Begin Day One
A nice day it was. The sun shined down upon the green, lush country side as a slight wind blew across it. A few trees and patches of soil were scattered about the field, but other than that, nothing was really that obscure to be seen.
That is, until a blinding flash of red light erupted across the land. The light faded only to reveal a small colt lying upon a patch of newly scorched grass. His eyes opened and he shot up off of the ground. The ponies face was contorted in a mixture of fear and realization. He tried to stand up on his hind legs, but found he couldn't. Confused, he lifted his hooves to his face and looked down at them in shock. Right where he used to have two dexterous hands, he now had two flat and useless hooves. The colt's face turned from that of shock to that of frustration. He roared in anger and smashed his front hooves on the ground, ripping up the delicate blades of grass in front of him.
A light cracking noise erupted from behind, causing him to spin around in fear to only see a lonely white rabbit. The rabbit was a pure white, the only exception being it's light pink paws and ears. The colt reached out to pet the animal. But the second he made contact, it's eyes became void of all expression and it fell on it's side without a sound. He gasped in shock and picked it up off the ground only to discover that it had no heartbeat and it's breathing had ceased. Being a child, he had never seen any real death before. So naturally he would tear up at the sight of a dead animal. Tears brimmed on his eyelids as he began to sob quietly to himself.
But then he came to another stunning realization; he was mute. He should have noticed it before, but he had been somewhat drowsy after his awakening. Not even a cough or sneeze could be heard from him. The only thing that made any real noise was the sound of his fresh tears hitting the charred grass beneath him. Even then the country side he was currently residing on was deathly silent. Not a rabbit nor a fox scrambled about the plains before him.
A loud noise erupted from behind him again. This time, as he turned around, he saw something spectacular; a sort of thunder storm off in the distance, higher in the sky than anything he had ever seen. It was emanating a beautiful rainbow colored light. But something was off about it. The more he looked at the strange clouds the more peculiar they seemed. But the sudden flash of light and a roar of thunder coming from the cloud snapped him out of his trance. Getting up on his feet (or hooves in this case), he began to slowly stumble towards the direction opposite of the frightening cloud; a forest.
Only a few minutes later and he was just a few yards away from the treeline. The forest looked even more dreary and dark up close. Farther away it only looked a little dark inside the forest. An eerie wind blew along the silent outskirts of the forest. The colt took a careful look into the near pitch black forest, trying to make out anything of danger. Then, suddenly, he heard a loud chomping noise and a crunch. His eyes widened and fear and he slowly turned to the left. A silent gasp left his lips as he watched in horror as a gigantic beast feasted upon the carcass of a dead deer.
Thankfully, the monster had not seen him yet, although he didn't know how it hadn't. Nor did he know how he hadn't seen IT. Yet another thing to be thankful for, though. He started to slowly back away from the snarling beast. But then, as if luck hated him, a loud crack and a sharp pain shot up his foot.
Looking down, he saw what had caused it; a mesquite branch had been blown off one of the trees and landed on the ground behind him. It had been jabbed into his hoof and it was bleeding lightly. He silently howled in pain and doubled over before finally sitting on the ground. And for the second time that day, he cried. As a child, his tolerance for pain was weak and his feelings were not spent.
The monster before him looked up with a scowl, but continued to eat it's dinner. Perhaps it was content with the deer? Perhaps it had grown sympathy for the child? No, that was not the case. It was just waiting. It knew that the poor colt could not leave his current position. So it sat where it was, eating the remainder of the deer's flesh before moving it's terrifying gaze towards the young colt.
He could only stare in fear as the hulking beast moved closer and closer, so close that it could almost taste him. But all of the sudden, a ginormous roar thundered throughout the skies over the forest. The terrifying beast looked up in what looked like fear before backing away and dragging it's last meal back into the underbrush of the forest.
The colt looked relieved, but the only thing keeping him from jumping in the air with joy was the overwhelming pain in his hoof, and the fact that there was still another creature lurking within the forest. It wasn't long after his tears dried away that a strong wind had begun to flow across the rolling hills along the forest's edge. Accompanying it was the moist air and lack of sunlight.
The colt had taken refuge under a grove of bushes, but even that could not protect him for long. He had tried many times to tug the thorn out of his hoof, but painstakingly so, he could not.
So with the weather worsening, his injuries getting more severe, and dangerous creatures on the prowl, the young colt could only hope for the best to come from tomorrow.
If there even was a tomorrow...
In the borderlands between the Griffon Kingdom and Diamond Dominion, no where is safe. The lifeless remains of what came before were strewn about the old, dusty hills of the Grifmond Desert. Among the many creatures inhabiting those plains were the most dangerous of Equis, some capable of killing a half grown dragon in one bite. But there was hope for the many species who had come to settle those wastes. Griffins, Ponies, and Diamond Dogs alike all attempted to settle the area and expand, but alas, the desert remains feral till this day.
And it is for the hope of one settlement's survival that a lone Griffon was sent out into the wastes of the Grifmond Desert to search for water or, even better, send news of their location. This Griffon, named Corvonero, was sent into the dusts for that specific purpose.
But on his journeys, he came across a young filly. About as small as a tyke she was. Corvonero's guess had to be that she was seven, or maybe eight. Either way, it was far too dangerous for the filly to stay out there alone. So he took her with him on his search for water. But what he didn't notice when he had walked away with the filly in tow, was a patch of flowers growing where she had awoken.
So, with her accompanying him, Corvonero started to make his way West, into the Diamond Dominion. They walked for hours and hours. Corvonero was parched and tired, while the little pony stayed as happy and lively as ever. Celestia's Sun drooped lower into the horizon. So as an extra precaution, and to keep the filly safe, Corvonero set up camp on the soft, loose dirt of the Grifmond Desert.
Little was known back then about the many different creatures of that cursed desert, but what they did know was that every single on of them had at least one reason to be life threatening.
Weary and anxious, Corvo (I'm calling him Corvo, don't fucking complain to me about it or I'll lob off your thingy and smack you silly with it.) finally drifted off to sleep.
Only the filly stayed awake during the cold night, bouncing and laughing until sunset...
End Day One
So, guys, what do you think of Day One? Good? Bad? I don't know if I should be proud or ashamed of this fiction, yet. Well, I want to feel proud, but I feel as if I betrayed all of you by doing another fan fiction already.
I hope you guys like this. Just felt like doing something a little different. You know, get my brain working so I could move on back to Friendship And Endless Voids.
