Lightning Strike: His Story

Five seconds to the bell… four… three… two… one!! *Ring!! Ring!! Ring!!* All the students cheered, myself included. It was the last day of flight school, and I, Lightning Strike, had graduated!!

The day I got my Cutie Mark, my parents enrolled me in flight school. I was in Cloudsdale, having a picnic with my parents, and my sister Storm Cloud.

Right as I was finishing my tulip and daisy sandwich, the town bell in Ponyville started ringing, audible even in Cloudsdale. Several families, including my own, rushed down to see what was happening only to find Ponyville overrun by Timberwolves!! My parents started ushering trapped ponies to safety, leaving me and Storm to help any way we could. Noticing a few clouds relatively close, I had a sudden Idea…

I flew over to the clouds, grabbing a darker, rain-filled one. Bringing it directly over the main group of Timberwolves, I began rubbing it against another cloud, charging it up. Feeling the sparks run through it, I bucked it, causing Lightning to flare out at the wolves. Frightened, the Timberwolves retreated, back into the forest, with myself chasing close behind.

As the last of the wolves ran into the forest, one of the lightning bolts hit me, square in the chest. Instead of hurting me, I felt it zap towards my flank, where I felt a tingling sensation.  Looking back, I discovered an image of a storm cloud with lightning coming out of it. I had received my Cutie Mark!!

My parents and sister were elated, upon discovery. Mom and Dad immediately enrolled me in flight school, where I could learn what it meant to be a pegasi.

As I grew into a dashing young colt, I grew in size and strength easily out-flying my classmates, even most of the older pegasi. I entered into the Best Young Flyer competition three years in a row, and received first place the first two years. Come the third year, it looked to be like I would receive first place yet again, but something unexpected happened…

I was in the skies above Canterlot, racing another pegasi named Light Blaze. As I was about to turn the last corner into the home stretch, we were neck and neck, with me just barely ahead. As we entered the turn, there was a great rainbow flash, and a loud boom.

Distracted, I crashed into Light Blaze, and we both fell, tumbling out of control, towards Canterlot. About 20 feet from the hard ground, two gray and white blurs flashed out towards us.

Opening my eyes and discovering I was, in fact, alive an unharmed, I looked up into the face of a white unicorn. We had been saved by two soldiers in the Princesses Royal Guard!!

“Are you two alright? Are you hurt?” the guard holding me inquired.

Light Blaze and I answered in unison “Yes, I’m fine”

“What were you doing above Canterlot in the first place?” the second guard, a Pegasus, asked.

“We were racing in the Best Young Flyer Competition” I answered “When that rainbow flash occurred, I crashed into Light Blaze, and we fell.”

Relaxing a bit, the unicorn said “Next time, try to be more careful. If I and my partner, Sergeant Glyde, hadn’t been here to catch you, this could have ended very badly.”

Smiling, the Pegasus, Sergeant Glyde spoke to the unicorn “Oh come on, Shining Armor, lighten up! I remember when we used to get into trouble as colts! Remember that one time, when we went over to Silver Shine’s and we…”

“Yes, I remember” Shining Armor cut him off. Looking back at us, he said “Run along now, and make sure to stay out of trouble. I wouldn’t want to have to catch you again!”

After that day, I knew in my heart exactly what I wanted to be. I was going to become a Royal Guard!

(Note to the readers: The rainbow flash, mentioned earlier, is Rainbow Dash performing the Sonic Rainboom for the first time. She indirectly helped Lightning receive his Cutie Mark as well as the Mane Six. )
