiously before tearing their tickets and directing them to the theater. They looked a little too young but they had the tickets.
The two found seats in the middle, two thirds of the way back and sat down. Silver immediately noticed their close proximity to one another, the closest they had ever been in her memory. They were sharing a foreleg rest.
The movie was a revenge story about two friends in a big city crime syndicate. One betrayed the other in order to climb the ranks and left him for dead in a burning building. The betrayed friend survived narrowly but with serious injuries. He recovered slowly and years later, after leaving the game and settling down, had an encounter with his old syndicate, now controlled by his ex friend, which rekindled not just a lust for vengeance but a desire to free his city from the dark forces he once stoked.
Using a hooful of old contacts and allies he proceeded to disassemble the entire syndicate as a one pony army employing sabotage, guerrilla warfare and at times combat against seemingly insurmountable numbers. The gore was visceral, leaving the two foals with wide eyes and slack jaws at times.
After piles of bodies the two old friends finally faced off. The reformed pony edged out a victory but succumbed to his injuries in the end.
Rumble looked at Silver to find her wiping away a tear. He couldn't believe it, she was actually crying at an action movie. Though it was objectively very sad, he admitted. He was pulled back to the movie as the animated end credit sequence began and Erasure by Scream in the Dark blared through the theater. The driving electric guitar triggered something inside him and he had to sing the lyrics albeit mumbled under his breath.
“I can't face the sun again with an emptiness inside. There's a certain kind of fantasy in the places that you hide.”
As he continued into the chorus he heard Silver's voice over his own. He turned curiously in his seat to see her singing too as she watched the credits.
“How do you know this song?” he asked.
She turned to him as if startled to be pulled out of her mind. “Oh, Scream in the Dark is one of my favorite bands.”
He gasped in disbelief. “No way. Mine too. It's impossible to not sing this song.”
“Yeah,” she smiled.
They kept watching and singing even louder until the white on black credits began to roll and then they stood up and stretched.
“That was a good movie,” concluded Rumble as they headed out the lobby door into the night.
“Yeah, I'm glad we went to see that one,” she agreed. “Even though it was sad at the end.”
“Why is it called Hardwire though?” pondered Rumble.
“Maybe it has to do with the way the syndicate trained him when he was young and how it changed his nature or the way he thinks.”
“Yeah,” he nodded thoughtfully. Or maybe it has to do with how he couldn't really escape his old life forever. Once he was in he was stuck with it to the end.”
One other thought continued to bother him. It was so weird that she knew that band and that entire song. They weren't even on the radio.
He turned to look at her. “Do you like metal music or something?” he asked abruptly.
“Yes,” she replied emphatically.
“No way! You?”
“Yeah, well my parents don't really know because they wouldn't like it but I listen to underground stuff at the record store. Also I even managed to go to a Sleigher concert last weekend.”
His eyes widened. “You saw Sleigher?”
“Yeah, they were amazing! We were right up against the stage. I lost my glasses in the pit,” she laughed.
“That's awesome. I can't believe you like that stuff. I wish I could have gone to that.”
“Maybe someday you could go with us,” she suggested.
It was a somewhat brazen invitation. He knew Sweetie wouldn't care to come but she'd also be jealous if he went with someone else, especially girls. That was a huge facet of his interests that he couldn't even share with his fillyfriend.
“Where are we going now?” he asked, looking up at the streetlights hovering overhead.
“Oh, sorry, I just started walking. I got us a reservation at Berrybrook for dinner. Is that okay? Don't worry, it's not fancy. If you'd rather go somewhere else though, we can.”
He scratched his head. “Uh, no, that's fine.” He'd never been there before. He knew of it and where it was but it was basically invisible to him. His family never went there and as a colt with limited money he only went to fast food restaurants with friends.
When they got there he was relieved to find that it was a midrange vineyard themed boutique restaurant that had novel appeal without the inflated price tag and off-putting strangeness of upper class cuisine.
The two of them shared a secluded candlelit booth which was very romantic whether Rumble noticed it or not.
“So did anyone open for them at the concert? He asked opening his menu. “Did they play like a two hour set?”
“It was just them for two hours. They did mostly old stuff and they did about half of their Retribution album.”
“That's their best one. I can listen to that entire album from beginning to end a hundred million times and feel a rush every single time.”
“Exactly.” She almost pounded the table. “I try to tell Diamond that that album is like flawless poetry but she still likes Burnt Offering better. It just hits us different I guess.”
“Did they do Brittle Bones?”
“Yeah, they actually closed with it which really surprised me.”
“Really? I thought that was kind of an obscure one. You know I never would have guessed in a million years you liked metal. You just don't seem like the type.”
“Well, I don't exactly get to be myself very often so I can see why it would be hard to imagine. I like metal but also I like violin and romance novels.”
Rumble nodded. That matched up with his assumptions about her but what didn't was how easy she was to talk to now that her jitters were gone. He found himself forgetting just how weird this whole thing was. It was exciting to finally meet someone with similar taste in music who was just as passionate about it as him.
“So your team is in the playoffs aren't they?” she asked. “That's exciting.”
“Yeah. You like sports?”
“Not usually but I will show up at your home game when it happens.”
All the way through dinner there was nary a pause in their conversation, even when the food came. Previously in school they had hardly spoken to each other at all and were near strangers but tonight it felt like they had been good friends forever. Silver seemed genuinely interested in hearing about everything he liked even if she wouldn't otherwise care.
They left the restaurant and walked through downtown under streetlights and past illuminated window displays.
“Are you going to try to get into the Wonderbolts like your brother?”
“I don't know… Maybe. I'm still searching for a direction.”
“They have a junior program, don't they? You should at least try it out.”
“You sound like Thunderlane… but I guess I should.”
“Try everything . That's my philosophy. Everyone has a cutie mark but what if you were really good at painting or something and you never picked up a brush. You'd never even know. Wouldn't that be tragic?”
“I guess it would,” he smiled.
Rumble looked at the pale glowing face on the clocktower. “We still have an hour left. Did you have something else planned?”
Silver laughed nervously wondering if she should reveal the rest of the itinerary as planned or perhaps make up something else. Suddenly her date night seemed a little overly ambitious and she was getting cold hooves.
She looked away. “Well, um, I did have a… key for a hotel room.”
Rumble raised an eyebrow “For?”
“For… whatever,” she shrugged. “There's chocolate there. We can just eat chocolate, like for dessert.” she suggested with an uncomfortable grin. - - -
Rumble opened the little black and purple box to reveal an array of very enticing artisanal chocolates. He picked one at random and tossed it in his mouth, a salted caramel.
“These aren't from Sugar Cube Corner, they're too fancy.”
“You're right they're actually shipped in from a place in Manehattan but there's a retailer who sells them here in town. They're fancier than most chocolates but they're not fresh so it's sort of a compromise.”
“Still really good though,” he concluded, laying down on the bed. Silver laid down on the bed too with the open box of chocolates between them.
“Okay, that one was kind of weird, she admitted after testing a second one. “I never liked the fruit ones.”
“Me either,” he laughed.
Their eyes met as they continued to chew their samples. She couldn't believe they were really both here in a room together even if they were just eating chocolate. Only now did she realize how oversized her plan was. Her desire to strike when the iron was hot had taken the form of hubris. Things seemed unlikely to end the way she had fantasized at least for this night but maybe it wasn't a failure. It still felt incredible and she didn't want it to stop.
Rumble felt a trembling in his chest as he looked at her. Despite the entire sorted setup the last few hours had felt energizing and natural. It was the type of experience rarely shared between two ponies who were essentially just meeting for the first time. His thoughts circled back to the terms of the negotiation. Just one date, like a trial period. She must have expected a verdict for her performance on what he assumed was her first date ever. She chose him specifically. It wasn't just one date she wanted. What could he say to her though?
Much to his chagrin, this strange little arrangement forced him to realize something. What he really wanted was a relationship that felt like this and he wouldn't get it from who he was with.
“I wish I could have discovered you in a normal way,” he murmured. With his head on a pillow he grabbed another chocolate and held it idly on his hoof just staring at it. “Can I tell you a secret? I like romance novels too.”
“No you don't,” she laughed.
His eyes snapped back to hers with a quiet sincerity. “Yeah I do, really. I don't really get to read them much though. I don't collect them. I only ever have one or two at a time that I pick up from little free libraries and I keep them hidden at all times because I don't want anyone to find out.”
“You can borrow them from me,” she suggested. I have a huge collection. I won't tell anyone.” She gasped suddenly. “You know what this means? We're like the only two ponies in the world that enjoy both metal music and romance novels.”
He laughed. “You're probably right.” A rare silence passed between them before he spoke again.
“Can you tell me a secret now? What did you really have planned for the last hour of our date?”
Silver's face began to heat up in embarrassment. “Well it's not like I could really plan it necessarily. It's more like a just in case.” Her thoughts wandered to the bedside table behind her and the birth control potion planted inside it. “I don't want to say it was presumptuous but maybe it was a little.”
Rumble smiled weakly. “If things were just a little different I'd say yes. But you know I'm supposed to be with someone else.”
Silver resisted the urge to make a case against Sweetie Belle to avoid coming off as bitter and scornful. One thing didn’t make sense to her though.
“But you crossed that line before, didn't you?” she argued.
His expression darkened. “Oh, so you know about that too… Of course you do,” he sighed.
“I told her not to bother you anymore after I found out about that whole thing.”
“That was a mistake that I keep regretting for new reasons the more I think about it. I'm not going to do something like that again. Maybe that's stupid because it doesn't fix anything. I can't even apologize for what I did but I can at least decide to be different from now on and start doing the right thing.”
“I’d date you if you weren't dating anyone,” she said. “Especially after tonight.”
The fact that they were here together at all kind of said that without her needing to. Still her words gave him pause as they forced him to imagine them together, really together. Could that actually work? Yesterday he would have dismissed such an idea as nothing but a bizarre intrusive thought but after tonight it was like he was looking at a completely different pony now, one that resonated with him and cared about the things he cared about, something unimaginable just a short time ago. It was something he hadn't really felt until now.
“I hope it was as fun for you.”
“I had fun too,” he replied. “I'm happy to have met you, like really met you. I want to keep talking to you and doing stuff with you but I… I'm in a relationship at the moment so it makes things complicated.”
He didn't want to compare her to his fillyfriend either in words or thoughts but he couldn't help it. He wanted to tell her he had fun and that he wanted to do it again but he didn't want to say anything that he would regret.
“I have to get home now,” he said softly.
“Me too,” nodded Silver.
“Thanks.” was the only word he would give her but it meant worlds. It meant that he didn't hold it against her and that he didn't regret coming and that he enjoyed her company.
“Thanks,” she repeated.
Rumble held out his hoof to her over the mostly empty chocolate box. “High hoof.”
She smiled and bumped his hoof with hers.
“See you at school," he grunted, getting up. Without another word he cantered to the door and disappeared.
Overcome with emotional exhilaration, Silver closed her eyes and hugged a pillow tightly to her chest. It felt like she was floating away. How in the hell could she just leave him alone now?
“So did you fuck him?” asked Diamond bluntly when she met her friend on the sidewalk the next morning. “What was it like?”
“No, I didn't.” answered Silver in embarrassment.
“Did you make out?”
“No”
Diamond sighed in frustration. “Then what the hell was the point of getting a hotel room? You know it's risky trotting my mom out in public to go rent a room and then you don't even use it.”
“We used the room though… just not for that. He didn't want to cheat on Sweetie again.” A dreamy smile spread across her face. “And the date was so wonderful I didn't want to wreck the mood by going too fast and getting rejected.”
“So is he dumping Sweetie Belle for you?” droned Diamond skeptically.
“Well I don't know exactly ,” muttered Silver dismissively. “That's not usually something you just confirm outright and I thought it impolite to ask him but he said he had a lot of fun and he wanted to continue doing stuff with me.”
Diamond raised an eyebrow in intrigue. That was absolutely stunning if it was true but more likely it was just a pretty little lie he told her that would fizzle out soon enough.
“Everything with him felt so natural,” she continued to gush. “We just seemed to click.”
“I went all in on your plan,” groaned Diamond. “Now I want to see carnage. Where's the carnage?”
“Maybe he didn't explicitly say that he was going to dump her now but I think it's in his head now that I'm a much better fit for him than Sweetie Belle. And he knows that I'm already circling him like a vulture waiting for a single status. Just give it a little time.” She assured her “I wouldn't chalk this up to a loss just yet.”
At school Miss Cheerilee passed back their science tests placing them one by one upside down on the student's desks.
“Great job, Diamond," she whispered to her as she left the test in front of the filly.
Diamond curiously flipped over the paper to see a B+ scrawled at the top. Her eyebrows shot up, modestly impressed with herself.
She had been distracted considerably by her new hobby for over a week now but also she had found herself more motivated in general and even interested in science. Maybe Cheerilee was right, applying herself was the missing piece of her scholastic puzzle. She didn't have any disabilities…
The surprises continued at lunch when Rumble moved from his usual spot. With Sweetie Belle still gone until tomorrow he decided to sit across from her and Silver, redrawing the lines of the established mealtime seating. It was a high profile alteration to his routine that wouldn't go unnoticed by their classmates.
Silver bubbled at his presence, seeing it as an auspicious sign. They talked about movies and music. Diamond mostly watched the two of them converse and was dumbfounded to find that Rumble genuinely seemed just as thrilled to talk to Silver as she was to talk with him. One mandatory outing together and they suddenly shared a captivating magnetism not seen in any couple at school. Maybe she did have a shot with him. It felt kind of good to be the one to have set it up.
Rumble and Diamond even exchanged a few amiable words despite her past treatment of him. Perhaps he was willing to forget about her domineering abrasiveness, now appreciating it as an opportunity to meet his new friend. After eating lunch with them she could not deny that they're rapport was real and even a threat to Sweetie.
At the end of the day however, Rumble flew off alone after the final Bell much to Silver's disappointment. She resigned herself to just the usual walk home with Diamond.
“Believe it or not I need to take a little break from fucking with my mom and let her have a mostly normal day for once,” began her friend. “It's fine if she thinks she's nuts, I just don't want my dad to start worrying about her and wondering why she's going into town all the time all of a sudden or drifting from her usual routine. So do you have time to help me with history homework?”
“You want help from me ? In history?”
“Yeah,” she shrugged. “It's either you or one of my parents but more likely a private tutor. Don't look at me like it's weird; we've done homework together before.”
“I know. You just seem… more serious than usual.” - - -
Despite her previous comments about needing to leave her mother alone, an opportunity arose when her father had to depart on a one day emergency business trip and she had to capitalize on his absence as soon as Silver left her house. A new shopping trip was in order.
Diamond occupied the window seat in a bookstore drinking a coffee and flipping through a magazine. Periodically she'd look up at the dispensary across the street. Things were taking longer than she thought they should and she was starting to get nervous. Finally her mother appeared in the street dressed in sunglasses and a gray trench coat. Saddlebags on her back. She stood there idly like she was waiting for a secret contact to show up.
Diamond quickly abandoned her table with open magazine and half finished coffee, jingling the bell as she exited the store.
Without making eye contact she walked past her mother. “Come this way,” she ordered as if beckoning a dog. “Follow me.”
She led her mom into a nearby alley and stopped her there so that she could check her bags. Opening the flap revealed a brand new bong, half a dozen glass pipes, several canisters containing three different strains of cannabis and one big bag of mushrooms.
“Perfect," she laughed, snapping shut the flap on her back. “This party is going to be amazing. Follow me she told her again exiting the alley. Her mother obeyed, trotting at pace behind her. Now all that she needed to do was get the stuff stashed safely at home and get the disguise off of her before anyone there could see her in it and start asking questions.
Diamond however only made it a short distance down the street before she paused in wonder in front of the extraordinarily provocative window display of a sex shop. Riding crops, chains, ponnequins decked out in studded black straps, gags and blinders. It was tantalizing and the stuff looked like it might be fun to use on someone else but the thing that really drew her eye in the display was one particular ponnequin dressed in a shiny black, skintight gimp suit for a mare. The wheels in her head began to turn. This was an outfit meant to objectify the wearer like a slave, in her mind perfect for her mother.
She examined the head curiously and then moved to the flanks. There was another intriguing aspect to the outfit; it offered near anonymity to the wearer, covering up almost everything on the mare, only holes for the mouth, the eyes and just a slit in the back between the flanks for access. It even hid the mane.
Her face lit up in glorious revelation. This was it. This was the solution to completely degrading her mother and getting away with it.
“You're going to be the belle of the ball,” she smirked. - - -
The next morning Diamond woke up with enough time and opportunity to make her mom eat her out before school. It was an amazing way to start the day with an endorphin surge and no tension in her body. Her mother had been reduced to a minor annoyance, almost a joke in her life but the embers of her disdain for the mare continued to burn just as strong.
Diamond floated out the door fresh off of her orgasm and cantered up to Silver on the sidewalk. “Guess what?” she began excitedly, pushing the gate closed behind her. “My mom just bought me a whole bunch of pot.”
“Oh, that was nice of her,” replied Silver facetiously as they began to trot along.
“Yeah and you're going to help test it out with me after school,” she rested a hoof on her friend’s withers.
“Uh… okay… Is it those edibles or-”
“No, you have to smoke it. Don't worry, I have everything.”
Just then Scootaloo shot past them on her skateboard grazing Diamond’s shoulder roughly.
“Hey!”
“One side, bitches,” she yelled over the roar of her wheels as she raced away.
“You're not supposed to skate on the sidewalk,” yelled Silver Spoon irately but likely unheard by the speed demon filly.
Diamond scowled as she watched Scootaloo pump herself faster and weave around a fire hydrant. “Pfft. You tell her, Silver,” she mumbled.
Scootaloo liked skateboarding and was good at sports but couldn't fly and was self-conscious about it as well as her looks which she compensated for by being more sexually active. She probably liked smoking weed with her loser boyfriend, Button Mash. If Diamond was going to drive a humiliating wedge between them she needed to leverage his known weaknesses: video games, novelty and mind-altering substances... and probably sex too but he wasn't nearly as starved for it as Rumble was. Somehow she'd find a way to make all of these pieces fit together.
At school Sweetie Belle was back from the city and for a while it looked like things were going to return to the way they were before Rumble and Silver's mandatory date. Rumble sat next to Sweetie at lunch. A distracted Silver watched them anxiously the whole period trying to find something to be hopeful about.
“Listen, it was a longshot plan and you did your best,” began Diamond. “It's impressive how far you got but now it's my turn. The good news is that I don't think they can last forever and I think you're still number one on his rebound list. It's really just a matter of time before you get a piece of him. How long that takes, I don't know.”
The two fillies walked the trail back from school together as they always did talking about nothing and everything.
“Hey, we should go to the record store right now," suggested Silver, her eyes widening in sudden recollection. “I just remembered the new Ghostly album is officially out; we should see if we can go listen to it.”
“Yeah,” agreed Diamond. But I want to drop off my stuff at home first and I can't spend too long there because I have piano at four.”
“Oh, what about the cannabis?” Silver reminded her.
“Oh yeah. Why don't I just bring it to your house afterwards?”
“Okay.”
“Just figure out the best place to-” Diamond’s words ended abruptly with a gasp and then she shoved her friend off of the path behind a tree.
“Hey, what are you-”
“Shhh,” she hissed, slipping behind the tree alongside her. “Look.”
She pointed around the tree trunk across the field to the edge of the tree line where they had seen Sweetie and Rumble a time or two before. There they were again. As always it was too far away to make out what they were saying but Sweetie's body language told them that she was in distress.
“Is he breaking up with her?" asked Silver breathlessly.
“Just watch.”
They were clearly having an unpleasant conversation. Sweetie flailed a hoof at him and then dropped to her haunches and began to bawl. Her crying they could hear the best out of everything.
“I don't know what they said but it kind of seems like Sweetie is single now,” smirked Diamond.
Silver's eyes widened, her hooves braced on the tree trunk. “It worked.”
Diamond sighed dreamily, focusing on the unicorn's anguished face. “That really scratches the itch. It’s nice that we got to see it too; wasn't expecting that.”
Rumble appeared to be trying to console her now.
“This is only half of it though,” began Diamond. “Now he needs to get with you .”
“Second,” agreed Silver emphatically.
“If she sees you two being happy together every day, sitting and laughing at lunch and walking home in front of her it'll drive her nuts. It's a win-win for both of us.” Then she muttered under her breath. “It'll probably drive me nuts too.”
Diamond sat on her haunches in front of the wine cask and carefully opened up her pack in the dim illumination of the few naked bulbs hanging from the stone ceiling. She retrieved the new bong and carefully set it upright on the floor. “Are you sure no one's going to catch us down here?”
“Yeah,” assured Silver. “No one ever comes here unless we're getting ready to host a party.”
Diamond clicked the lighter in her hooves to get an ember going. Then they waited for the fumes to start gathering. Diamond picked up the vessel, put her muzzle in the top until it sealed and took a deep breath of the smoke. She coughed and made a face before passing it to Silver. She in turn plugged the open hole with her muzzle and inhaled.
“What did you load in this?" she coughed, setting the bong down.
Diamond took a second hit and swallowed before answering. “I don't know; it was like Avidous or something.”
“I think that's the highest recreational concentration but it's not really my special interest. It does feel funny though,” she laughed before putting the bong to her face once again. She exhaled smoke and then sat back waiting for the THC to Crest in her system. Diamond however did not stay seated for long. First she began to fidget on the floor and rock back and forth with a frown on her face. Eventually she stood up to pace around anxiously, her hoofsteps on the cold stone floor echoing.
Silver-eyed her curiously as she appeared to try and look between every single wine cask occasionally shooting suspicious glances into the dim recesses of the cellar.
Finally she stopped and shook her head fearfully. “I don't like this, something's wrong. We need to get out of here right now.”
“What are you talking about?” Mumbled Silver with an uncharacteristically slurred voice.
Diamond flailed her forehooves. “I don't know. We're in danger! We need to leave.”
“We're not in any danger. You're having some kind of paranoid reaction. You just need to sit down and ride it out.”
“Nope. Fuck that, I'm out of here,” she turned and headed for cellar doors.
Silver got up and scampered to the door to block her exit. “Wait, you can't just go wandering around my estate acting all weird, we're going to get in trouble.”
“Listen to me, Silver,” she snarled. “You need to let me out of this fucking hole right now or I'm going to buck you in the face!”
Silver shrank back. “Well okay there's no need for violence. Okay… okay… she stalled for time as she tried to get her sluggish brain going. “Uh, okay, we're just going to go straight to my room okay?” she explained slowly like it was a pivotal multistage battle plan.
“Whatever, just let me out of here,” Diamond demanded.
“Okay, we're just going to leave all of the stuff here and then come back when we're all good. We don't want to get caught with it.” Silver flung open the right side cellar door piercing the dinginess with the afternoon sun.
Diamond shielded her eyes with her hoof. “Ugh, shit, that's really bright. Can you turn that down?”
“Uh, no Diamond, that's the sun. Just act normal and go straight to my room, remember.”
Diamond shot past her out onto the lawn and walked briskly around the corner of the house. Silver flipped the door shut and scrambled to try to keep up with her even though she was dizzy. Diamond went in through the side door which went into the kitchen. The two fillies made it to the stairs going up to the second floor and it looked like they were home free.
Silver looked down watching her hooves climb each and every step with utter amazement as she climbed them.
“I'm staring at the STAIRS,” she giggled. There are so many of them and they all do the same exact thing, you just step on them and you go higher and the more you step on, the higher you get… the HIGHER you get,” she laughed. “You can never use just one stair though they're like scissors or pants. Nobody ever heard of one pant.”
After climbing a hundred thousand stairs they made it to Silver Spoon's room and shut the door.
Diamond spent the rest of her buzz laying in Silver's bathtub with the lights on as she deemed it the safest place in her room. Silver just laid on the floor of her bedroom listening to music through headphones until her friend emerged.
“Well I'm not doing that again," she growled angrily.
“Maybe don't even try those mushrooms,” suggested Silver.
The next morning the first thing that Diamond did when she got to school was check on Sweetie Belle. The pretty unicorn with the duotone main sat alone in her desk looking despondent. Scootaloo, who sat behind her, was leaning forward and encouraging her with one hoof on her back. What a wonderful sight. It touched her heart.
Diamond looked across the room to where Silver was sitting and found that she was already looking back at her with a wide grin. They exchanged elated glances but for mostly different reasons. While Silver didn't like Sweetie she was primarily excited about having a real opening to get her hooves on Rumble. Diamond abhorred Sweetie and was cautiously optimistic about having to deal with a potential tagalong coltfriend of a friend soon, though she was leaning toward anticipating it being annoying. Rumble was at least near the top of the list of least annoying colts.
Silver was torn between giving him space and letting him come to her in his own time or just swooping right in at lunch time and slobbering all over him unapologetically.
Diamond looked back at Sweetie but instead immediately locked eyes with Scootaloo. Seeing her smirk Scootaloo stared daggers back at her but she didn't flinch.
It begged the question though: How much did the two of them know about the situation? What did Rumble say when he presumably broke up with Sweetie? She hoped he had enough tact to not drop Silver's name in the conversation or today might get very interesting between the two factions.
She looked away and her brow furrowed suddenly. What if he came clean and told her he cheated on her? That might ruin everything. Could that be traced back to her somehow? He wouldn't say with who would he? She began to have paranoid thoughts about it all through first period.
After the bell, Diamond went to her locker in the hall to get her math book. She jerked back when the door to her locker suddenly slammed shut almost on her hoof. The book slipped from her grasp and thudded on the linoleum floor.
She turned to see a scowling Scootaloo up in her face.
“Something funny this morning, Princess Dirtbag?”
“Other than your face, lots of things.”
“What the hell is your problem?”
“Me?” scoffed Diamond.”What the hell is your problem? “You'll find any excuse you can think of to come harass me.”
“That's bullshit,” hissed Scootaloo. “We both know that your entire sad little world revolves around making other ponies hurt. You'd be lucky to be in Sweetie Belle's position one day but I highly doubt it because no one gives a shit about you and no one ever will, not even your parents.”
“At least I have parents.”
Scootaloo shoved her back with one forehoof and it was only then that Diamond became aware of the crowd that was quickly gathering around them as they broke out into chants of fight , fight, fight.
Rage boiled within Diamond. She knew she couldn't win in a fair fight against Scootaloo but she probably wouldn't be stupid enough to try anything with this many witnesses while under probation. Still if she could goad Scootaloo into attacking her again and get her carted off to some reform school thuggish miscreants it might just be worth it.
“You're not shit without daddy's money,” sneered Scootaloo. “Everyone knows that.”
Before she could retort they were interrupted by the gruff voice of a passing teacher. “Break it up. Are we going to have a problem here?”
Mr. Blazer stuck his head through the crowd with a frown.
“No, there's no problem,” shrugged Scootaloo, immediately jettisoning the hostile energy from her voice.
The bloodthirsty crowd dispersed and Scootaloo turned away in a huff. Diamond stood there seething alone before finally picking up her fallen math book and violently jamming her combo lock shut.
At lunch Rumble sat by himself looking rather forlorn. It took everything in Silver to resist the urge to go sit by him and say hi.
“I heard from Applebloom that he officially broke up with her,” whispered Silver to her mentally aloof friend.
Diamond sat at the table hardly eating her food at all. She was still fuming at Scootaloo. She watched the Cutie Mark Crusaders, a somber Sweetie flanked on either side by her two best friends. What a buzz kill. She wouldn't be able to enjoy this victory until she finally put Scootaloo in her place.
Diamond and Silver walked home together after school, their brains occupying entirely different spaces, love and ruthless revenge.
“She's humiliated me twice within a week and I'm so tired of it.”
“What are you going to do about it?” wondered Silver aloud.
“I'm on the verge of a breakthrough. I'll keep you posted… or maybe I'll just keep surprising you,” she offered mysteriously.
“If it's anything worse than your last surprise, Celestia help us all.”
“I think… it needs to be.”
The trail of foals broke up in town going their separate ways. It was about then that Diamond noticed a shadow flash across their path from something passing overhead. Her eyes flicked skyward to see the form of a young Pegasus closing fast.
“I think you have a stalker.”
Silver didn't have time to look before Rumble suddenly set down next to her almost as silent as a cat and at pace with her as if he'd always been there alongside them.
“Hey,”
“Hi, Rumble," replied Silver, trying not to burst with exuberance. “It's been a weird day,” she added “Where are you going?”
“I was going to hit the record store before going home. Where are you going?”
“Uh, nothing. nowhere,” she sputtered. “I was just going home I guess.”
Diamond rolled her eyes.
“So you're free then? Want to come with me?”
“Yes.” The fact that she had just been to the record store not twenty-four hours ago made no reprise in her brain.
“Well you two have fun,” muttered Diamond. “I myself have projects to work on. See you tomorrow.”
The three of them said their goodbyes and Rumble and Silver crossed the street together.
“What happened today?” asked Silver as if she didn't know.
“I heard Diamond and Scootaloo almost got in another fight,” he countered.
“Yeah,” she sighed. “But they're not really fights if only one pony is fighting. Scootaloo is always the aggressor Diamond just gets under her skin.”
“I'm sure you probably already heard I broke up with Sweetie Bell yesterday.”
“Yeah, I did. Why'd you do that?”
“Our relationship was really shallow and it wasn't going anywhere,” he replied bluntly. “Even so she didn't take it very well.”
“Is that… why you came to hang out with me?”
“Yeah… It's not weird to hang out with you alone now.
Are we dating now?
Rumble scratched his ear awkwardly if that offer still stands then I guess so.”
Rumble was ready to move on and excited to date Silver; he just wasn't sure if he should so soon. Just because he didn't want to be with Sweetie Belle didn't mean he didn't want to be her friend anymore. He didn't want to do anything to make her more upset than she already was but also he saw no reason, other than social etiquette, to wait.
“Want to hold hooves?” he asked.
Silver's heart fluttered as she took his hoof while they walked to the record store. - - -
“Open your mouth,” commanded Diamond.
Spoiled opened her mouth obediently, her gaze unfocused staring off into Infinity. She looked so stupid and weak now.
Diamond lifted a shriveled mushroom on her hoof and tossed it in her mother's mouth.
“Swallow it.”
Spoiled swallowed the hallucinogenic mushroom in one gulp and continued staring vacantly through her.
“Stand facing the flowerbed.”
It was the last place she'd been standing before Diamond had interrupted her gardening for the experiment. The filly walked some distance away before deactivating her receptive phase with the magic words. Then she went to the veranda and watched from hiding.
As it turned out, giving her mom shrooms was only entertaining for a few minutes. The mare wandered around aimlessly for a while seemingly watching and tracking things flying by in the air that weren't there. She stood motionless, staring into a single flower and mumbling to herself. But soon enough Spoiled laid down on the lawn and got comfortable in a sort of zoned out or overstimulated stupor. Diamond continued spying for a while but after she didn't move from the spot she got bored and left not caring if she had a run-in with the staff while high or that without having the established context of taking a psychedelic her mother probably wouldn't be able tell the difference between her drug fantasy and reality when she came off her trip.

On Friday morning Diamond woke up early and deviated from her typical schedule to run a social errand at their rival school. After years of walking to school with Diamond, Silver knew to just leave if she didn’t show at her gate.
“Hey, where were you?” she asked when her friend entered the classroom. “I thought you were sick or something.”
“Project related,” Diamond replied simply. “I think it’s coming together nicely,” she added with a smirk before continuing to her seat just as the bell rang.
Silver scratched her chin in wonder. Whatever she was planning was big. When was she going to tell her about it? Did she even want to know?
“Hey, guys, what's going on?” she greeted, oddly amicably as she set her lunchbox on their table.
The two looked at each other quizzically, mystified that Diamond Tiara was talking to them.
“Nothing, shrugged Snails warily. “What are you doing over here?”
“Well Silver Spoon is busy fawning over her new coltfriend and I have this thing that I'm supposed to do but I don't know how I'm going to get it done now, you see…”
She paused to look around and make sure no one was eavesdropping. Her eyes landed on an aghast Sweetie Belle who was watching her ex and one of her worst enemies sitting and talking together over food. Focus, Diamond, she told herself.
“Can you keep a secret?” she asked.
Snips set down his floating sandwich. The two nodded and leaned in closer, adequately intrigued.
“You can't tell anyone. You didn't hear any of this from me either. You know Shooting Star who goes to Cloverfield, she's like the most popular pony there?”
“Yeah,” they both nodded tentatively.
“She's throwing this amazing party this Friday night and she told me to get the word out at our school but the thing is that not everyone is allowed to come. See this party is going to be absolutely legendary.” She lowered her voice. “It's going to have weed, shrooms, booze, video games and…” She looked around them before lowering her voice to almost a whisper. “There's going to be some mare that's just hanging out in a room. You go in there and have fun with her. She'll do whatever you want her to do to you, no questions asked, absolutely free.”
Their eyes popped at the sumptuous picture she painted.
“That can't be true,” said Snips.
“Like rutting,” asked Snails
“Yes, like rutting,” she confirmed. "Unless you want her to play checkers with you ‘cuz she'll do that too.”
“Who is it?” asked Snips breathlessly.
“I don't know. It's supposed to be a secret. All of this is supposed to be a secret which brings me back to my point. Only certain ponies are allowed to go. They have to be trustworthy and well informed and not a bunch of losers who will ruin the vibe.”
"You guys aren't losers right? Right.” She answered her own question without waiting for them to respond. “Does that sound like a cool party?”
“Yeah it does,” they nodded emphatically.
“You want to go?”
“Definitely,” answered Snails.
“Okay, well here's the thing, I didn't see your names on the list but if you help do the invites she'll let you in. This is too many ponies for me to track down and ask individually. If you're able to get the word out and do it right and not tip off any losers, Shooting Star will give you first whack at the party slut. That's not really a reward I'm interested in having so you two can have it.”
It sounded like a trick too fantastical to be true but if it wasn't true then why were they inviting so many other ponies too?
“I'm in,” said Snips.
“Me too,” added Snails.
“Great, that takes a load of my mind.”
Diamond passed them the folded up sheet of paper. “Don't show this list to anyone and when you're all done with it, destroy it. It has all of the foals invited to the party, what time slot they're invited for and what you can say to them to sell the party if they're skeptical about it or have other plans.”
“Why so many details?” shrugged Snails.
“She wants this party to be perfect. You don't get to be that popular with subpar stunts. Remember that you're speaking on behalf of Shooting Star here. And obviously never let any adults or other authority figures know about this party. This is a once-in-a-lifetime event for us and we don't need anyone dropping the hammer before we even get it off the ground. You pull this off it's going to be the best night of your lives. Thanks for your help, guys.”
For once she wasn't making an exaggeration or a Faustian bargain. She had every intention of giving the two of them exactly what they wanted like a dream come true. Of course they would eventually find that the real list wasn't all that exclusive, it was simply particular in its handling of a few key attendees.
"So what's your plan," Silver finally asked as she walked out with Diamond after the final bell.
"I'm planning a little party that's going feature my mom," she mumbled in her ear. "I don't think you and Rumble should come to this one. Don't worry though, to make it up to you I got you that hotel room again. Key's in my bag."
Silver just looked at her with a manic grin on her face.
Snips and Snails wandered awkwardly through the pristine looking ghost town. A whole neighborhood of brand new single story houses with no one living in them. Neither of them had seen anything like it.
“Where's the house?” asked Snails, squinting his eyes as he scanned his over the labyrinth of streets.
“It's supposed to be all the way in the back of the lot from the main entrance so we just keep walking this way,” replied Snips, pointing with conviction.
They strode alone down the arteries of the uncanny environment just as the sun was beginning to set. Somewhere in the distance they could just barely make out the sound of bass beats and then they saw it, the one and only house with glowing windows.
The two gasped as they exchanged shocked glances and broke into a canter straight for the promised wonderland of Shooting Star’s party. They could almost feel the muffled dance music in the air as they approached the stoop. Snips opened the door with his magic to reveal an empty venue.
Inside the music was pumping. The unowned house had been furnished for the party with cheap repurposed wooden crates, beanbags and inflatable chairs. The bar and kitchen counter were covered with bowls of untouched chips, dips and stacks of big pizza boxes. There were stacks of cups, big bottles of soda and kegs of ale. There was even a lineup of fancy corked bottles of liquor.
“There's no one here,” murmured Snips, scanning over the interior.
“Yeah, everyone else is supposed to come later,” Snails reminded him.
“I know but it doesn't look like even the host is here.”
“Who cares? We're here, the party is set up already and we were supposed to come early.”
Snips’ jaw dropped open as his eyes landed on the big projection on the wall in the living room. It idled on the fiery title screen of Demon Duel III. “She's got the new Demon Duel,” he gasped. He teleported into the living room and picked up the player one controller with his magic. Come on, Snails!”
“Wait, what about the mare?” reminded Snails desperately. That's the whole reason we're here early.”
Snips’ eyes widened and he set the controller back down. “You think she's here yet?”
“Let's check the other rooms,” Snails urged, already walking away with a spring in a step.
The rest of the house seemed just as deserted as the living room and the kitchen but they quickly came upon a paper taped to the wall with arrows and words upon it like a signpost. Two arrows pointed down the hall. The first was labeled bathroom , the second, Sunshine's Playground . That sounded quite promising.
The two exchanged looks with raised eyebrows.
“She's probably in there if she's here,” said Snips.
The colts bolted down the hall fighting for the front as they neared a closed door that read:

Snips knocked twice on the door and listened carefully.

It was Dinky, a little earlier than the general admission time but that was an inconsequential variable. As long as the stage set roughly the way she planned, success was within reach.
The beer, the liquor and even the soda was laced with a male aphrodisiac guaranteed to get the colts aroused and mad with lust. Her first goal was to get every one of them to visit Sunshine's Playground at least once.
Dinky disappeared inside and it wasn't but half a minute later before more foals appeared and trickled into the party. It was a promising sight to see them appearing one by one instead of in groups. Soon after the prescribed time came the floodgates opened. As twilight melted into night, Diamond kept watching until she saw the unmistakably dark form of Button Mash heading to the front door. Diamond surreptitiously left her surveillance house and entered the party acting like an ordinary surprised invitee. There were already enough foals there that it felt like a real party. A gentle haze of weed smoke crept in from the dining room. They'd also gotten into the booze and the pizzas without hesitation. Foals from both schools were mingling and chattering gregariously. Looking around the corner she saw a short line to get into Sunshine's Playground which put a smile on her face. Everyone seemed in high spirits. It looked like a nice party but the party was really just a byproduct, or rather a pretense, for her plot.
“I play winner,” declared Button Mash watching the Demon Dual III match that was already in progress.
Just as predicted… Diamond got herself two pieces of pizza on a plate and sat down nearby. A near majority of the colts present were already part of a cumulative effort to fuck her mother senseless. That would undoubtedly be more fun to watch but that little matter would take care of itself without supervision. Right here was the front lines of her revenge. Button was already drinking a cup of what she knew was spiked soda. Soon enough he'd have a lust addled brain and an aching hard on that he’d need to get rid of somehow and Scootaloo wasn't here. Diamond's goal was to make sure he ended up in Sunshine's Playground along with the rest of them.
Kettle Corn relinquished the controller to Button and left to go see about taking a hit off the bong in the smoky dining room. Everything she'd ever read about in a romance novel that sounded fun flashed through her mind in kaleidoscopic fashion. “I don't know. I couldn't even figure out what color her tail is; the weird light makes it hard to tell anything but my best guess is that it's that DJ.”
“No,” scoffed Carrot. “Sunshine has no horn. Can't be a unicorn. That much we know.”
“Oh yeah you're right, she does have a horn,” she sighed.

He was clearly so entrenched in his grievances that Diamond didn’t even bother conjuring the fake tears. An hour later Spoiled was making her final preparations to leave. She passed by the living room with her pack on and locked eyes with her daughter who was sitting in a chair as if loitering around specifically to see this. The two of them shared an awkward silence.
“Well… goodbye,” her mother blurted with a huff before continuing through the entryway and out the door, assisted by Cufflink.
Diamond waited to hear the click of the door latch and Cufflink’s departing hoofsteps before leaving her chair. She hurried into the hall and galloped out the door to catch up with her mother who was trotting somberly down the path to the gate. “Mom, wait,” she called desperately. “I have to tell you something.”
Spoiled turned around to face her.
“Tumbleweed soup.”
Her mother's eyes went blank as she became completely subservient once again.
“Don't forget to offer to suck off every stallion you meet on the train ride to grandma and grandpa's house,” she ordered casually. “You can go now.” she waved her hoof, officially dismissing her.
Spoiled turned around, walked down the rest of the walkway and disappeared out the gate. - - -
“I know things must be hard at home right now,” sighed Cheerilee but despite all that you've shown some amazing progress in your grades. I’m so impressed. I don't know what you did to turn things around but it's certainly working. Keep up the good work, Diamond.”
“Thank you, Miss Cheerilee,” said Diamond graciously.
“You know that every path is open to you,” continued her teacher. “Have you thought about going into a career in science now that you're not so adverse to the subject?”
The filly grinned. “Actually I think I want to switch from business to a psychology major now.”
Rumble and Silver were already gone and out of sight by the time Diamond exited the classroom. It had been almost a week since she had seen or talked to her mom. Initially she had missed all of the exploitative uses her mother had come to fill but just having her not in her life anymore and the peace of mind it gave her was starting to feel like the better of the two options. Maybe Spoiled wasn't just an innocuous nuisance. Maybe her mother was holding her back this whole time.
As she came to the edge of town she saw a familiar, dorky looking filly sitting alone on a bench along the walk. She was reading a book and looked to be off in her own head. Diamond side-eyed Twist as she walked by casually but then stopped and turned around to face her inquisitively.
“Hey, Twist, you've never been over to my house, have you?”
Twist winced, caught off guard by the sudden question from out of nowhere. She looked up at her. “Um. Once,” she shrugged meekly. “A long time ago for your cute-ceñera.”
Diamond rubbed her chin with one hoof. “Oh yeah, that was a long time ago. We remodeled the living room and kitchen and got a hot tub. Want to come see?”
The bespectacled filly blinked back at her curiously as she lowered her book.
Twist’s curly mane creeped around the sides of her face as she involuntarily pushed the back of her head deeper into Diamond's pillow. Her quivering lips offered shrill squeaks to the ceiling above as she lost control and presence of mind. Her vocalizations were getting louder and more copious.
Diamond looked up from her wet mound to shoot her a disgruntled look. “You need to be more quiet,” she hissed.
“S-sorry,” she whimpered. “Please keep going.”
Diamond buried her muzzle back in Twist's fillyhood, lashing her tongue across her nub once more. She tightened her grip around her squirming thighs to keep from getting crushed between them.
Twist jammed the wedge of her hoof between her own teeth and bit into it as her body plunged back into blissful delirium.
