Combat-based Magic Spells

Everypony knows who the tutelage of Princess Celestia was, Twilight Sparkle, bearer of the element of magic and one of the most prominent and skillful unicorn magic users ever known. Knighted multiple times for saving the Kingdom of Equestria, including saving the Princess' sister, Luna, and defeating the chaotic lord, Discord.

Her name was talked about among ponies everyday. Her prestige was recognized all around Equestria. Her beauty catches the eyes of a stallion ever so often. She had an attractive distinctive moderate sapphire blue mane with a violet and brilliant rose streak, a pale light grayish mulberry coat and violet eyes. Her cuite mark was a pale pink star with five stars surrounding it and one bigger white star mostly hidden behind the pale pink star.

From normal walks in the streets, to quiet studies in her apartment, and Ponyville's library, a stallion would propose a date with her. But they will always be turned down. Some would say that they would not be surprised. It was expected from a studious student, always absorbed reading tomes and books.

As a dedicated practitioner of the art of unicorn magic, a surge of bright magenta energy illuminates her horn every day, every hour, every minute. Her exceptional skills in the art was admired and envied by aspiring unicorns. She once changed an apple into a cart, made an object "want it, need it" by anyone who laid eyes on it, summoned a force field around her home, traveled back in time with a spell created by Star Swirl the Bearded and the list goes on. But be weary of her temper, for she can explode in flames when she is.

Today, she will have to control that fury, because she screwed up, right in front for her mentor to see. She failed to pass a test.

This test required her to summon a force field for two users for five minutes. One is for her, the other is conjured around any object. It was a simple magic test for her abilities, but the shame fell on Twilight when her force fields  crumbled and shattered into billions of shining sparkles, they floated around like fireflies.

The sparkles floated around Princess Celestia's room and disappeared into thin air one by one. Twilight's legs gave in, and she fell to the floor in exhaustion. Beads of sweat trickled down her forehead. The silence was replaced with heavy panting. Normally, Princess Celestia would help her to her hooves and give her words of encouragement, telling her that it was okay if she failed a test. What mattered was that she tried. But today is an awkward day. Princess Celestia did the opposite of the expected. She just stood still, her face reflected no concern, no worries. Just. Plain. Stoic.

"Twilight Sparkle." Princess Celestia sternly said.

"Yes... Princess Celestia?"

"I am disappointed." That word hit Twilight like venom.

"I... I'm sorry Princess Celestia. I'm... so sorry." Twilight spoke in between breaths with melancholy. Remember Twilight, controlled fury, controlled fury, Twilight reminded herself. Princess Celestia stared at Twilight for a moment before she approached her and helped her to stand.

A few weeks ago, Twilight wrote to her teacher about advancing her skills and knowledge in combat-based magic spells and requested advice on how to proceed. Princess Celestia wrote back immediately, with a package of spell tomes regarding combat-based magic spells and told her to be prepared for a test in the future.

Princess Celestia split the test into two parts. The first part was the theoretical part which tests Twilight on a few general basics of combat spells. The second part was, the practical. Twilight aced the theory with ease, but broke at the practical. Princess Celestia WILL be frank about this, she is surprised. With the magical power Twilight had, Princess Celestia thought that the spell would be far too simple for her. Looking at what is happening now, she could only wonder what on Equestria was happening.

Twilight's legs gave in. Princess Celestia swiftly brought up a foreleg to catch her before she could fall to the floor.

"Easy Twilight, you've exhausted yourself."

"Thanks, Princess Celestia." Princess Celestia levitated a chair in the room to support Twilight. She took her own seat in front of her on the floor, levitated a thick tome and flipped to a page and showed it to Twilight.

On the page it reads "Have a food source beside you, hold your breath, count to ten, and create a source link between the food source and you. The source link will drain the energies from the food source to you. Very soon, you will feel energized again. Breathe when you are done."

"Try this, Twilight." Princess Celestia levitated a cupcake with pink frosting which was sitting on her table to Twilight. Twilight followed the instructions on the page. She took a big gulp of air and held it. Her horn glowed, and a bright magenta aura surrounded the cupcake. The magic kept sapping the chemicals needed to Twilight and consuming the cupcake, like an invisible force taking bites from the cupcake. Twilight let go of her breath and started to breathe.

"How are you feeling now?"

"I feel rejuvenated. I think I can stand now." Twilight stood up slowly, with support from Princess Celestia. The spell Twilight just used has no name, a spell created by the most iconic wizard in history; Star Swirl the Bearded.

"That spell doesn't have a name, Princess?"

"Yes, it doesn't. And so is for the dozens of other spells Star Swirl created." Princess Celestia closed the book.

"Do you want to try again?" Princess Celestia asked kindly, the stern tone was gone.

"Huh?"

"The test."

"The test? Didn't I fail it already?" Twilight solemnly asked. Princess Celestia chuckled and levitated another book to the both of them.

"You could always try again, Twilight. Only when you concede, do you fail." Princess Celestia flipped the book open to a page and started to read it's content.

"Multiple Defensive Force Field. Charge your horn with magic and visualize the objects you want to be protected. Chant Air-gu-roos-pro-teh-ti. A force field will cover you and the objects."

"Airguroosprotehti. Airguroosprotehti." Twilight chanted. A bright magenta force field covered her and another covered a vase on Princess Celestia's table.

"You're getting the hang of it. Now maintain them for five minutes." Princess Celestia encouraged her. A thought suddenly came up in her mind.

"So, how's Spike?" Princess Celestia casually asked.

"He's okay. He's got his own leg injured a week ago, and now he walks around with a pair of crutches." Twilight said as she tried to concentrate on maintaining the force fields and speaking at the same time.

"Oh, I hope he's recovering fast." Another thought flashed through Princess Celestia's mind and it made her smile mischievously.

"I heard you have a coltfriend now, Twilight."

"A what?" Twilight asked, astounded at the question. Oblivious to her intentions.

"A coltfriend. Tell me, what's he like?" Princess Celestia lean forward, smiling with interest. Twilight felt her legs were starting to shake and sweat trickling down her forehead. She's losing focus. Princess Celestia thought.

"I--, I don't know what are you talking about Princess. I don't have a coltfriend." Twilight's voice started to sound shaky. Her force fields were flashing, the sign of flakiness. Princess Celestia chuckled, and leaned away.

"Okay, I'll stop asking." Twilight breathed a mental sigh of relief. She called forth all of her concentration on the force fields. The force fields soon stopped flashing. Princess Celestia pivot her head to look at the clock on her wall. Taking note of the time, she turned back to Twilight.

"You can stop now. You passed" She said, congratulating her and clapping her hooves.

"So, what's next?" Twilight asked as she left the Princess' room with Princess Celestia.

"Some offensive spells. Like shooting a magic ray, conjuring temporary weapons. It's in one of the books I gave you. Study hard, Twilight."

"Yes Princess Celestia." Twilight waved her goodbye before she left the castle. Princess Celestia returned to her room and closed the balcony doors.

Reading was like a habit to Twilight. Once she starts to read, she will not stop. It was the foundation of her everyday life. Wake up, eat , read, repeat for effect. Her world was like words and illustrations from a book. She greatly relied on books. If she could not set up a tent, she would search for a book about tents. Fortunately for her, Ponyville's Library is her residence. She works as the librarian for an entire town. Her admirers would visit her and occasionally, requests that she tutor them on any topic that they brought up. Every day was work, and she enjoyed it, save for a few days. She was surrounded with knowledge just a hoof length away.

There were no visitors for the past few hours, so Twilight was reading through a spell book given to her by Princess Celestia. Studying would be a better word.

She wasted no time when she came back home. She flipped open the books and began her studies. As she read, she wrote down notes while keeping her eyes on the pages. The silent atmosphere of the library was interrupted by thumping sounds on the staircase leading to Twilight's bedroom.

"Twilight, a letter from the Princess!" Spike rushed down with a parchment rolled in his hand. Twilight pulled the parchment from Spike's grip with levitation magic and unrolled it to read it's contents.

"Dear Twilight Sparkle, I would like you to study up Elemental-based spells for the next test in two weeks. A mailstallion will be at your residence shortly with an 'item'. Have fun, Princess Celestia" Twilight read the letter and immediately flipped through the book to find anything related to elemental spells.

"Thanks Spike. Would you get me something to drink please?"

"In a jiffy." Spike went into the kitchen.

Spike was a purple and light green "baby dragon" with green scales cascading down to his tail from the top of his head and green eyes. A playful dragon mostly and self-praising at times. Spike was hatched from his egg by Twilight during an entrance examination to Princess Celestia's school for gifted unicorns. That was when she became Princess Celestia's personal student. It was also the time when Spike became a full-sized adult dragon, for a minute, before he shrunk down back to baby size. Not forgetting a broken rooftop. After that incident, Princess Celestia raised Spike in the ways of an assistant before she passed him to Twilight Sparkle, to be her personal assistant, and friend, and live with her. Through the growing years, Spike has formed a very strong relationship with Twilight. Twilight treated him like family and she was a sister figure to him. It would take more than a searing blade to break this solid relationship. And he likes to eat gems. Gems.

"How's orange juice?" He asked. He set the cup on the kitchen table and searched the refrigerator for a drink, but there was no reply from Twilight.

"Uh, Twilight?" He peeked from the kitchen door and saw Twilight's book still rested on the table, but no Twilight. A ball of water flew across the room and splashed on Spike's face, causing him to yelp in shock. He rubbed his eyes and saw Twilight laughing boisterously. Twilight's horn lit and a trail of water started trailing in the air to her horn from a vase of water. The water combined and curled into a sphere at the tip of the horn.

"It's called water bending. A water-type spell." Twilight explained.

"What do you think? Pretty neat huh?"

"I think you can pull a prank with that." Spike suggested. Twilight chuckled at the suggestion and she sent the water sphere back into the vase.

"Too bad I'm not a prankster like you."

"Already about to ace that test. Egghead." Spike jokingly whispered and turned for the kitchen, not noticing that he whispered too loud, another water sphere splashed on him in response to the nick name.

"Egghead, and proud." Twilight raised her head high and announced proudly. Spike raised his hands in defeat and walked back into the kitchen, smiling playfully along the way.

"Alright alright, sorry! I'll get you orange juice, okay?"

Twilight resumed reading the instructions on the pages. She scribbled down more notes before she stood up and charged magic into her horn. Three spheres of water conjured around Twilight's horn, and she started juggling them. There was a knock on the door and Twilight hastily walked to open it. She expected to see a mailstallion when she opened the door, but the only thing she saw was a brown wrapped package on her door step. She levitated it in quickly before she slightly slammed the door.
