(n.) the act of loving the one who loves you; a love returned in full
This isn't really going to be indicative of my future-planned darker work, just something I'm using to get my hooves on the ground with this whole Writing Fan Fiction thing, and as a way to generally get myself back into writing. Uh, while I love me some action/adventure and horror stories, I will (hesitantly) admit that LyraBon fluff is my life source and I had fun writing this cheesy little one-shot. *cough* Criticism is welcomed and appreciated. Hope you enjoy! :)
Short and Sweet
Bon Bon awoke to the Sun sparkling through the curtained window and an ethereal melody cushioning her ears.
With a light, groggy sigh, she turned to her side. The space next to her was empty. Her beloved, Lyra, sat perched, almost like a dove, on the alcove across the room. The unicorn was softly strumming her lyre, and it was one of Bon Bon's favorite sounds. It was the epitome of relaxation, safety, and love.
"Happy Hearts and Hooves Day," Lyra said with a gentle smile. "I made you breakfast."
As the fog from sleep cleared, Bon Bon looked down at the heart-shaped pancakes and glass of orange juice. "These look wonderful," she said. "Just like the mare who made them for me."
Lyra blushed and continued to play her instrument.
"I know you have to go into town today," Bon Bon said as she ate, "But your gift had to stay in the fridge to set and I want to give it to you before you leave."
A large grin immediately spread across Lyra's face. "I saw it when I went in there to get stuff for the pancakes." When Bon Bon's expression dropped, Lyra clarified, "But I promise I didn't look under the tinfoil! Not even a little peek!"
Relieved, Bon Bon finished her breakfast and wiped her muzzle. An excited, yet nervous feeling erupted in her chest. "I really hope you like it, I've never made it before. Well, not like this."
Lyra's smile grew even wider. "I'm sure it'll be great!"
When Bon Bon got the gift from the fridge, she knew she didn't just want to give Lyra the covered platter - that wouldn't be romantic enough, after all. So, she carefully arranged it on a more flattering dish and made her way back to their shared bedroom.
Suddenly, she paused, and an almost unfamiliar surge of doubt overtook her. Bon Bon returned the platter to the counter. She slid open the back door and stepped shakily into the field of daisies that grew behind the house.
Her nerves were too much for her, clawing at her stomach. The only thing she could think to do was stop, and focus on something else.
The weather, courtesy of the pegasi, was lovely. She laid back on the grass, prickly yet soft, and let the breeze run through her multi-colored mane and let the Sun warm her creme fur, as she took in the beautiful vastness of the bright blue sky. Birds in the trees chirped a cheerful little tune. Bon Bon was engulfed in a world of color, blanketed in serenity.
After everything she and Lyra had been through to get to moments like this - the quiet, peaceful, tender moments - this was nothing.
But maybe that's exactly what the problem was.
Minutes passed. She breathed in through her nose and out through her mouth. Her muscles unclenched one by one, and only then did she get up. Bon Bon trotted back inside, brushing blades of grass from her coat as she went. She was unsure, but calm enough to push forward.
Still, though.
"I...It's stupid. I'll make you something better before you come back." She was right outside the bedroom door, and the plate chittered in rhythm with her quivering hoof.
She heard Lyra move from the loveseat. "Bon Bon, it isn't stupid. I love everything you make for me, and I know you. I know you put your heart into it."
"It's just..." Different, she wanted to say, because this was their first Hearts and Hooves Day together as a married couple, not just as marefriends, and it meant more to Bon Bon than anything in Equestria.
Candy didn't feel like enough, even if making it was the foundation of Bon Bon's entire being, right to her core.
There was her core, and then there was Lyra.
She sighed. "I made these to show you how much you mean to me, but I feel the need to, y'know, say it." She stepped into the bedroom. "You mean the world to me - more than that - and nothing less, and I feel like I'll never be able to...express it as much as I want to, but I can try."
Lyra's eyes began to water, and she wiped them quickly. "Bonnie, I get that it's the day of love and everything, but you didn't have to get that sappy."
Bon Bon's laugh was as delicate as bells, and she held out the platter. "Anyway...here it is. Happy Hearts and Hooves Day."
Lyra's gaze swept over the candies. They were, rather appropriately, heart-shaped. The base was clearly chocolate, but they were colored the same as the swirls of Bon Bon's dark pink and blue mane and tail. Lyra picked up one of the treats and took a bite, reveling in the sharp sweetness of mint fudge filling that coated her mouth. The insides were soft green and white, with subtle flecks of golden sweetness, much like her.
"I don't know what you were so worried about," Lyra giggled while reaching for another. "These are amazing."
"I wasn't really worried about the taste," Bon Bon said. "Making candy is what I do, but you're who completes me..." she faltered. "I wanted to tell you that, and it kinda went full circle, back to candy."
"I didn't wanna call the color choices something they weren't even if I knew that's what you were going for." Lyra briefly laughed again before her expression softened, dreamily. "It's not stupid, it's perfect. Like you, you cornball. I never doubt how much you love me."
If being with her wife was the best feeling in the world, then the feeling of all the edge leaving her was certainly a close second. Feeling both at the same time brought a sense of euphoria over Bon Bon, and it gave her heart wings.
They crawled back into bed. Bon Bon nuzzled her face into Lyra's neck, and Lyra wrapped a hoof around her. "Y'know, I don't have to go out now. I'd like to stay right here."
Bon Bon kissed Lyra on the cheek. "I wouldn't want to be anywhere else."
