Darkness was everywhere. Only darkness could be seen. Nothing could be heard and the space was empty. Where was our little pony? He was sitting in such darkness being enveloped in nothing. He sat unconsciously as he waited for something. Waiting for a change or waiting to change himself. Was there ever going to be a change? Was the change going to be good or bad? He waited and waited for the change.
Soon the darkness shifted as he could feel the space turn into an empty room. There was still only darkness and only a still room could be felt. The wood under his hoof came to life as he felt its texture and roughness. Bookshelves appeared from the darkness filling the space that was the empty room. The pony could feel his conscious coming back. Was it really back though? The room was still dark, still full of no life.
As he was thinking of it life finally came into the room. A spirit began to shift the air and twist the darkness to become the pony’s shadow which now formed from the newly lit moon peering from the newly created window. Who was this shadow the pony wondered? Was this my shadow? Was this shadow maybe just really me and I am still alone? The young stallion could feel himself becoming more conscious as the room lit under the light from the new moon.
Was he alive yet? He looked for a mirror and soon one formed from the darkness. With the dim blue light shining from the window he was able to see himself in the mirror. His long white mane and tail were strait and nice. His dark blue coat looked beautiful under the moonlight. His light blue eyes were as blank as his flank as he tried to find himself. Was this person really him? Did he really look like that?
Soon a light came from the side of the room as it peered from under the newly formed door. The same moonlight peering from under the door drew him to open the door and exit the room. A field came into vision as the moonlight struck down on the field of dark green blades that rustled in the wind. A path formed under him as the grass began to disappear and turned into a dirt road leading down the hill.
He followed the road soon losing sight of the shack he was born in. Where was he going to go? What else was alive in this lifeless world? Only his shadow accompanied him on this lonely path. Tree's came into vision as the leaves started to fall gracefully under the moonlight. He stared up at the moon while continuing on his path. The moon was still in the sky without any movement as its surface acted like a giant dimly lit flashlight.
Water could be heard rushing in the distance, perhaps a river? Life needs water to survive. Would he find life by the river? The path soon turned into a small curved bridge over the stream that flowed under it. Many trees were around but they bared no fruit, or even a sense of life. The trees felt lifeless as if they were just painted beautifully into a background of a lifeless picture. Was he even alive himself?
A building came into view as he followed the path. It was a large building that cast a magnificent shadow under the dim moonlight. Was there life inside this place? Would he finally find the life he was looking for? He continues beyond the grand doors that creaked with their opening. Darkness was about all he could see in the long lonely hallway. No life anywhere inside the empty hallways. Not until he saw the light.
There was a bright yellow light that did not fit this world. Its radiance could be seen stretching around all corners of the building. Its warmth and radiance only grew as he made his way to it. He could feel for the first time the true life that existed in this world darkness. He soon found the room that held the light. It's origin being from a small orb on a desk. He could not resist its warmth, he could not resist its radiance, and he could not stop himself from obtaining the life he was looking for.
The light that shined from the orb was now gone. He looked in the mirror as he saw the life that had returned to his eyes, the cutie mark that returned to his flank, and the new small bright aura that sounded him. He could finally feel once again, he could finally think once again, he could finally be alive once again. He could feel the life inside him as it gave him new feelings. He could finally feel the world around him as it was.
He was frightened. He was lonely. The light he finally obtained had returned his emotions. Lost in a world of darkness he could not control his body as it began to shake in fear. The world that once seemed like it held no life suddenly felt like it held more life then he could see. More life then he knew about, life that was waiting for him in the shadows, life that wanted to steal his light.
He left the room as he began to run through the empty halls of darkness. The walls shifted as his vision began to blur. Sounds of unknown origin began to attract his attention as he ran away from them. The pathways of the building formed into a maze that he would never find his way out of. Only the dim moonlight shining in from the windows could give him vision. The building was filled with darkness that only grew the longer he stayed.
The moonlight itself felt like it was almost fading. His only source of light in this world was about to abandon him. The darkness shifted in the hallways as it made echoing noises that only sent chills down his spine. What was in the darkness? Where was the monster that was waiting to take away his life? What was he going to do now? He only continued to run from the darkness. He saw no exit, he felt no way out. Even the windows could not be opened.
He couldn't keep running forever. He entered one of the rooms to take a break, scanning the darkness for something to use. The room with only some desks and chairs had only a single exit. Its windows could also not be opened and only shined the dim moonlight into it. Even though the door didn't open after him, he could still feel the darkness that had chased him into the room. Would he ever be able to get away from the darkness?
The walls began to cry and blood started to run down from them. The sea of red lines made the room shift and blur as it began to laugh at the lost pony. Only small dark chuckles could be heard echoing throughout the room. The lines only multiplied until the walls were nearly drenched with blood. He couldn't stop himself from shaking even more from the cold air that began to fill the room.
His breath that started to turn into a dimly lit fog from the moonlight only grew heavier by the second. His body began to go numb as its stamina was being drained away. He couldn't stay in the room any longer, or else he would lose his light. The door was frozen in place and would not let him leave. He forced himself against the door until it broke leaving a few large splinters digging into his skin. He ignored the small blood that was now dripping from him and continued to run through the halls.
He was no longer freezing from the room but was still shaking out of control. His mind ignored any pain that the wound he had was trying to send him. His steps grew loud as he forced himself to run as far away from the room as he could. No exit could ever be found. The maze of hallways only shifted on him as it kept him inside the building. He couldn't keep running for much longer so he tried to rest in another room.
The room was more like a kitchen as it had food stacked on all the counters as it glistened under the small moonlight that shined through the window. Hunger filled his stomach as he looked in awe at all the food. He could not stop himself from gorging down any food that was near him. Any feelings of being scared vanished as it became replaced by the bliss from the delicious food. Any worries he had begun to vanish.
His bliss came to a quick end however when a sharp pain shot through his mouth. He coughed as razor sharp metal fell from his mouth along with streams of blood. If he didn't have enough restraint while eating he would have quickly swallowed the razor sharp metal which would have cut open his throat and other insides. He coughed some more until only a small amount of blood was left dripping from his mouth. He had to leave the room quickly, as he could feel the darkness laughing at him.
He wasn't going to give up yet. One of these rooms had to have what he was looking for. He opened another door and entered into a room that looked like a museum exhibit. Behind some glass were many displays of all sorts of items. One that caught his attention the most however, was the one with a key. The key was tagged with an "Exit" tag and the sign said it was to exit this building. He wasted no time trying to find a way to get it.
He could not find anything nearby to break the glass with, and couldn't wait much longer before the darkness reached him. He had only one option left and that was to break it himself. He couldn't use the side he already injured from breaking down the door, so he used his other side. He slammed his body into the glass as it shattered and cut him repeatedly. Blood started to run down his side as his wounds opened up and pain shot throughout his body.
He didn't care about the pain. He didn't care about the glass he stepped on which gave him even more cuts on his hoofs. He finally found his way out. The key that would let him escape and finally go home was in front of him. He picked it up with his mouth and prepared to leave. As he did however the key turned to darkness and vanished. Only laughter could be heard from the darkness as they all laughed at him. He rushed out the door and wouldn't even bother trying any more rooms.
The maze of rooms and hallways only continued to taunt him. He was tired of going into those rooms. He was going to just keep trying to find his way to the exit, no matter how pointless it seemed. He wouldn't be mocked by the shadows anymore. He would find the way out, and escape the hell he was trapped in. The darkness only continued to laugh and chuckle at him as he ran and ran.
The sound of his running and the laughter from the darkness filled the hallways. Still no exit appeared, still no end to this nightmare. What was going to happen to him? Was he going to lose his light? Soon a door that stuck out form all the others appeared. Grand doors he thought he would never see again. Grand doors that he pushed open to enter this hell. He had finally found his exit.
The door would not open. The darkness drew near him as its laugh grew more intense. Soon he heard the darkness speak. The darkness that had tormented him for so long would finally let him out. That is, with one condition of course. He would have to leave them his shadow. The shadow he was born with, the shadow that accompanied him the entire time, and the shadow that was the only darkness he could accept.
The dim moonlight was beaming down on the field of grass and trees. Only a single life could be seen running along this path. A figure that lived in the light but had no shadow. He continued to run over the river and following the path back home. The room he was born in came into view sitting on top of a hill welcoming the injured pony back who had finally found his light. All he needed was his home, the place where no darkness could now reach.
Moonlight shined through the window lighting up the small room. The only darkness that was in it was lifeless, and comforting. He looked once again in the mirror he first saw himself in. He was surrounded by a brilliant light that would easily distract you from the blood running down his mouth and sides. His eyes which were once full of life however, were not the same as they were before. Darkness filled his eyes as it blinded him worse than his light.
Heavy beating was heard on the door. It continued over and over as it tried to break it down. The pony became scared and couldn't move his body as each beat grew louder. It didn't take long before the door finally broke and the intruder finally got in. Intruder was probably the wrong word, as his shadow was also born here. His shadow which was no longer darkness clinging to the ground, his shadow which was now the same as him.
His shadows eyes were enraged with a crimson red. He shrieked in pain from everything the darkness did to him. His teeth became sharp and jagged as he prepared to attack the one that betrayed him. He couldn't stop his rage, and the other couldn't do anything to fight. His teeth began to sink into the flesh of the brilliantly lit pony. The light he was betrayed for, the light that burned the longer he stared at it. He began ripping away the flesh until the light was gone. Hardly anything was left as his anger subdued. His brother had lost his light, and he had lost his brother. He had nothing left to be a shadow of, and soon faded away along with the dream.
The pony woke up with his heart racing so fast, the beating actually began to hurt his chest. He quickly got out of bed and into the kitchen. He looked into a mirror and saw himself just normal while still picturing what he saw in his nightmare. He glanced at the time to see it was around 3AM. Not many dare to sleep on Nightmare Night. Sleeping during the night is considered an insult, and the violator is stricken with horrific nightmares. It's the reason everyone stays up all night to celebrate, and is the reason he wouldn't try to sleep on that night ever again.
