The Dying Raysby wwolf_igChaptersOneTwoThreeFourFiveOneSunset Shimmer, in every sense of the word, was exhausted. She'd not had a good day already, having woken up about 2 hours early, unable to get back to sleep. This had been followed by a very long-feeling day of school, and she didn't even get to see her friends because of some extra activity the school wanted her help with. And to top it all off, she'd just had what felt like the longest work shift of her life. And she still hadn't done any of her homework. Sunset took a deep breath, feeling the stress start to get to her. However; there were positives. There was a sleepover tonight - at Rarity's. She'd still get to see her friends. Plus, if she'd done enough tonight, she was looking at a promotion, or a raise at least. That would be nice. But she just couldn't shake off a lingering feeling, that the stress was going to be just too much. Sunset knew she was prone to imploding on a stressful day. If someone pushed her just a bit too far, it could quickly turn into a one-sided shouting match as Sunset let her frustrations free. And she didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings. And that was if she was lucky. Otherwise she'd have a massive panic attack before passing out on the floor where she stood. She sighed as she pulled on her trademark leather jacket, slipping her phone from her back pocket and beginning to scroll through the list of notifications. An email from a teacher, an invite to some party next week, a few news notifications, a couple interesting social media posts, a message from Twilight Sparkle... Wait. A message from Twilight? Sunset's heart skipped a beat as she thought of the other girl, and she shook herself, opening the message. [16:04] T: Looking forward to seeing you tonight! Sorry we didn't get to talk earlier. [16:07] T: You are coming, right? [16:07] T: Rarity said you seemed a bit stressed earlier. Sunset groaned inwardly. She was going to have to make a decision now. It was already 10:00, her boss having let Sunset clock out an hour early for this sleepover. Some part of her knew going could turn into a big mistake, but the thought of disappointing her friends, disappointing Twilight, overruled her hesitations. She sighed to herself. [22:05] S: Sorry, was at work. I'll be there, just gotta freshen up first. See you soon! :) Sunset pushed open the side door with her shoulder, stepping out into the cool autumn breeze. The parking lot was mostly empty here, and she took a chance to walk slowly and admire the scenery. Or, what scenery there was. When she reached her motorcycle, she leaned against it, looking up to the heavens and the stars that glittered in them. She loved autumn. There was no point in denying it. The weather was often cool, but not too much. The sunset was earlier, allowing her to comfortably watch it from her apartment window. There was more rain, sure, but honestly? She didn't mind rain that much. Hell, sometimes it could be nice. And for another bonus? The leaves went the same colour as her hair. Score. She sighed again before slipping her helmet out of it's bag and pulling it on, cursing the skirt and short socks she had to wear for her work uniform. At least she had her jacket. Sunset brought the engine to life before taking one last look at the stars. Is this a mistake? Is this going to backfire? Sunset shook her head, dismissing the doubtful thoughts swirling around her head, and pulled away from her parking space. It was nearing half 11 when Sunset finally killed the motorcycle's engine, gliding the last few feet to stop alongside Applejack's pickup. She flicked down the kickstand and stepped off, quickly rubbing her hands together to try and warm them up. As much as she lived for the autumn, riding in it was like being stabbed by icicles. Very sharp, very cold icicles. She traded the helmet for a small cardboard box and her lighter in the bike bag. She hesitated for a second, but then pulled a cigarette from the box anyway, balancing it between her lips before lighting it. Sunset took a long drag, feeling herself relax as she leaned on the pickup. She felt a little guilty, as she had promised to quit. And for a while she had, but after the whole memory stone situation, she found herself falling back on the quick stress relief more and more often. "Well, well, well." Shit. "If it isn't Sun-set Shimmer, smoking in my front yard. Darling, we told you to quit." Sunset chuckled nervously, turning to face the girl, who wore a bright white dress with purple gemstones around the base, matching her hair. "Eheh, heyy, Rarityy, I- uh-" "No no no, don't try and give me any excuses Sunset. Come on, put it out." Sunset obliged slowly, taking another drag before flicking the cig to the floor and grinding it out with her boot heel. "Good. Now give me the packet." Sunset looked up in shock. "Don't you think that's a little far-" "Sunset. Packet. Now." Sunset grumbled to herself, slipping on her backpack and surrendering the small packet at the door. "Thank you. I don't even know how you keep managing to get your hands on these." Sunset only shrugged, not willing to provide an answer. Rarity sighed in response, before pulling the taller girl into a hug. "It is good to see you again. It may have only been a day but it feels longer. Now come on, we need to sort you out." "I don't need-" "You do. You smell of smoke." Sunset sighed, again. "Fine, you win." "House always wins, darling," she replied, sing-song voice in full swing. She rummaged briefly in a drawer before pulling out a small pink bottle. "Hold still, now." The fashionista sprayed a few bursts over Sunset's jacket before moving in to check. She then stood back, hesitating for a moment. Then she sighed. "Alright Sunset. I don't know how long you've been smoking for again, and I don't want to deprive you of one should you need it. However, it will only be if you need it." She paused. "And if I found out you played me for a cigarette when you didn't need one, even Applejack won't be able to stop me from burning that jacket." Sunset nodded in acceptance. That seemed reasonable. "Now come on. The others are in the living room." "Rarity?" "Yes?" "...Thank you." The girl smiled. "Pizza will be about 10 minutes. Tops 20." TwoSunset was still stressed, but she'd been having fun. Or as much fun as she could with a weight looming on her back. They were all slightly drunk, bar Fluttershy, and some more than others, but they were trying their best to keep it in moderation. Unfortunately for Sunset, being drunk brought out a side of Twilight that was hard to resist. Currently, she was lying across the sofa, head in Sunset's lap. She looked peaceful, but would pout whenever Sunset stopped stroking her soft purple hair to accept a new drink. It was adorable, and made Sunset's heart melt a little each time. It was these kinds of moments that made her wonder if Twilight might actually like her, like she liked her, but she never gave any indication while sober. Truthfully, it stressed Sunset out more. Adorable as she might be, Sunset always found her mind running away from her whenever she thought about Twilight. "Sunset?" "Hmm?" "Less thinking, more petting." Sunset giggled at the taller girl, who was frowning up at her. "One minute. I need to go to the bathroom." "Hmph." Despite her irritation, Twilight moved out of Sunset's lap, and she stood up, flicking her wrist as she caught Rarity's eye. The girl nodded, and started to slip out if her conversation as Sunset moved into the kitchen. Sunset waited in the kitchen, before stepping onto the front porch with the other girl. "Well, I'm impressed, Sunset. You made it to 1:30." "It's only 1:30?! Ugh." Rarity patted her shoulder sympathetically, handing her a cigarette and lighting it. "We'll be going to bed soon, I imagine. It might be the weekend, but they all still have things to do tomorrow." Sunset took a drag and blew the smoke into the air, sighing. "Sunset, dear?" Sunset looked over. "Have you been having nightmares again?" Sunset froze for a moment before nodding, reluctantly. "You haven't received any bad messages, have you?" Again, a reluctant nod. Rarity put her head in her hands. "You should've told us." "I didn't want to stress any of you out." "And you only stressed yourself out in the process, darling. It's quite obvious." "How-" "You have more makeup on than usual, you're hiding the bags under your eyes, Sunset. You can never fool a fashionista." Sunset sighed, mildly irritated with herself. "I'll be fine." "Sunset, you need to talk to someone-" "I'm. Fine, Rarity. Thanks." "Then at least talk to Twilight." "Wha-" "She has a crush on you! You have a crush on her! Sunset, are you blind?" Sunset stepped back, shocked, and Rarity threw a hand over her mouth. "Oh dear. I think I might have drunk too many cocktails." Sunset's head was reeling. Twilight liked her? What should she do? Should she ask her out? Now? Tomorrow? Her train of thought was already spiralling when they were interrupted as Rainbow Dash staggered onto the balcony with them. "Sunset, we told you to stop smoking." Her words were slurred, and it was clear she was very, very drunk. "I thought I told Fluttershy to keep an eye on your drinking!" "Fluttershy can't say no to a pretty face." Rarity sighed. "You shouldn't be abusing your relationship for more drinks, Rainbow." The girl seemed to sober up for a moment at this, nodding sheepishly, before she turned to Sunset again. "Anyway, Sunset, I wanted to ask you." She paused, like some part of her registered it was a bad idea. Then the alcohol won out. "What was it like when we kicked your ass? With the laser, ba-" Rarity slammed her hand over Rainbow Dash's mouth, pushing her back inside. "Rainbow Dash! How dare you!" "What? I was curious?" "GIRLS. PROBLEM!" Sunset heard clamouring inside as the others reacted, but it was too late for her. Memories were pouring through her head, replays of endless nightmares and days spent alone. The Fall Formal, years before. Anon-A-Miss. The battle of the bands, confronting the sirens in the halls as they echoed her fears right back at her. The blind anger she'd felt at Twilight during the friendship games. Being separated at Camp Everfree. She felt her grip on the porch railing tighten, the cigarette in her hands forgotten. Her breathing sped up, and she felt tears in her eyes and her legs go weak. She sank to the floor on her knees, then onto her back. "Sunset? Sunset, okay honey, I'm here. I need ya to breathe in for me, 'kay? Deep breath in, you hear me?" It was Applejack. Thank Celestia for Applejack. She nodded, but her vision was going black as she tried desperately to take a deep breath. "Okay. Okay Sunset. You're doing great. Stay with me here." But try as she might, Sunset couldn't breathe. Her vision lightened temporarily, and she saw the concerned outlines of her friends looking down at her, but she couldn't make out who. "Sunset? We're gonna call someone out for ya, okay? Just hang in there." Sunset grabbed Applejack's wrist, shaking her head. She couldn't let anyone else see her like this. "Shit, Sunset, we gotta do somethin! Your heart rate is through the roof!" But Sunset couldn't hear her. The words were muffled, their faces dark and blurry. Sunset felt herself slip into darkness. Sunset woke up in her sleeping bag and felt the dried tears on her face. She sat up, and instantly regretted it as her head began pounding, but her sudden movement woke up Applejack on the sofa. "Take it easy, Sunset." Applejack looked frazzled, and Sunset guessed she'd stayed awake to keep an eye on her until she'd fallen asleep. "You've been alseep only a few hours." "What happened? Did you call an ambulance?" "Ya musta had the mother of all panic attacks. But when ya fainted ya started breathin fine so we just put ya ta bed." Sunset groaned and faceplanted. "I'm so sorry. I ruined your night." "Ya ain't ruined nobody's night, sugarcube." "I have. I ruined everyone's night." "No, ya ain't. An I ain't gonna argue with ya on this, either." she added as Sunset opened her mouth. She thought for a moment, then stood up slowly. "I'm gonna go home." Applejack frowned. "Do ya want me to drive ya? It'll be dangerous out there on ya bike." "I can't have you do that, you've done too much for me already." "Sunset, it ain't a good idea." "I need to be alone, okay?" "Why?" "I- I just need to." "Ya should wait until it's light at least." Sunset kept packing a few things into her bag. "Sunset, please, just let me drive ya." Sunset shook her head as she pulled on her jacket. Before her friend could get in another word, and potentially convince her to stay, Sunset began making her way outside. "Sunset- wait! Please! Just wait until it's light! Ya ain't in a fit state for ridin!" Sunset could feel the tears pooling in her eyes again, could hear the desperation in AJs voice. But her mind was made up. She shut the door behind her before running over to her bike and starting the engine, not even bothering with her helmet. Applejack flung the door open. "Sunset! Stop!" She swung the bike around and pulled out of the drive. "Sunset!" Sunset couldn't think clearly as she roared down the street, which was unsurprisingly empty at... she checked the clock on the motorcycle. 4:00 in the morning. She could tell she was over the speed limit, but she didn't care. She just needed to get home. She realised with a start she was sobbing. Applejack's reassurances and pleas must have gotten to her. Sunset squeezed her eyes shut, trying to blink the tears out of her eyes. When she opened them again, she slammed her accelerator and swerved. A black SUV was pulling into the road at decent speed. Shit. Despite the extra speed put on by the bike, she felt the back end twist out and slide. Sunset struggled desperately against the handles, trying desperately to keep herself upright. Shitshitshit- The bike crunched onto her leg with it's full weight, and she let out a small scream and a string of curses. Her head smacked against the concrete and she slid down the road, eventually coming to a stop. Privately, she wondered if she deserved this for brushing off AJ, and the rest of her friends' help, as a string of curses flooded through the rest of her brain. She let out a groan and rolled onto her front, trying to push herself up. Sunset began crawling desperately for the edge of the road, pain tearing through her leg. Her head ached with a vengeance, and she could feel blood flooding her mouth. Reaching the edge of the road, she threw up a mix of puke and blood before trying to slip her phone out of her pocket. Despite her headache, Sunset knew she had mere seconds before she passed out. A head injury was almost certain, given that she hadn't got her helmet on, and that meant the moment her adrenaline rush ran out, she was gone. She needed to call someone. Anyone. Sunset navigated to her contacts desperately, hearing footsteps in the distance. AJ called her at that moment, the bright light and vibration confusing her for a moment. "Sunset? Hun? Did ya make it home alright? Ya should've just let me take ya, I've been worried sick!" "AJ- I-" "Sunset?! Are ya alright?" "I- I need. Help-" For the second time that night, the world went black. Author's Note [Note copied from Archive] small change made 14th Jan '25 due to shifting timeline. I really need to sort out a plan for this lmao, but really right now it's just what I want when i want (recipe for disaster, prepare for me to simply implode) ThreeApplejack didn't want to wake the others. Not if she didn't have to. And so she was pacing downstairs, calling Sunset's phone every few minutes, each one going to voicemail. "Hey, this is Sunset Shimmer. I can't pick up your call right now, but leave a message and I'll get back to you as soon as possible. Thanks, bye!" Applejack growled as she put the phone down again. She should have held her back. Physically stopped her from leaving. It was far too dangerous for someone out there right now. Below freezing, pitch black, and heavens knew Sunset wasn't in the right frame of mind for it. She grabbed the coffee she'd made, and again debated going after the amber girl in her pickup. But she'd be too far now. She just had to wait for Sunset to pick up. Applejack took a deep breath, trying to calm herself down. She was worried. Maybe she should wake up Rarity, just for a little comfort and companionship. She called Sunset's phone again, not expecting much. To her surprise, she picked up. "Sunset? Hun? Did ya make it home alright? Ya should've just let me take ya! I've been worried sick!" Sunset's voice came back to her, but AJ could tell, instantly, something was off. Very off. "AJ- I-" Her words were slurred, uncertain. Even if she was still a little drunk, Sunset didn't slur her words. Fuck, she'd watched Sunset chug 4 shots of vodka straight on a dare without much issue. AJ grabbed the phone off the counter and held it up, too worried to care how loud she was. "Sunset?! Are ya alright?" "I- I need. Help-" "Sunset! Honey, talk to me, where are ya? What's happened?" Applejack grabbed her pickups keys from the counter. There was no response. "SUNSET!" AJ heard footsteps, both behind her and through the phone. "AJ? What's wr-" Applejack held a hand up to Twilight, who had come down the stairs, Rarity trailing slightly behind her. She could hear faint voices through the phone. "Call a fucking-!" "Shit- Phone's in the car!" "Use hers! Fucking hurry!" She heard the phone being grabbed and lifted. "Sunset, what the fucks happened?!" The response chilled AJ to the core. "Clear the line! I need an ambulance!" "Wha- Sunset?!" The call went dead. "Applejack, what the fuck is going on!?" Demanded Rarity. "Where's Sunset?" Applejack felt shock coursing through her system. She'd known it was dangerous, but, she'd never thought... "S- She woke up about 20 minutes ago. Wanted to go home. Wouldn't listen to me, wouldn't let me drive her." Twilight's eyes widened at Applejack's words. She swallowed before continuing, but couldn't manage more than a whisper. "I think she's crashed." Twilight felt her heart shatter into a million pieces. "No.. no you're wrong. She- she wouldn't do that." She looked around for support, but Rarity hung her head in shame as the others began filtering downstairs. "Would she?" Her own voice was barely a whisper. Pinkie Pie, who was guiding both her and Applejack to the sofa with firm shoulder grips, spoke quietly. "Sunset got caught smoking outside by Rarity because she was like suuuper stressed out. Normally, Sunset wouldn't come if she was like that, which means something or, rather, someone convinced her to come anyway." "Who?!" "You, Twilight. Sunset has a pretty big crush on you. She'd do anything to make you happy." What. They were words confirming what she'd hoped beyond hope could be true for the longest time. But now- Pinkie held up a finger, forcing Twilight to let her continue. "So Rarity forced Sunset to give up her smokes so she wasn't constantly leaving the party for a hit, but this caused Sunset's stress to build a lot faster, especially with you being so close to her." The girl's bright pink hair deflated as she continued. "So when she went outside for a hit, she wasn't relieving enough stress, fast enough. Then when Rainbow Dash asked that stupid fucking question about the Fall Formal, it tipped Sunset over the edge." Pinkie sighed. "Sunset has two types of implosion. Either an angry shouting match, or a massive panic attack. No matter which, she can never think straight afterwards and is prone to making stupid decisions that no one can talk her down from." Twilight looked at the pink party planner, who was usually so full of life, smiling sadly at her. "Pinkie sense. Fat load of help it was calming down Sunset. I should have noticed earlier-" "No, Pinkie." AJ cut in, voice soft but firm. "We all shoulda been more aware. It's no one here's fault." She nodded to herself, as if she was trying to convince herself more than the others. "No ones fault." She repeated. Twilight felt her already shattered heart break even further, and despite her best efforts, tears began rolling down her cheeks, quickly converting into a sob. She felt her friends sit on the couch alongside her, all wrapping themselves into a massive group hug. Minus one, missing individual. They must have sat there for hours, as Twilight woke with a start to find the sun out and her phone vibrating. She picked it up to find an unknown ID. "Hello?" "Miss Sparkle? My name is Bleeding Heart, from the Canterlot City Hospital." The voice paused. "You're listed as one of the primary emergency contacts for Sunset Shimmer. I'm- I'm afraid there's been an accident." Twilight felt herself begin to cry again, worst fears confirmed, trying her best not to sob through the phone. "Is- is she okay?" "I can tell you that her condition is stable. However, she isn't responding to external stimuli, and- and may be in a coma. If you could come to visit, we will have a more complete picture for you, and you may have to make a few decisions on her behalf." The ride to the hospital was wordless, no one really daring to breathe louder than a whisper. Twilight walked to the front desk, with Applejack next to her, the others behind. "H-hello? I'm Twilight Sparkle, I'm here for Sunset Shimmer? Me and my friends are her emergency contacts." The receptionist blinked and nodded. "Of course, dear. I'm Bleeding Heart. I'm sorry I couldn't give you a complete picture over the phone." Bleeding Heart was slightly on the pink side, with a full red head of hair. The woman span around, pulling a folder from the rack behind her. "From what I can see here, her right leg is broken in 3 places and she suffered blunt force trauma to the back of her head, likely due to hitting the road without a helmet." The woman paused. "She also suffered internal bleeding, which combined with the head hit has, in fact, put her into a coma. She should wake up, but we don't know the timeframe of when, likely not until most of her body has healed, which could be anywhere from a few days to a few weeks." She let out a hefty sigh. "She was lucky not to die." The folder was passed to Twilight, who tried her best not to cry again. "Sunset has given you permission to take care of her belongings and pet, as well as to make any decisions regarding her care jointly with her mother." Bleeding Heart hesitated before speaking in an even softer voice. "She has also given you and her mother permission to decide whether or not to keep her on life support should she stay in a coma past four weeks." She looked up from the computer screen, where she'd been looking up Sunset's records and permissions, established many months earlier. "If it's any consolation, it's clear she trusted you all with her life." Twilight began to cry as she nodded, turning to Applejack to bury her head into her chest. Applejack petted her, and Twilight could tell the farm girl was trying hard not to cry herself. "She's in room 502, her mother is already there." Twilight barely registered the words as she was led back to her friends, folder clutched to her chest. Author's Note [Copied from Archive] 19th Dec- Made some changes to this chapter to facilitate some new ideas and also making writing easier for me. This does also mean you'll be getting another prequel at some point, but tbh at this point I've got half the series planned out lmaooo -~- Previous End Note: RAHH Dying Rays!! I think this is probably going to come out as one of my longest writing projects ever but you know what? So totally worth it. I do have to warn you now, chapters may be far between, especially with some real-life things coming up in the next month or so, and I've already put this project on a bit of a backburner in order to work on its prequel, which currently doesn't have a title. However!! There is still more to come. I'm going to post the first few chapters of my other project, Storm in a Bottle (probably tomorrow) which is based in the Friendship is Magic (FIM) world rather than Equestria Girls (EQG) That one is on even more of a backburner though, so I can't promise that will get updated very much. In terms of things, this is going to be the main world I'm writing in for EQG, so expect relationships and characters you see here to last. As said already, working on a prequel, but i'll probably do a prequel or two alongside that one for more juicy juicy backstory/ lore which'll have a few things in it inspired by the amazing shallow15's Repercussions Trilogy. GO READ IT!! (I'm not straight up stealing plot or anything from it, just using it to base some ideas around. I'll be doing my own interpretations of characters and locales.) As well as that, I do have a few ideas for a sequel based around some notes I wrote a while ago, but that won't come until after I finish Dying Rays and maybe Storm in a Bottle. ANYWAY thank you so much for reading, I hope you enjoyed, and if you liked this and haven't read it yet, go look at Bleeding Sunsets, written by me. LOVE YOU ALL MAKE SURE YOU SLEEP AND HYDRATE <3 FourPrincipal Celestia, Sunset's adopted mother, had already been there when the girls had got to Sunset's hospital room, and they had all stayed in near complete silence as Sunset slept in front if them. Eventually, most of them had been called away for the day, which resulted in Celestia and Pinkie staying that night with Rainbow and Fluttershy to relieve them the next morning. And so Twilight found herself walking silently alongside Fluttershy towards Sunset's - well, Celestia's - house, later in the day. It was a relatively nice but simple building, in terms of things, with 2 floors, an attached annex and a garage as well as a spacious front garden and driveway space for 3 vehicles, usually Sunset's motorcycle, Celestia's sedan, and Luna's SUV, but it looked scarily empty with just Luna's SUV there. She took a breath before knocking at the door, and as they waited they could hear shuffling inside before they were greeted by a teary-eyed Vice Principal Luna, although she insisted on being just Luna outside of school. Luna wordlessly allowed them in before showing them through the dining room and living room to Sunset's annex, then shuffling back through the kitchen. Even if Twilight wanted to say something to her, she wouldn't have known what to say, so she instead elected to stick to thank you, which earned her a nod from the aunt. Pushing open the door revealed a chalet-style room, as instead of roof storage there was a raised bedroom which overlooked the rest of the annex. In the front of the room was a living space leading to the front of the house, with it's own TV and sofas. There was a small area in the middle with an L desk, boasting a small computer setup on one side and a collection of school work and gadgets on the other. Pride of place went to the small studio Sunset had underneath her bedroom, the walls decorated with both wooden and orange soundproof paneling which contrasted with the black painted walls around the rest of the annex. There were a few guitars hung on the walls as well as a single-seat sofa, a stool, a microphone and easel, a few pieces of production technology and some other art supplies., as well as a pair of cameras pointed at the stool from different directions. There was also a door out to the back garden nestled under the staircase leading to Sunset's bedroom, where the small porch area where Sunset kept the barbeque the girls had gotten her when she'd moved in with Celestia was, and the front facing skylight window with a half-drawn blind cast light over the living space, hiding the rest of the room in shadow. Twilight wasn't sure how long she spent looking around Sunset's living space from the door, but when Fluttershy walked across her field of view, headed into the kitchen space. She shook her head and headed for the desk, settling into the desk chair and picking up one of the devices sat on the desk. She recognised it as a half-dismantled radio, and recalled loosely that Sunset had told her about beginning efforts to gain a better understanding of the world's technology, but there were also a few modifications on the motherboard. Before Twilight could begin a closer investigation, however, she noticed the computer was still turned on, and moving the mouse awarded her with Sunset's desktop a few moments later. She wasn't quite sure why the open tab caught her eye, as, after all, she'd simply intended to shut the thing down. But she opened it anyway, and found herself looking at the latest post by Flanksy, that one street artist the girls went on about all the time. It was another moment before she realised the account that Sunset was logged into was Flanksy. Which meant... She rolled back on the chair, looking over to Sunset's studio area, where, sure enough, there was a duffel bag with a few cans of spray paint peeking out of the top. She felt her eyes widening before closing the tab, which resulted in it flicking open to another tab, this time a YouTube page. It was Sunset's this time, but not the one she had associated with the Rainbooms where she did most of her music or gaming videos. She'd never seen this channel before, and open was a video uploaded from the previous night, and now that she thought about it she remembered Sunset having her laptop out for a little while when they'd been sat next to each other. She looked at the title. 'Midnight Sessions: Essie & Paul.' Glancing around the desk, Twilight located a set of headphones and pulled them on, making sure they were connected. Fluttershy was playing with Ray on the coffee table, and she didn't want to disturb them. Taking a deep breath to prepare herself, she pressed play. "Hey, I know a lot of people have been after more music from me and the Rainbooms, but we're currently on a break, dealing with some... 'IRL' stuff. But rather than sit here and do nothing, I decided I could resume an old series from this channel, the Midnight Sessions." Twilight watched as Sunset shifted on the stool, adjusting her grip on the guitar as the camera changed to be pointed at her side instead of her face. "It's about Quarter Past Midnight as I record this, so uh, hopefully I don't wake anyone up. This is an accoustic cover of Essie and Paul, by Bastille." She went to begin playing, but hesitated. "Actually, uh, the other Rainboom's don't know about this channel, so I'd like to take the chance to dedicate this to one of them. I won't say her name, but she means more to me than she'll ever possibly know." She paused again, taking a sip from what looked like a glass of red wine. "I just hope one day I have the confidence to tell her." Pinkie's words from the last night echoed in her head. "You, Twilight. Sunset has a pretty big crush on you. She'd do anything to make you happy." Twilight's breath hitched in her throat as she tried not to cry, and Sunset began to sing. Twilight sighed as she laid back into the grass, the soft sounds of the forest and the small stream bubbling away filling her ears. "How did you find this place, anyway?" Sunset chuckled. "A lot of searching. My last thinking spot got built on, so I needed somewhere new." "You have thinking spots? Why not just stay at home?" "I wasn't really comfortable at ''home'' before I found this spot." "Oh. Right." Silence. "Sunset, why..., why did you never tell anyone you were homeless?" "I didn't want anyone to think less of me again." "Again? Oh, right. Anon-A-" "Yeah." More silence, but Twilight could tell it wasn't awkward, just comfortable. "Sunset, can you promise me something?" "Sure, Twi. What's up?" She shifted onto her knees and grabbed Sunset's hands, and surprised teal eyes met her own. "If you ever need help with something again, no matter what, tell me." Twilight stared deep into those eyes as she spoke, finding herself fighting not to drift away into them forever, but she was saved by a slow blink from Sunset as she drew in a breath and let it out slowly. A slight nod. "Okay." "You're such an idiot!" "Hey! You forgot it too!" "I didn't think I needed to remind you we kept the present at your house!" The duo laughed as Sunset fumbled with the keys for her front door, sliding them in and unlocking it before pulling off her motorcycle helmet in one smooth tug. Twilight couldn't find her breath as she watched Sunset's hair fall out over her back, fire and sunshine caught in soft threads that blew lightly in the spring breeze. The girl was almost teasing her as she shook her head, sending cascading waves down her hair and giving Twilight a view of her neck, if only briefly. She was snapped out of her trance by speech, but she wasn't fully awake again yet. "If you wait here I'll go and grab it. Shouldn't be more than a minute." "Uh huh, okay." "Twilight? You alright?" She shook herself out of her daydream fully now. "Oh, yep! I'll, uh, let the girls know we'll be late." "Okay! Be right back." Sunset dissapeared through the doorway, headed to the back of her room, and Twilight could see some photos of the friends on the wall. But then, after a moment, she realised they were photos of them. Just her and Sunset. There were a couple with the others in, but mostly just her and Sunset. Did... Did Sunset like her? No, there's no way. She's probably not even gay. Sunset was to Twilight's right, eyes closed as she leaned back in her chair, guitar in hand. "I dunno, Rainbow. I think this might be better acoustic." Applejack spoke up in agreement from across the firepit, where she sat next to Rarity, who was on Sunset's right. It was a warm summer evening, and the first sleepover Sunset had hosted. It must have been about one AM by now, but it was still warm out even without the fire the girls had started. The sky was clear, and Twilight could happily sit and count the stars if it wasn't for the fact she had already. They were talking about the latest song Fluttershy had written, trying to decide the best way to go about it instrumentally. They were still trying to be relatively quiet for Celestia's sake, as Luna was still awake playing games. At least, according to Sunset. There were no lights on in her window, but Sunset was the one that lived with the sisters, so they couldn't exactly dispute her assessment. "I see what you mean, but it doesn't fit any of our voices in acoustic." "Maybe not one of ours..." Twilight sat up straight as Sunset looked at her. "No. No way." "Come on Twi! Your singing voice is amazing, it's like listening to an angel-" "No! I couldn't, I'd get too nervous, I'd ruin it, I-" "Twi. Twi, look at me." She felt hands on her own, and her eyes snapped to Sunset's. "You can do this. You are one of the bravest, most talented souls I have met, and you have a beautiful voice." Twilight felt a blush on her face, and was glad the fire was hiding it. "It's just like doing backup vocals, and me and the others will be singing with you anyway. You won't even notice." "I don't know..." "I'll be with you the entire time. I'll even sing the whole thing with you if you want." "...Can you?" "Of course, Twi." Sunset reached over and mussed Twilight's hair, upsetting her glasses and causing a giggle. Sunset's voice dropped to a tiny whisper, and Twilight wasn't entirely sure Sunset had intended for anyone to hear her. "I'd do anything for you." They were all a little bit drunk, and Twilight knew they shouldn't be, but Applejack was hosting, so not drinking was basically off the table. To fit the theme even further, they were all wearing varying degrees of southern attire, but between Sunset and Applejack, no one could get close to them in levels of accuracy. The girl in question was chatting with Rainbow while she had an arm around Rarity, the pair having finally got together at some point in the last few weeks, though she couldn't remember when exactly. Fluttershy was laughing with Pinkie Pie about something to do with Sugarcube Corner, and Sunset... Where was Sunset? She got her answer a moment later as she felt her arm get grabbed and tugged towards the door. "C'mon! I need to show you something." Twilight giggled slightly as she was pulled along. "You're strong tonight." Sunset laughed, although a slight blush appeared on her cheeks. "I think that's just the alcohol making you unsteady, Twilight." "Mmmm, nooo, it's youuuuuu~" Sunset laughed again and Twilight smiled. She loved Sunset's laugh. It was bright, it was bubbly. It made her day. "Your laugh is cuteeeee. Hey, how come you're not drunk like meeee?" "Because I can take a drink?" Twilight pouted. "Prove it." This lit a fire in Sunset's eyes, and the grip on her arm loosened as Sunset stalked back over to the drinks table. "Okay then, m'lady. What'll it be?" Twilight's challenge had been heard by the others, and they were now gathering to watch too. "Uhhhhh, four shots. Vodka. Straight." Sunset let out a low whistle and Rainbow and AJ shared looks. "Okay." In what seemed like a few moments, Sunset had poured out the first shot and slammed it back, reaching for the whiskey bottle again. By the third, most of them, bar Pinkie, were watching wide eyed as Sunset poured out the fourth shot without hesitation. Sunset raised the glass, smiled at Twilight, and drained it before slamming the glass back onto the table. "Now, can I show you what I wanted to?" Twilight nodded wordlessly. Sunset seemed fine. Four shots of Vodka, on top of whatever else she'd drank, and she was barely slurring her words and seemed confident in her balance. "Great. Come on!" Twilight wasn't sure what this feeling was, but it wasn't one she liked. She didn't know why she felt so bothered by Flash Sentry being sat so close to Sunset, but she was. It was a Thursday night, mid summer now, and Sunset had finished her set playing at the local bar about fifteen minutes earlier, and so was now sat in the corner booth with Twilight, Flash, Applejack, Rarity and Rainbow Dash. Fluttershy and Pinkie would have been there, but Fluttershy had gone out for a Family dinner while Pinkie had been called in to cover a shift. So while the side with Rainbow and Flash did have less people sat on it, she'd still felt a twinge of sadness when Sunset had sat next to Flash instead of her. But this new feeling that had emerged when Flash had scooted closer to Sunset? This was new, and she didn't like it. Sunset shot her a concerned look from across the table as she lifted her glass, asking non-verbally, "Are you alright?" Twilight appreciated the concern, but given that she couldn't figure out what she was feeling, she waved the Amber girl away with a nod and a smile. She felt a bitterness in her mouth as Flash reached an arm around Sunset and began messing with her hair, and felt it raise when Sunset smiled at the guy. She hadn't even been listening to the conversation, so she didn't know why Flash was doing this, but it still... upset her, was the best way she could describe it. "I'm going to go to the bathroom." Twilight stood after speaking, quickly making her way out of the booth and towards the bathroom, but at the last minute veering to the outside door when she'd gone around the corner. She needed the fresh air. Just to clear my head. She sighed as she stepped outside, and was immediately glad the parking lot was empty. The sky was darkening, and there were some clouds just visible gathering on the horizon, threatening rain for the next day. It was still warm out, though if she tried, Twilight possibly could have felt the first chill of autumn. She wasn't trying, though, instead content to enjoy the warm sunset air. She heard steps behind her, but didn't think anything of it until Rarity's voice sounded. "It's perfectly fine to be jealous, darling." "Wh- what? I'm no-" "Pfffff, Twilight, please. I could tell the moment Sunset sat next to Flash." "Huh? You- how-?" "Please, Twilight, I've known for months. You two are about the most obvio-" "I'm not jealous of Flash!" Rarity let out a sigh, halfway between amused and disappointed. "If you say so, dear. Now come on, Flash went for another drink. If you hurry, you can steal the seat next to Sunset." "I'm not-" "Twilight, please. The amusement wears out very quickly." Twilight huffed but said nothing, knowing full when that Rarity was right. She was jealous, so very jealous of how close Flash and Sunset had been sat. How she'd smiled. She would've given anything for it to be her she'd been smiling at. It wasn't often that Twilight enjoyed total and complete silence, but laying on a hill with Sunset, staring at the stars? That was good. She enjoyed that. Late Summer meant the beginnings of a chill in the air that was undeniable now, and so Twilight had a jacket on, but Sunset was still in just a t-shirt, though her leather jacket was tied around her waist. Twilight felt her attention slip from the sky to Sunset, and the month or so since the... 'incident' with Flash and Sunset at the bar had left Twilight well and truly stuck in the self admittance that she had a crush on Sunset. She was crushing bad. Twilight had never really felt like this before about someone, and even Timber was more, well, mellow. It hadn't taken that long after Camp Everfree to call it quits, but Twilight would've married Sunset in an instant. Sunset had her hair up in a ponytail, a style she only used when she went running, but she always looked breathtaking when she did. Twilight had called her during a late-night run asking to meet up, so the girl had jogged to the hill and apologised, but Twilight couldn't care less. She had on a tight sports crop-top and running shorts, but had her leather jacket tied around her waist in case she got cold walking home. Twilight didn't dare look at her legs, because she was half sure she'd faint. So instead, she looked back into the sky, letting out a contented sigh. Fire spread through her hand as Sunset grasped it gently, and gave her a smile. There were a lot of things Twilight knew about the world, for example that perfection was a moment that could never truly come. But that moment? On the hill, just her with the girl of her dreams lying next to her, stargazing? Twilight thought that this was pretty close. Video Sunset stopped, smiling sadly as she wiped a tear from her eye. 'Thanks for watching.' Twilight cried. Author's Note Important: In case you didnt see it in the long description, this chapter was written around lyrics which had to be removed to meet FIMfictions requirements. For the full effect, go read this on the Archive itself. Use the link in the long description to get to my account. [Note copied from archive] So correct me if I'm wrong but this one chapter basically DOUBLED Dying Rays so far??? Like, huh??? I mean, I enjoyed writing but don't expect most chapters to be this length. I think it mostly just came from the focus on Twilight and Sunset throughout this fic. So this is where you all get to laugh at me because all subsequent chapters are 3000+ words... As well as that, I will need to update the tags over the next few days, but I still kind of suck at tagging so if you have suggestions do let me know. I'm also lazy and it will take a while. ANYWAY PEOPLE. IMPORTANT NOTE: DYING RAYS IS PART OF A SERIES. This being my main world I write in, Dying Rays is part of the Where The Sun Goes series. Currently, it has two prequels and they're pretty important in establishing character backstories and motives, like, for fucks sake, Broken Promises (Current part 1 (As of Dec. 21st 2024)) talks about Sunset's backstory and motive in this world. Pretty fucking important. SO YEAH, GO READ THE PREQUELS. Oh, uh, final thing, the formatting between chapters will probably change quite a bit. Sorry not sorry, but until I can settle on what I like the most there'll be experimentation. Anyway now I'm done angrily shouting at you, (AO3 Author shouts at clouds!) I hope you enjoyed reading and please go check out some of my other works if you feel like it or have time. Just before this chapter, I posted 'The Bar and the Bands, Side A', which is currently a standalone but that might change. Anyway, I love you all, don't stay up forever, get some sleep, and GOODNIGHT <3 FiveWhat happens if you take an extremely smart girl and put her through intense trauma? What happens if you take her sister away and then exploit and corrupt her and force her apart from her family? What happens if you put her through a forced reformation while her own fate hangs over her? What happens, when after she's put in that effort, you fail to believe her and throw her away? What happens when you find out she's homeless? The spiral that was Rainbow Dash's head refused to slow. What happens when she gets a home, and then almost immediately the ones who took her in accuse her of being evil again? What happens when you're too busy arguing with your friends to notice? What happens when she's the one that has to save everyone anyway? What happens when people still bully her despite her saving everyone? The ball thunked against the ceiling, dropping back into Rainbow Dash's outstretched hand, before being thrown back up again. What happens if she starts to develop separation anxiety as a result of it all? What happens if you find out she overworks herself so she can sleep? What happens if you suspect she hurts herself, but uses what limited magic she has to hide it? What happens if someone accidentally threatens her friends and her only way home for science? What happens if someone then accidentally uses stolen magic to become the same thing she did, the same thing she hates? What happens if she's the only one who can stop it? Deep breaths only helped so much when Rainbow got like this. Though, to be fair, she wasn't often in the wrong to such a severe extent. What happens, when after all that, you go to a camp? What happens when once more, she has to face the thing she became? The thing she tries to forget? What happens when you get separated? What happens, when that all finishes, if one of you hosts a sleepover to celebrate? What happens when you get drunk? What happens when you ask a dumb fucking question about her past? What happens if she has a panic attack? What happens if she passes out? What happens if she wakes up, still scared, still self-destructive, and tries to go home? What happens if she crashes badly? What happens if she goes into a coma? How do you apologise? How do you make it right? How do you know she'll ever wake up again? How could you live with the guilt? How could you forgive yours- Rainbow was cut free from her endless torrent of thoughts and questions, ifs and whens that cycled, that taunted, that told of Sunset's life, that reminded how she could be the spark that ended it? She let out a soft groan as she caught the ball again, raising herself onto her arms before sitting up fully against the wall and collecting her phone from the bedside table. She sat for a moment, eyes darting around the room. The normally bright blue walls with cloud patterns on felt dull. The trophy cabinets, filled with medals and sparkling trophies that came from her own talent felt undeserved, felt empty. The pictures on the walls, of her friends, her teammates, her family, all frowned at her even as they smiled. The clothes piles near her bed stared back at her, and she wished that the bed she sat on would simply swallow her whole. There was another, softer thunk, and Rainbow dragged her eyes from the clothes to her pet tortoise, Tank, who slowly lowered his leg from where he'd knocked on the glass. She felt herself soften slightly before quickly crawling across to the end of her bed and collecting the tortoise from his enclosure. "Thanks, Tank. You're right, I can't stop blaming myself for this. How am I supposed to? It was my fault." The tortoise tilted his head. "Well, yeah, of course it was because I was drunk. I would never ask something like that while sober." Rainbow set Tank onto the bed, and he turned and rested a foot onto Rainbow's leg so he could climb her. "Just being drunk isn't an excuse though. I still caused her panic attack." Tank stared straight at Rainbow, and she shifted uncomfortably under the scrutiny. "But I'm the avatar of loyalty, Tank! I'm supposed to be better!" Another head tilt. Rainbow sighed, but before she could respond to the tortoise her phone buzzed again, and she let out a slight groan as she was forced to lean back and dig under the covers for the previously forgotten device. After locating it, she turned it on as she used her free hand to tug at the blue rubber case, which had a rainbow lightning bolt descending across the back from a cloud, that Sunset Shimmer had made for her. That Sunset had made for her. Why did Sunset make anything for her? She didn't deserve it. She was a horrible friend. Poke. Rainbow cast her eyes down once more to where Tank shook his head. For a moment she did nothing, but then she giggled softly and picked the tortoise up once more, giving him a hug, phone re-forgotten. "You're right. I'm just being extra now." The phone buzzed again, and Rainbow's eyes widened before she carefully set down her pet and picked the phone back up, once more subconsciously tugging at the case. [14:27] [2 Missed Calls] [18 Messages] Rainbow let out a sheepish chuckle and an oops as she glanced at Tank, opening her messages app to see what her friends wanted, the notification telling her the most recent messages were from Pinkie Pie. [Pinned - Flutters - 11 Messages] [Pinks - 3 Messages] [AJ - 2 Messages] [Rarity - 1 Message] [SciTwi - 1 Message] She swallowed, starting with Twilight and working her way up, sending affirmations and reassurances that she was fine, she was okay. Was she really? Rainbow didn't know. Then, she got to Fluttershy. The first few were similar to the others', just a simple, but more delicately worded, are you alright, and it wasn't your fault. Then Fluttershy's more intimate knowledge of Rainbow started to show. [13:47] F: Did you remember to take your meds? [13:47] F: Have you gone on a run yet? [13:48] F: It might make you feel better. She was right, of course, it would've helped Rainbow feel a bit better, and Rainbow had wanted to go for one. But, side effect of forgetting her meds, she was instead locked to her bed, unable to work up the motivation to move. Or take her meds. [14:01] F: Have you tried playing with Tank? [14:02] F: Might be easier than going out for a run if you haven't had your meds. Once more, Fluttershy was right. How the girl did it, Rainbow didn't really know, but talking to Tank had helped her clear her head. [14:12] F: Finished at Sunset's. Can I come over? [14:13 - Missed call, tap to call back.] [14:14] F: Rainbow? [14:18 - Missed call, tap to call back.] [14:20] F: I'm coming over. [14:20] F: I'll be there in 10 minutes! Rainbow sat for a moment, not quite processing. She looked at the time again. 2:28. Fluttershy said 10 minutes. At 2:20. Which meant- "Shit!" Rainbow leaped off of her bed, quickly corralling her clothes and yanking her geode from the bedside table. She slipped it around her neck and took a breath before clutching onto it, ready for the burst, and Nothing. Nothing? Rainbow blinked for a moment. Clutched the geode once more. Nothing. Room quickly forgotten, Rainbow dashed over to her bed, grabbing her phone and quickly navigating to the group chat. [14:29] RD: Anyone else having geode issues? She sat, tapping at the turned off phone screen in anticipation for a response. There was a knock at the front door, and Rainbow jumped for a moment before remembering Fluttershy's impending arrival. This time, Rainbow grabbed the pile and quickly shoved it into the closest closet, picking out her favourite pair of black yoga pants with the rainbow lightning design down the outside legs and her blue jacket in exchange. Rainbow pulled the jacket on over her pajama top, which today was simply her shirt from Camp Everfree, and quickly slid out of the bottoms, into a pair of underwear that she was fairly certain hadn't been worn yet that week, and into her yoga pants, finally coming to a rest in the middle of her now somewhat, but clearly hastily, cleaned room. She let out a breath she didn't know she'd been holding and started for the door, only to open to Fluttershy herself, who looked up with a squeak as she held her hand out in a fist as though she'd been about to knock. "Oh, uhm, sorry, I knew your parents were out and you weren't responding, so I used my spare key-" She bit her lip, and Rainbow had to stop herself from pulling Fluttershy straight into a tight hug. "I hope that's okay." She failed, and flung her arms around the shy girl, her best friend, her girlfriend. Fluttershy let out another surprised squeak, causing Rainbow to hug tighter, and then she felt Fluttershy's arms slip around her waist and her head bury into her shoulder. It calmed Rainbow's overactive mind, simply because it felt right. She shivered lightly and sighed, a happy, comfortable sigh, because this was what home felt like. "Rainbow? You're crying-" She lifted a hand to her eyes, surprised to find them coming away wet. "No- I- uh..." "Rainbow..." "It's- I'm fine." Fluttershy sighed and pushed Rainbow back into her room before entering and closing the door behind them. She then walked over to Rainbow's bed, sat down and held her arms out. "Come on. Come here." "I don't-" "Rainbow. Snuggles. Now." "Jees, okay. When did you get so assertive?" Fluttershy giggled, a smile on her face. "When you started pretending to be fine." I guess I walked into that one. Rainbow made her way over to the bed, lying down so that her head rested on Fluttershy's shoulder and their bodies leaned against each other. Tank rested his head on Rainbow's leg. "You don't have to pretend, Dashie. Not with me. Not with the others either, but especially not me." "But it's my fault -" "You asked the question, yes." Rainbow flinched. "But that doesn't make it your fault, Dashie. I should've stopped you from drinking long before that." "Well, maybe, but-" "Applejack shouldn't have challenged you to a drinking challenge either." "I guess-" "Sunset shouldn't have joined you, Rarity should've given Sunset her smokes, Pinkie should have given you something lighter, do you want me to continue onto Twilight and Sunset?" Rainbow sighed and relaxed further into Fluttershy, resting her head in the taller girl's lap. "No, I got it." "Good." Fluttershy leaned down and placed a soft kiss on Rainbow's forehead. It was light, it was fast, but it was enough to send a jolt of electricity running through her, and she couldn't stop the smile from forming on her face. "How long can you stay?" "As long as you want me to. I don't have anything until my shift at the shelter tomorrow." Rainbow looked up hopefully. "Does that means you can stay the night?" She was answered by a smile and a nod, and so Rainbow released a sigh of contentment. "So, what do you want to do?" "For now, at least? Nothing." "Yeah. I can do that." Fluttershy smiled at Rainbow again, and began running a hand through her prismatic hair. Rainbow melted at the contact, and as she relaxed she felt her eyes began to droop from the sleep she'd lost worrying about Sunset. "You can go to sleep, Rainbow." "I don't want you to have nothing to do." "I have plenty to do, don't worry. Go to sleep." A sigh. "Okay, just wake me up before too long." "I will, Dashie." Windy Whistles, Rainbow's mother, would later find the duo asleep together when she went to find Rainbow for dinner. Author's Note [Note copied from Archive] so a bit of a shorter chapter again (I've decided I want to try for 3K roughly per chapter from here on really) but I got to the point where I'd reached a conclusion for what I wanted to get across, so there was just no point in adding anything else. A couple more chapters of the characters coping, and then we can get into the real meat of the story. Bare with me! I promise (hope) it'll be worth it! UPDATE: I HAVE MADE A TERRIBLE MISTAKE WHY WHY DID I PLAN STUFF THIS SUCKS so anyway I started planning how I want this to go and now I'm gonna have to rewrite the first couple of chapters *sigh* I am depressed lmfao anyway, I'm not going to start a new fic for it. I will just update the chapters in here, and make a new fic for the old chapters so you can still read them if you want! So uh, new chapters might take a bit as I'm gonna focus on rewrites first lol. Love you all, goodnight, don't forget to sleep! <3
OneSunset Shimmer, in every sense of the word, was exhausted. Tops 20."
TwoSunset was still stressed, but she'd been having fun. I really need to sort out a plan for this lmao, but really right now it's just what I want when i want (recipe for disaster, prepare for me to simply implode)
ThreeApplejack didn't want to wake the others. LOVE YOU ALL MAKE SURE YOU SLEEP AND HYDRATE <3
FourPrincipal Celestia, Sunset's adopted mother, had already been there when the girls had got to Sunset's hospital room, and they had all stayed in near complete silence as Sunset slept in front if them. Anyway, I love you all, don't stay up forever, get some sleep, and GOODNIGHT <3
FiveWhat happens if you take an extremely smart girl and put her through intense trauma? <3
