WARNING! SPIKE WILL BE OUT OF CHARACTER. HENCE THE ALTERNATE UNIVERSE TAG. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Song

“Oh Spike…”

“Well, what do you say Rarity?”

“I’m sorry Spike, but I cannot accept. There are many things to take into account here. For one, our age difference. What would the ponies think of me dating someone younger than me? Two, we are both different species. You are a dragon, and I am a pony. Third, what would the ponies think of me when I’m dating a dragon. That is not the norm Spike. When ponies would find out, they would stop buying my products. I would lose all my respect as a fashionista. Lastly, you’re eventually going to grow too big to stay in Ponyville. Where would we go then? I can’t live with dragons, they do horrible things to ponies. And I could never leave Sweetie Belle behind. I’m sorry Spike, but I just want to continue being friends.”

Spike started to cry the hardest he’s ever cried. He could not believe what his love told him. His heart sank, his breathing slowed down. Rarity, seeing what she caused tried to hug Spike and comfort him, but Spike pushed her away with more force than he would have liked. Anger started to build up inside of him. His eyes turned crimson red, smoke was coming out of his nostrils. He slowly rose from the ground, one leg then the other. He looked at Rarity, his love, gone completely. Now replaced with unsatisfying rage, he spoke, hatred in his voice, scaring Rarity.

“How could you think of me like that!? It seems when I’m your friend you’re fine with those possible problems. How would you like if told the ponies that I am the one that helped you make their dresses and suits? How would you feel then? HUH?”

Rarity started backing away from Spike until she baked herself into a corner. She couldn’t believe how Spike was acting, she only wished it would stop. She couldn’t stand seeing Spike this angry. She feared for her life. She wanted to run away. But she didn’t. She was too afraid Spike might hurt her. She continued to listen to him shaking in fear in the corner.

“I could ruin you right now. But I won’t because it would only make me as terrible as you! And the age difference! You know dragons mature at a different rate than ponies. I may seem like a teenager in dragon years, but in pony years I'm not far from your age. If other ponies found out! Who cares about them? All of our friends would accept us. And eventually when the ponies find out that Princess Celestia approves, they will slowly start to accept us as well. By the time I am too big to live in Ponyville you’ll be dead. I grow much slower than ponies. So you’d never have to worry about that! Leave Sweetie Belle behind?! I would never even ask you to do that. I know how important Sweetie Belle is to you. And I could not leave her behind either, I have fun playing with her and the rest of the Cutie Mark Crusaders!”

Spike started walking towards Rarity. There was no escape now. Rarity readied herself for the worst. Spike was now standing right in front of her.

“Have you ever noticed how every other stallion you’ve dated never cared as much about you as I have!? They only wanted access to your marehood.”

Spike looked at Rarity dead in her eyes. Tears of disappointment started forming around his eyes.

“I hope you find someone in your life who loves you as much as I do, because you just lost my love!”

With that Spike ran outside. He slammed the door as he left. Rarity stayed in the corner, unable to move. She was paralyzed in fear.

(end song here)

How could Spike get that angry? I never thought he would take it that bad. In his defense, I did go overboard with my rejection. But still, he over reacted... He is right though, I have been dating stallions even though I knew in the end they only wanted access to my marehood. Oh god. How could I do this to Spike… He has every right to hate me right now. I need to time to think about all of this.

Spike was running towards the library. His rage calmed down, instead he was crying. Spike arrived at the library. He slammed the door open and ran upstairs to the bedroom. He layed in his bed. Twilight ran upstairs after Spike. She opened the door to the see her ‘son’ crying on his bed.

“What’s wrong Spike?”

“Rarity rejected me!” Spike said with trouble.

“I’m so sorry Spike.” Twilight hugged Spike as tight as she could.

Spike told Twilight everything Rarity told him, and how he reacted.

“SHE SAID WHAT? How could she say that to you? You’re the perfect stall…dragon for her. Don’t take it personally, she doesn’t know what she lost.”

“Thanks Twilight, I can always count on you to help me. Unlike some other mare.”

“I’ll always be here for you Spike. I’m going to give you the next few days off you need to recover. Feel free to talk to me at any time you need Spike. I’m here to help Spike.”

"Thanks. I think I'm going to have supper then go to bed."

"Sure thing Spike. I'll be downstairs reading if you need anything."

Spike went downstairs to the kitchen and filled a bowl with gems. He went back upstairs and ate in bed.

I just want this day to end!

After he finished eating, Spike attempted to sleep. But it was to no avail. He could not get those awful words Rarity told him out of his head. All he could do was lye there hopping he would eventually fall asleep. A few hours later Twilight came in, ready to go to bed, when she noticed Spike. Spike had a look of pure pain and betrayal. Twilight could not help but feel terrible herself. She’s never seen Spike so depressed in her life.

"How are you feeling Spike?"

"Horrible... Rarity's right, there is no possible way it would work out. I only told her those words because I wanted it to be possible. In the end she is right though. I don't know what to do anymore Twilight!"

Twilight planted herself next to Spike. She placed her hoof on Spike’s back, and started to rub it up and down in a motherly way. Spike started to smile; he enjoyed Twilight’s motherly company. She always knew how to make him feel better in these moments. Twilight continued to comfort him until he eventually fell asleep. She placed his blanket over him, and kissed him on the forehead goodnight. She climbed into her bed and went to sleep as well.

Twilight woke up to the sound of crying the next morning. She noticed Spike had his head in his pillow, crying as hard as last night.

“Spike what’s the matter?”

“I can’t get Rarity’s rejection out of my head. Those words are like daggers, and they’re digging deeper into my heart. Why did she not accept my offer Twilight? I would always be there to care for her. I would always be there for her, no matter the case. I would be there when she’s sick, when she’s sad, happy, mad, depressed, anything that comes up. I truly loved her Twilight. It wasn’t some silly crush. And now there is no chance for me to be her special-stallion. She made that clear.” Spike had ran out of tears. His eyes were red and puffy.

“Spike I want you to stay home. I don’t want you going outside, I don’t want you to accidentally run into Rarity. If you need anything Spike, Anything just let me know. Do you understand me Spike?”

“Yes Twilight”

“Good. Let’s go get some breakfast, that should help you clear your mind.”

“Sounds great!”

Twilight and Spike walked downstairs into the kitchen. Spike helped Twilight get breakfast ready.

“What should we have for breakfast today?”

“I’m in the mood for eggs and toast with some of Applejack’s delicious apple jelly. How about you Spike?”

“That sounds good to me.”

“Alright, I’ll get the eggs ready and put the toasts in the toaster. Can you please get the table ready for us Spike? My number one assistant.”

“Sure thing!” Spike felt a little better after hearing Twilight’s comment.

Spike had the table ready in only a minute.

I bet even Rainbow Dash couldn’t get a table ready that fast!

Spike walked back to the kitchen just in time to help Twilight put the eggs and toast on the plates. He carried both plates to the table. They sat down and started to eat.

“What do you have planned today Twilight?”

“Well I need to check the mail, hopefully my book has arrived. After that I am going to help Applejack collect her apples from the trees. And this afternoon I have to do an inventory check and pick up anything I need. That leaves tonight free to spend time with you Spike.”

“You, having free time. That’s a good one Twilight you almost had me there.”

“I’m serious! I always like to have one day a week where I can have some free time to do whatever I want. And today I decided to spend time with you.”

“Thanks Twilight, I appreciate that. I need all the support I can get. By the way Twilight could I go with you to Sweet Apple Acres? I know you said you wanted me to stay home, but I think collecting apples will help my mind.”

“Sure Spike, I’ll just use the teleporting spell on the both of us, that way we won’t have to worry about any ‘unwanted encounters’.”

Twilight and Spike finished their breakfast. They cleaned the dishes and walked into the living room.

“Spike get ready to leave, I’m going to check the mail and then we’re going.”

“Alright, I’ll be back in a second.”

Twilight checked the mail.

“Yes yes yes yes yes! My book finally came in!”

Twilight ran back inside and put the book on the table. Just at that moment Spike walked downstairs.

“Are you ready to go Spike?”

“I sure am.”

Twilight surrounded Spike and herself in purple hora. With a poof they arrived in front of Sweet Apple Acres. It was a beautiful day. The sun was big and bright. There were no clouds in sight. The wind was gently blowing. The apple trees were moving to the wind's beat. They were greeted by Applejack.

“Howdy Twilight and Spike.”

“Hi Applejack can I speak with you for a minute? Spike why don’t you get the baskets ready to collect the apples?”

“Yes mom.” Spike said in mocking yet fun voice.

Twilight and Applejack walked to the barn.

“I hope you don’t mind that I brought Spike. He asked me if he could come to help clear his mind. He asked Rarity to be his special-mare, but she crudely declined him. He has been feeling depressed ever since. So please be gentle on him.”

“Sure thing Twilight. Poor Spike. That Rarity needs to learn how to be careful on what she says… Anyway it’s a good thing Spike’s here, I’m sure Apple Bloom would love to play with him after were done. That should help cheer him up!”

“That sounds great. I have to do an inventory check and pick up anything I need this afternoon. It would be great to have Spike do something he enjoys while I do that. I do need him back by supper though. I promised him I would spend my free time with him tonight.”

“Can do!”

Twilight and Applejack walked back to the acres of apple trees. Spike had already finished preparing the baskets.

“What took you guys so long? I was done ages ago.” Spike had a grin on his face.

“Good for you Rainbow Dash.” Twilight chuckled a little.

“Alright ya’ll let’s get started.”

Spike and Twilight started putting the baskets underneath the trees, ready for Applejack to kick he apples off the tree. It only took them three hours to do the entire acres. They started walking back to the barn, proud of a good day’s work.

“You did great out there kiddo.”

“Thanks Applejack. It was hard work, but it felt good.”

“Twilight do you mind if I speak to Spike privately for a second?”

“Go ahead Applejack I’ll just return these apples to the barn and I’ll wait for you two there.”

“Thanks Twilight.”

Applejack guided Spike off to the side behind some trees for privacy.

“Spike I’m sorry to hear about what happened yesterday, Twilight told me everything.”

“Oh, yeah.” Tears were forming around Spike’s eyes.

“She made it clear she would never want to go out with me. She’s afraid that if anypony found out, it would ruin her ‘reputation as a fashionista and ruin her business’, just because I’m a dragon. And she’s right it would never work out.”

“Come ‘er Spike.”

Applejack gave Spike a friendly hug. Spike returned it immediately.

“Thanks Applejack, I needed that.”

“You’re welcome Spike. And Spike feel free to come over anytime. Even if it’s just to talk, I’m here buddy, and I’m sure Apple Bloom wouldn’t mind a play buddy.”

“Thanks. I will keep that mind.”

“We better get to the barn before Twilight starts to worry.”

Spike and Applejack arrived at the barn only a few minutes later. They were greeted by a nervous Twilight.

“What took you guys so long? I need to go soon otherwise my whole schedule will be off!”

“Sorry Twilight, I was just giving Spike a pep talk.”

“Alright. Now Spike I’ve got to go do my inventory, Applejack said you could stay here and play with Apple Bloom until supper. I will return then to pick you up.”

“Sounds good Twilight.”

“Bye Applejack I’ll see you later. And thanks for helping with Spike.”

“It’s mah pleasure. Bye Twilight.”

Twilight teleported back to the library with a poof.

“I’ll go get Apple Bloom Spike, wait here for a second.”

“Sure thing.”

A few moments later Applejack came back with an excited Apple Bloom.

“Hey Spike! Are you ready to go an adventure to help me find my Cutie Mark?”

“I’m always ready Apple Bloom.”

“Just promise me you two will stay within Sweet Apple Acres.”

“We promise!”

“Alright. Now you two run off and have fun I’ll be in barn sorting out the apples if you need me.”

“Alright sis.”

Spike and Apple Bloom started walking towards the gardens.

“What do you have in mind today to get your Cutie Mark?”

“I was thinkin we could try breaking wooden boards with our hooves like the professionals do.”

“I don’t think that’s a good idea Apple Bloom, you could hurt yourself pretty badly.”

“I know! We could create an obstacle course near the barn. I might earn my Cutie Mark as professional athlete!”

“Sounds good to me.”

Apple Bloom and Spike walked back towards the barn. Spike set up the course. He used some rocks, some dead branches and the hurdles Applejack would use to train for the rodeo.

“Are you ready Apple Bloom?”

“Ready!”

“On three, one, two, Three!”

Apple Bloom ran off, leaving a cloud of dust behind her. She easily made her way around the rocks. She jumped over every branch. When she got to the hurdles, she started feeling nervous. She arrived at the first one. She took a mighty leap, and she barely made it over. She felt a little more nervous. She soon arrived at the hurdle. Again she took a mighty leap. This time the end of her hoof touched the hurdle. Her nerves continued acting up. She had made it to the third and final hurdle. She took one last mighty leap, only this time she didn’t have enough speed built up to make it. Her back leg hit the hurdle and she fell forward. She landed on her stomach. Spike ran over checking on her.

“Oh my Celestia, are all right Apple Bloom?” Spike said concern in his voice.

“I’m fine Spike. That was AWESOME! Let’s do that again!”

“I think you should take a break after falling like that. You did great otherwise.”

“You really think so!” Apple Bloom wore a smile from cheek to cheek.

“I do. I think you may have a future as an athlete. Speaking of an athlete, let’s go ask Applejack if she would like help with her apple sorting.”

“Maybe I’ll get my Cutie Mark as a professional apple inspector.”

They walked to the barn and met up with Applejack.

“Hey sis, Spike and I were wonderin if you would like us to help you sort those apples.”

“Why aren’t you two off playin?”

“We were sis. I asked Spike to make me an obstacle course, so that maybe I would get my Cutie Mark as a professional athlete. But I tripped and fell on the third hurdle. Before you ask I’m fine. Spike suggested that you might like some help. So that got me thinking, I could get my Cutie Mark as a professional apple inspector!”

“I would like the help. Thanks guys.”

The two set themselves up beside Applejack.

“If you see any bruised ones, throw them in the bucket over there. We feed those to the pigs.” Applejack said pointing at the bucket.

“Okay dokey sis.”

With the three gone to work it only took them one hour to go through every apple.

“Thanks for the help you two. As a token of mah appreciation, feel free to have a delicious apple on the house.”

“Thanks Applejack.”

Spike looked at through the beautiful apples. He saw two perfect apples. They had no bruises and they were the perfect shade of red.

“Would it be alright if I took one for Twilight as well?”

“Sure thing Spike.”

Apple Bloom and Spike enjoyed their apples.

“That was the best apple yet Applejack.”

“Thanks Spike, I’m glad ya’ll liked it.”

It was now almost suppertime for the average pony. The three were leaving the barn when all of a sudden they heard a familiar voice coming closer and closer.

“Oh Applejack I just simply must buy another jar of apple jelly. It was simply devine… Oh. Hi Spike, Apple Bloom.”

“Oh… Hi Rarity.”

“How have you been doing Spike?”

“Oh now you care about me! What about yesterday, it seemed you didn’t care about my feelings then!”

“That’s not true Spike…”

“Save it Rarity! You might want to continue to stay as friends, but I can’t just be friends with you Rarity. So get that in your head!”

Spike couldn’t hold his tears back any longer. He ran towards the library as fast as he could. Just as Spike was out of view, there was a bright flash of light. Twilight just arrived at the scene.

“Hey Applejack I’m here to pick up Spike… Rarity what are you doing here?”

“I just came by to buy a jar of apple jelly from Applejack. It is simply devine…”

Twilight and Applejack each slapped Rarity on the cheek.

“What was that for!?”

“Are you that full of yourself Rarity!? Yah broke Spike’s heart and you think you can just casually talk to him? He’s depressed, you permanently broke his heart Rarity!”

“What? Spike? He only had a crush on me, there isn’t any true love behind it.”

“Are you kidding me Rarity!?” Twilight shouted.

“He told me himself he was truly in love with you. He said himself it wasn’t a silly crush. How could you think that Rarity! You really need to open up your eyes and notice other ponies’ feelings. You may not ‘love’ him, but that doesn’t give you the right to say all those things you told him yesterday!”

“I do love Spike! But it would never work out.”

“Tell me Rarity what wouldn’t work out?”

“Well first off were different species.”

“That isn’t that uncommon. There have tales of dragons and ponies living together.”

“Fine, but what about our age difference?”

“You know deep down Rarity that dragons mature differently than ponies. Spike may be a young dragon, but in pony years he’s only a couple years younger than us.”

“But what about the other ponies? They would lose respect for me as a fashionista and would stop coming to my business.”

“That’s not true Rarity. They would accept you two. Look at Lyra and Bon-Bon they’re both females and they are openly dating. The ponies still respect them even though it isn’t the ‘norm’.”

“You really think the other ponies wouldn’t care?”

“I know it Rarity. You need to give it a chance, otherwise you’ll never find out. Do you want to go on living not knowing the answer to that question?”

“You’re right Twilight. I’ll never know if I don’t try. I’ll visit Spike at the library tomorrow. I’ll tell him I’ve reconsidered and I would love to go out with him.”

“That sounds like a great idea. I’ll make sure Spike is home tomorrow for your arrival. Good luck Rarity, Spike needs you to be there for him.”

“Thanks Twilight. I won’t fail like last time.”

Spike couldn’t hold his tears back any longer. He ran towards the library as fast as he could. When he arrived he slammed the door open. He slammed it shut and ran upstairs. He didn’t care whether Twilight was there or not.

I thought I could get over you Rarity but I can’t. My love for you is still there. No matter what I do I can’t get rid of it. She made it clear she had no feelings for me. How am I supposed to continue to live with these feelings knowing she doesn’t share them back? How am I supposed to continue living in this world if I have to be around you as ‘only friends’?  My heart won’t allow me to be just friends. My broken heart wants more. My broken heart now non repairable. There seems to be only one option. Suicide. But it needs to be something I can easily hide from Twilight and the others. I know a vial of poison. That should work. But the only pony in possession of such powerful ingredients is Zecora. I’ll sneak out tonight after Twilight falls asleep and hope I can sneak into Zecora’s place and make a poison.

Spike was suddenly interrupted by a bright flash, it was Twilight.

“Spike are you alright? Applejack told me what happened.”

“I’m feeling better Twilight.” Spike lied.

“That’s good to hear. I’m just glad you’re home safe. I was worried about you.” Twilight hugged Spike chocking him.

“Twilight. Twilight you’re chocking me!”

“Sorry Spike, I just worry about you, you’re my closest family I have at the moment.”

“I love you Twilight.”

“I love you too Spike. Well Spike I’m still going to spend tonight with you like I promised.”

“That sounds great.”

“I don’t know about you Spike but after all that work I’m starved. I’m going to go make something”

“I’m starving as well. After the hard work this morning, then playing with Apple Bloom, then the incident with you know who.”

“What are you in the mood for Spike?”

“I’m in the mood for some sapphires. What about you Twilight?”

“I think I’m going to make myself a Daffodil salad.”

They both walked downstairs. While Twilight prepared her salad, Spike prepared the table. When he was done he joined Twilight in the kitchen. He got a bowl and filled it with the last of his sapphires.

“Whoa there Spike, you must be really hungry.” Twilight said snickering.

“Ha ha Twilight. You need to work on your jokes.” Spike said rolling his eyes.

“Well I thought it was funny.”

They both took their bowls and sat down at the table. This was the last night Spike would see Twilight, he was determined to make it the best night ever.

“So Spike what would you like to do after supper?”

“I’m thinking we should start reading your new book together. It looks interesting.” Spike said looking at the book.

“You’re actually interested in one of my books?”

“Believe it or not yes.”

“Wow Spike, it took you forever to get interested in the most fun pastime; reading.”

“Yeah yeah, let me have it.”

“No… I won’t. I’ll just say I Told You you’d find reading fun eventually.”

“Can we just start reading before I change my mind for another ten years?”

“Sure thing Spike.”

They deposited their dished in the sink.

“I’ll clean those later Spike. Let’s get reading! I’m so excited!”

They sat down on the couch. Spike sat on Twilight’s lap. He could stay there forever. He loved spending alone time with Twilight, his ‘mom’. The book they were reading was titled, ‘The Magic of Friendship’ by Twilight Sparkle. It was a book Twilight Sparkle published over a month ago with the Princess’ permission of course. It was a book written based on Twilight’s reports on the magic of friendship.

They read for two hours before stopping.

“I’m getting tired Twilight, I’m going to bed.”

“Me too, I’m just glad the book is perfect so far.”

The two walked upstairs. They both brushed their teeth and flossed. They then made their way to their respective beds.

Spike waited for Twilight to fall. Only a few minutes he heard a sound that was familiar to him, Twilight was snoring. Spike quietly snuck out of bed. He opened and shut the bedroom door quietly. He managed to get outside without alerting Twilight. He ran towards Zecora’s house in the Everfree forest. He took the long way around to avoid being seen by Fluttershy. He arrived at Zecora’s house. He noticed a note on the door.

Out to get flowers in the forest. Will be back shortly.

Thank Celestia, this makes things much easier.

Spike tried opening the door but it was locked. He noticed an open window. He looked inside making sure the coast was clear. He jumped in and started looking through her books. One book caught his attention. How to make sure your potion successfully works. Tips and Tricks. Spike opened the book, the first sentence caught his attention. It read With any potion you must not add more potassium (K) than required. Adding too much potassium (K) could potentially kill the pony drinking it.

I can create a poison by adding an extreme amount of potassium.

Spike chose to make the first potion that contained potassium he saw.

Here we go. And what a coincidence it happens to be a green coloured potion.

Spike followed the instructions to the last word.

Now to turn it into poisonous substance.

Spike poured all of the potassium from the beaker.

I hope that’s enough. There done!

Spike poured the ‘poison’ into an empty vial. Just as Spike finished he heard hoof steps.

Oh no! Zecora’s almost home. Where’s that open window?

Spike quickly put the poison in his ‘pocket’. Zecora was at the front door now. Just as she started to unlock the door Spike found the open window and jumped out. He ran into the forest and hid behind a tree.

“What was that noise?” Zecora said as she jumped from shock.

“It must have been the wind.”

Zecora entered her house. She could not believe what she saw. There were books everywhere, beakers and vials all over the tables and floors. She saw there was an open window. She ran up to it, looking around to see if anyone was still there.

“Why would someone touch my chemicals, it is not very practical.”

That was close. Luckily I found that window on time.

Spike was walking towards Ponyville. Thoughts were racing through his mind.

“This is it Spike, everything is ready.”

But what about your friends Spike? You’ll have to leave them behind.

“I may have leave the others behind, but at least I won’t have to suffer knowing that Rarity doesn’t love me anymore.”

But you’re friends are here to help you through this Spike. You’ll get over it eventually.

“Eventually is too long! I want to end the suffering now!”

Only you can stop yourself before it’s too late Spike, make the right decision.

“I don’t know what to chose anymore. One hand I could go through with it and end my suffering, but I would lose my friends. On the other, I could get over it after many years and I wouldn’t have to leave my friends behind. I have to make my decision quickly before someone catches me.”
