Chapter 3- Spud

Previous Chapter

Authors note: This chapter is written from the point of Spud.

Typing away at my computer, sitting like a human did, I checked my watch to see the time. Only, it wasn't my shiny silver watch that caught my eye, it was the scratch that was gleaming red and my wrist. Obviously, it was from when that thug who is now in the cells, thanks to that poor mare with the tangled mane. I knew who she was, Rarity the rape victim. Everyone discriminates her for leaving her friend, but what she did was very noble, and basically pony nature.

The scratch on my hand stung like a needle, so I decided to find a sticky plaster of some sort. I got up from my sticky hot seat, and trotted down stairs. It was a fairly hot day today, enough to make my mousy brown coat turn darker, drenched with sweat. Then again, I'm not very good with heat.

I got down to reception, where the 1st aid kit was kept, behind the receptionist, Ladyworks. She gave me the usual fake smile, and the traditional reception greeting.
"Welcome to Manehattan police and crime investigators, or PCI for short. How can we help?"
"Cut the crap, Lady. I need a sticky plaster, right now. See this wound, huh? I got this, from fighting a highly ranked thief, while saving a damsel in distress. While you sit on your flat flank all day, tipping your head to the side occasionally and chanting off your stupid little greeting. That's not work at all, that's-"

"Spud!" Came a slightly familiar voice from the door. I turned around in shock, to see Rarity, her mane now brushed. The look on her face showed disappointment, and she was holding up the card I gave her with stiff hooves.
"Oh hi, Rarity" I began. "So.....you did come? You wanna come up to my office?"
She gave me a displeased "mmph" and trotted up the stairs with me, shooting a sympathetic glance at Ladyworks.
Once we got up the stairs and into my office, she gave me a look as if to say "well?"

I took the hint, and told it to her bluntly. "That, was my ex"
"I-uh, I'm so sorry" she replied. I jumped inside of my fur. Rarity, apologize? I hadn't know her for very long, but I knew this just wasn't her.
"Uh, yeah, anyways, the job?" I asked, trying to avoid the subject.
"Oh, right." She continued, showing a hint of disinterest in her voice. "What's in it for me?"
"Well, Rarity, yesterday you showed tactic in stopping him, even without thinking, also, you defended yourself well against Equestrians most wanted rape victims. That's why you're here. I'm currently the detective in charge of hunting them down, and unmasking them. Rumor has it they also hold a huge amount of stolen goods from victims. I need you, Rarity to be my partner. With your help, I'm sure we can stop the rapists! Plus, revenge is sweet yes?" I gasped, in almost one breath. As I said that last part, a picture of Ladyworks flashed through my head.

The pupils in Rarity's dilated, and she let a small gasp escape her lips. Silence filled the room.

It was a silence that seemed to last forever. I sat there, watching Rarity stare blankly in to the void behind me. I wanted to know what was going on inside her head, but she was so hard to read.

After what seemed like hours, one of us spoke. Obviously, it was Rarity.

"I'll do it" She spoke, her voice filling my ears. I breathed.
"R-really?!" I asked, hoping I didn't sound too excited, but I could tell that I did.
"Yes, as long as you provide the place for me to stay, and food of course" She mumbled. It was hard to tell she was once the element of generosity.
"Sure, it's understandable you can't fully trust me yet" I stuttered. I must confess, I actually hate the idea of people not liking me.

She nodded at me slowly, and began to rise up from her chair. I followed suite.
"Well, nice talking to you, when can I move in?" She asked
"Tomorrow?" I replied. I knew this was the answer she wanted.

She nodded again, and walked out of the office without another word. I wanted to follow her, I don't know why, I just....did.
However, I wouldn't let me give in to my wants, and sat down at my chair, and began my daily routine.
