Car Talk
The faint hum of the city seeped through the thick windows of the apartment, blending with the low rumble of a car engine video playing on the TV. Manehattan’s skyline glowed faintly in the background, the lights twinkling like stars against the darkening sky. Outside, the distant honks of cabs and the occasional rumble of a modified engine hinted at the city’s ceaseless energy. Inside, however, the atmosphere was relaxed—the perfect sanctuary for two gearheads after a long day.
Donny leaned against the arm of the couch, his legs stretched out and crossed at the ankles. A takeout box of sesame chicken rested precariously on his stomach, chopsticks in hand as he lazily picked at his food. His black hoodie was slightly wrinkled, and his dark hair was still mussed from earlier when he’d been under the hood of a friend’s car. The faint scent of motor oil clung to him despite the shower he’d taken earlier.
Beside him, Cream Puff had taken up her usual spot on the other end of the couch, sprawled out like she owned the place. The earth pony had a creamy beige coat that contrasted with her short, messy brown mane. Her mane always seemed a bit windblown, like she’d just stepped out of a car going way too fast—which, knowing her, was probably accurate. Her amber eyes gleamed with energy, even as she poked idly at a half-empty carton of fried rice with a fork she gripped between her hooves.
“You know,” Cream Puff said, her voice light but carrying that familiar teasing edge, “if you ever learned how to use chopsticks like a proper Manehattanite, you’d probably finish your food twice as fast.”
Donny gave her a mock glare, holding up his chopsticks for emphasis. “Hey, I’ve got this down to a science. This is efficiency. Besides, I’ve seen you eat pizza with a fork and knife before, so you’re not one to talk.”
Cream Puff’s ears flicked back indignantly. “That was once. And it was deep dish. There are rules about that.”
“Uh-huh.” He smirked, taking another bite of his chicken. “Sure there are, Puff.”
She leaned over to nudge him with her hoof, a grin spreading across her face. “Careful, Don. Keep running your mouth, and I’ll swap your spark plugs for duds next time you’re not looking.”
Donny chuckled, shaking his head. “You wouldn’t. Not to my FD.”
“You sure about that?” Her grin turned sly as she leaned back, twirling the fork in her hoof. “I mean, it might make things a little more fair. That rotary of yours might finally have a fighting chance against my S15.”
He groaned, rubbing a hand over his face. “Here we go again. Puff, your Silvia is nice, but let’s be real: it’s not even close to touching my RX-7.”
Cream Puff snorted, tossing the fork onto the coffee table and sitting up a little straighter. “Please. At least my car doesn’t need a rebuild every time you sneeze too hard. Your ‘legendary rotary’ is a ticking time bomb, and you know it.”
“It’s called precision engineering,” Donny shot back, his voice dripping with mock indignation. “You wouldn’t understand. You’re used to your clunky inline-fours.”
“Clunky?” Her jaw dropped in exaggerated offense. “You’re talking about one of the most balanced and reliable engines ever made! Meanwhile, you’re over there praying to Celestia that your apex seals don’t give out every time you rev past six grand.”
He couldn’t help but laugh at that, shaking his head. “Alright, alright, I’ll give you that one. But let’s not pretend your S15 hasn’t been on jack stands for the past two weeks.”
Cream Puff rolled her eyes, but there was a playful glint in them. “That’s called preventative maintenance. Some of us actually care about our cars.”
“Right. Preventative maintenance,” Donny said, leaning forward to snag one of the spring rolls from her carton. She swatted at his hand halfheartedly but didn’t stop him. “Is that what you’re calling the blown turbo gasket now?”
“Oh, you’re funny,” she said, smirking as she flicked her tail against his arm. “Real original. Remind me again how many times you’ve had to borrow my tools because yours are ‘in storage’?”
“Hey, I never said you weren’t useful,” he quipped, popping the spring roll into his mouth. “Annoying, sure, but useful.”
Cream Puff just shook her head, chuckling softly. The banter was as familiar and comfortable as the faint grease stains on the carpet by the door, remnants of countless late-night projects and hurried comings and goings. For all their teasing, the two of them knew they’d be lost without each other—not that either would admit it outright.
“Speaking of tools,” she said after a moment, tilting her head toward the corner of the room where a disassembled turbo sat on a workbench, “you still serious about helping me swap that thing in?”
Donny raised an eyebrow, leaning back against the couch. “I mean, yeah, if you’re really committed to the idea. But you’re gonna owe me big time. That’s a full weekend project.”
Cream Puff’s lips curved into a mischievous smile. “Big time, huh? What’re you thinking? Pizza? Movie night?”
“I’ll think of something,” he said with a smirk, finishing off his soda. “But fair warning: I don’t come cheap.”
“Oh, I’m well aware,” she replied, her tone light but with a hint of something warmer beneath it. Their eyes met briefly, and for a moment, the usual banter gave way to an unspoken connection—the kind that didn’t need words to be understood.
Then, just as quickly, Cream Puff broke the moment with a laugh, leaning back and stretching out across the couch again. “Alright, Mr. High Maintenance. We’ll figure it out. But for now, pass me another spring roll before you eat the rest.”
Donny chuckled, grabbing the carton and holding it just out of her reach. “Say please.”
She arched an eyebrow, her grin widening. “Say goodbye to your spark plugs.”
With a laugh, he handed over the carton, and the night settled back into its easy rhythm—the sound of the city outside, the faint hum of the TV, and the unspoken understanding between two friends who might just be something more.
After a while, the clatter of chopsticks and forks slowed, signaling the inevitable food coma creeping in. Donny leaned back, resting his head on the cushion, and sighed contentedly. "I’m gonna regret eating all that tomorrow."
Cream Puff smirked, tossing her empty carton onto the coffee table. "You mean when you’re hunched over my car, cursing at bolts that refuse to come loose? Yeah, you’ll feel it."
"It’s not the bolts I’m worried about. It’s your endless commentary." He smirked, closing his eyes. "Seriously, though. What’s the plan? You wanna get an early start, or are we sleeping in?"
"Early," she said, hopping off the couch. She stretched, her tail flicking behind her, and trotted toward the workbench. "The sooner we get it done, the sooner I can embarrass you on the streets."
The living room was quiet, the gentle hum of the city outside barely breaking the calm that settled in the apartment. Cream Puff sat on one side of the couch, her legs tucked beneath her as she fiddled with the hem of her shirt, glancing over at Donny. He was leaning back against the cushions, looking out the window, the glow of the city lights catching the edges of his features. The distance between them, though only a few feet, felt more significant than usual tonight.
"So, um…" Cream Puff broke the silence, her voice hesitant but playful, "I think your RX-7 is starting to get a bit of an ego, don’t you think?"
Donny chuckled at that, glancing over at her with a teasing grin. "Ego? It’s got style. That’s a difference you wouldn’t understand, Miss S15," he replied, crossing his arms. "But, sure, I’ll admit it has a bit of swagger."
"Swagger, huh?" She raised an eyebrow, smiling. "Sounds like a personal problem."
Donny laughed, shaking his head, but something about the way her eyes softened when they met his made him pause. There was an unspoken comfort in their dynamic, something easy about the way they could joke without pretense.
"Anyway, what about you?" he asked, sitting up a little straighter. "How’s your car treating you these days? Still winning all the street races, or has the S15 taken a back seat to the RX-7 for a while?"
Cream Puff grinned, enjoying the banter. "Oh, you know me. I’ll race when the time’s right. But, honestly, I think I just like the idea of going on a nice drive, no racing involved. The S15 and I are a pretty good match for that."
Donny nodded, his eyes glinting with a hint of something softer now. "Yeah, I get that. Sometimes, it’s not about the speed... it’s about the drive itself."
The moment lingered, their voices quieter now, as if the conversation had naturally slowed down. Cream Puff found herself looking at him more intently, her fingers still gently tracing the seam of her sleeve. Donny, too, was watching her now, the easy smile on his face shifting just slightly as he realized how close they were sitting... but still, there was that space between them. It felt both familiar and a little strange, like something was about to change, but neither of them knew how to make the first move.
"So..." Cream Puff began again, her voice more tentative now. She gazed to her clock up on the wall. "Damn, it’s getting late. What do you think... about just crashing here for the night? I totaly don't mind."
Donny tilted his head thoughtfully, his gaze shifting from her face to the space between them. He could feel the shift in the air, that strange pull to get closer, but neither of them had crossed the invisible line just yet. He cleared his throat, unsure how to word what he was thinking. "I mean... for sure! I think... that sounds nice."
Cream Puff’s eyes flickered with something gentle, almost a little shy, as she shifted her legs on the couch. "Yeah, it’s been a long day, and I… I think I could use some company tonight. Just... someone to hang out with."
There was a hesitation in the air, but Donny’s eyes softened. He shifted just a little on the couch, his body moving in a way that suggested he was trying to gauge the situation. Neither of them seemed willing to take the leap just yet, but the space between them was becoming increasingly uncomfortable in its own way.
After a beat of silence, Cream Puff let out a small sigh, her hoof nervously tugging at her shirt. She glanced over at him, meeting his eyes again, but this time, something had shifted in her expression. "So, uh... y'know I've never asked."
Donny Raised an eyebrow. She continued.
"You never really talk about your old home. What was it like?" Donny fidgeted a little nervously. "Y-you don't have to talk about it! Not if you dont want to."
"Oh no, it's cool. I've just never had a reason to, yknow? Earth... lowkey sucked. Too much war, disease, evil politicians, the whole nine yards. Trust me, Equestria is leaps and bounds better."
"R-really?" She replied, gently.
"Hundered percent. I never thought things would get better."
Creampuff looked down, solemnly. She could never fathom a world with so many problems. She was so used to the busy tranquil of manehattan that it rarely occurred to her that such lifestyles exist.
"But then, of course, I came here. Even better, I met you."
She looked back up at him, hopefully.
"Thank God I did, or else I might have gone crazy. You're really something else, you know that? I know I talk a lotta shit about your car and stuff, but it's all in good fun. In reality, I'm lost without you, Puffs."
She was beet red at this point. "Y-you mean that?"
"Well, duh."
In one swift motion, she crawled to the other side of the couch and enveloped him in a big hug. "Ohhh you're so sweet! What would I do without you?"
Donny blinked, his face flushing slightly at the gesture. He hadn’t expected her to say it so directly, and for a moment, he wasn’t sure how to respond. He shifted a tad on the couch, feeling a mix of nervousness and excitement stirring in his chest.
"You'd probably turbo'ing your car by yourself," She giggled. "Plus, you may... not have someone to hug on cold nights."
She remembered the position they were in. "Oh. About that, can we stay like this? You're nice and warm."
"I-um, o-okay."
"Yay. Lemme get a little more comfortable."
With a soft breath, Cream Puff moved gently, positioning herself on his lap, her legs curling around his as she faced him. She wrapped her hooves around his neck, pulling herself closer with a shy smile. The movement was slow, almost tentative, and her cheeks flushed as she lowered her gaze, feeling the warmth of his body beneath her.
Donny stiffened for a moment as the full realization of what was happening hit him. His breath caught in his throat as he felt the softness of her body against his. His hands hovered awkwardly at his sides, unsure of where to place them, but then, slowly, he rested one hand lightly on her back, the other gently brushing against her arm. His heart raced, and he was acutely aware of the closeness, the feel of her against him.
"Uh... this is..." Donny began, his voice shaky, but there was a softness to it, a gentleness that he hadn’t expected. "Is this okay? I mean, I don’t wanna make you feel... weird."
Cream Puff lifted her head slightly, her face flushed, but there was a genuine warmth in her smile. "Yeah," she whispered. "It’s perfect."
The moment lingered in the air, both of them feeling the nervousness and the sweetness of the moment, but neither of them pulled away. Instead, they stayed close, enjoying the soft, innocent comfort of just being together, the awkwardness fading away as they settled into the quiet of the night.
Donny shifted again, letting his arms fully wrap around her, his chest pressing gently against hers. It felt easy, even with the slight shyness still there. "I’m glad you’re here," he murmured softly, his voice barely more than a whisper.
"Me too," Cream Puff replied, her eyes soft as she rested her cheek against his shoulder. "This feels nice."
They stayed like that for a while, the room around them quiet, the world outside forgotten. No words were needed as they both basked in the peaceful, innocent closeness of each other’s presence.
The living room was quiet except for the soft, rhythmic breathing of Donny and Cream Puff. The city’s hum barely reached their ears, tucked away from the comfort of the apartment. Cream Puff sat with her legs wrapped loosely around Donny’s waist, facing him, her arms securely around him. Donny, for his part, had one hand resting on her back, the other awkwardly placed on her side. He wasn’t sure how to make the next move, but for now, he was content to just breathe in the moment.
But still, the tension of being this close lingered in the air, both of them acutely aware of how much they were trying to figure out what was happening between them. The quiet was comfortable, but the silence between them grew heavy with the weight of unspoken feelings.
"So, uh..." Cream Puff spoke first, her voice a little strained, but trying to sound casual, "this is... a bit different, huh?"
Donny chuckled softly, his heart fluttering at her words. He shifted his weight slightly, glancing down at her face. "Yeah, just a little different," he replied, his voice a bit nervous, but playful. "I mean, I’ve always wanted to, uh, hang out with you like this... but I guess I didn’t expect it to feel so... weird, you know?"
Cream Puff smiled softly, her cheeks a little flushed as she shifted in his lap, her body instinctively trying to get closer. "Yeah. It feels nice, but..." she trailed off, looking up at him through her lashes. "But also kinda... I dunno... scary? In a good way. Like, it’s comfortable but new, you know?"
Donny nodded, understanding exactly what she meant. He was used to the easy back-and-forth of their relationship, the teasing, the comfort of having someone to joke around with, but this? This was different. There was something in the air now that felt... heavier, more meaningful. He was nervous too, though he wasn’t sure how to admit it.
"Yeah, I get that," he said, his voice quieter now. He shifted again, rubbing the back of his neck in a nervous gesture. "It’s like, I’m used to having you around, but... this is different. Being this close..." He let the words hang in the air, unsure how to explain the wave of emotions flooding him.
Cream Puff glanced up at him, her eyes softening as she saw the vulnerability in his expression. She smiled, her voice barely above a whisper. "I feel like we’ve been waiting for this in a way. But at the same time, it’s... new, and I don’t wanna mess it up."
Donny felt his heart skip a beat at her words. "You’re not messing anything up," he reassured her, his hand gently moving along her back, offering a comforting squeeze. "I don’t know why, but it just feels... right. You’re right here, and I don’t want to move. I just want to stay like this."
Cream Puff’s heart fluttered in her chest as she relaxed slightly into his arms, her head resting against his shoulder. She exhaled softly, a little smile tugging at her lips as she looked up at him. "I feel the same way. But I can’t lie, I’m a little nervous. Like... what happens next? Is this weird? Should we—"
"Stop overthinking," Donny cut in gently, his voice soothing as he gave her a soft but playful nudge. "This is just us. No expectations, okay? We’re here. And I like being here with you."
Cream Puff smiled, her face flushed, but she felt her nerves easing slightly. It was just them. No big moves, no pressure. Just two people sharing something that felt like it could be something more.
"Okay," she said, her voice steadying a little. "I’m glad we’re on the same page. I really like this, Donny. I like being close to you."
Donny’s heart swelled at her words, and a small grin tugged at his lips. He had always liked being with her, but this... this was something new. Something sweet. Something that made him want to take a moment and just hold on to it.
"I like it too," he murmured, his fingers gently stroking the fabric of her shirt. He paused, thinking for a moment, before suddenly reaching for the blanket draped over the back of the couch. "Hold on," he said, his voice soft. "Let me get us cozy."
With a careful movement, he pulled the blanket from the back of the couch, shaking it out as he draped it over the two of them. Cream Puff watched, her heart warming at the simple gesture. She loved how comfortable he made everything feel, even when their nerves were still fraying at the edges.
Donny gently tucked the blanket around her, wrapping her snugly against him. The warmth between them intensified, and as he settled back into the couch, he pulled her a little closer, the blanket cocooning them in a shared warmth that made the world outside feel distant and unimportant.
"This is... nice," Cream Puff murmured, nestling into his chest as she adjusted her position. She shifted slightly, her face now fully pressed against his shoulder, her arms still loosely wrapped around him.
"Yeah," Donny whispered back, his voice barely audible. "It is. I don’t wanna let go. I want to stay right here, with you, for as long as we can."
There was a quiet moment where neither of them said anything. Cream Puff just let the words sink in, a soft smile curling on her lips as she relaxed fully into the warmth of his embrace. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d felt this at ease, so comfortable in her own skin, in the moment, with him.
Donny, sensing her contentment, felt his heart race just a little faster. He brushed a lock of her hair behind her ear, his touch gentle, then wrapped his arms around her more securely. The warmth of the blanket, the proximity to her, all felt like a perfect moment. He had never imagined that just being close to someone could feel so important, but here, now, it was all he wanted.
"So, uh..." Donny started, his voice a little shaky with a mix of excitement and nerves. "What do you think about... moving this to your room? We can stay like this, but a little more comfortable?"
Cream Puff’s eyes widened a little, not expecting the suggestion but not entirely surprised either. She glanced up at him, a little embarrassed but clearly touched by his request. "You... want to move to MY room?" she asked softly, her face flushed.
"Yeah," he replied, a little bashful. "I mean, the couch is comfy and all, but I want you to be as comfortable as possible. Plus, we could, you know, hang out longer, just the two of us."
Cream Puff’s heart fluttered at the idea. She could feel the shift in the air, the deeper intimacy of the moment settling in as she nodded. "Okay," she whispered, her voice steady now, though there was still a hint of shyness in it. "I’d like that."
Donny smiled, feeling his heart skip at the thought. He wrapped his arms around her more securely, the blanket tucked tightly around them, and carefully stood up, lifting her gently with him. Cream Puff let out a soft giggle, her arms instinctively tightening around him as she nestled closer into his chest.
"Hold on tight," Donny murmured, his voice deepening with a hint of amusement. "I’m gonna carry you."
Cream Puff’s heart fluttered at the thought, but she didn’t hesitate. She wrapped her arms around his neck, smiling softly as she pressed her face against his chest. "I trust you," she whispered.
With one final glance at the cozy living room they were leaving behind, Donny carried her down the hallway, the soft weight of her against him filling him with an overwhelming sense of warmth and rightness. His heart was racing, but in a good way. He could feel her calmness, her trust, and it made him want to be the kind of person who deserved it.
Donny gently pushed the bedroom door open with his shoulder, his heart racing a little faster now that they were alone in a more private space. The room was simple but comfortable—nothing fancy, but cozy, just like the rest of the apartment. The bed was unmade, a pile of blankets and pillows tossed on top, waiting for them.
He carefully stepped inside, still holding Cream Puff close. She looked up at him with a soft smile, her cheeks pink, her eyes shining with something warm and trusting. "You sure you want to move here?" she asked quietly, her voice barely above a whisper as she gazed up at him.
Donny smiled down at her, his chest tightening with affection. "Yeah," he said softly, his tone light. "It’ll be more comfortable, trust me." His hands tightened around her just a little as he began to walk toward the bed.
As they neared it, Donny suddenly stopped, a playful glint in his eyes. Cream Puff, still held in his arms, looked at him quizzically. "What are you—?"
Without warning, Donny grinned mischievously, and in one smooth motion, he gently tossed her onto the bed, her laughter spilling out as she landed with a soft bounce. The blanket around them shifted slightly, but Cream Puff was too caught off guard by the playful action to mind. She landed comfortably, her body relaxing instantly into the softness of the bed.
"Hey!" she exclaimed, though her words were laced with laughter. She playfully kicked her legs, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "You didn’t have to just drop me like that!"
Donny chuckled as he stood at the foot of the bed, looking down at her with an amused grin. "You’re just so light, I couldn’t help myself," he teased, his voice warm and affectionate. He walked over to the side of the bed and sat down, leaning down to offer her a hand.
Cream Puff reached up to take it, smiling as he pulled her up from the bed and helped her adjust the blanket around them. She slid in beside him, her body curling into the warmth of the sheets.
Donny followed suit, carefully maneuvering himself under the covers as well. He pulled the blanket up over them both, his movements gentle but deliberate, making sure they were both tucked in snugly. For a moment, he paused, looking at her. Cream Puff had a soft smile on her face, her eyes shining with something gentle, vulnerable, and... peaceful.
There was a calmness in the air, but the subtle rush of excitement still hummed between them. They were both in this new territory, navigating a space where the boundaries between friends and something more were blurring—but it felt natural, easy, and right.
He shifted slightly on his side, sliding closer to her so they were more aligned. Cream Puff didn’t hesitate, mirroring his movements and rolling onto her side so she could face him more fully. Her hoof reached up, hesitating for only a second before it found his chest, resting there lightly, feeling the warmth of his skin through the fabric of his shirt.

Cream Puff looked up at him, her eyes half-lidded, a small smile playing at the corners of her lips. "Yeah... this is perfect." Her voice was gentle, almost sleepy, but there was a softness to it that made Donny’s chest tighten in a good way. "I really like this... being close to you like this."
He smiled back at her, his heart swelling with affection. "Me too," he murmured, his voice full of sincerity. Slowly, he brought his arm around her waist, pulling her a little closer so that she was nestled fully against him.

Donny’s hand moved to her back, his fingers lightly tracing the curve of her spine as he pulled her closer, feeling the soft warmth of her body against his.
She sighed contentedly, her breathing evening out as she melted into his embrace. Her leg brushed against his, the fabric of their clothes faintly shifting, and for a moment, the physical proximity between them seemed to amplify the connection. Donny could feel her heartbeat gently thumping against his chest, the steady rhythm calming him.
"Do you mind?" Cream Puff whispered, her voice barely audible, but the words were still there. Her hoof lightly traced patterns on his chest, her movements tentative but genuine.
Donny shook his head softly. "Not at all." His voice was low, tender, and he tightened his grip around her just a little, hoping she could feel how much he wanted her close, how much he appreciated this simple moment of closeness.

Without thinking, Donny pressed his lips gently to the top of Cream Puff’s head, his heart swelling with a warmth he wasn’t sure how to describe. The simple, soft gesture felt like everything.
