Lyra's Mishap
Science and other things I don't understand in the least.
Previous ChapterAs I sit in the room marked "Science" in Twilight's library, I watch her run back and forth between different intruments and machines, turning dials and pressing buttons. Now, me being a unicorn of musical tastes, I haven't the slightest idea what she's doing, but hopefully whatever it is, she can help me. Suddenly, she turns to me and says,
"Okay, I just need to recalibrate the coordination matrix and allign the master vexator, then the brain obervator will be ready."
"Umm, could you repeat that please... in english?" I ask, not understanding a single word in that sentence other than brain, and wondering what kind of contraption Twilight is planning on doing to my brain.
"Oh! Sorry..." She laughs. I wonder if she thinks in big words. Wouldn't suprize me. "What I mean is I've changed one of my machines to help figure out what exactly is going on your head." She explains.
"I see... This won't hurt will it?" I ask gingerly.
"No of course not. Science is not a contact sport." She replies.
I nod, and sit back, waiting for her to finish. As she works, she stops and looks at me for a second.
"What?" I ask.
"Oh nothing, I was just thinking that you probably shouldn't sit like that. It looks bad for your back."
I contemplate just getting up and leaving. Why does everypony think I'm weird just for the way I sit? There are plenty of even weirder ponies, and yet they all focus their attention on me.
"I think my back will be fine, Twi... How much longer 'till your machine is ready?"
She finishes turning a few knobs and pulls a lever, sparking the machine to life. "It's ready now!" She yells over the rumble of the machine.
"Okay so what do I need to do exactly?" I ask her, not recognizing the machine that sat before me rumbling and chattering.
"This machine will calculate any ruptures in your cerebral cortex, determining if this voice is foreign or if your just hearing things." There she goes again, using her science mumbo-jumbo. I wonder if there's an actual language dedicated to science, and it's her native tongue, or if she's just smarter than everypony.
"English?" I remark.
"It will tell me if there actually is someone speaking to your through your mind, or if your just hearing things." She explains.
"Would it kill you to use simpler words from now on, please?" I ask.
"Yeah, sorry..." She scratches her mane, an embarrassed look on her face, "What you need to do is just sit inside it and focus your magic on yourself to create an aura around your head, that way the machine can look at the status of your mind and find any problems."
"Okay." Sounds easy enough to do right? I mean, the only time I ever use magic for is to play my lyre and levitate certain objects, but I'm sure creating an aura around my head wouldn't be too hard, right?
I step into the machine. Inside it's dark and cramped, and I begin to wonder if maybe Twilight is attempting to kidnap me or trap me somewhere, but I doubt it. As I begin to focus my magic, I hear Twilight say,
"Be sure to keep your mind as blank as possible. So much as a thought might cause the aura spell to change space and time."
Oh great, all of equestria counts on me not thinking. I focus my magic into an aura around my head, attempting to keep my mind blank other than focusing on the task at hand.
"Great job, I'm starting to get some readings! Just keep up, not too much longer now!" She yells to me over the sudden roar of the machine.
I continue to keep up the spell, but my mind is slipping into a thought that's been in my head all day. Out of every pony in Equestria, am I really the only one who sits upright all the time? I mean, there must be some pony out there who does it. Maybe not even in Equestria, but some far off world. If only they were here, then perhaps I wouldn't feel so alone. No, maybe if everypony in Equestria sat like I did, then I wouldn't be alone. I feel a sudden shaking inside the machine, but shrug it off. Probably just Twilight at the controls, making adjustments.
I realize that I just thought. Uh oh. Hopefully it didn't do anything, but I decide not to worry about it, and just focus on the aura. At the same time, I think to myself, why should I change for everypony when what I do doesn't hurt anyone? Perhaps they should all change for me...
BAM!
BANG!
CLANK!
SCREETCH!
POW!
The machine is going beserk! For all I know, it could blow up any second! I quickly crawl to the door, pulling on the handle. It's not opening! Oh no... I can't die. Not here, not now! I quickly forget about the aura around my head and focus my magic on getting this door to budge. After a few good body slams to the door, it bursts open, and then, silence.
The machine... it stopped! Thank Celestia. I walk out the door and turn around to look at the machine. There is a sizeable smoke cloud billowing out of it. I think back to what Twilight said, 'Science is not a contact sport'. She was right, it's even worse, it's a death trap!
"Well, Twilight, looks like your machine didn't work the way you planned, eh?" I remark.
I hear a moaning sound, coming from where Twilight was sitting, near the controls.
"Are you okay!?" I turn and rush to the controls, but don't see Twilight anywhere. I hear the moaning again, it's coming from beneath me.
I look down, and what's laying at my hooves isn't Twilight. It's not even a pony. It looks like it's a...
Uh oh...
This... this can't have happened.
All I meant to do was... but somehow...
Princess Celestia will NOT be happy about this...
Laying at my hooves... is a human...
