Chap. 0 “A Prologue, Yay!”
7:30 p.m. is the time on the television as the announcer pulls the envelope out of the box.
“And the winner is…Arty Ballens!!!” the anouncer on TV exclaims.
*click*
“Well, that was the most useless 3 minutes of my life ever,” said a redhead twenty-year-old chick who was dressed in the most garnish punk style clothing I’ve ever had the displeasure to see. Well you get used to seeing such trashy things when you have to live in the crapiest part of the ‘Greatest City on Earth!’ I’m fed up with this hole-in-wall little place, so I do the sensible thing, leave.
As I walk through the crowed bar I hear the boisterous sounds of the patrons die down as none of them have (or will ever) win the lottery. The cold winter air assaulted my skin as I left the warm safety of the bar. I keep looking over my shoulder at every corner to make sure that there is nobody following me. I sigh as I remember why I decided to move here. Stupid computer software company that pays good, I could’ve stayed on the safer area of the city where there aren’t news reports about murders every morning and night. I couldn’t though there just wasn’t enough job openings for their main building.
“John, if you really want to work for us you’ll have to start at the dock-side building .” the job interviewer told me.
“But that’s where all the idiots and ganger-banger wannabes hang out, not intelligent human beings that have master’s degrees in computer programming,” I tried to reason.
“We are lacking hard workers down there, so unless you want to be out of a job I suggest you take the position,” he explained.
“Fine. I guess it can’t be as bad as they say right?” I asked.
“No, it’s a lot worse.”
And now I live here, in my rundown apartment on the ‘beach’ side. Beach meaning right next to the most polluted part of any water system in the world, literally. Welcome to East St. Louis, Hell on Earth.
