Chapter 2: The Portal

Adumar stood inside a room that was hidden from the rest of Stormwind Keep. King Varian has given him a briefing of the assignment. He is to go through a portal that his mages will conjure, and search for any signs of life; then find and reason with any locals (if possible, find a city and reason with any kings or queens); any Horde that is to be encountered with is to be killed on sight; and of course the main objective: Find Prince Anduin.

Varian has also given him a missive to give to any rulers he comes across to request assistance to finding his son.

To whomever that is to read this,

By order of King Varian Wrynn of Stormwind City, this champion, Adumar, has been chosen to be sent to this land on a mission. A mission to find the king’s son: *Prince Anduin.** He can be trusted and is one of the best we have.*

Champion Adumar, in service of the Alliance, slayer of Deathwing the Destroyer, Champion of the Frozen Wastes, and goes by many other titles; is a very skilled warrior and a fit champion. He is by himself and we have one request…

That request is your assistance.

We can make contact via: portal; from a scroll that Warrios has on possession. The King of Stormwind, Varian will be ready to make an acquaintance whenever you are ready.

The King is offering a one-hundred and fifty-thousand gold reward for the safe return of his son.

We appreciate your assistance, and hope the safe return of the Prince.

Adumar was prepared. He was ready. He was determined to bring, Prince Anduin back to his father alive and safe.

“Do you have everything you want to bring, Adumar?” asks King Varian. He has been at his side this whole time. He made sure that his champion had everything he needed; potions, extra weapons, ammo, food, water, etcetera.

“Yes, your Majesty.” he replies. “Everything I need is in my bag.” He has been looking at the spot where the portal will appear, a little nervous only because he is being sent on a rescue mission to find the king’s son. The King’s freaking son!

“I have faith in you, Adu.” Varian says, trying to send Adumar the point on why he is being sent. “You are one of the best Warriors of the Alliance I know. You've come back alive from missions that are suicidal. You have claimed land, reasoned with locals, slain beasts that were trying to conquer the world. I know you can do this. This is why I chose you, my friend.”

“Thanks, Varian.” replys the champion, with a smile on his face he turns to Varian and puts his hand on his shoulder. “I’ll bring Anduin back. Alive. I promise.”

Varian nods. “When you bring him back, I’ll be waiting to have a drink with you. We will celebrate. I will make sure you will be remembered for everything you have done.”

A minute later, a mage, Siltin Calmortin, came forward. “Are we ready?” he asks.

Adumar turns toward the mage in question and replies. “Yes. I am ready to venture through the portal, and find Prince Anduin.”

Siltin reaches into a pack under his robe. The item in particular was a white scroll with a portal symbol on it. “Use this when you need to return, or if you come across any royalty that might want to visit and reason with King Varian.”

He takes the scroll and puts it in his bag. “Understood.”

“Let’s get started!” Calmortin shouts to his assistants. They gather around the middle of the room, where the portal will show up. They get into formation and they began the ritual.

Calmortin’s hands start to glow in a blue aura, and soon his assistants do the same. Sounds start to fill the room as the ritual progresses; you can hear the chanting of the mages in the room. You can hear a “WRRRRRRRRR” sound and static echo through each and every corner of the room. After around a minute there was a loud crackling sound, followed by a large bright flash of light in the room. You could feel the arcane energy in the air.

When the light clears, the mages are exhausted; panting, gasping for air, breathing heavily; but in the very middle of them was a shimmering portal. Trees could be seen on the other side.

“Success!” shouts a very excited mage.

Calmortin comes walking toward Varian and Adumar. “It is complete. You may go through when ready, but I must warn you – the portal will close behind you. There will be no contact to or from the other side whatsoever.” Siltin stops in front of him. “We are all counting on you; Good Luck, champion.” He gives a salute and walks toward the doors.

Adumar walks toward the portal, but just before walking through he turns to Varian. “Fare you well, Varian.” And he disappeared through the portal.

“Serve with honor, champion. Serve with honor.”

Meanwhile, at Canterlot Castle…

Princess Celestia was having a peaceful lunch with her sister – Princess Luna. They were having a nice conversation back and forth. Until, a chill ran down their spines.

“…want to concur with you, dear si-” Celestia didn’t even get to finish her sentence. “Did you feel that, Lu-Lu?”

“I did, Tia. A strange magical force we felt.” Luna replies.

“It felt like it came from the Everfree Forest.” Says Celesita; with a hint of worry in her voice.

“What should we do, Tia? Send some guards to investigate?” asks her sister.

“No. I’ll send my student, Twilight Sparkle and her friends to investigate.” Replies Celesita. “I don’t want the guards to supplant, them. Yet. It could just be a disturbance in the magic field around Equestria.”

“What ever thou say, Tia.” Luna says. “I agree sending the Elements of Harmony over, since they have more experience.”

“I will send a letter immediately.” Says Celesita, who already summoned a scroll and quill with her magic.

***

Dear Twilight Sparkle,

My most faithful pupil, I must inform you of a disturbance in the Everfree Forest. A strange magical force was felt just moments ago and we (Luna and I) wish for you and your friends to investigate. Report back your findings to me; and please, stay safe.

Your mentor,

Princess Celestia

Celestia closed the scroll; her horn glowed and the letter disappeared in a flash of light.

“I pray we aren’t in trouble.”
