(Prologue) The Last Letter
The cursor flickered. I haven't written a single word in a long time. Bloody writers block. Ideas were flooding my mind a moment ago. Wonderful openings but I couldn't seem to continue the stories after those intros. It was annoying, I really wanted to be able to finish a story so badly. It was a goal I had set for myself, one thing in life I had set out to achieve.
Screw this, I told myself.
I started watching My Little Pony episodes on my computer again. Like a pain killer, it carried my worries and stress away with it.
The credits concluded the episode and the clock showed ten. I guess her mail would be here soon.
Writing to Twilight has always been a thrill. The excitement that was obtained from opening one of her letters was indescribable. I went outside and opened up the mailbox, surely enough there was a letter there. Barely containing my excitement, I rushed back into the house and sat in the living room, illuminated by only a single lamp and a warm fire that kept me cozy despite the freezing temperature.
I opened the letter. Twilight didn't have Spike send letters to me. She did not want anypony knowing that she was exchanging letters with a human.
The contents of the letter though, was, hard to swallow. Tears welled up in my eyes as I read in disbelief, about the passing of my pen pal, Twilight.
" Hey Twilight, am I considered your friend?"
" Sure! why not?"
" I'm glad we met,Twilight."
I woke up. The cold floor offered no condolences as to my despair. I got up and found the letter on my chair, I picked it up slowly and in my heart silently begged that I was just having a nightmare. But no amount of pleading changed what was in the letter. I cried a second time.
" Dear human, we regret to bring news to you that your dear friend, Twilight, has passed away. Enclosed is letter and an item that was requested to be passed to you."
" Hey, in case you get this message, I guess it means that I wouldn't be able to send any more letters."
There was sign of dried up tears on the sheet of paper.
" I found out I was terminally ill only recently and had decided that I would have to hide it from everyone, including you. I'm sorry about that. For the time between the realization and this letter to you, I thought about many things important to me. Like my friends, Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy, Rarity, Princess Celestia, Princess Luna and so many others including you. I thought of all that I had achieved with all of them. I felt remorse because I still had so many things I wanted to do and be, like finally work with Princess Celestia one day, see Rainbow Dash join the Wonderbolts and soar high in the sky and perform a sonic rainboom,have another zap-apple jam sandwich, have one last party and blow out candles on my birthday cake again, and all the books I still haven't read. So many things to do. I hoped that my absence would not cause that much of a difference in their daily lives, but I know things wouldn't be the same, I also worry about the safety of Equestria, I as a wielder of one of the Elements of Harmony would be gone soon, what would that mean? I only did one thing I knew I could with my limited time, I started writing letters to everypony I knew. Hopefully that would make up for the silence about my illness. You once said you face problems in life, well I'm here to tell you it's never too late, sadly that's not the case for me. Writing to you for these few months have been amazing, I still remembered how I received my first letter from you. As soon as we both noticed our letterboxes were linked we started writing to each other ever since. You've been a great companion throughout this time and I wish, that I could still write more to you for time to come. But it had to end this way, and I would like to apologize for not being able to be there for you next time. But like Pinkie has always said, never stop smiling, and move on. I also promised you that I would let my friends know about you so I left a note upon my deathbed explaining it all. And one more thing, I also sent you a box with a few things, I hope that it helps now that I will be gone soon.
Yours faithfully and lovingly for the last time, Twilight Sparkle."
A tear drifted down my cheek and landed on the letter.
She just left like that. Gone. Her dreams unachieved, her friends including me devastated, and she was still young.
I only found strength to open up the box that came along with the letter. Inside I found pictures of Twilight and her friends. Each containing and preserving a memory that meant something special to her. She even wrote what event it was on the back of the picture. Like her first sleepover, her first party with Pinkie, her first group photo with all of them. It was all unbearable and over-whelming. I also found part of Twilight's mane. She actually cut out a bit of her mane and tied it up for me.
" You can take all these things back,"
I spoke softly to myself. Holding the box with her belongings inside it.
" I don't want to keep em, I'll wait for you to ask for it back and I'll return it one day. I'll write a letter to you every day. Just promise me one last thing. That one day, you'll wake up, and reply my letters. I won't care if you're tardy, I'll make it up to you instead."
I did just that. Instead of a letter every week, I wrote one every day now. Every one of them narrating an experience of mine, or just something I would love to share, sometimes even with a picture of a beautiful scenery. In hopes that one day I get to receive just one letter in return.
Just one from that special pony.
