Another day another week, this was something I always said to myself every morning before getting ready for whatever job I was working today.
Something felt off though, like there was a pull in the air. I got this feeling something terrible was going to happen today, I shrugged it off my shoulders and finished getting myself cleaned and prepared to tackle today, looking in the mirror. I smiled at it, staring back at a face I’d seen everyday. The mare reflecting in the mirror was me, and I was her, with that cute grey coat, the blonde mane, and the best part, my mismatched eyes.
I blinked at the smudge on the mirror, I narrowed my eyes, “ah darn it how’d you get there! I thought I cleaned you yesterday!” I stretched out my hoof, and began wiping it, it smeared more, soon the mirror cracked and fell to the floor. “Aww shucks… another good mirror gone to waste. I just don’t know what went wrong” I gave a defeated sigh, looking sad for a moment. I went to get my broom and dustpan. “Can't have my daughter get hurt, what kinda mother would I be?” I muttered to no one, Dinky wasn’t awake yet, and she’d not be awake for another few minutes.
I’d have to get her out of bed, gently. As I did every morning, because I was a good single parent. “Well it looks good enough to me!” I whistled as I walked to deliver the shards into the garbage. I set the broom back where it belonged, and the dustpan as well. Not noticing that it fell over.
I gently tried to move to my daughter’s room, but the floorboards creaked, and I had a hard time keeping balanced while trying to not make noise. I wanted to wake my sweet baby. Not this home!
Finally I made it to her door, pushing it open. The wooden creaking. However Dinky looked sound asleep, I shouted out. “I did it!” Just as I did, I saw Dinky stir from her sleep, she was rubbing her eyes. I rubbed my foreleg with embarrassment, “aww I failed again… well enough beating myself up, Dinky. We got to get you ready for school!” I said.
“Wuh?.. Mommy nooo it’s Sunday isn’t it?” Dinky said, I then looked at the calendar, because I didn’t even know what day it was. The day was marked in red ink. It said Monday, “no see that? It’s Monday! So we gotta get you ready!” I said, approaching Dinky, but before I reached her, I tripped on one of the toys I didn’t see, and face planted onto her bed and bounced jump and hit my back on the ceiling, causing me to instinctively fly with my wings outstretched, before going head first into my daughters bookshelf.
I emerged, my head spinning, mini dash’s flying around my head, I groaned and rubbed my face. “I made another mess, it’s just one of those days I guess when nothing goes right. Dinky I’ll put them up after you leave okay?” She blinked away the dash’s, this was normal to her. Always crashing or falling. She didn’t scold her daughter.
I did my best to shakily get up to my hooves, shaking my body and stretching. I could hear my daughter giggling a bit, and I looked at her giving a big smile. This brought me joy to see her laughing and smiling. I reached out with my wings, and didn’t feel any pain. That’s good they weren’t broken. Scooping up my daughter and putting her onto my back.
“Okay mommy! I love you” Dinky said.
I paused, and felt my heart flutter. “I love you too honey.” I left her room; closing the door after avoiding the toys that made me stumble earlier, I wobbled my way to the kitchen, and set Dinky down onto the high chair. Before going to the cupboard and bringing out a loaf of bread, the bread was already pre cut, it saved me the trouble of hurting myself by accident. I remember how many times that happened as a child, it was always on Monday though, I wonder why Mondays this happened.
Getting the rest of the peanut butter and the jelly, I used a spoon and slid the peanut butter and jelly on the bread, we didn’t have knives in this house. I took out a bunch of apple slices which I bought yesterday at the market. And wrapped it as best as I could for Dinky’s lunch today, and made an extra sandwich for her right now. After I gave her lunch, I nuzzled her face and kissed her forehead. She was my sweet little baby. I went teary eyed, she had been in school only a month and I still cried when she left for school.
I helped Dinky out of the high chair, and set her down. I hugged her and wished her a happy day at school. “I’ll buy her another toy while I’m out today. If I remember” I said and giggled to myself.
“Alright! Your name's Ditsy?” The gruff sounding stallion asked me.
“No silly my name is Derpy Hooves. Nice to meet you, I’m ready for the job. What are we doing?”
“Right… Derpy. So the job that we will be handling today is moving cargo. You’ll be assisting us with moving a list of items from the client’s home, a prized flower pot, a replica anvil, a cart, and a grand piano. The buyer wants it in mint condition. If it is at all broken. That’s all of us out of a job! Hey!! Equus to you. Are you listening Derpy?”
The stallion had taken her file and put it into a cabinet that was next to the wall, it shot out a few steps. Then put her file into it, the cabinet was abnormally long.
“Such a friendly butterfly, hi mister butterfly!” I said, and then my train of thought popped, when hooves clapped in my face. “Huh? Oh yes! Moving stuffs” I said, only getting a jist of whatever the scary stallion said.
“Okay, it’s as easy as that then, okay you carry the back end. Me and the rest of my team will carry the other sides, let’s get it moving fellas!!” He said.
I grabbed it, my hooves failing to initially get a grip onto the piano, the other items on top for easier travel, but as soon as I did. I was grunting, i did get it in the air though, and we got about… up the block when it slipped from my hooves, and I heard them shout in panic for some pony to look out, I gasped in terror, watching that poor unicorn below get hit by the pot, and than the anvil, and the cart, and finally crushed by the piano, the sound of the keys sounding.
I looked away sheepishly, and could feel my face grow red. I was slapped with paper in my face. You are on suspended leave.
“Aww Celestia darn it! Another job that I failed to do, I just don’t know what I did wrong!” I begin trying to fall and immediately smack into a wall.
On the way home, I had the toy. I decided to still buy Dinky, she deserved it for being the bestest mostest wonderful daughter.” All of a sudden, I felt myself smack against the ground, wobbling as I pulled my head up. Groaning in pain. “What the hay?” I blinked, not believing my eye. I opened the bag to find hundreds of bits, this would last many many months! “Well, I at least have something to use for my daughter, while I wait for them to need me! Derpy! I guess today is looking up!” I said, not understanding that bags don’t magically come out of the sky.
I got up to my hooves, energy floating back into me from the blessing by the two princesses, “such a good day! I can’t wait to tell Dinky about it!”
On que, Dinky came inside, she looked tired, and wobbled. I walked over and pulled her onto my back. “Dinky look!” Using my wing to get the toy from my saddlebag. I had grabbed it after they fired me, no point having my stuff on their job site, I had their cause it would’ve been heavy for flying.
The toy was a doll of the adventurer daring doo, Dinky really loved reading all of Daring Doo’s books, my daughter was so smart for her age, I would borrow the books from the Ponyville library. I never really knew the mare there, but she did look like the unicorn I dropped the piano on earlier today. I’d always return the books though after Dinky finished them. I avoided returning them on Mondays though. Because those days my clumsiness and luck would be worse.
Dinky thanked me, and clutched the doll proudly, making sounds while swinging it around in her hooves. She could use magic, but there was a problem of her fainting every time she strained herself. Doctors didn’t know what to do to treat her. She’s my little sweetie regardless, and I’ll always love her.
I set Dinky down to go play, taking the time to finally relax and unwind. I went to sit on the couch, but I miscalculated and my flank fell onto the floor, I yelled in pain, rubbing my sore bottom, however because of the thud, I felt something land onto my eyes, soon it was a world of searing pain and burning, in my blinking haze, and blood shot eyes, I saw that a bottle of bubbles was opened and leaking out. Running around and screaming, shaking the whole house, I ran head first into a wall, crashing my head straight through it.
Hours passed and the moon was well midway through the sky, I yawned out, my eyes still burned, but Dinky helped me rub my face out with water, in my panic I caused a head sized hole in the living room wall. The clock sounded, and I froze waiting for something to fall or anything to smack me, or for me to trip. Nothing, just the clock, and then silence. I breathed a sigh of relief.
That’s when I felt it, the pull in the air, it was gone, and I took a step toward my bedroom. My legs didn’t feel awkward anymore. My trot was completely normal, I didn’t feel the slightest discomfort or that I was going to fall. I made it to my bed, and finally laid myself to sleep.
Tomorrow… tomorrow wouldn’t bring any Monday Blues…
