Prolog - Las Pegasus Falls
The City of Las Pegasus lit up the night sky, with hundreds upon thousands of ponies from across Equestria gathered to partake in its many delights.
While the city was always filled with new events and fascinating tourist attractions, that night was special, in celebration of Las Pegasu's one-hundredth moon since its founding a massive firework show was set to go off in celebration upon the Moon reaching its peak in the night sky.
To avoid hurting any city-goers the fireworks had been painstakingly set up in the Gastly Gorge over the course of many weeks, multiple safety checks had been conducted, and many more safety regulations had been waved away with a few well-placed bits to make sure the festivities could commence on time without delay.
With the hour soon at hand the two who had been contracted to bring the whole ordeal together made their way to the main stage, waving as the crowd cheered for their arrival.
"Welcome esteemed guest to this once-in-a-lifetime experience," One of them practically sang out as he tipped his hat to the crowd.
"We are most excited to share with you this, our latest advancement in technology," The other said also tipping his hat.
"He's Flim,"
"And He's Flam,"
"And together we are the Flim Flam Brothers," The two took off their hats and bowed to the crowd, "And we present to you the Super Sparker six thousand,"
"But what does this, Super Spakrer Six Thouasand do dear brother?" Flim asked curiously.
"I'm so glad you asked," Flam replied merrily, "As you know most firework shows require each firework to be lit one at a time, painstakingly slow,"
"But without Super Spraker six thousand we can ignite a hundred Fireworks all at the same time!" Flim pulled out a small controller with two metallic prongs on it, "When the mayor of this fine city gives the word we will ignite the starter, and not one, but over thirty of our Super Sparker Six Thousands will begin launching the firework display!"
"And so long as all our specifications for their setup have been met,"
"Which the mayor has promised his most trustworthy aids have seen to it have been met,"
"Yes quite so brother, then so long as the Mayor hasn't lied to us, you should be treated to a marvelous show lasting upwards of twenty to thirty minutes!" As the Chrowd oed and awed, the brother's plant, raised his hoof and they pointed at him.
"Since we have a moment, what can I do for you, young sir?"
"What happens if the Mayor didn't meet your...um...specifications?" Flim and Flam looked at each other, shrugged, and then responded in perfect unison.
"The Gorge will explode," They replied simply, "And with it, untold disaster could follow suit,"
"Luckily," Flam added, "The Mayor signed all documentation and contracts, so if this does happen, we are not liable since it means the Mayor lied to our faces and ignored the recommended setup procedures,"
"We did want to check in person," Flim mentioned casually, "but he got very uppity and rather rude, and in the end, we just didn't have the time to do the final check ourselves,"
"So here's hoping everything was put together correctly," Flim and Flam lit their horns.
"Ready Flim?"
"Ready Flam,"
"Let's Big band zam!" the two shot a spell at the controller and there was a very long moment of silence, then off in the distance the sky burst to life with light as Fireworks began going off, the sounds taking a moment to hit the ears of those present, the crowd exploded in excitement as they watched the barrage of fireworks taking different shapes and sizes.
"This is degrading," Flim muttered irritably as he watched the fireworks show.
"It was this our getting our funding cut," Flam told his brother as he patted his back, "But don't worry I'm... hoping that windbag set them up correctly,"
"We won't know till the grand final," Flim replied somberly, the two brothers held each other's hoofs as they hoped beyond hope for the impossibility of nothing going wrong, the Mayor had impressed them, being a bigger con man than either of them had ever dreamed of being, they had done their fair share of shady tricks.
But the Mayor had gone above and beyond, silently raised the lease on the property their Resort lay on, and left them to unknowingly acquire thousands in debt over several months, before offering to wipe their slate clean if they did some community service in the form of using their rumored ability of great inventions to make the one-hundredth anniversary something to behold.
The results were their Super Spraker Six Thousand, barely tested and barely functional even by their own standards, the Mayor had almost certainly ignored the safety hazards the brothers had warned of during their mapping of the gorge for the best places to set up their machines.
"Worst case scenario, we cause a little bit of a landslide," Flam chuckled nervously.
"No brother, that's the best-case scenario if only one of them goes haywire, each machine is packed with enough magical fireworks and patchy magical patch jobs if more than three go up in smoke it could cause Magical interference for miles, add that that creepy forest is so close and there's no telling how bad things could get,"
"Should we split town?" Flam asked nervously.
"No, if we do that the Mayor will find blaming us for the mess even easier than it's already going to be,"
"I don't wanna go to prison Flim, it sounds cold and lonely,"
"I'll make sure we share a cell Flam,"
For ten minutes nothing seemed to be going wrong as the fireworks lit up the sky, but just as the eleventh minute was starting one of the machines had a short and tried to fire two fireworks at once, the two lit fireworks clogged up the machine and one the lit wits hit the charge the entire machine went up, with all its fireworks going flying, several hit other machines as more of them began jamming.
As the Gorge began going up in a fireball the sound of the hundreds of explosions brought with it an invisible wave that started messing with Magic, already prepared for it Flim and Flam had moved to solid ground and watched as floating clouds began losing their magic, building began sinking, and all Ponies, even the Pegasi who were naturally able to walk on clouds without the aid of spells or potions began losing their footing as all magic, unicorn, pegasi, and even earth pony in origin began failing.
Flim, Flam, and a few lucky ponies and buildings landed on the few flattened bits of the mountain the city had originally been built on, but most buildings and ponies began plummeting to the ground.
most Pegasi began doing their best to help others, some fell victim to buildings, and others overestimated how much they could carry without their magic to aid them and were only able to slow a few falling ponies to a survivable but still painful drop.
"Are they all?" Flam asked.
"They're all going out," Flim confirmed as the walls of the gorge began falling in on themselves, as it began crumbling, large cracks could be seen forming in the earth, spreading out in several directions, Flim and Flam watched on of the cracks travel towards a nearby stream, and start sucking in water, now with a part to follow the crack followed the streaming both up and down streams it continued in its original direction.
"This is bad," Flam decided, "Our Resorts are gone,"
"And we've nary a penny to show for it," Flim sighed, "Hopefully we look good in orange," as the two watched the destruction they felt the wind slowly picking up, a slight updraft, then a hefty updraft, and then Flim had to swig out his hoof when his brother started involuntarily getting slightly dragged in the direction of the gorge, several pegasi who had still been air born where helpless as they where violently sucked towards the gorge, not going into it but instead into the sky where a massive amount of clouds, both normal and thorned ones sucked up from Everfree seemed to be forming.
"Is that a cloud factory?" Flam asked as a small piece of rubble started following the pegasi who had been in the air, being sucked into the cyclone of fluffy whites and sharp blacks, "What's going on?"
"Magical Interference," Flim decided after a moment, they must have moved that Facotry close in to watch the show, and the wave following the explosion made the factory go haywire,"
Flim and Flam both felt the winds getting stronger as a few pegasi failed to fight the wind even from the ground and started getting sucked up, earth ponies and unicorns began grabbing pegasi and trying to pull them away, one Earth pony almost got sucked up with the pegasus they where holding but managed to grab a building that had remained stationary and was pulled inside by other ponies along with the pegasus.
"We need to move," Flim called out as Flams hat was sucked off, he and Flam began following the crowd as they moved away from the growing cyclone, only the be reminded of the breaking earth when the mountaintop they were on began crumbling, Flim had more than enough leverage to jump, but Flam was already slipping, without a moment's hesitation, Flim flung himself into his brother and shoved him onto solid ground as the ground slid away and dragged him down the mountain's face.
"Flim!" Flam cried out as his brother was lost to a sea of stone, before Flam could even try to help an earth Pony overpowered him and forced him to move to safety as more of the mountain began falling apart, "Flim!" Flam's cry was lost to the wind as he was carried off by the mob from where his brother had fallen.
Flim lay on the ground, his front leg not quite broken, but definitely not fine, holding it up Flim looked up at the growing cyclone, and back up to where his brother had been, no longer in sight he took some comfort in knowing he was at least safe for the moment, when he felt something running over his hoves, Flim looked down and saw water pooling around his feet, following it's flow he saw the lake where the creaking earth had split, it was no longer distinguishable as the water seemed to be rising, it took him a moment, but Flim realized it wasn't the water level going up, it was the land he was on going down, he began hobbling away, but as he tried to move the water was already rising to his knees.
unable to run with his busted leg, and with each step presenting pain and the possibility the ground was lower than his current position Flim was met with the grim reality that he had nowhere to go.
The wind was plucking up desperate Pegasai, Earth Ponies and other Unicorns were fighting for their light against the winds and crumbling land as they tried to climb to safety, other injured ponies such as himself desperately trying and failing to find help. Flim sat down in the rising water and reached into his hat, only still on his head due to something weighing it down.
Once he pulled out the flask his hat left his head to join his brother's hat in the swirling clouds, Flim popped open his flask and drank its contents, Apple Cider, his brother's and his own recipe, their last batch before retiring from it to focus on other business ventures.
"Sorry Flam," he said as the ground began tilting as the gorge's depths slowly began its new level, "I'd say I hope to see you soon, but given the situation, I hope you don't see me until you nice and aged," Flim downed the last of his cider as the mountain top above him began crumbling, and he was encased in the shadows of its jagged face breaking off, "See you in the next life Flam," Flim shut his eyes and braced himself as the rocks tumbled down, and formed his final resting place.
