Many Horrors and Unknowns exist that threaten Equestria, both from within and from the outside.

In the year 5 AR, the northern lands of Equestria briefly suffered a small incursion of Trolls: brutish beasts with fearsome maws and massive clubs, that had wandered in from Griffin territory. The Princesses sent a full-strength platoon of guardsponies to intervene, and they successfully vanquished the blue-skinned beasts.

The soldiers find the Trolls' erstwhile den scattered with treasures of silver, gold, and iron. Amongst these, they also find a broken metal statue. All these the soldiers bring back, to be stowed away in the royal treasury and royal museum.

The broken statue, though, has other plans.
