Prologue
The Life of one's friends can cause much pain, whether unintentionally or through conscious effort.
How we approach this, can make or break bonds that would otherwise last a lifetime
Doctor Diamond Blade trotted calmly through the maternity ward, the sounds of other hospital staff bustling about. His ears swiveled a bit, taking in the beeping of the equipment. Today had been an exciting day for many, but for now, he was visiting a lucky young couple who had recently welcomed their little foal to the world a couple days ago.
"Greetings Mister Firelight, Misses Double Aurora. How has everypony been this evening?" Diamond Blade's gentle voice rang throughout room 285, alerting the couple to his arrival. Firelight, a stallion with a muted, violet coat, stood and tipped his bowler hat.
"We've been doing well, Doctor."
"And how's our new bundle of joy doing?"
Double Aurora, who's coat glistened with a brilliant pink shine, smiled warmly and nodded. her wings gently moved around softly towards her husband.
"She is doing fine Doctor..."
her wings fell to the bed, and she nuzzled the aforementioned foal in her arms.
"Glad to see you're strength has returned a bit, Miss Aurora, but let's take a look at your charts, just to be safe. After thats done, we can check you two out!" He beamed brightly as the two sighed in relief. Double Aurora's wings once again moved through the air, gently signing towards Firelight.
"We can go home...."
"Yes dear, and our lil baby waby will be able to see her home for the first time!" he nuzzled Double Aurora affectionately as she silently giggled.
Doctor Diamond Blade took a few moments to examing Double Aurora's vitals, before approving of her release and calling for a wheelchair.
"I want you two to make sure that Miss Aurora gets her wing excersizes in so she can regain strength. We don't want her losing them, do we?" Diamond Blade chuckled at the horrified look Aurora gave him. "Joking my dear, just joking." He took the clipboard and started jotting down notes.
"Now, I do have one last thing I need to ask before you two are released."
The two looked between each other, then back at him.
"And what would that be, Doctor?"
Diamond Blade glanced at them, his eyes sparkling.
"Have you come up with a name for the little filly?"
Firelight and Double Aurora glanced at each other, warm smiles spreading across their faces.
"We have"
"Do tell!"
"Starlight Glimmer."
With a silent gasp, Double Aurora caught the bowl of oats before it hit the ground. She sighed in relief that none had spilled, then set it back onto the table. Nuzzling the filly gently, Aurora nipped Starlight's ear as a corrective measure. Pulling away, she shook her head, then tapped on the table.
It stays on the table is what she seemed to say. Starlight didn't know pegasi sign language yet, so using that was pointless.
"We'll teach her once she's a few years older." Firelight had said.
With a giggle, the baby unicorn's horn sparked brightly. Double Aurora flinched back, her eyes wide.
"Doubly bubbly, I'm home!" Firelight trotted into the kitchen with a big smile on his face....which quickly fell as he opened his eyes. In the center of their kitchen sat Double Aurora, a grouchy look on her face as oats dripped down her snout onto the floor. On her head was an overturned bowl, clearly the source of her frustration.
Firelight's face contorted in amusement, which transformed into laughter as Aurora shook the bowl off, splattering oats everywhere. The glow of his magic enveloped the bowl and returned it to the table, as he grabbed a towel and started to gently clean his wife's face.
"I'm sorry Doubles, but you should've seen it." He chuckled lightly as her eyes narrowed. Aurora's wings moved furiously, which caused Starlight to giggle again. "Now, now Doubles, she doesn't need to know those words....At least not yet."
Double Aurora grabbed the towel out of his grip and tossed it aside with a huff.
"Not funny, Firelight...." She stood, grabbed the bowl and brought it to the sink. "She had another burst of magic, which I am not equipped to deal with." She motioned to her forehead.
"Right." Firelight kicked at the ground lightly. "Buuut i know somepony who is!"
Aurora raised an eyebrow.
"is it you-"
"ME!"
Firelight jumped foreword and embraced his wife heartily. "I've been looking in to getting some time off so i can help you out! Just tell me what you need me to do, and I'll do everything in my power to help!"
Double Aurora's eyes widened as she gently pushed him away
"Please tell me you remembered to take PAYED time off!"
"Yes, yes. I even submitted the form in triplicate....like you keep telling me too." He tapped his hooves together. "Which I realize wasn't necessary but.....I thought it'd help....besides..." He hugged her tightly. "I think my boss wanted me out as much as I did."
Rolling her eyes, she picked up Starlight and set the foal gently in the foal carrier on her back. The two made their way into the living room and set Starlight on the sofa.
"It would help if Sky Sparrow actually gave a damn about your hard work....you two would get along better." Double Aurora sat next to their daughter and ran her hoof gently through the foal's mane.
"I know, I know....but that's on him. I got the time off, and that's what's important. To hell with Sky Sparrow and his haughty attitude."
She responded with another eye roll.
"Yes, to hell with my uncle, who owns the museum you work at. Real subtle." She smirked. Firelight had the dignity to blush.
"Fair point. Hey, I'm still in the running to inherit the place though, if I keep working hard!"
"Subtle as a brick in cloudsdale."
They were interrupted by the sound of Starlight yawning loudly. Looking at each other, the young couple smiled and kissed the filly on her forehead.
"GUH!" Starlight's eyes snapped open as the train bumped slightly. With a growl, she looked around. Everypony else had gotten off at the last stop, and her stop was up next.
"Next stop! Fetlock Harbor! Next stop, Fetlock Harbor!"
Starlight slammed her head against the window and groaned.
"I miss my parents....."
