Twilight grumbled to herself, at herself! Not but 4 minutes and 27 seconds had passed since she last checked the clock after she woke from the same night terrors that plagued her mind. Every single night, every single time she tried to get some sleep she would snap awake, coated in sweat and gasping for the cool nights air to sooth the fires in her mind. It was always this way, ever since she had returned from the Crystal Empire.
"What is it!"
She asked herself this question every time. What is it that keeps her from sleep, from clear thoughts, from having good times with her friends. True, physically, she was fine. 12 days without more than a few seconds sleep at a time would kill most ponies, but she isn't most ponies.
She is Twilight Sparkle, most powerful none sentient being since the times of the great Star Swirl! The body is no problem to her, she could fuel herself on magic alone for months at a time. The mind, though...
The mind was more complex. She was finding it harder and harder to focus on even the most important tasks. At times she would forget her own name, then suddenly flashback to unimportant times in her past. Without the rest of sleep her mind was snapping.
And she was snapping.
"Who shouts at Fluttershy?"
That was the big thing at the moment. The oh so important friendship problem she had to solve, then send a letter to the princess. She had been helping Fluttershy organize the bunnies into burrows...
"Ok, um, now split the bunnies into the correct warrens, and then into there respective families."
Rabbits of white were everywhere. Hopping over each other, running round each other and trying very hard not to be pulled into the air by the purple lights being emitted from there mistresses friend.
"Look, Fluttershy, this would be much easier if you had put them in cages instead of 'asking' them to hop on over to Magic Meadows, which if I may add, is not the best place for the creatures in question considering its proximity to Ponyville and their rather infamous ability to over breed. They could start an infestation!"
Twilight spoke as calmly as she could while trying to catch and sort a good few hundred rabbits into their respective groups
"Oh Twilight, you know my view on cages and collars, all animals should be free to roam where they like."
"Yes, I know. But maybe you should have considered it for this particular situation. Anyway, you still didn't tell me how you intend to stop them overpopulating...again!"
Fluttershy stiffened slightly, something wasn't quite right with Twilight. She had adopted a tone of...well...malice. She was also struggling with a task that she would normally consider to easy for her 'vast' intellect.
"Um, Twilight, are you oka-"
"Yes!"
"Oh, ok."
Fluttershy retreated behind her mane as Twilight went back to sorting the bunnies. She grunted as she charged her horn until small sparks of energy arced of the twisted keratin. As she released the energy, each bunny was hoisted into the air and quickly divided and sub-divided based on there genetic makeup. Once they were all configured, Twilight lowered them towards the ground.
"Ha! I knew I could do it! It was a simple job of lining my magical flux matrix with the rabbits genetic core data stored in their brain cells and then pumping sub-power kinetic energy into the bulk of their tissue, effectively creating magnets. Easy as-"
The Rabbits scattered as soon as Twilight released the spell. Instead of moving to the pre-scented burrows, they began to run amok again.
"OH FOR FUCKS SAKE! Stupid, stupid, stupid rabbits! Learn to do what your told to do and get in the Celestia damned holes!"
Twilight rounded on the quivering form of Fluttershy, fire burning in her eyes!
"And what about you, huh! You just stand there and laugh while I try my hardest to help you!"
"I wasn't laughing Twilight."
Fluttershy was backing away from the raging mare, her wings churned against the air in fear, ready to flee the 'predator'.
"Don't pretend! You could have helped at any time! You and your 'special' talent should have been able to herd them in no time, but no, you do nothing but order me what to do! You know what, go fuck yourself Fluttershy! Go fucking fuck yourself!"
That had been it, she snapped and chased of one of her friends. Fluttershy had left in fits of tears, but all Twilight could feel was anger. No remorse. Just pure unadulterated anger towards her most delicate of friends. She felt it now, for sure. But it was to late, her friends, or ex-friends, had heard about her brutality. Before she knew it, Twilight was back to being the recluse mare living in a library.
Maybe they worried about her, but she doubted it.
She could of course go tell her friends about the parasitic dreams which sucked her off all emotions. She could tell them of her lack of sleep. But what would they think? They would think she was weak. They would think she was in danger. Then the princess would hear.
Before she could think, she would be locked in a mental institute and pumped full of drugs, then left to rot, forgotten, by everypony.
That couldn't happen!
She would sort this out.
She would control her emotions.
She would focus her thoughts.
She would repair her friendship.
She would sit with Fluttershy and cry as she made amends.
But first she would need to sleep.
"I can't get no sleep."
A shining teardrop hit the floor.
Authors note!
Ok, so this is the first chapter (possibly only chapter, depending on response) of Insomnia. This note is mostly hear to talk about the use of "Fuck". I used Fuck instead of Buck in this fic because I feel that Buck feels to light-hearted for the intended mood. Thanks for taking your time to read. If you spot any errors or want to make any constructive criticism, please feel free to leave a comment. Thanks for reading!
