The sound of a garage door opening can be heard, the rollers creaking and the ceiling-mounted operator struggling and skipping as it pulls the single-car garage door open. As the door stops in its open position I step into the dark garage before flicking the lights on, in the middle of the garage is my current project/hobby, a Kawasaki KLR650 adventure bike. It's sitting on a repair stand at the moment, I dropped it on its left side while riding through the city, I had been going through an intersection when I lost traction on a patch of gravel and laid it down on its left side. As a result, the left side fairing shattered, and the transmission cover got scrapped up pretty badly; the transmission cover I don't mind much but I did replace the fairing.
I currently have the fairing hanging from the ceiling at chest level near the back of the small garage, the new fairing I had ordered wasn't painted so I had to put a fresh coat of green paint on followed by a layer of clear coat. I run my finger over the fairing to make sure it's dry, I nod in confirmation as I unhook it from the ceiling and check for imperfections before moving it over to the bike and checking for both fit and looks. I set the fairing on my seat before walking to my toolbox and grabbing an 8mm socket with a 3/8 handled driver, walking back to the bike I use my foot to push my rolling chair to the left side of the bike. I sit down and start to reattach the fairing, only a handful of screws, and the fairing is secure. I the ground next to me is the radiator guard, I grab it and secure it to the new fairing and frame of the bike.
"I need to invest in crash bars," I say, wiping the sweat off my forehead with my forearm.
Once secure I stand and push my rolling chair across the garage before checking the new fairing for fitment, I bought it second-hand for eBay, Kawasaki wanted an arm and a leg for this fairing. Satisfied with the look and fitment, I open the kickstand and move the rear of the bike before easing it off its stand. It leans to the left and eases onto its kickstand, I pull the key out of my pocket and turn the ignition to the on position before pulling the the clutch and starting the bike. It idles high as it's trying to get the oil up to operating temperature, letting it idle I go back inside my house and grab my riding gear. I have plans to go camping with some friends today, it'll be a short ride through the city before getting into the mountains and eventually off-road on some trails.
As I'm putting my jacket on my phone starts ringing, I pick it up and see it's my friend Brent, I answer and say, "What's up man?"
"Yo, Brian, you on your way yet?" he asks.
"Yeah, just got that fairing on the bike, about to head out now,"
"Tight bro, listen, we found a shortcut to the campsite; instead of going right at the fork, go left. It'll take you through a cave but it's way faster,"
"Through a cave?" I ask, confused.
"Yeah dude, it's like way faster, and the cave looks sick bro,"
"Alright, left at the fork, got it, I'll see you when I get there," I say before hanging up.
I set my phone on my bedside table before changing into riding attire; steel-toe brown boots, blue jeans with knee pads over them, a brown leather riding jacket, and black riding gloves. I look at myself in the mirror and make sure my hair looks decent; I'm clean-shaven aside from a thick mustache, brown hair, and hazel eyes. I am 5' 10" and in half-decent shape, I could lose a couple of pounds put feel comfortable with the way I look.
I head back to the garage helmet in hand; my helmet is the Icon Airform Chantilly in white. I close and lock my back door before walking into the garage, the bike is now idling at a lower rate as the engine oil is now up to temperature. On top of my toolbox is my backpack ready for the weekend, next to it is a long green tube with a strap. On the tube is black writing that reads 'OFM JIC M500CRUISER', opening the tube I pull out the firearm inside, a Mossberg 590 Cruiser. It's a compact shotgun that I got specifically for camping, the tube it comes in is water-resistant and very durable. I slide the pump of the shotgun back to check if the chamber is clear, once I confirm that it is I slide it forward and set it on my toolbox. Inside the tube I also have a box of 12 gauge slugs and a small survival kit, I pull out the slugs and open the box before loading five slugs into the tube of the shotgun, I put the box of slugs back into the tube and make sure the safety of the shotgun is on before also returning it to the tube.
Closing the tube I put my helmet on before I grab my backpack and walk over to the bike, turning the lights off. I open the right saddlebag and put my backpack inside, I try to slide the green tube in with it but it's too tall, I sigh and close the saddle bag before walking to the left saddle bag and depositing the green tube inside, I pull the garage door remote out of my pocket and close the garage door. It again creeks and whines as the door comes down and sits on the ground, I throw my leg over the bike before kicking it into gear and taking off.
After leaving my street and making a few turns I'm already on the freeway, it's after 4 pm so there is light traffic but it will start to pick up soon as rush hour starts. I look to the mountains to see it's cloudy and rainy, my favorite type of weather. I weave around the cars I pass, the bike feeling smooth like I'm riding on glass. As the freeway gets closer to the mountains, it goes from five lanes down to three lanes, it also goes from being straight and flat to curvy. I've ridden up here many times in the past, I usually stick to the center lane to avoid the slow people in the right lane and the speeders in the left lane. The further I get into the mountains, the wetter the roads get, nothing I haven't ridden in before but I remain cautious. I reach the exit only a few miles later and leave the freeway before stopping at a traffic light, as I shift into neutral the sky starts to drizzle a soft rain. I put my left turn signal on before letting my feet touch the ground, I stretch my neck and back, popping bones throughout, and I lean the back left and right with my legs giving them a stretch as well.
Even though this bike weighs nearly 500 pounds it feels super light and comfy, as I sit at the light I inhale the cool air through my nose before exhaling through my mouth with a satisfied sigh. The smell of the mountains and wilderness is amazing, the smell of the wet trees and dirt mixed with the smell of the rain is like heaven. Most people hate how long this light takes but I could sit here for hours taking in the smell and feel of the area. The light finally turns green and I kick the bike into gear before turning left and riding down the frontage road.
After finding the trail I need to turn down I pull off the side and stop the bike, I shift into neutral and change the bike's ride mode from street to sport. Nodding in satisfaction I kick it into gear and put the hammer down before dumping the clutch, my rear wheel kicks up a bunch of dirt in mud as I am thrust into the forest trail. I ride in more of a standing position and let the bike take the bumps under me, a grin is on my face as I weave around the rougher bits and the softer mud. As I go further into the forest the rain starts to die off again and the dirt starts to get drier. I soon approach the fork in the road and I go left like Brent mentioned to me earlier. The bike roars as I tear through the forest smile still on my face as I enjoy the ride so far.
As I round a corner I can see the aforementioned cave coming up, I sigh as I slow down and turn on my headlight, this place looks a bit creepy. I come to a stop at the cave entrance and survey the area, nothing out of the ordinary. I get off the bike and open my top case, inside is a holster with my handgun and magazine inside. I clip the holster onto my belt and draw my handgun, a Rock Island 1911 chambered in 45 acp, I chamber a round and put it back in my holster before mounting my bike once more. I can feel my anxiety creep up but I ignore it and start riding into the cave, the mouth of the cave is about 20 feet tall and 30 feet wide but as I get further in it gets as small as 10 feet tall by 12 feet wide, as I get comfortable I pick up the pace. Soon my eyes adjust to the dark I realize this is just a cave and nothing more, confident I pick up the pace more and begin smiling again.
As I fly through the cave I weave left and right, avoiding rocks and trying to keep the bike straight as the cave banks left and right, as I round a corner into a larger room-like area, I make eye contact with a large puddle and gasp before panic braking my rear brake, I'm unsuccessful in stopping and my front wheel hydroplanes before the bike slips out from under me. I hit the ground hard and end up on my back, I curse to myself as I stand up and try to survey the damage. I walk over to the bike and turn it off before picking it up to see that it is surprisingly unharmed, I breathe a sigh of relief as I open the kickstand and let it rest.
"I need to be more careful," I say to myself as I pull my helmet off and set it on my seat. I inspect myself to see if I'm injured and just like the bike I am also unharmed, I'll probably be sore in the morning but happy to be alive. As I regain my bearings I glance at the trail ahead and realize that the cave has a fork in it. Confused I check to make sure I'm looking the right way and can confirm my tracks come from the single entrance. I sigh and grab my phone out of my pocket and try to call Brent, I have one bar of service, shaking my head I give Brent a call anyway. It rings a couple of times before he picks up.
"Yo, you on your way?" he asks
"Yeah, I'm in the cave but there is a fork in the cave, which way do I go?" I ask
"What? Yo- *static* I can't hear- *static"
"You're breaking up, what?" I ask
"I ca- *static* service isn- *static*"
The call ends and my phone says there is no service, I sigh and walk around the cave with my phone in the air trying to get somewhat of a signal to no avail. I close my eyes in frustration before shoving my phone into my pocket. I look at the ground near the fork in the trails to try and see which way the tracks go but there aren't any, I kick the ground in frustration and lean against my bike unsure of what to do. I close my eyes again and try to think of the relative position of the old trail to where I am now.
"If anything I can just come back and try the other way if I'm wrong, guess it doesn't matter which way I go," I shrug my shoulders before putting my helmet back on and starting the bike. The trail that went right eventually wraps around to the left of the small mountain this cave is a part of, so if I go right I should be fine. I nod as I kick my bike into gear and go down the right opening. I continue at a fair pace, making sure to avoid puddles and rocks as I have been. I again start to get more comfortable and pick up the pace, the roar of the bike increasing my adrenaline.
I round another corner and I can finally see the exit, "Thank god," I say to myself as I slow down. Exiting the cave I notice it's brighter outside than it was when I entered, clouds must have cleared up, how long was I in there? I shrug my shoulders as I continue, the forest looks unfamiliar but I've never been this way before so I'm not sure what to expect. I can see an opening in the trees ahead, I also notice that the trail ends at the tree line, this must be where we're camping. I slow down as I get to the tree line, I eventually slow to a stop and look around to see . . . no one.
"The fuck?" I question as I pull my helmet off and look around more, not a tent or person in sight, did I go the wrong way? I sigh in frustration as I once again get off my bike and get my phone out, as I slide the lock screen open I see I have no service whatsoever, not even an SOS signal, nothing. I scratch my head in confusion as I look around more.
"No signal, no camp, what the fuck is going on?" I say aloud before I hear a growling from my left near the tree line, I whip my head around and all I can see are a pair of green glowing eyes, holy shit is that a wolf? I can taste fear on the back of my tongue, my hand goes to my hip to grab my gun only to feel an empty holster. Shit, my sidearm must have fallen out when I slipped off the bike back into the cave. My eyes shoot to my left-side saddlebag, I'm only a couple steps away, if I move slowly I can get my shotgun, I look back to the wolf to see now there are a few sets of eyes looking at me.
Without breaking eye contact I take a step closer to my bike, they growl even louder as I take another step closer before reaching down and opening the saddle bag. This causes them to step out of the tree line, they're large and brown and - made of wood? I swallow in fear as I glance down at the green tube in my saddle bag, I just need to twist that cap off and I'll have the upper hand. I slowly reach my hand in and twist off the cap, this causes the wolves to start walking toward me at a faster rate.
I pull the cap off and quickly grab the 12 gauge by its pistol grip before aiming at the wolves. This causes the wolves to charge at me, I rack the shotgun only for the pump to get jammed and will not go forward. I look in the chamber to see the shell I tried to load had jammed itself in the mechanism, looking up I see the lead wolf is now jumping at me with its mouth open ready for the kill. I gasp as I hold the shotgun sideways using it the guard me, the wolf bites onto the gun and pushes me to the ground. I am face-to-face with the wolf now, his teeth inches from my face, I manage to eject the jammed shell and rack a fresh one in the chamber.
BANG
I pull the trigger and the kick from the shotgun breaks most of the wooden teeth in the wolf's mouth, causing it to back off and fall to the ground. I get to my feet and rack another shell before aiming at the wolf to my left who is now charging me. I brace myself and send a slug right into its head, the wolf crumbles to the ground turning into a pill of wood. The wolf to the right was faster, it latched its teeth onto my shoulder, sinking its teeth deep into my shoulder. I scream in pain as I use my left hand to rack the shotgun once more before shooting the wolf in the stomach, he yelps in pain and lets me go before retreating to the forest. I fall to the ground as my shoulder starts to bleed, the last wolf is trying to get back up but is struggling, I sigh in pain and pull myself onto one knee. The wolf looks at me with pain in its now fading green eyes, I use my shotgun as a brace to pull myself up, and I limp over to the downed wolf before racking the last shell into the chamber.
Standing over the wolf I put the barrel to the wolf's head before pulling the trigger, putting it out of its misery. The sound echoes through the valley as the wolf falls dead, becoming a pile of wood like the other one I'd killed. I limp back over to the bike and drop the gun in the open saddle bag before opening my right-side saddle bag and attempting to get my backpack out. I fumble with the latch as my vision starts to blur. I look at my right shoulder and see that I've lost a lot of blood, I get my back out and sit on the ground leaning against my bike before opening my backpack.
"Come on, where is my med kit," I say desperate to get this wound under control. I manage to get my med kit out and open before I press some gauze into my shoulder, as hard as I try though I can feel myself getting weak, my vision starts to blur further and I drop the gauze to my lap before looking up at the sky. To my right I can hear a wooden cart approaching, I glance over and can see a large purple wooden cart stopped on the path.
"Oh my godness, Trixie! Come out here and help me!" I can hear a female voice say before I pass out.
Brian POV
I'm awakened with a jolt as the hammock I'm lying in swings against the wall to my left. My vision is blurry but I can tell I'm inside a wooden cart, I can hear the wooden wheels rolling against the ground and feel the cart jolt with the occasional bump. I try sitting up but I can feel the pain in my right shoulder again; grunting in pain I lay down and turn my head to see my shoulder is bandaged up and has stopped bleeding. As my eyes adjust to the dark I look around the interior of the cart I can see it's nearly full with various boxes, crates, and my bike. It's leaning to the right against a dresser with multiple colors of bungee cord holding it in place, the left side saddle bag is still open with my shotgun sticking out. Draped over the seat of my bike I can see my leather jacket with a large bite mark on the right shoulder, I shudder as I remember the fight I'd had with the wolves.
The sound of the wooden wheels on the ground gets louder and shakes the cart more, it sounds like we're on a stone path now. We slow down and I can hear various voices from outside the cart; are we going through a town? We finally come to a stop and I can listen to more voices from outside, the doors behind me open letting light in and nearly blinding me. I can hear trotting from behind, I turn my head to see a mulberry-colored unicorn with a worried expression looking down at me.
"My name is Princess Twilight Sparkle, are you okay?" she asks
Confused I say, "I'm not sure, my shoulder hurts and I feel weak,"
Twilight nods before I can feel myself being lifted off the hammock, I look down to see myself being lifted by a purple aura, I look up and see that Twilight's horn has the same colored aura around it. She's levitating me, what the hell is going on? I look around to see a crowd of ponies formed around the cart, most of whom have shocked and worried expressions. I look to my right and see that we're in front of a hospital. I'm lowered onto a stretcher outside the cart and a couple of doctor-looking ponies bring me into the hospital. As we move through the halls of the hospital my vision starts to blur and I can feel myself getting weaker again. My head rests to the right and I can see that I'm bleeding through my bandages. I can hear the doctors talking to each other in worry but can't make out the words they're saying, my vision goes black and I pass out again.
Starlight POV
As the hospital doors close, I look down at my blood-soaked hooves, wincing at the thought of that poor creature's wounds. I trot into the waiting room and take a seat, trying to control my racing thoughts. I look up and notice Twilight and Fluttershy entering the room, while Rainbow Dash is trying to keep the door shut from the small crowd that is also trying to enter the hospital.
"Uggh! I need a little help here!" Rainbow Dash says, struggling to hold the door shut. Twilight nods before casting a spell, and the door is now covered in a light purple magical barrier, keeping it closed.
"Thanks," Rainbow Dash says with a sigh of relief before resting on one of the chairs, I look at Twilight who is looking at me with a hint of concern.
"What happened out there Starlight?" Twilight asks.
"Trixie and I were camping out near the Everfree forest last night near Dodge City, we weren't going to head back to town until this afternoon but we heard some loud bangs like cannons in the distance. We packed up camp quickly and went to investigate the sounds when we came across that, creature. He had been attacked by timberwolves,"
Twilight, Fluttershy, and Rainbow Dash gasp in shock, "T-Timberwolves?" Fluttershy stutters.
"I need to let the doctors know to give him an antidote for the Timberwolf poison," Twilight says before trotting quickly down the hall into the hospital.
"Were you or Trixie hurt by any of them?" Rainbow Dash asks.
I shake my head, "N-no, he'd killed both of them with this, small canon thing he had with him," Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash gasp at this, "Trixie and I tried to patch him up the best we could but he'd already lost so much blood when we found him." I sigh and glance at the floor, "I just hope he's ok,"
Fluttershy rubs my back with a hoof before saying, "The doctors are gonna do their best, I'm sure he'll pull through,"
Rainbow Dash nods, "He seems like a strong creature, I'm sure he'll be ok,"
I smile and look at Fluttershy, "Thank you two, I appreciate the support,"
Twilight trots back into the waiting room with the same concerned look. "He's in really bad shape. They gave him the antidote for the timberwolf poison and were able to stop the bleeding, but he's lost a lot of blood and might need a blood donor. I've already given the doctors a sample of my blood to see if I'm a match. Did you three want to give a sample as well?"
We look at each other before I ask, "Would our blood even be a match for whatever he is?"
"We aren't sure yet," Twilight says trotting closer, "But more than one sample couldn't hurt to find out,"
I look to Fluttershy and Rainbow, "I'm in if you two are,"
"I'm in," Rainbow says.
"Me too," Fluttershy adds.
Twilight smiles before leading us down the hall, I nervously follow my friends around the corner and down the hall, anxiety, and nervousness washing over me. As we trot down the hall nurse Redheart approaches me and asks, "As you ok Starlight? Your forehooves are covered in blood,"
I nod, "I'm ok nurse, there was a lot of blood from that creature's injuries, we t-tried to stop the bleeding but,"
Redheart stops me before saying, "It's ok, you did what you could, I understand seeing that amount of blood can be startling. Why don't we get you cleaned up, follow me,"
I look to my friends who stopped, Twilight says, "It's ok Starlight, you've helped plenty, I'll come to find you when we're done, ok?"
"T-Thank you Twilight," I say before following Redheart into a side room. The room has a large walk-in shower and a variety of soaps and conditioners.
"Towels are in this cabinet, and the hamper is right next to the sink, take all of the time you need," Nurse Redheart says before looking at me.
"W-why are you doing this for me?" I stutter, Redheart puts on a warm smile before saying, "Most ponies outside of the healthcare world never see more than a few drops of blood, you look like you're in shock, and regardless of our past I'm still here to help you."
I look to the floor in embarrassment, kicking at the floor with my front hoof awkwardly, "I'm sorry we didn't work out Red, it's just Twilight has me so busy with all of these friendship lessons, and now she's talking about opening a school, I've been so overwhelmed,"
Redheat puts a hoof on my shoulder before saying, "It's ok, you just have a lot going on, I miss what we had but it's for the better. Just remember you still have a friend here regardless,"
I smile before hugging her, "I'm happy you understand, thank you so much,"
She hugs back giving me a small nuzzle, "I've gotta get back to it, take the time you need,"
I nod as she leaves the room, I turn to get into the shower and catch a glance of myself in the mirror, a small blush on my face. I shake my head and get into the shower, turning the water cold and putting my face in the stream. I sigh and sit on the shower floor before closing the sliding door, I levitate one of the soaps over and begin to wash myself.
Brian POV
My vision is blurred and I feel dizzy, I've been experiencing time dilation for who knows how long, the voices of doctors both male and female come and go as I slip in and out of consciousness. I slowly regain my vision and my head doesn't feel as heavy. The room is empty and it appears to be nighttime, I glance down at my right shoulder to see it bandaged up and looking clean. I sigh in relief and set my head back on the pillow, looking around the room this appears to be your typical hospital room, just a bit more rustic with the mostly wooden furniture.
The door creaks open slowly and a white pony with a nurse hat on enters the room and approaches my bed, she pulls a clipboard stored at the end of my bed out. She holds the clipboard in one hoof and flips the pages with her mouth. I can see her eyes running across the words before she looks up at me, her eyes widen slightly and she gasps a tad.
"Y-Your awake, how do you feel?" She asks before rushing to my side.
I try to sit up but feel the pain again in my right shoulder before setting myself back down, "Easy there, you probably shouldn't put any weight on that arm for at least a few days," She says rubbing my arm softly.
"Agreed, it only hurts when I use it though," She nods before writing on the clipboard.
"Good, that means we used the right amount of Timberwolf antidote," she says before putting the clipboard back in front of the bed.
"Timber-what?" I ask in confusion, she nods before saying, "The animals that attacked you, are called Timberwolves. When they bite you their fangs inject poison into whatever they bite, if Starlight and Trixie hadn't gotten you here fast enough you could have been dead,"
I nod as I look around the room more, confusion on my face, "You're not from around here, are you?"
I shake my head, "Not really, I was riding my motorcycle through this tunnel, and next thing I know I'm being attacked by those wolf things,"
"Look, I'm not sure how you got here, but I'm sure the princess will have answers for you tomorrow," the nurse says.
I sigh looking down at my hands, sadness crossing my face. The nurse puts a hoof on my shoulder before saying, "It's gonna be alright, we're here for you, I'm here for you. If you need anything just let me know, ok?"
I nod, trying not to show my sadness, she nods before saying, "Get some rest, you'll have plenty of visitors tomorrow,"
Before she can leave I ask, "What's your name ma'am?"
She looks back at me with a smile and says, "Redheart, Nurse Redheart,"
I smile back at her before she leaves, I lay my head back down and put my hands to my face, trying to contain my emotions. I hope I can get back home soon, these ponies are nice and all but I don't want my friends and family back home to worry about me. I close my eyes and eventually fall asleep.
Brian's eyes slowly fluttered open, the world around him hazy as he struggled to regain full consciousness. His body felt heavy, and his right shoulder throbbed dully beneath the bandages. As his vision cleared, the wooden ceiling of the hospital room came into focus, followed by the quiet sound of breathing beside him. He turned his head slightly and saw Starlight Glimmer sitting at his bedside, her expression soft but concerned. Her hooves were resting on the bed, and her ears perked up when she noticed his movement.
"You're awake!" she said, a mix of relief and excitement in her voice.
Brian groaned softly, blinking as he adjusted to the dim light in the room. "Yeah… I think so." He swallowed, his throat dry. "Where am I?"
"Ponyville Hospital. You lost a lot of blood, but the doctors were able to stop the bleeding and treat the timberwolf poison," Starlight explained. "You've been out for a while."
Brian let out a slow breath, the memories of his last conscious moments flooding back—the cave, the wolves, the desperate fight, and then waking up in the cart. He flexed his fingers slightly, wincing at the stiffness in his limbs. "Guess I owe you one for getting me here."
Starlight smiled. "Well, Trixie and I just got lucky that we found you in time. You were in really bad shape."
Brian nodded slowly before realizing something. "Wait… my bike? My stuff? Is it—?"
"It's safe," Starlight assured him. "We brought it along in Trixie's wagon. Twilight made sure it was stored somewhere secure."
Before Brian could ask more questions, Starlight's horn lit up, and she pulled a cup of water from a nearby table, levitating it toward him. He hesitated for a second, watching the soft glow of her magic, then carefully took the cup from the air. The sensation of the magic around his fingers sent a small tingle up his arm. He quickly brushed it off and took a long drink, sighing in relief.
"I should let the others know you're awake. They've been waiting to talk to you," Starlight said, standing up. "Just… be ready. They have a lot of questions."
Brian raised an eyebrow. "Oh great. An interrogation."
Starlight chuckled. "Something like that. I'll be right back."
As she left the room, Brian exhaled and looked around properly for the first time. The hospital room was surprisingly simple—wooden walls, a window that let in the warm glow of the early morning sun, and a few medical instruments that looked far more rudimentary than what he was used to. The bed he lay in was firm but not uncomfortable, and to his side, a small tray held a bowl of untouched soup.
Before he could process much more, the sound of multiple sets of hooves clattering against the floor filled the hallway, and the door burst open. A flurry of color and movement rushed into the room as five ponies entered, their expressions a mix of curiosity, excitement, and relief.
"Oh my goodness, you're awake!" Twilight Sparkle said, stepping forward immediately. "We have so many questions!"
"Yeah, like what in Equestria are you?" Rainbow Dash blurted out, flapping her wings as she hovered near the bed.
"And where did ya come from?" Applejack added, adjusting her hat.
"Oh, and that machine thing you were riding! I've never seen anything like it before!" Pinkie Pie practically bounced in place.
Brian stared at them, slightly overwhelmed. He glanced at Starlight, who was standing in the doorway with an amused smirk. "Told you," she said with a chuckle.
Brian sighed and sat up a little straighter, preparing himself for what was sure to be a long conversation. "Alright… one question at a time."
Twilight stepped forward, her eyes filled with curiosity. "First things first—what exactly are you? We've never seen a creature like you before."
Brian rubbed the back of his head with his good arm. "I'm a human. Homo sapiens, if you want to be scientific about it. We're a species from a planet called Earth."
Twilight's eyes widened as she quickly summoned a quill and parchment. "Fascinating! And Earth—where is that?"
Brian exhaled. "That's the thing—I don't know how I got here, so I don't even know if Earth is in the same universe as this place. But it's… very different from here. No talking ponies, no magic. Just humans, animals, and technology."
Applejack tilted her hat back. "No magic? Then how do y'all get stuff done?"
Brian smirked. "Science, mostly. We develop technology to make life easier—cars, planes, medicine, computers. My bike, for example, runs on an internal combustion engine that burns fuel to move."
Rainbow Dash zipped closer. "So it's like a really fast wagon?"
Brian chuckled. "Yeah, you could say that. It can go a lot faster than a pony can run, but it needs roads or trails to work best."
Pinkie Pie suddenly popped up next to his bed. "Ooooh! Do humans have parties?" she asked eagerly.
Brian laughed, despite himself. "Yeah, we do. Birthdays, holidays, celebrations—you name it."
Pinkie gasped dramatically. "I need to throw you a 'Welcome to Equestria' party!"
Before Twilight could continue with another question, the door to the hospital room gently opened, and the atmosphere immediately shifted. The ponies turned as Princess Celestia entered, her regal presence commanding attention.
"My little ponies, I understand your excitement, but I must ask for a moment alone with our guest," Celestia said, her voice warm yet firm.
Twilight and Pinkie Pie looked particularly disappointed, but Celestia gave them a gentle smile. "He needs rest, and I promise you will all have more chances to speak with him later."
With some reluctance, the group nodded and began to file out. Pinkie Pie pouted but obeyed, and Twilight gave one last curious glance at Brian before exiting. Once the room was quiet again, Celestia stepped closer to Brian's bedside.
"I'm glad to see you're awake, human," Celestia said softly. Her gaze lingered on him for a moment longer than expected, as though searching for something deeper. Brian couldn't help but notice the knowing look in her eyes.
Brian shifted uncomfortably. "Uh, thanks. I don't know how I got here, but I'm starting to feel like I've stumbled into something much bigger than me."
Celestia smiled, her voice warm but mysterious. "Perhaps you have. There is much more at play here than you realize. In time, you will come to understand that your presence in Equestria may not be entirely by chance."
Brian blinked, but before he could respond, Celestia gave him a reassuring nod. "For now, rest. There will be time to explain more later."
After Celestia left, the door creaked open once more, and Starlight stepped inside. She hesitated at first, then walked up to Brian's bedside, her expression troubled.
"I was so scared," she admitted, her voice trembling. "When we found you, you were barely breathing… I thought you were going to die."
Brian looked at her, seeing the genuine worry in her eyes. He reached out with his good hand and gently took her hoof, giving it a reassuring squeeze. "Hey, I'm still here. You and Trixie saved my life."
Starlight sniffled, tears forming in her eyes as she looked away. "I just... I didn't know what to do. I felt so helpless."
Brian gave her hoof another squeeze. "You did more than enough, Starlight. I wouldn't be here if it weren't for you."
Her composure broke, and she let out a quiet sob, leaning her head down against the edge of the bed. Brian moved his hand to gently stroke her mane, comforting her as she cried. "It's okay," he murmured. "I'm okay."
They stayed like that for a while, Starlight finding solace in his presence, and Brian feeling, for the first time since arriving, that he wasn't completely alone.
Page Break
The next morning, the sunlight streamed through the window, casting a warm glow over the room. Brian blinked awake, stretching carefully as the dull ache in his shoulder reminded him of the previous day's ordeal. His body felt much better now, though, and he noticed the bandages on his shoulder were freshly replaced. The soreness had dulled significantly overnight, and he was grateful to be free of the worst of the pain.
As he slowly swung his legs over the side of the bed, he heard the soft clip-clop of hooves approaching. Starlight's familiar voice called out from the doorway.
"Good morning, Brian. Feeling any better?" she asked, her bright eyes soft with concern.
"Yeah, I'm definitely in better shape," Brian replied, standing up gingerly. He stretched his arms above his head, taking in the feeling of being on his feet again. "I think it's time for me to get out of here."
Starlight gave him a relieved smile. "You've been cooped up in here long enough. Let me help you with your things." She moved to grab his jacket, which was folded neatly on a nearby chair.
Brian hesitated. "I don't want to be a burden, but I really appreciate the help."
Starlight laughed softly. "It's no trouble. Besides, the others are waiting to see you."
As they left the room, Brian was immediately struck by the bright bustle of Ponyville. The sky was clear, and the streets were alive with the sounds of ponies going about their day. Starlight led him through the winding corridors of the hospital and out into the sunlight.
Waiting just outside was Twilight Sparkle, Rainbow Dash, and Applejack, each of them giving Brian warm smiles of greeting.
"Glad to see you're up and about, Brian!" Rainbow Dash said, flapping her wings excitedly. "Ready to stretch those legs?"
Brian grinned, testing his legs and rolling his shoulder. "Definitely. I'm not used to sitting around for so long."
"I'll say," Applejack chimed in, adjusting her hat. "If y'all don't mind, I was hopin' to talk about what happened out there. Y'know, the timberwolves and all."
Before Brian could respond, the sound of hooves clicking against the cobblestone street reached his ears. Starlight turned to see a familiar figure approaching—Trixie, the showmare, trotting toward them with her usual air of confidence. However, Brian could tell by the tension in her step that something was amiss.
"The Great and Powerful Trixie has arrived!" Trixie announced, puffing out her chest as she trotted up to the group. "I see the injured human has survived his ordeal. How… quaint."
Twilight narrowed her eyes at Trixie, the two of them locking gazes in what could only be described as a rivalry waiting to burst into full bloom. "What are you doing here, Trixie?" Twilight asked with a slight edge in her voice.
Trixie raised an eyebrow, smirking. "The Great and Powerful Trixie is here to ensure that the human gets the proper treatment. What, did you think only your precious little group could handle him?"
Twilight's eyes narrowed further, a spark of irritation flashing across her features. "I didn't realize you were the authority on what's best for him."
Brian watched in mild amusement, a little taken aback by how quickly the tension between the two flared. Starlight, noticing his bemusement, leaned closer and whispered, "Twilight and Trixie have a… history."
"Oh?" Brian asked, curious. "What kind of history?"
Before Starlight could respond, Trixie chimed in, a smug grin spreading across her face. "Twilight Sparkle, the 'princess of friendship,' is always so quick to act as though she knows best. I simply enjoy reminding her that she doesn't always have everything figured out."
Twilight opened her mouth to respond but was interrupted by Starlight's calming voice. "Trixie, let's not start anything today, okay?"
Trixie huffed but relented. "Fine. But if I ever want to show off my skills to everyone in Ponyville again, I expect you to be ready to watch, Sparkle."
Twilight sighed, looking to Brian as she tried to move the conversation forward. "Anyway, now that you're up, we've arranged for you to stay with us for a little while. We'll help you get acclimated to Ponyville." She glanced at Trixie with a pointed look. "Trixie, of course, will help as well. Since she's so 'helpful.'"
Trixie smirked at Twilight, but said nothing more.
Brian chuckled, shaking his head. "Sounds like it's gonna be a fun ride."
The group sets off through the streets of Ponyville. The town was bustling with life, and Brian couldn't help but feel a sense of wonder at how different everything was from the world he knew. Ponies trotted around, some carrying baskets, others chatting, while colorful buildings lined the cobblestone streets, giving the whole place a whimsical feel.
"So, this is Ponyville," Starlight said, waving a hoof to indicate the town around them. "It's small, but we all know each other pretty well."
Brian nodded, taking it all in. "It's got a nice vibe, kind of like a cozy little town." He paused and looked around again. "Is this the usual pace around here, or does it get crazier sometimes?"
"Usually it's pretty calm," Twilight answered. "But when things get hectic, it tends to get really hectic." Her eyes flicked to Trixie, who was walking beside her with a smug grin.
"Indeed," Trixie chimed in, "but the Great and Powerful Trixie is always ready for a little chaos. After all, it's just a part of the show!"
Twilight rolled her eyes, but Brian could tell it was more out of familiarity than actual irritation. "I'm sure Ponyville loves having you around, Trixie."
Trixie flashed a sly smile. "Why, thank you, Twilight. I am, after all, the performer of the hour. Who else could handle such an important job?"
Twilight chuckled dryly. "Important job? Please. Last time you tried to 'perform' in Ponyville, you ended up causing a disaster."
Trixie raised an eyebrow. "The Great and Powerful Trixie does not cause disasters, Sparkle. It was simply… a misunderstanding of epic proportions."
Brian's curiosity got the better of him, and he glanced over at Starlight. "What happened?"
Starlight winced slightly. "Uh… well, Trixie tried to take over Ponyville with a magical amulet once. Long story short, it didn't go so well."
Brian blinked. "Take over the town?"
Trixie puffed out her chest proudly. "The Great and Powerful Trixie does not fail! There were circumstances beyond my control."
Twilight smirked, her voice teasing. "Right, and those circumstances included turning into a supervillain."
Trixie scowled at Twilight. "Trixie was not a supervillain! She was a misunderstood hero!"
Brian laughed, shaking his head at the playful bickering. "Sounds like you two have quite the history."
"Oh, you have no idea," Twilight said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "Trixie and I have years of 'fun' to look back on."
Starlight stepped in before the conversation could get too heated. "Alright, let's move on before things get… interesting." She smiled at Brian. "This is Sweet Apple Acres," she said, gesturing to a large orchard on the outskirts of town, where trees laden with apples stretched across the rolling hills.
Applejack, who had joined them as they toured the town, gave a proud smile. "Yup, this here is where the magic of apples happens."
Brian raised an eyebrow. "The magic of apples? I thought that was just good farming."
Applejack chuckled. "Well, we put a lotta love into our apples. And trust me, they taste better than any apple you've ever had."
Trixie, overhearing, scoffed lightly. "I'm sure they're wonderful, but are they as impressive as Trixie's showstopping performances?"
Twilight shot Trixie a playful glare. "Trixie, we're not here to compare apples to… performances." She turned back to Brian. "Sweet Apple Acres is where the best apples in Equestria come from, no competition."
Trixie crossed her hooves dramatically. "That may be true, but when it comes to entertainment, there's no comparison to the Great and Powerful Trixie. I'm sure your apples are fine, but would they fill a whole stadium?"
Applejack's eyebrow arched. "Are we talkin' apples, or are we talkin' about you again, Trixie?"
Starlight chuckled, stepping in between them. "Let's keep it friendly, y'all. It's a tour, remember?"
Brian, entertained by the ongoing banter, asked, "So, what's next on this tour? Where do we head now?"
Twilight quickly recovered, shifting the topic. "Next up is Golden Oaks Library. It's a bit of a mess right now, but it's where I live. You'll get to meet Spike, my assistant."
Brian smiled. "Sounds good. I'm curious to see how you organize your books."
Trixie, however, had other plans. "Perhaps Trixie could offer you a performance to remember right here?" she asked, puffing out her chest once more.
Twilight groaned, rubbing her temples. "Trixie, not everything is about your performances. Can't you just, I don't know, relax for once?"
"Relax?" Trixie shot back. "I am always relaxed. The Great and Powerful Trixie simply knows how to make an entrance!"
Rainbow Dash, who had been flying lazily above them, swooped down. "Yeah, and she knows how to make things awkward, too."
Trixie gave her a pointed stare. "Rainbow Dash, you don't even know the meaning of 'dramatic flair.'"
Rainbow grinned, raising a hoof in mock offense. "I've got plenty of flair. It's just way cooler than yours."
Brian, laughing, had to admit that he was enjoying the back-and-forth between the two. "Sounds like you two could start a show of your own."
Twilight smirked. "Maybe we'll call it 'The Drama of Trixie.'"
Trixie gasped, scandalized. "You wouldn't dare!"
As the group continued their stroll through Ponyville, Brian found himself caught up in the quirky dynamics between the ponies, amused at how easily they slipped into a playful rhythm. Despite the banter and teasing, it was clear that they all cared about each other, and in a way, it reminded him of the way friends would poke fun at one another back home.
As the group continued their walk through Ponyville, Brian couldn't help but feel a growing sense of unease. The warmth of the sun and the laughter of his new friends around him contrasted with the gnawing uncertainty that had been eating at him since he first arrived. His thoughts drifted back to his world—the world where he had friends, family, and a life that felt so far away now.
He stopped for a moment as they passed a vendor selling apples, his eyes fixated on the scene before him. The sounds of the bustling marketplace faded into the background, and his mind wandered.
What if I never get home?
He remembered the last moments before everything changed—the fight with the timberwolves, the feeling of being pulled into darkness, and then waking up in this strange land. The uncertainty had plagued him from the very beginning, but it was only now that the weight of it truly began to sink in.
"Hey, you okay?" Starlight's voice cut through his thoughts, and he blinked, looking up to see her standing beside him with a concerned look on her face.
Brian forced a smile, though it didn't quite reach his eyes. "Yeah, just… lost in thought."
Starlight didn't look convinced, but she didn't push him further. She simply nodded and continued walking, giving him space to work through his thoughts.
Twilight, noticing Brian's sudden quietness, glanced back. "You're not still worried about getting home, are you?" she asked gently.
Brian hesitated, his gaze lingering on the bustling streets of Ponyville before meeting Twilight's concerned eyes. "Yeah, I guess I am. I mean, this place is great, don't get me wrong. You guys are all… well, you're amazing. But it's not my world. I have friends, a life, things I was doing before I ended up here. And the longer I stay here, the more I'm starting to wonder—will I ever get back?"
The group slowed as they noticed his change in mood, Starlight and Twilight both sharing a look of concern. Trixie, however, stayed a bit further ahead, clearly oblivious to the shift in the atmosphere. But Brian could feel the weight of his words hanging in the air.
Twilight sighed softly, coming to a stop beside him. "I can't imagine how hard it must be for you. But… you're not alone here. We'll help you, Brian. We'll figure something out."
"But what if there's nothing to figure out?" Brian replied, his voice quieter now. "What if this is where I'm supposed to be? What if I'm never going to see my friends again?" His throat tightened, and for the first time since he'd arrived, he felt the true sting of being so far from home.
Starlight, noticing the pain in his eyes, stepped closer. "You will get home. I know it's not easy to accept, but if there's a way, we'll help you find it. I've seen things—strange things that shouldn't be possible—but that doesn't mean you won't get back."
Brian nodded, though the doubt still lingered. The truth was, he had no idea what was possible in this world. Magic was real, but was there a way to send him home? Could anypony here help him find a way back to Earth, or was he destined to remain a stranger in a strange land forever?
"Thanks," he said quietly. "I appreciate that. I really do."
Twilight smiled softly, her expression warm. "You've got a lot of friends here now. You're not alone in this, Brian. We'll help you through it, one step at a time."
Brian couldn't help but smile back, though the worry still gnawed at him. He appreciated their support, but in the quietest corners of his mind, a lingering question remained—was it enough? Could these new friendships truly replace the ones he'd left behind?
As the group continued their walk through Ponyville, Brian found himself distracted by the sound of his own footsteps echoing in his mind. The warm, welcoming atmosphere around him couldn't quite drown out the anxiety building in his chest.
As they approached Twilights Castle, the others chatting around him, Brian found his mind racing again. He had tried to push the thoughts aside, but they kept creeping in. He wasn't sure how much longer he could pretend everything was okay when the feeling of being lost only seemed to grow stronger.
Suddenly, he felt a gentle tap on his arm, and when he turned, he saw Starlight standing beside him. The others had moved ahead, and she was the only one still close.
"Brian," she said softly, her eyes searching his face. "Can we talk for a second?"
Brian gave her a small nod, stepping off to the side with her as they moved a little farther away from the others. The peaceful sounds of the town faded into the background, leaving a quiet space between them.
"I didn't mean to bring the mood down," Brian started, looking down at the ground, feeling a bit guilty for worrying everyone.
Starlight shook her head. "It's not about that. You're allowed to feel however you feel, Brian. I just… I want you to know that you don't have to carry that weight alone." She stepped closer, her voice softer now. "Whatever happens, I'll be here for you. If you need to talk, or if you just need someone to sit with, I'll be there."
Brian met her gaze, feeling a warmth in his chest at her words. He wasn't used to this kind of support, not from someone he'd just met. And yet, here she was, offering him everything—comfort, understanding, and hope.
"I really appreciate it, Starlight," he said, his voice quieter. "I don't know what I'd do without you guys."
"You'll never have to know," Starlight replied firmly, a reassuring smile on her face. "We're in this together, remember?"
Brian smiled back, his heart a little lighter despite the lingering uncertainty. He hadn't expected to feel this at ease with someone so quickly, but Starlight made it easy to trust her.
As if to seal the moment, Starlight reached out with her muzzle, gently nuzzling him on the shoulder. Brian froze for a moment, surprised by the affectionate gesture. But it didn't feel intrusive or strange—it felt comforting, as though it was just what he needed.
She pulled back slightly, her eyes soft and warm. "I'm serious, Brian. Whatever happens, I'm here."
Brian's heart swelled, and for a fleeting moment, the doubt and worry that had weighed so heavily on him seemed to lessen, just a little. He returned her smile, feeling a sense of peace that had been absent since his arrival in Equestria.
"Thanks, Starlight. I really mean it."
Starlight nodded, her expression unwavering. "Anytime."
With a deep breath, Brian felt a small weight lift from his shoulders. He wasn't alone in this, and as long as he had friends like Starlight by his side, maybe the road ahead wouldn't be so daunting after all.
They stood there for a moment, taking in the calmness of the moment before rejoining the others, a newfound sense of resolve in Brian's heart.
