Viridian Caves
Six months.
That’s how long Cole’s been living in this fucking forest. For six fucking months. Cole wished he could say that was the least of his problems, but he’d be lying if he did. Because on top of being stranded in this weird magic forest, he wasn’t even human anymore.
He was a bizarre amalgamation of a horse and various creepy crawlies. His body was stocky, muscular, and coated in hard, pitch-black chitin, and a similarly dark carapace stretched across his back and stomach. Eight eyes adorned his face, each with slitted black pupils and glowing white sclera. Two of the eyes were positioned where you’d naturally expect them, with a smaller pair on the outer edges, granting him an enhanced peripheral view. The remaining four, also small, sat just above the first set, allowing him to take in his surroundings even while looking downward.
A long, sharp-tipped horn protruded from his forehead, accompanied by a dark, spiked crown that was fused to the top of his head. His mouth was lined with razor-sharp teeth, and two prominent fangs jutted out even when his mouth was closed. Instead of a mane, he had a sleek neck fin that stretched down and ended at his carapace. Finally, four thin, wasp-like wings were attached to his back, and he had an intimidatingly large stinger attached to the end of his fuzzy abdomen.
To say he was ugly would be the understatement of the century. He was downright hideous. And the worst part? He didn’t even remember how he got here. All he remembers is driving home from work one day, passing out while on the road, and waking up stranded in this forest.
The first couple of weeks were terrifying, to say the least. On top of having no discernable way home and being stuck inside a monster's body, the forest was filled with all sorts of creatures that were out to kill him.
It's a literal miracle that he's survived this long.
Sitting up inside the small cave he called home, Cole stretched his body out before fully standing up. Blinking his eight eyes one by one, he shook the sleepiness out of his body before stepping outside his dark cave.
Shielding his eyes from the morning sun, Cole took a moment to let his eyes adjust before taking in his surroundings.
His cave was nestled into the side of a large ravine, surrounded by a barren, rocky landscape. A raging river cut through the ravine, separating his side from the opposite bank. The ground was scattered with large rocks, pebbles, and the occasional boulder, while the only vegetation consisted of sparse plants sprouting from small crevices in the earth.
Cole's stomach rumbled hungrily and he released a tired sigh.
Time to find something to eat.
Skulking through the thick brush with practiced ease, Cole stalked a small, unassuming adolescent black bear as it curiously peeked out of its den. He had been watching it for ten minutes now, and in that time, there had been no sign of its mother.
He wanted to wait a few more minutes, but his stomach grew more and more unruly with each passing second. If it kept up, the noises it was making would undoubtedly reveal him and ruin his element of stealth.
Cole knew he couldn’t pass up such a great opportunity, so with a nervous gulp, he opened his mouth and began to mimic the growls of a bear.
It was a neat trick Cole managed to discover. He found that he could mimic the sounds and calls of nearly any animal he could think of. He stumbled upon this ability while stalking a flock of birds one day.
He had simply wanted to whistle at them in a pathetic attempt to lure them over to him for a quick snack. But, to his surprise, instead of whistling, he began to produce realistic-sounding bird calls from deep within his gullet.
Astonishingly, the birds were drawn toward him, allowing him to snatch one while the rest scattered in alarm. Ever since then, he's been using it to his advantage when hunting.
The cub’s ears perked up at the sounds Cole was making, its head turning toward the thick bush he was hiding behind. As Cole continued to call it over, the cub, even more curious now, began to crawl out of its den.
Cole grinned as he watched it excitedly approach him. He waited patiently for it to get closer and closer. Only once it was close enough to brush the bush with its snout did Cole pounce.
With a hiss, Cole jumped out of the bush, surprising the cub, before clenching his sharp teeth around the cub's neck. The cub cried and thrashed loudly as Cole brought it down, a sinking feeling beginning to build up in his chest. If he doesn't finish this now, then he's going to have to deal with a very angry momma bear.
Thinking quickly, Cole reared his abdomen back before stinging the cub multiple times. The neurotoxin acted quickly, and before long, the cub was paralyzed. As soon as its thrashing stopped, Cole flipped it on its back and swiftly tore its throat out, killing it.
Sparing a glance around the area, Cole saw nothing amiss. Without wasting another second, Cole clenched his teeth around one of its legs and began dragging it away.
By the time Cole felt he had safely dragged the cub's carcass a safe distance away, it was already mid-afternoon. His stomach was ravenous at this point, gurgling constantly and filling his body with aching pains.
Coming to a stop, Cole cast a cautious look around the small clearing he was in before beginning his feast. At first, Cole didn't find eating skin, uncooked meat, nor animal guts all that appealing. Thus, he suffered for the first couple of days trying and failing to catch fish as a substitute. Only after he had grown too starved and desperate did he get his first taste of fresh meat.
Surprisingly, he found himself enjoying it. It disgusted him how much he enjoyed it, but he got used to it. Cole assumed it had something to do with his new physiology, he did seem more carnivorous in nature now.
Eventually, Cole ate enough to fill his stomach, and then some more. But no matter how much he ate, there would always be this particular aching in his stomach that wouldn't go away.
He doesn't know what to do about it, it's been a constant feeling ever since he gained this new body. It wasn't killing him… yet. But he's pretty sure that as long as it doesn't get worse then he'll be fine.
Stepping away from the half-eaten corpse with a sigh, Cole headed into the direction of a river he knew of to get a drink and perhaps relax for a while.
“Oh, sweet Queen! Help meee!” someone suddenly screamed, their plea cut short by the thunderous roar of a lion.
Cole froze as he listened to the person’s cries for help before turning and bolting in the direction the screams were coming from. Rushing through the forest’s thick brush, Cole followed the sounds of the person’s panicked screams before bursting through a wall of dense foliage into a clearing, his eyes locking onto the person who had been calling for help.
To his surprise, it was another bug-horse like him—only smaller, missing a stinger, and riddled with holes across their body. They shrieked in terror, darting and weaving desperately to evade the relentless attacks of a manticore. Cole watched in shock as the manticore swiped its large paw and successfully managed to hit the small bug-horse, sending it tumbling to the ground with a large gash on its side.
Something within Cole snapped at the sight of the small bug-horse being hurt. He felt a wave of rage surge through his body, igniting an instinctive and overwhelming need to protect the small bug-horse. With a fierce hiss, Cole’s pupils shrunk to slits, and he charged at the manticore. Lowering his head, Cole used his sharp-tipped horn to pierce the manticore in the side of its body, his horn driving deep and making the manticore roar with agonizing pain.
Yanking his horn free from the manticore's side, Cole leaped back just in time to avoid its massive scorpion stinger, which struck the ground where he stood. The manticore let out an enraged roar, its fierce gaze locking onto Cole before it staggered backward, blood seeping endlessly from its gaping wound. With a final snarl of defiance, the manticore limped away, its fatal injury forcing a retreat.
But Cole wasn’t done with it. Oh, no, no. It had dared to attack another of his kind, and for that, it would pay with its life.
With a shriek, Cole leaped high in the air, his wings buzzing as they propelled him higher. The manticore yelped in surprise as it felt Cole land on its back. The yelp was quickly followed by yowls of pain once it felt Cole sting it multiple times with his sharp stinger.
Cole grinned as he saw his stinger's neurotoxin take hold, rapidly paralyzing the manticore. The once-ferocious beast let out a pitiful mewl as it collapsed onto its side, muscles slack and unmoving, and its eyes staring blankly ahead.
Without hesitation, Cole lunged forward, snarling as his teeth sank into the manticore’s throat. A strained wheeze escaped the creature before Cole tore its throat out in one swift motion, ending its life instantly.
Cole stood over the lifeless manticore, his chest heaving with every heavy breath. Using his long, forked tongue, Cole slowly cleaned the manticore’s blood from his maw, the salty and tangy flavor bringing a pleased smirk to his face.
With the threat gone, the primal instincts that had taken over faded and allowed his conscious side to take back the reins of his mind. His pupils dilated back to their normal size, and Cole shook his head as he processed what just happened.
‘Wow, I don’t think I’ve ever gone that feral before,’ Cole thought as he gently massaged his blood-covered and aching horn.
Turning away from the dead manticore, Cole shifted his eyes to the now quivering bug-horse that was fearfully backed up against a tree. Once his eyes landed on it, it flinched back and covered its face with its hole-ridden hooves.
“Please don’t hurt me!” it- she shouted fearfully.
Cole’s eight eyes softened at the youthfulness of her voice, and he slowly approached her. For some strange reason that Cole couldn’t figure out, he felt the strongest urge to protect the young bug-horse and keep her safe from any type of harm. Coming to a stop in front of the bug-horse, Cole decided he would follow his instincts until he could bring this bug-horse back to her family.
Leaning his head down, he spoke in the softest tone he could muster, “Are you alright?”
The little bug-horse flinched before hesitantly peeking through one of the holes in her hooves, “Wh-What?”
Cole offered a soft smile before bending his forelegs and lowering himself onto his stomach. “I was asking if you were alright,” he said gently, “I saw the manticore managed to hit you. Can I take a look at it?”
The bug-horse lowered her hooves, her gaze fixed on Cole with a hint of confusion. Slowly, she exposed the side where she had been injured. Cole examined the small gash on her green carapace, letting out a quiet sigh of relief when he saw it wasn’t cut too deep. Though it was still bleeding slightly, the wound wasn’t as severe as he’d feared.
Suddenly, another bout of instincts welled up within him, and Cole allowed it to guide him. A strange pressure built deep in his throat, and with some effort, Cole forced it up through his esophagus before spitting the substance out, carefully letting it land over the bug-horse's injury.
Using a hoof, Cole began to gently smear the white, tar-like substance over her injury, making sure it was completely covered. Once he was done, the substance began to harden into a protective barrier that sealed the wound and protected it from any outside bacteria while it healed on its own.
“There, that should do the trick,” Cole said, “Now, what’s your name, sweetheart?”
The bug-horse’s cheeks grew a green color and she looked away bashfully, “B-Basal.”
Cole smiled, “It’s nice to meet you, Basal. My name’s Cole.”
Basal giggled, “Why are you named after a rock?”
Cole chuckled softly. “No, my name isn’t spelled like the rock, ‘coal.’ It’s spelled C-o-l-e.”
Basal frowned, furrowing her eyes in confusion at the foreign letters, “Huh?”
“Nothing,” Cole said with a shake of his head. “Right now, I need to take you back to your parents, I’m sure they’re worried about you, wherever they are.”
Basal nodded slowly, her confusion still evident on her face. While her Queen was technically her mother, she didn’t particularly like being called that.
Speaking of royalty, Basal only now noticed the spiked crown perched atop Cole’s head. Her eyes widened at the sight. She had always believed that only Queen changelings existed. Her Queen had never mentioned the possibility of a King changeling before, and Basal knew that none of the other Hive Queens had one either—if they did, her Queen would most certainly be scheming to steal them away.
Or maybe just kill them.
Getting up to her hooves, Basal voiced her thoughts, “Um, are you a part of any Hive, Your Highness?”
Cole furrowed his brows at the strange question, “No, I can’t say that I am. And just call me Cole, the crown’s just decoration. I can’t take it off, even if I wanted to.”
Basal’s eyes widened in excitement. Cole isn’t a part of a Hive, and if that’s true then Basal could bring him back to her Queen and she would reward her handsomely! And, considering the lack of holes present on Cole, he was absolutely thriving with love he could share with the Hive!

Day had turned to night, and they had walked so far that the forest was now a distant memory. Instead, they found themselves traversing a desolate wasteland, its barren expanse stretching endlessly before them.
Cole sighed as he ruminated on his impulsive decision to follow Basal, instincts be damned.
“Look, there it is!” Basal said, pointing a hoof in front of her.
Following her hoof, Cole’s eyes locked onto a massive structure in the distance. His jaw dropped as he took in its imposing details. The structure vaguely resembled a castle, its countless spires clawed at the sky and its rocky, gnarled shape exuded an air of intimidation.
Numerous gaping holes dotted its surface. From the holes, Cole could see an eerie green glow emanating out, painting the entrances with an eerie aura.
“That's where you live?” Cole asked incredulously as he glanced down at Basal.
“Yup,” Basal said with a nod. “Come on, I'm sure my Queen would be happy to see you and let you join the Hive!”
“Woah, hold on a second! Just because I'm not a part of a ‘Hive’ doesn't mean I want to join one! Plus, I don't think I'd be all that useful,” Cole said, his nervousness mounting.
“That’s okay! I'm sure my Queen or someling else will help you out.”
Cole briefly glanced at the empty wasteland behind him and thought about the odds of getting hopelessly lost trying to find his way back to his cave. He decided that his odds were pretty shitty, and so, with a gulp, he turned back to Basal and reluctantly followed her toward the Hive.
As they approached the entrance, Cole's eyes wandered to the bug-horses stationed at the many entry points. They were noticeably larger than Basal, likely a sign of their older age.
Clad in tough-looking blue armor and helmets, they exuded an intimidating presence as they stood as still as statues. And despite their pupil-less eyes, Cole could feel the weight of their suspicious stares following his every step as he passed them and entered the Hive.
The moment Cole entered, every single bug-horse inside had stopped whatever they were doing and stared at him. Their glowing blue eyes dug under his chitin and made him shiver with the numerous glowing green orbs clinging to the Hive walls only adding to the unnerving atmosphere.
Sweat began to bead down Cole's forehead, trickling down his face as his eight eyes darted nervously across the sprawling Hive. He scanned every corner, every shadow, on high alert for any sign of being snuck up on or ambushed.
Why were they all just staring!? Surely, Cole wasn’t that interesting.
Cole’s unease only deepened when he noticed that the pair of guards at the entrance had started tailing him and Basal. Their narrowed eyes, filled with barely concealed distrust, felt like they were boring holes into the back of his head with every step.
Eventually, after descending through multiple chambers in the Hive, Cole and Basal came to a stop in front of two massive doors that were guarded by another pair of guards. Said guards had scowls on their faces as they stared at Cole.
Basal stepped forward, a bright smile on her face, “We’re here to see the Queen!”
The two guards remained silent, their angry expressions intimidating you a bit. Then, without a word, their horns ignited with a bright green glow, and the massive doors responded in kind, enveloped by the same shimmering green aura. The doors slowly opened and Cole was forced inside the room by the guards behind him.
“Hey, what’s the big deal? I can walk by myself!” Cole snapped at the guards.
“Be quiet,” one of the guards coldly said before roughly hitting Cole over the head.
Cole glared at the guard, his scowl deepening as he rubbed the sore spot where he'd been struck. His eight eyes darted warily to the four guards now flanking him, their stances firm and leaving no room for escape without a fight.
Shifting his gaze away from them, Cole’s attention fell on the imposing, gnarled and holed throne dominating the center of the room. More specifically, the creature that sat on it.
‘She must be the Queen,’ Cole thought as he watched the tall, lithe, and regal bug-horse levitate a stone slab in front of her, her horn pulsing with a bright green glow as she lazily lay across the entire throne.
Cole spared a brief glance at his own horn, wondering if he would be able to do that as well.
The Queen’s gaze shifted to Cole, and the moment their eyes met, his body locked up and froze in place. Her two glowing green eyes, with cat-like slitted pupils, bore into him, dissecting him piece by piece with an unsettling intensity. Cole felt a part of himself rage as the Queen continued to unblinkingly stare him down, challenging his dominance.
The instinctive urge to attack caught Cole off guard, forcing him to dig his hooves into the rocky ground to keep himself from baring his sharp teeth and hissing at her. No matter how much he wanted to, he found himself unable to look away. His instincts locked him in place, unwilling to back down from the Queen’s unyielding gaze.
Thankfully, she looked away first, and with a hum, the Queen floated the stone slab in her telekinetic grip over to a bug-horse who had been dutifully sitting next to the throne.
“Deliver this to my chambers,” she said calmly.
The bug-horse gave a sharp nod, “Of course, my Queen.”
Bowing deeply, they wrapped the slab in their own glowing green aura, lifting it effortlessly into their grasp.
As the bug-horse departed with the slab in tow, the Queen's piercing green eyes slid toward the guards flanking Cole.
“Leave us,” she ordered firmly.
All four guards' eyes widened at the command, their expressions laced with worry for their Queen.
“My Queen, are you sure?” one of the guards asked hesitantly, glancing at Cole.
“...I’m going to pretend like you didn’t ask me that.”
The guard who had spoken up chittered fearfully before bowing deeply, the other three guards being quick to follow.
“A-Apologies, my Queen. We shall leave at once,” the guard said, his voice ridden with terror.
Rising from their deep bows, the four guards were quick to leave the throne room, their wings buzzing anxiously.
The Queen's gaze shifted, her piercing eyes sliding past Cole to rest on Basal.
“You too, Basal. But don’t worry, I’ll make sure you’re rewarded for bringing such a fine specimen to me,” she purred with a smirk on her face.
Basal gasped and bowed even deeper than the guards had, her forehead touching the floor, “Thank you, my Queen! I’ll make sure your reward won’t go to waste!”
“Good girl~ Now, run along,” the Queen said sweetly with a lazy shooing gesture.
Rising from her bow, Basal turned on her heels and exited the throne room, not even giving Cole so much as a second glance as the large double doors shut behind her in a green hue.
Turning back to the Queen, Cole audibly gulped as he realized the dangerous situation he found himself in.
‘I’m so fucking dead,’ he hopelessly thought.
Chrysalis’ mind buzzed with a whirlwind of questions as she descended from her anti-magic throne to the male changeling’s level. Basal had given her a brief rundown of this “Coal” once she was close enough to communicate through the Hivemind. At first, Chrysalis didn’t believe her, but out of sheer boredom, Chrysalis decided to humor Basal. After all, even if Basal had stupidly led a rival Hive member into her domain, Chrysalis would relish the chance to personally deal with the intruder.

The first, and perhaps most striking, was the complete absence of the characteristic holes that marred the bodies of her and her changelings. As she continued her slow, deliberate circling, she caught the faintest flicker of something in his posture—an instinctual unease, perhaps, or suppressed aggression. Her grin widened, fangs glinting in the eerie green glow of the chamber. She had seen the same reaction when she first made eye contact with him.
‘This one is going to be very interesting to break, ’ she thought.

Chrysalis paused mid-step, her piercing green eyes locking onto his. A sly smirk spread across her face.
“Oh, forgive me. I was simply admiring your rather… fetching features,” she said, her voice dripping with mock sweetness.

Stepping in front of him, Chrysalis smirked as she began to subtly release pheromones from her body. While she could easily overwhelm him with her scent, Chrysalis instead chose to draw things out to see what kind of information she could get out of him.
“So, Coal, tell me. Do you really not belong to a Hive, or at least have one of your own?”
Cole’s eyes widened and he took another step back, “How do you know my-” Cole’s nose flared as they caught a new, sweet smell in the air, the suddenness of it catching him off guard.
“What’s that smell?” he asked while giving the air some more experimental sniffs.
Chrysalis fought the urge to grin widely and continued, “Trying to deflect my question?” she pressured.
“Wh-What? N-No, I… I don’t have a Hive,” Cole said, his breaths heavy and his face growing hot.
“And how old are you, Coal? I’ve lived for thousands of years, but not once have I ever encountered a… special changeling such as yourself.”
“I’m… fuck… I’m twenty… twenty-one…” he said, his hooves beginning to tremble.
Chrysalis's eyes widened at the revelation. Twenty-one? Only twenty-one years of age? It seemed utterly unbelievable—yet, at the same time, it made perfect sense.
He lacked any sort of colorful characteristics that distinguished him from any Hive, simply being entirely black. It would be difficult for him to find a Hive, let alone start one. So had he been living by himself for his entire life?
