Chaz was just sitting at home, when he heard his father's car pulling up the driveway. Opening up the white door to a well manicured lawn, Chaz went to greet the only parent who still cared about him.
Oh my god, another one? Chaz thought to himself as yet again, his father walked home with the all too familiar 'I just got fired' look. "Hey, Dad. Something happen?"
"Oh, hey Chaz. Yeah, I just fired." Seriously? "But don't worry, kiddo, I've found another job in Alberta."
"Moving again?"
"Listen Sport, I know you don't like moving, but we have to do this. Don't worry, this time, I promise that I'll keep this one."
"That's what you said last time." Turning, Chaz walked up the lawn that no longer mattered, through a door that no longer mattered, and into a house that no longer mattered. He knew he would have to pack.
"Chaz!" His Father was calling for him, but it didn't matter anymore. "This time it'll be different!"
Five hours later, Chaz opened up the front, passenger side door of a rusty ford. His dad had to sell the old one to get enough money for the move, and this was on loan from Grandpa James. Chaz's feet wore black Adidas over black socks. He wore baggy, black jeans, with a black belt to hold them up. The belt was unadorned, plain. At five foot ten, the only hint of his strength was his fairly muscular arms slipping out of a baggy, black, logo-less tee-shirt. His small nose had no piercings, neither did his chapped lips. His blue eyes (which he got from his mother) clashed oddly with his native skin, from his father's side. He also had his father's dark brown hair, hanging down to his neck, bangs trimmed to fall just above his eyes. All in all, Chaz was a fairly ordinary looking guy - forgettable, even. In fact, that was just the way he wanted it.
When Chaz was two years old, his mother and father got into a fight. Chaz doesn't remember anything, but his father always talks about how she slept with another guy. This other guy just happened to be the best man at their wedding. He was supposed to be Chaz's godfather. Since then, his dad had always had trouble keeping jobs. During the first few months of elementary school, Chaz tried making friends. Then he had to move. Then he tried to make new friends, and after that he had to move again. A grand total of three months passed before Chaz reached the conclusion that he would never have friends he could keep. So, he started making himself as forgettable as possible. He only ever wore black clothes, and kept his face clean and free of any marks, natural or otherwise. He kept his hair smooth enough to slip through peoples' minds. He never spoke to any schoolmates. He tried to get as close to 75% on every test, even getting answers wrong on purpose, if he thought he needed to lower the mark. He was, to the outside world, a ghost. Just an imprint on the world that didn't even affect it's surroundings. And that was just the way he liked it.
Looking up, Chaz saw the new house. It was a single story duplex, so that would mean having to share the same front and back yards with neighbors. The walls were a lurid peach color, and the lawn was rather patchy. A pure white cat walked up to him and started rubbing against his legs. Ignoring it, Chaz grabbed the single box that held his entire life and took it inside.. Tonight, he would have to sleep on the floor; the movers were bringing the furniture in two days. "Your room is in the basement, Chaz." Walking down the stairs, he saw that he was right beside the laundry room. Great, what if he decides to wash a shirt in the middle of the night? Setting down the box in the bare room, he opened it and started pulling out his favorite books. Consisting mostly of fiction, sci-fi, and fantasy, Chaz had sorted the books and put them against his wall. He then took out the Acer laptop a cousin had given him for his fifteenth birthday. Was that only two months ago? Time takes way to long to pass. He moved the empty box into a corner, then turning the laptop on, he quickly found that his next door neighbors had WiFi. That left only one thing to do.
You see, Chaz had a single friend that he met on YouTube. Or, rather, six friends. Perhaps you know them? They are rather popular on fimfiction. Recently, Chaz actually found this site. He's read quite a few of everybody's works, by now. He's never actually commented, he doesn't have an account yet. But, if you've written a fanfic and posted it here, he's probably read it.
Reading the newest publications in only half an hour is quite the feat, though for Chaz's trained eyes, it was pretty slow. This was what he did everyday, after school. But he was pretty upset, having had to move again.
Suddenly, Chaz heard a faint knocking. Opening his rooms door and looking up the stairs, he realized that the back door was right there. And someone decided to knock. Opening, he was greeted by a young girl, about his age. She had long red hair, covering her left eye, which, judging by her right eye, was a light blue. Her face was coated in skillfully applied make-up, making her look like she could be a super model, without making her look fake. Even Chaz had to admit, she's beautiful.
"Hi, I'm Diane, your next door neighbor," The girl said.
"I'm Chaz."
"Well, Chaz, I brought you a welcome gift. You're not allergic to nuts, are you?"
"No."
"Well, here." Diane handed him a basket full of fruit, homemade cookies (Chaz recognized the shape of several different types of nuts), and a couple small bags of chips. "You look kind of young, do you still go to school?"
"Yeah, I just enrolled at W.C."
"Really? I go there too! Maybe I can show you around! What grade are you in?"
"Grade 10."
"Really? Me too! It's within walking distance, do you want to walk there together tomorrow? At about eight, maybe?"
"Sure."
"Okay, see you tomorrow! Bye!" Diane walked across the backyard lawn, following a path beside the house. No longer distracted by her face, Chaz noticed she was wearing a flowery kimono. Huh. Her eyes didn't look Japanese. Without looking back at him, she opened a door to the same building, though Chaz knew it was a different suite. No longer distracted by her butt, Chaz closed his own door, then brought the gift basket to the kitchen.
